What are the 6 parts to a conversation?

1. Greeting: A greeting is how you introduce yourself to a person. When you first meet someone to begin a conversation or to be polite you say: Hello, Hi, How are you?

2. Small Talk: Small talk allows you to get to know a person. You ask specific questions to learn more about who you are speaking with: What is your name? Where are you from? What do you do?

3. Topic: A topic is the focus of WHAT you want to talk about. A topic should be things you enjoy, choosing a topic you enjoy will make talking about it easier: Sports, Travel, Movies 4. Main Conversation w/ Follow-up- Questions, Comments, Response: The main conversation is when you talk about your topic with your partner or partners. You ask questions and give answers, and your partner does the same: Follow-Up Question: A follow-up question follows a main question to get more information Ex: Who is your favorite actress? (Main Question) Answer: My favorite actress is Regina King Follow-up Question: Why is she your favorite actress?

Follow-up Statement: A follow-up statement shows your partner that you are interested in and understand what they said. It also allows you to connect more with your partner, allowing the conversation to be more interesting Ex: Who is your favorite actress? (Main Question) Answer: My favorite actress is Regina King Follow-up Question: Why is she your favorite actress?

Answer: She is my favorite actress because she is talented and beautiful.

Follow-up Statement: I like her too!

Follow-up Reaction: A follow-up reaction adds emotion to your question, answer, or comment

Ex: Who is your favorite actress? (Main Question) Answer: My favorite actress is Regina King Follow-up Question: Why is she your favorite actress?

Answer: She is my favorite actress because she is talented and beautiful.

Follow-up Statement: I like her too!

Answer: Oh really! (Follow-up reaction) 5. Reason: A reason is a polite way to end the conversation. Instead of just rudely walking away, you explain why the conversation needs to end: Ex: I'm sorry I have an appointment.

I've enjoyed talking to you, but I must go.

Sorry, but I must leave I need to get home.

6. Goodbye: A goodbye is a polite way to fully end your conversation: Ex: Goodbye, Bye, See ya!
