1 Complete the crossword using the clues. I asked my classmates about the sports in the student’s book. Most of them 1 jogging, usually in the summer. It’s free, teenagers love that! Some also 2 athletics, there is an after-school club here. In winter, about a third of them 3 ice-hockey, it’s common here in Kazakhstan. A few know how to 4 parkour, those are people who are also good at 5 gymnastics! And of course, everyone has 6 horse riding at least once, there are so many horses here. Not many classmates 7 roller skating, just me and my friends Zamira and Ivan! The skates are quite expensive. Lastly, because we don’t live near a river or a sea, nobody 8 windsurfing, but we would all like to try it!

We did a survey to find out what e-sports people play, and why they play them. The answers were very interesting.
We asked 20 young gamers. Ten of the young gamers often play football online. Almost all of it’s because the games are fun and competitive. One person is learning more tips and tricks to help them play football in real life. More than a quarter of the gamers only play Fortnite. The reasons are: for entertainment, and chatting with friends online.

I’ve just finished the novel Klara and the Sun, by Kazuo Ishiguro. It’s a 1 bossy / clever novel about a future where many people have an ‘Artificial Friend’ (AF). It sounds like a very 2 serious / patient topic for a novel, but it isn’t like that. It’s a story of friendship. Klara the AF is very 3 generous / honest, giving all her time to Josie, a young girl who is ill. But there are also times when the book is 4 funny / nervous – Klara has a good sense of humour! Like you imagine a robot to be, she is 5 bossy / shy and not scared to tell people exactly what to do. This happens when she is protecting her human friend Josie, but she never means to be 6 rude / confident. I think everyone would love to know a Klara.

We saw a documentary film in our biology class last week, called My Octopus Teacher. It was really good! It’s about a man who goes diving every day to visit the same octopus in the ocean. 1 and also the cameraman in the film.
Because he visits everyday, the man gets to know the octopus well and he watches it do all kinds of things like hunting for food and playing with other sea creatures. The octopus is clever and can change its shape and colour to hide from things ! that could kill it. 2 I won’t tell you what happens! Sometimes you don’t know what’s going to happen next, like a thriller. Some of my classmates cried a little! The man was really nice to the octopus, and by the end, they become friends. It was really interesting to see how this happened, I didn’t expect it. The man said the octopus taught him to be more patient and to appreciate the beauty of nature. 3
The film was well made and has beautiful film of the ocean and the creatures that live in it. All this was done with just two cameras: the biologist’s camera and sometimes one extra cameraman. 4 I think it’s because they worked hard making a film that is really different to other films with lots of characters and locations. Most of this film is just the man and the octopus under water, but it’s not boring at all.
I loved My Octopus Teacher because it showed how amazing and smart animals are. That was the thing our teacher wanted us to learn about, but the film also taught me much more. 5 We need to think more about how we affect everything that lives in it. We need to protect our planet more. Overall, I loved My Octopus Teacher and I think everyone should watch it, either in biology class or at home with friends.
B The scene with the shark was really exciting.

I live in Warsaw, so I have many transport options. I mostly get around by car, especially during the week when my parents give me a lift to school. It’s convenient. In my opinion that’s really common for teenagers here. Weekends are different. I sometimes cycle to meet friends, but there aren’t many cycle lanes, so at really busy times I get on the metro.
Personally, I think that teenagers now think about costs more than being environmentally friendly. That’s the reason I use my bike. However, I think it’s changing a bit. I’d like to use more public transport, and use a car less. Let’s make the future greener!

or y MY PROJECT: Holidays – a hist
By Claudio Ferreira
ge

br
I did a project about holidays and found out that even in ancient Rome people took time off from work. They often visited ancient Greek monuments and theatres in new cities, and went to the beach in summer. They had maps and guidebooks , just like we do today. My classmates and I hadn’t imagined that holidays were such an old concept.
Co
After the fall of the Roman Empire, this stopped happening. Battles around Europe meant most people didn’t leave their village. The only Europeans travelling far were soldiers, religious leaders or people who sold spices, and cloth arriving from Asia. The idea of holidays became popular again in the 19th century. If you were in England you would see familiar scenes of people at the
In fact, these ‘holidays’ were only day trips by train or horse and cart for most people. Until the 20th century ordinary workers couldn’t pay to stay overnight somewhere. However, in 1938 a new law gave workers in England one week of paid holidays every year. The idea of the modern holiday was born. Today, holidays are an important part of most people’s lives in my country, we all expect to have them. If we were living one hundred years ago, that might not be true! Be thankful to the people who made them possible. 4 What is the writer trying to do in the text? A convince us that holidays nowadays are
better than in the past B make us interested in the Roman way of life C help us understand that we are lucky to have holidays D persuade us that we need holidays 5 What might the writer say about modern holidays? A A modern holiday is one that everyone can afford – at a beach with clean water, close to home, with family. B Holidays nowadays are not a luxury, they’re something everyone must have in their lives. C People think holidays have always been a regular part of life, but we should be grateful for them. D Our holidays are not as long as the Romans’ holidays, but we can go to much better places.

The author learned that… A holidays in Rome were the same as he expected B few in his class knew that Romans had holidays C Romans and Greeks had similar holidays to us D holidays have always existed 2 Who went on holiday in ancient Rome? A only people with hotels B only people who worked long hours C only people with a lot of money D only soldiers and religious leaders 3 How were 19th century holidays similar to holidays now? A Going to the coast was popular. B People didn’t go swimming. C Everyone went on holidays close to home. D Holidays were usually just one day. 1
beach making sandcastles , eating ice-cream and sailing. But, back then not many people went into the water. The water was dirty, people couldn’t swim, and they needed long clothes to avoid sunburn. And of course, there were no planes, so they didn’t go abroad like us.

U
However, holidays in ancient Rome weren’t a part of life for everybody. Most of the population worked long hours to make enough money to live. Only rich Romans had free time. And, as hotels or B&Bs didn’t exist, you needed to have a second home. Also, they went for much longer than our typical holidays, up to two years at a time. The word ‘holiday’ had a very different meaning for them than it does for us.

We are writing to suggest an idea for the old outdoor swimming pool on Main Street. We are a group of young people living in the area, and we think this is an excellent place for a skatepark. We think that the town needs more places for young people to go after school because the cinemas are only open on Thursdays and at weekends. When there are more sports facilities in a city, it often has less crime. It would also be very good for our mental and physical health and it would not cost a lot of money to build. We hope you can consider our idea. Yours faithfully, The Rosewell Youth Club.

A SUMMARY
This is an article about the history of chocolate. The first part of the article tells us that chocolate has existed for 3,000 years, and is made from cacao plants. The article says that the Mayans and the Aztecs drank something called xocolatl that was sweet. They drank it before going to war and the Aztecs used it as money. The next half of the article talks about modern chocolate. In 1528, chef Hernán Cortés brought cacao to Spain and it became sweeter. Chocolate was popular with rich people in France and the UK. The chocolate press was invented in 1828 and this made chocolate very expensive. The article finishes by saying that chocolate is still popular and continues to change.

A history of
chocolate Chocolate has a long history that started in ancient Mesoamerica, which is now Mexico, about 4,000 years ago. We think these were the first people to turn cacao plants into chocolate. They used it as medicine. Later, the Mayans drank a mix of cacao beans, spicy chillies, water, and corn, which made a thick drink called ‘xocolatl’. It wasn’t sweet, like chocolate today.
We also know that in the 15th century, the Aztecs drank something similar. They also drank it to get strong and prepare for war. They used cocoa beans as currency, it was very important to them.

The next change was in 1828, with the invention of the chocolate press. This machine could separate cocoa butter and cacao powder, mix it with liquids and make it into a bar of chocolate. Because it was faster to make, chocolate became cheaper and normal people could buy it.

Then, in 1528, the explorer Hernán Cortés brought cacao to Spain and chocolate started to become more like we know it today. He mixed this with sugar and honey to make it sweeter. Learning has existed for thousands of years, but schools like today are not so old. In the United States, the first public school opened in Massachusetts in 1837. Then, in the 1900s laws were passed in many areas saying that all children under the age of 14 must get an education. Before that, many children had worked on farms, and in all the new factories that had opened.

However, things got worse in the 1940s. World War II had started and there wasn’t enough food to give every student a good lunch. But in 1946, the US government made a law to say that students across the country must get healthy lunches. This helped a lot of children in the USA then and now.
Today, schools should serve students tasty, healthy meals, but surveys tell us that this doesn’t always happen, or students don’t always choose the best options. Maybe we need to think more about why school lunches first started. If better lunches means better grades, this seems like an easy and cheap way to help children get a good education. Let’s eat better and learn better.

Schools needed children to be there all day so that parents could work, but teachers noticed that students got better grades when they ate a good lunch. Some students brought a packed lunch of sandwiches, but no schools had kitchens or places to eat in until schools in Boston served the first hot school lunches. School kitchens suddenly became popular all across the USA and then all over the world.

SOLAR POWERED CHARGER
Co
This solar powered charger is for sale because I need to make money for my world windsurfing trip. Also, it’s too heavy for me to take in my luggage. It’s about 8 kg and 30 cm x 60 cm. If you often go camping, you’ll use it a lot. Put this in the sun for 8 hours and you can power a laptop, a mobile and a small fan for one night. It’s also perfect for anyone who cares about being eco-friendly. It has been used a lot but works well. Pick it up at the youth club on Tuesday. Price: €40 or swap for a good 60l backpack.

They were incredibly helpful all week.
Each day was filled with classes where drama teachers focused on different things, from performing in shows to directing video clips. These were OK, but I had already learned the basics online. The camp leaders were what made the camp great. They were all quite young, with experience in acting, and they were a lot of fun. They gave me confidence in my
Looking back on that drama summer camp experience, I see that it wasn’t the easiest summer, it was hard work, expensive, and emotional at times, but it gave me the skills I needed to start acting on social media. Also, now I feel much more confident about making friends, and that’s really valuable. I really do recommend it!
Why was Ramon nervous at the start of the camp? A It was the first time he had met people from other places. B He couldn’t keep in touch with his family. C He thought he was only good at making friends online. D He had to get to know lots of people. 2 Ramon thinks one of the best things about the camp was A focusing on one area of drama that he liked. B the support that the camp counsellors gave him. C the creative ideas that the teachers provided. D the online video clips to help him learn. 3 How did Ramon feel about the final performance? A It was very stressful to create. B It needed a lot more work. C He was excited to be part of it. D The start of it was fantastic.
4 The summer camp experience gave Ramon A a relaxing and creative summer. B ideas that he could use online. C money to spend on acting classes. D confidence in meeting new people.

On the first night I was anxious and missed my family, so I wasn’t sure I wanted to stay. However, after two nights, everything was fine. The other teenagers were all huge fans of the theatre, just like me. Before that, I hadn’t really met anyone in real life who wanted to be an actor, only online. That’s what made the drama summer camp experience more than just learning about acting. It was also about building a community. I made friends with other campers from all over the country, and we still stay in touch now.

Evenings were filled with rehearsals. We organised a full play that we performed for everyone on the final day. The planning was quite stressful, and a lot of work, but we thought about the end point to motivate ourselves. It was incredible to see how much we had done, and experiencing the energy on opening night was amazing!

About half of the class said no. She wants to know why they are said that, and they said they thought celebrities need some privacy too. But people said that personal questions were fine because doing interviews was part of the job of an actor. We were asked to there were any questions that were not OK to ask. We decided that topics about relationships, family and health were not OK. I asked myself if I have ever clicked on an article about an actor and the problems in their life. I had. I’m playing in a handball 1 team / workout at the local sports centre this year – it’s great! My new teammates are really friendly. We 2 enter / train twice a week. The 3 fitness / training sessions are fun. Our coach made us run a lot at first, to work on our 4 kit / fitness after the summer holidays. Now we do lots of different exercises, and we play handball, of course. It’s a great 5 workout / tracksuit, and the time goes fast. The 6 changing rooms / training sessions have big 7 fitness / lockers to put our stuff in when we put on our 8 team / kit, and after we finish training there are hot showers. We don’t play in a league at the moment, but sometimes we 9 enter / train a handball tournament at the weekend. Then we all wear the team 10 changing room / tracksuit and meet at the sports centre to travel together.

There was a terrible crossroads in the town centre yesterday after a bus stopped in the middle of the road by the cinema. None of the cars could go anywhere. I waited more than half an hour at the underground because every bus that went past was full of traffic lights and the driver didn’t let anyone get on. The pedestrian crossing from my village to school is really bad. Often the buses don’t come. Sometimes I think it would be quicker to walk! At primary school we had lessons about how to cross over the bus stop. Press the button and wait for the little green man! My mum gets nervous when she’s travelling in the traffic jam. She says the trains go too fast in the tunnels. That passengers is quite dangerous because sometimes drivers go through the bus service when they are on red.

He says you don’t need a 7 credit card / receipt, because you can see what you paid on your phone, but I don’t agree. If what you buy is 8 damaged / tried on, you need to show the receipt when you take it back to the shop. Still, I’ve got a phone app now too, and it’s very useful. Yesterday I 9 hired / damaged an electric bike with it. They didn’t take cash either!

We booked to stay on a hostel in the old town. Our plane arrived late. Outside the airport there was a big queue in the bus to go into the town, but we waited because it was too expensive to get a taxi. In the town centre we asked at directions. We couldn’t understand the directions and we got lost. I knew we wouldn’t arrive at time at the hostel, so I decided to check for online!
