BECOMING A WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHER 16-year-old Zahra Malik talks about her experience

I live in a megacity, but unlike my friends, I don’t like skateboarding or other sports. I’ve always been into animals and nature. I can spend hours watching small creatures like bees, spiders and even mosquitoes. I’ve discovered amazing things about them, but until two years ago, I didn’t know how to pass this knowledge on. Then I got an idea. My mum had an old camera that she wasn’t using, and I began to take photos.

I soon realised being a good wildlife photographer involves certain basic things. I’ve learned to wait for the animal to appear and then give it enough space to behave naturally. I definitely don’t try to persuade it to do anything with food. If an animal seems nervous or scared, I walk away. I definitely avoid scaring it more by shining a bright light. And finally, we all need to look after the environment. We shouldn’t break branches to get closer, but rather go around them instead.

After the photo appeared, everyone, even my teachers, congratulated me. Entering a competition and winning not only helped me feel more confident, but it was a great way to show other people my work. I searched the internet and found that TV channels, magazines and even phone companies run contests for young people. I’ve now won several prizes, but my dream is to send an image to the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

I took hundreds of photos, and my family and friends began to admire them. Our local newspaper organises a photography competition where readers are invited to upload their photos. The best ones are published. I decided to enter, and that was my first competition. I’d managed to take a photo of a bat in flight with the sunset behind. I knew it was a good picture, but I didn’t expect to see it in the paper.

So, what next? I’d love to become a professional wildlife photographer, but there’s loads I still need to learn about cameras, equipment and light. There are university degrees in photography, but I think I may do digital art as I’d also learn about other creative skills. My uncle has suggested working as a photographer’s assistant during the holidays. That could be cool, so I’ve just started contacting studios. And if, in the end, I decide to do something else, I think photography will always be my hobby.

Teenager Lukas writes about how he has prepared for his first holiday alone.

I’m taking my first holiday alone this summer, and I’ve made all the arrangements myself. I’ve made a reservation at a youth hostel in Tobermory on Mull, a small island off the Scottish coast, and I’ve booked the ferry. All I had to do was go online! Luckily, I don’t get sick on boats. I’m going just after my birthday because they don’t accept under 16s without an adult. I’m a little bit anxious even though I’ve spent months getting ready for this.

On my mum’s advice, I signed up for personal safety training, so I’ve learned how to avoid trouble, and, if absolutely necessary, how to defend myself. I’ve become more streetwise. I mean, I can see when things aren’t quite right, and I know not to trust everyone. When another traveller asks to borrow money because they’ve run out, even if they promise to give it back, it may be a scam*.

What else have I done to get ready for the trip? And what have I discovered? I’ve done day hikes and taken buses and trains on my own, and I’ve got terribly lost. However, I’ve learned to follow maps and ask others for directions. I’ve eaten out loads of times with family, but never alone

and it isn’t as simple as it looks. You have to learn to manage your own company, look carefully at the prices on the menu, and also know about tips. And most importantly, just because there’s only one of you, it doesn’t mean you have to sit in the worst place, next to the toilet! I was recently having a great holiday with my dad when he suggested I spend a morning alone to see how I would manage. I wanted to visit the castle, so I used an app on my phone to find the best route. I designed my own perfect trip, apart from the delay on the way home, but I was able to let my dad know.

What do you want to be when you grow up? How many times have you been asked that question? It was easier to answer when I was a child. Unlike my friends who wanted to be pilots, I wanted to be a firefighter. But now as a teenager, I think differently. I avoid answering this question because I’m embarrassed to admit I’ve no idea. But does this matter? Recent research has found that if you have a big dream but you’re unable to achieve it, you may end up disappointed.
