A LAIKA

Laika was a street dog from Moscow, Russia. She was famous because she was the first animal to travel around the Earth, in 1957. You can learn about Laika online, and there’s also a comic book about when she went to space. And who was the first human to travel into space? That was Yuri Gagarin in 1961.

C MOLLY WILLIAMS

When Aristide Boucicaut started working at Le Bon Marché in Paris, he wanted to change it. It was only small. He wanted to create a big shop which was very different from other shops – and that’s what he did. In his large new shop there was a place for the shop assistants to have lunch, there were classes for them after work, and they started to take holidays.

Molly Williams was the first woman to work as a firefighter in the US. She started in the fire station by making meals and cleaning. However, winter was bad in 1818 and many people were ill. One day, Molly Williams was the only person at work when a fire started. There weren’t any cars or lorries at that time, so Molly needed to carry the water. She stopped the fire!

Only 8% of land in Northern Ireland is forest – that isn’t much at all! Trees are important for so many different reasons, and that’s why my parents and I are volunteers at Tree Nursery. The weather was dry last weekend so we got up early and cycled out of the city to get there. We helped to plant some more young trees.

Large cities are fun but difficult to live in. We watched a video at school about the number of homeless people in our city. We wanted to do something to help. Then we saw an article about Our Big Kitchen in Sydney. They prepare free meals for people who need them. Last year they made 120,000 meals! I want to tell you about our last school trip to the national park. We met at school very early in the morning and we went by bus. We all felt really excited, but tired. We drove through beautiful countryside. After two hours, we arrived at an amazing forest. We started walking to the river but then I thought, ‘Where’s Rebecca? She isn’t here!’ We went back to the bus. Rebecca was on the bus, and she was asleep!

Best wishes,

THE WORLD according to Harry Tao Blog

Do we really need animals?

They’re great friends. My uncle’s got a special farm. He doesn’t buy and sell animals. People go there to brush the horses and give them food. After that, people don’t feel sad. My uncle’s cat and rabbits are also special. He takes them to the hospital, but they aren’t ill. Everyone loves meeting them! They’re fun. My grandma lives with her dog, Suzy. Every day they go for a long walk. Suzy loves playing games. My grandma throws a ball and Suzy catches it. One day, Suzy found a cap and she came back with it. This is good exercise for my grandma, and she feels great because she’s never ill.

4

3 What information does Harry give about

people and horses? A People travelled to the countryside because they loved riding horses. B People lived together in small groups because they had a horse. C People could go to different places because they had horses.

4 What does Harry say about how we’re

safe with animals? A Some animals help us walk quickly. B Some animals find help for us. C Some animals help us swim well.

5 Why does Harry think all animals are

important? A We need them for food. B Every animal does something special. C When they’re older, they can help us.

t

The world needs them all! I know snails eat plants in our gardens, but they clean the gardens too. And many people are afraid of jellyfish but they’re important for the sea and they also keep baby fish safe.

2 How does Suzy help Harry’s grandma? A She keeps her well. B She finds new things. C She teaches her sports.

en

We’re safe with them. When I’m not feeling well, my dog knows, and she tells my mum. And other animals? There are stories about dolphins who help people in the sea. And in India, an elephant stood in front of a small child in the street so that other elephants didn’t walk on her.

Why do some people visit Harry’s uncle’s farm? A Because they want an animal. B Because they love riding horses. C Because they feel happy there.

m

They do difficult work. Humans started living with horses about 5,000 years ago. This was important. People could travel fast, and families could move to new places because they had transport. Horses could also carry large things and help people with work on the farm.
