Can you ride a bike? Do you like ice skating or doing gymnastics? When you do these activities, what helps you not to fall all the time? It’s your sense of balance. Your brain controls your sense of balance. The brain is a very complicated organ. Different parts control different things. cerebellum The cerebellum is the part of the brain that controls balance. Without this, it would be difficult to walk or even stand up.

Can you imagine being in a circus? Travelling all over the world, playing with clowns, flying through the air on a trapeze, or jumping on trampolines all day? No? Well, let’s ask Yasmin, from Captain Adventure’s Travelling Circu s. She knows all about it!

Interviewer: Hello, Yasmin. When did you start at the circus? Yasmin: I was born in the circus. My parents are acrobats from Morocco. They work with Captain Adventure’s Travelling Circus. My dream was to perform with them. I wanted to perform even before I could walk!
Interviewer: Did you practise every day? Yasmin: Yes, I did. In the mornings, I had classes online. They started at nine o’clock. In the afternoons I practised acrobatics with my dad for hours. We practised until dinner at half past seven. He helped me improve and learn new moves. ‘Let’s try a backflip,’ he said one day. I couldn’t do backflips when I was five, but I can now.

Plants are living things and grow almost everywhere – from the bottom of the sea to the highest mountain. What plants grow near you? Most plants make food using sunlight. They also need water to survive, just like us! Plants usually have three parts to them: roots, a stem and leaves. The roots take up water from the ground and the leaves take in sunlight and air around them for food. Some plants also have flowers or fruit.

Carnivorous plants
m
Like most other plants, carnivorous plants need sun, air and water to make their own food. But they also get extra nutrients by eating small animals! Here are two examples:
The Sundew plant
Venus flytraps grow naturally in the USA but are used as house plants all over the world. They use their leaves to catch insects, like flies. The leaves close when an insect touches the tiny hairs that grow on them. The plant can then slowly eat the insect.
Sundew plants are found in the Indian rainforests. They can grow in soil that is underwater. Their leaves have sticky hairs and when an insect lands on the leaves, the sticky hairs trap them. Large sundew plants can trap and eat spiders.

Long ago, the King of Ayodhya chose his son Rama to be the next king. But the Queen of Ayodhya wanted their other son, Bharat, to be the next king. ‘Rama mustn’t be king!’ she said. The Queen wanted to trick Rama so that he couldn’t be the next king. ‘You must go quickly and live in the jungle,’ she told Rama. The jungle was far from Ayodhya.

Rama went to live in the jungle with his wife, Sita, and his younger brother, Lakshman. One day, Sita saw a golden deer quietly eating plants near their home. Sita asked Rama and Lakshman to go and catch the golden deer. But when they came back home, Sita wasn’t there.
Co
Rama and Lakshman looked carefully, but they couldn’t find Sita. Rama asked Hanuman for help. Hanuman was the leader of the Monkeys. He could fly higher than any animal in the jungle. ‘Don’t worry. I’ll find her,’ Hanuman told Rama. As Hanuman flew quickly through the sky, he saw some of Sita’s jewellery below. Then he saw more and more. He followed the jewellery to the palace of the bad King Ravana. Hanuman found Sita crying quietly in the palace garden.

Daedalus was an inventor who lived on the island of Crete. One day, King Minos asked him to build a labyrinth for the Minotaur, which had the head of a bull and the body of a man. When Daedalus completed the labyrinth, a big maze, the King put the Minotaur inside. Daedalus was the inventor of the labyrinth and the only person who knew its secret. King Minos didn’t like that; he wanted all the power. So the King locked Daedalus and Daedalus’s son, Icarus, in a tower. ‘Now you can’t tell anyone the secret of the labyrinth,’ the King said. Daedalus and Icarus felt sad. Days passed, then Daedalus had an idea. He collected feathers from the birds that flew to the window of the tower. Then he made wings with the feathers. He used wax from a candle to stick the feathers together.
ss se
Daedalus told Icarus, ‘Follow me. And remember this: your wings are made of wax and feathers. Don’t go too high because the sun will melt the wax. Don’t go too low because the sea will make the feathers in your wings wet and heavy.’ Daedalus and Icarus jumped out of the window. Wow, Icarus loved flying!

In geography, we learn about maps. We need maps to find places and show distances between places.
Co
There are different types of maps, including: 1 political maps, which show borders between countries or between areas inside a country; 2 street maps, which show the different roads in an area; 3 physical maps, which show natural features in an area, like rivers, mountains and lakes.

Sara, Taji and Paul were in the library talking about their project. Mr Carlton, their teacher, said they could choose any topic about the country of Türkiye for their project. Sara had an idea. ‘Our project can be about Turkish literature. I’m sure that Türkiye has lots of interesting stories and myths.’ ‘Great idea! Let’s do research on the Internet,’ said Taji. ‘Aha! There is a myth about a mouse and a camel,’ said Paul. ‘I know! Why don’t we do something original, like rewrite the story as a song?’ said Sara. ‘I’m good at writing poems. Taji’s good at music and can help us make the poem into a song and you’re good at singing, Paul. You can present our project to the class by singing!’ ‘Perfect!’ said Taji. So that’s what they did! We went to the theatre last night to watch the play The Jungle Book. The stage was so beautiful. There was a big jungle with a dark blue sky. There was a gold star and a bright moon in the sky. My dad is an archaeologist. Last year, he visited Spain. There is lots of work for an archaeologist in Spain because it’s got many examples of how people lived in the past. Its history is very old! My dad went to the Altamira Caves. The caves are famous because archaeologists discovered the first cave paintings there in 1895. My dad says that in the past, people told stories using art. They didn’t write like we do. The paintings are over 14,000 years old. Many of the paintings on the cave walls show animals and people hunting. In one cave, a really big painting showed a bison (a type of animal). We think the paintings tell the story of how people hunted. There were no paints or paintbrushes then so the cave people used the things they found around them.

He read so much that sometimes he forgot to eat or sleep. He dreamed about saving people in danger and fighting dragons. One day, he decided to become a knight and he changed his name to Don Quixote. Last year we went on a trip in the car. Mom said, ‘We aren’t going to go far.’ We wanted to visit a small town called Hope, Where Grandma was born, she’s called Sue-Ella Cope.
But the road was so long and it went on and on, Over bridge after bridge, until Dad said, ‘We’re wrong.’ Dad shouted, ‘We should go west.’ But Mom said, ‘No, east is best.’ Our sister, Yvonne, is small but so kind, She’s quite good at finding directions online. ‘Go left at the shops,’ she said, and we were in town!

‘Long ago, there was a beautiful princess called Iztaccihuatl, and a young warrior, Popocatepetl. They were in love, but before they could get married, a dangerous tribe attacked their village. The leader of Popocatepetl’s village said to him: ‘We need you. You must fight to help our village.’ Popocatepetl had to say goodbye and Iztaccihuatl was lonely and sad. One day she heard that Popocatepetl was dead. She became very ill. In the end, she died of a broken heart. But Popocatepetl wasn’t dead. When he returned, he discovered that Iztaccihuatl was dead.
