Since 2000, he has been teaching in Japan and was until recently head of English Communication programs at a large Junior Senior high school in Hiroshima. He is currently a lecturer in English communication at Fukuyama City University. He holds a BEd Hons and a Cambridge R.S.A Dip TEFLA. Michael Bastings first came to Japan in 1990. He has taught English in Tokyo, Kochi, and Hiroshima Prefectures, and currently teaches in the Communicative English Department at Josuikan Junior and Senior High School in Mihara, Hiroshima. He spent a year at International Christian University, Tokyo, before receiving a B.A. in World Literature and Cultural Studies, with a focus on Japanese Language and Literature, from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Introduction Welcome to Why Can’t Elephants Jump?

Whether you be an experienced teacher or new to the dynamic and challenging world of English language teaching, you will find this book an invaluable addition to your resource bank. Based on many years of practical teaching experience in the Japanese education system from junior high school upwards, this collection of 33 thoroughly tried-and-tested lessons with language practice activities will really help your students to develop their practical English skills.

About this book This is a resource book of language practice activities designed to supplement and support existing coursework. The activities are presented within the framework of supportive step-by-step lesson plans created to help you to get the most out of the materials.

The lesson map at the beginning of this book provides an “at a glance” list of the 33 lessons contained in this book.

The lesson plans include notes on activity level and type, the topic, the language focus, the grammatical structures used, and the vocabulary covered. The lesson aims are clearly stated, and the materials and set up section provides all you need to know to get started. Following on from the procedure notes are suggested variations, additions, and follow-ups to many of the ideas.

The topics and activities have been carefully chosen to address the needs and interests of Japanese learners of English.

Each lesson is designed to last about 50 minutes unless otherwise stated.

The materials section contains all the photocopiable materials for each lesson. The materials are clearly numbered and headed to correspond with the lesson plans for easy access.

The language support sections at the back of the book provide translations of selected language in English, romaji, and Japanese. These have been designed as an aid to the teacher. Again, each section is clearly numbered and headed to correspond with the lesson plans and materials for easy access.

A note on materials management Preparing materials requires an investment of teachers’ time in copying and cutting up. In the case of worksheets which students are asked to write on, these materials can be treated as disposable. In activities where sets of playing cards are needed, we recommend such materials be copied onto card and treated as reusable resources to be retained for future use thus saving on preparation time and trees!

We hope you have a memorable time!

We have deliberately avoided using the word game in this book as the connotations of the word are often construed negatively within a teaching context. Many school teachers feel they don’t have the time to “play games.” Games (or activities as we choose to call them) are viewed as a luxury to be enjoyed in ones free time, and consequently have no place in a time-strapped serious study program.

We would beg to differ on this point.

It is widely-accepted that practical application of an idea facilitates learning and aids its memorization.

Practice aids production. Production aids memory.

Japanese English language tests are primarily tests of memory.

It is our contention, therefore, that creating memorable moments through the use of practical language activities can only be beneficial to the students when needing to remember come test time!

All the language activities in this book have been carefully designed with serious language learning issues at heart. Enjoyment in what one is doing is a great motivator and always an added bonus when it comes to work and, as such, we make no apologies for the fact that your students may indeed enjoy using these language practice activities. We might even go as far as to say they— and you—will find them fun!

How to use this book The lesson plans all follow the format as set out below.

Each page begins with a brief introduction to the lesson topic and study focus.

The activity explained: Where necessary, this section is provided to describe the rules and purpose of the main activity. We have placed this section where it is most appropriate within the flow of the lesson.

Level: The level for each lesson corresponds to JHS textbooks, JH1 = Junior High 1st year.

The lessons have been used equally effectively with students ranging in ages from 11 to adult. We therefore recommend and hope that teachers using this book will employ these lessons and activities at any time additional practice and language review is desired.

Some lessons are supplied with several levels of activity materials, e.g. JH2-3.

The âœą asterisk next to a particular lesson name indicates that the accompanying activity can be easily adapted to present different content level and/or topic. Suggestions for alternative uses are listed in the Variations, Additions, and /or Followup sections below.

Procedure: Here, the order of the lesson is clearly set out. Where a lesson comprises a series of different activities, these have been numbered and headed for easy reference.

Variations: This section offers alternative ways of conducting a particular activity or alternative language areas that could be introduced and practiced using the same activity format.

Additions: Includes ideas for warmers and suggestions for increasing the challenge.

Follow-ups: Outlines opportunities for reviewing or extending the language and developing the topic idea.

Activity type(s): This includes i) the recommended arrangement of students such as pairs, groups, whole class, or team, and ii) the type of activity, be it card-based, worksheet-based etc.

Topic: This states the general language area being addressed.

Language focus: Defines more specifically the language area to be practiced.

Structures: Lists clearly the grammatical structures used in the activity.

Vocabulary: Some activities focus on clearly defined lexical sets and, in such cases, the essential vocabulary is listed here. Occasionally, the vocabulary set is too large to make a full list practical. In this case, typical examples are given, followed by directions to the materials themselves for a complete list. Finally, there are activities where much of the vocabulary used will be dictated by the students themselves. In these cases, this section will state that the vocabulary is free range.

The main aim(s) of each activity are clearly set out here.

Materials and set-up: This section provides a list of materials to be prepared in advance, suggestions for classroom organization, and pre-class board set-up.

Many of the pair work activities can be conducted using your traditional classroom set-up. Smallgroup board / card based activities can be easily accommodated by moving desks together.

1. Scrambled Introductions The importance of being able to introduce yourself confidently should not be underestimated. As the saying goes, “You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression!”

In this lesson, students are helped to create a new and hopefully amusing identity for themselves with which to review and practice the language of introductions.

This activity is particularly suitable for classes of students of the same age and who come from the same locality as it breaks up the monotony of repetitive answers.

Level: JH1 Activity type: whole class—mingle & information exchange Topic: introducing a “new” you!

Language focus: asking and answering questions about personal information Structures: Hello, my name is _. / What’s your name? / Wow, nice to meet you. / I’m from _. Procedure: Part 1. Vocabulary: Completing the board set-up 1. Elicit a variety of examples for each category, one section at a time, starting with famous people.

2. Encourage students not to choose Japan as a country or cat or dog as an animal. This will help create more amusing profiles in part 3.

Part 2. The worksheet: Creating the “new” you!

1. Give out the Scrambled Introductions worksheet.

2. Read it together.

3. Ask students to complete the worksheet using the information on the board.

4. Look at the response language and practice it together.

Part 3. The mingle: Introducing the “new” you and meeting the “new” thems!

1. Label half the students in the class A and the other half B. 2. The As will begin the conversation.

3. Demonstrate the activity with a student. Teacher takes A’s role and starts by introducing his new self. Ask the student the four questions and use the response expressions in reply.

4. If necessary, choose another student, this time teacher playing B’s role.

5. Students mingle, As introducing their new selves and meeting as many new Bs as possible!

6. After some time, stop the activity and allocate Bs to start.

7. Restart the activity.

2. Know-It-All There is nothing like success for developing confidence, enthusiasm, and of course continued success. Many “beginner level” students of English bring with them a considerable knowledge bank of English vocabulary to the classroom. Tapping into this resource by presenting vocabulary, much of which will be familiar to them, provides a great opportunity to get students off to a positive and successful start to their English studies.

Level: JH1 Activity types: whole class—flashcards / team— drawing activity Topic: simple nouns Language focus: question forms and answers / the use of a or an before nouns Structures: What is it? / It’s a(n) + noun. / Is it a(n) + noun? / Yes it is. / No it isn’t.

Vocabulary: 26 simple nouns from “a” apple to “z” zip The main aims are: 1. to highlight to the students that they already “know” lots of English.

2. to extend this knowledge base by introducing some new vocabulary.

3. to highlight and practice use of the articles a / an.

4. to practice simple question and answer structures.

Materials and set-up: •• 1 set of 26 alphabet / picture cards (Use the cards provided by your school coursebook if available.)

•• A set of photocopiable cards is also provided in the materials section.

•• Separate cards into i) nouns beginning with consonants, ii) vowels, and iii) X-ray (Parts 1 & 2) •• On the board write: What is it? It’s a _.

2. Add X-ray. Point out that because the initial sound is “e,” as in pen, we say an X-ray.

Part 1c. All cards 1. Keeping the cards in two groups, hold up picture cards from either group at random.

Ask: What is it? Monitor responses for the correct use of a or an.

Part 1d. Is it a / an _?

1. Pick cards at random and ask: Is it a / an _?

Model the full answer: Yes it is.

2. As above with: No it isn’t.

3. Choose cards and questions to elicit mixed answers.

Part 2. Team drawing activity 1. Divide the class into two teams.

2. Divide the board in half.

3. One player from each team comes to the board, where the teacher shows them a picture card.

4. Each player must draw the object on their part of the board as quickly as possible while their teams try to be the first to call out the correct sentence answer. It’s a / an _.

5. The teacher plays judge and awards points accordingly.

Procedure: Part 1a. Nouns beginning with consonants (excluding X-ray) 1. Hold up the first consonant picture card beginning with b. Ask: What is it?

Model the full answer: It’s a ball.

Students listen and repeat.

2. As above with the other cards, occasionally back-tracking to previous cards.

Part 1b. Nouns beginning with vowels (including X-ray) 1. Hold up the first vowel picture card beginning with a. Ask: What is it?

Model the full answer: It’s an apple. Students listen and repeat.

Continue with vowel picture cards e, i, o, u.

3. Alpha-Better!

Starting with a review of the alphabet, this lesson helps students to distinguish between letters with similar “name” sounds. It concludes with an exciting team challenge and a spelling activity.

Level: JH1 Activity types: teams—speed reading race / pair work—spelling Topic: the alphabet Language focus: the names of the letters Aa–Zz Structures: How do you spell _?

Vocabulary: apple, box, ball, cat, dog, elephant, five, girl, jacket, key, pen, queen, seven, umbrella, window, zip The main aim is to practice the pronunciation of letter names as an aid to spelling.

Materials and set-up: •• Write A B C at the top of the board (Part 1.1).

Procedure: Part 1. Introducing the alphabet letter names / identifying similar sound groups.

1. Complete the upper case A–Z across the top of the board, everybody saying the letter names as you write them.

2. Repeat the above, this time writing the lower case letters a–z underneath.

3. On the board, point to the sound /ei/ (as in day). Say this sound. Students repeat. Then point to the word day. Say this word. Students repeat.

Then point to the letter Aa and its name sound / ei/. Say the letter name. Students repeat.

4. Write the letter a in the /ei/ column under (day).

5. Students listen as you read the other letter names and try to identify others with the sound /ei/ Write these in the /ei/ column. Listen and repeat.

6. Continue with the sounds /i:/ /e/ /ai/ /әu/ /u:/ and /a:/.

7. Divide the class into A/B pairs. Give out the worksheets and complete Part 1.

Part 2. Focus on problem pairs 1. Use the cards to practice these pairs of sounds; e/i b/d b/v b/p j/g m/n Part 3. Team speed reading race.

2. Divide the class into two teams. Team 1 lines up at the Aa end and team 2 the Zz end.

3. On the command Go, the first member of each team walks down the line of letters pointing to each one and reading it out loud.

4. When the two players meet across the same letter, they must play “Rock, Paper, Scissors.”

The winner continues down the line. The loser goes to the back of their team line and is replaced by the next team member as quickly as possible.

5. The winning team is the one that reaches the end of the line of letters first.

Part 4. Pairs spelling activity. (NB: If short of time this activity could be left to a later class.)

1. On the board write: How do you spell ___? Ask the class to spell dog / cat / pen.

2. Get the class to ask you the same questions.

3. Go through the pictures on Part 2 of the worksheet together. Listen and repeat.

4. Divide the class into A/B pairs. Students complete Part 2 of the worksheet.

Variations: •• Part 3 i) Teams change ends. ii) Shuffle the cards so they are NOT in order.
