York Traditions Bank, Eventive, and all of the organizers of the 2016 York Halloween Parade were thrilled a few months ago when one of York’s finest – and busiest – agreed to serve as Grand Marshal for this year’s parade – but no one was surprised. After all, Kevin Schreiber has stepped up to serve York time and time again. Currently state representative for the 95th Legislative District, Schreiber most recently agreed to serve the area as the next president and CEO of the York County Economic Alliance, one of very few opportunities the 36-yearold said could draw him away from serving as state representative. Schreiber became the latter in May of 2013 after serving the City of York for seven years as Community and Economic Development Director, a position through which he worked hand in hand with start-up businesses, innovative entrepreneurs, and business leaders to improve the local economy, York neighborhoods, and the tax base. “Having Kevin as our Grand Marshal couldn’t be more fitting,” said Michael E. Kochenour, Founder, Chairman of the Board, and CEO of York Traditions Bank, the parade sponsor. “After all, he’ll be leading the parade through parts of our city that he has directly

10

supported and helped over the years. We are grateful for his willingness to serve in this important role in the parade and, more important, for all he has done on behalf of the people of York and the surrounding communities.” Schreiber serves on the Pennsylvania House of Representative Local Government, Urban Affairs, Policy, Environmental Resources and Energy, and Children & Youth Committees, roles that have helped him advocate a number of legislative priorities – educational opportunities for all children in the commonwealth, public safety, government reform, equal rights, and the environment. His advocacy of those topics has found Schreiber working with people and organizations throughout the area, including Habitat for Humanity, the YWCA, the YMCA, Crispus Attucks Organization, and the York Housing Authority. He serves or has served on the boards of Downtown Inc., York County Convention and Visitors Bureau, Partnership for Economic Development in York County, and YorkArts. Schreiber and his wife, Jen, live in York with their cavalier spaniel, Lucy.

We take nothing for granted more than the stuff we love. We don’t even realize how much we love certain stuff until that stuff is in short supply – like the last drops of milk in the carton or the ketchup that sticks to the inside of the bottle on the last few squeezes. Let’s take a minute to pay homage to one of those items of stuff. An item of stuff that’s far more human and far more valuable than most stuff – the parade. Growing up locally, we remember Octobers in downtown York. Name a year…we’ll say 1986. We rode down Market Street on the old beast-style school buses. We perked up in our seats and smashed our noses against the window to see the Halloween murals that William Penn students painted on city storefronts.

12

We came downtown with our parents on the last Sunday of October to check out the sweetest new movie themes that the marching bands played – probably Back to the Future or something totally rad. We didn’t care what the weather was bringing, because there was no stopping this show. This was the YORK Halloween Parade. HOW…DID…THAT…HAPPEN? We had no idea. It just did. EVERY...YEAR. Here we are in 2016. The York Halloween Parade is a 67-year-old idea. The tradition started three years after World War II ended. We should assume parades were a hot act around that time since we had a lot to celebrate. Now there are at least 15 things to do on a Sunday afternoon, and that just covers the NFL games. Why would anybody in

their right mind come downtown to lay a blanket on a cold curb and watch the kids of York County crowd the streets as our community puts on a parade? Here are a few solid reasons: Parade floats, WINDOW ART, clowns, freaks, face painters, balloon artists, kids in costumes, adults (overgrown kids) in costumes, X-TREME LASER TAG, inflatables, street rods, choppers, MARCHING BANDS, scooters, wheelying bike kids, twirlers, dancers, massive work vehicles, horses, puppies, YWCA TEMPLE GUARD, candy slingshots, shop owners, dignitaries, PUPPIES…wait, I said that twice… Anyway, that stuff is all pretty cool. But why are we REALLY downtown on October 30? Why participate in this little project we call “community stuff”? Let’s ask the people who make it happen, the collaborative forces behind the good stuff going on in York County: - Ask York Traditions Bank why they get involved and they’ll tell us it’s to give non-profit organizations the chance to show off their stuff for FREE. - Ask CGA Law Firm and they’ll tell us it’s so all families can enjoy a few hours together playing laser tag for FREE. Ask Menchey Music and they’ll tell us it’s to give York a sense of pride in our young musicians. - Ask DCS School of Driving and they’ll tell us the smiles on the faces of the kids riding behind their rigs are worth the float prep time. - Ask York College and they’ll tell us it’s important to have an active student

body volunteering in the social good that’s going on around downtown York. - Ask Weary Arts Group and they’ll tell us resources to be creative should be available to everybody. - Ask Wire-Mesh Products and they’ll tell us they care about the safety of participants at the final staging area of the parade. - Ask York Fairgrounds and they’ll tell us their dedication to community goes well beyond 10 days in September. - Ask ComForCare Home Care and they’ll tell us their services are about spending time together and that’s why parades matter. - Ask Maple Donuts and they’ll tell us the district art programs working together to paint downtown windows pays infinitely beyond the resources donated to a month-long art project. - Ask LifePath Christian Ministries and they’ll tell us the time spent prepping the parade route gives them a bond with the York community where they will continue to build strong lives around their dedicated work. Ask any Yorker why they come to the York Halloween Parade. It’s about all the good stuff in this town. It’s about the feeling that we get when 30,000 others from every socioeconomic background in our microcosm join us for one event. Sometimes it’s uncomfortable stuff. Sometimes it’s fun stuff. Sometimes it’s all of the emotional stuff in the spectrum hitting us at once. Whatever it is, it’s human stuff. Welcome to the 67th York Halloween Parade presented by York Traditions Bank.

Welcome To One of York’s Greatest Traditions For 67 years, the York Halloween Parade has assembled ghastly ghouls, big brass bands, non-profits, businesses, and entries of all varieties for an annual procession through the streets of our city. The sights and sounds have changed over the years, but the driving force behind the display has never wavered: a strong sense of pride in our community. It was the critical factor in the start of that first parade, and it remains the heart and soul of the tradition today. We can relate. York Traditions signed on as the sponsor of this great tradition two parades ago because we, too, saw in it the affirmation of all that makes this area great. We saw in it the joy it brings to our neighbors, the focus it puts on their successes, and the sense of belonging it embodies for members of a rightfully proud community. We saw in it a York institution that we wanted to go on and on for future generations, because we live here too. That’s the beauty of a tradition, and this York tradition is a beauty. In 2014, we chose to support our friends at Eventive, the event planning and production division of the York Revolution, so they could put together a celebration of York without having to

worry each year about some of the financial constraints that can prevent such festive events. They have done that and more. They’ve shouldered the responsibility of organizing the route and entries, securing such truly great Grand Marshals as Kevin Schreiber, and earning the support of many other local businesses, whose support in turn has brought back traditional parade elements like the large numbers of marching bands and the fun of downtown Halloween window painting. Others have supported new elements like the Family Fun Zone. The result is the event that has brought us together again this last Sunday of October, an event that also owes its continued existence to one final, vital contributor – you. You and those joining you along the parade route are ultimately the people who power the parade by reminding those of us behind it that community matters and community supports things like this great York tradition. From all of us, then, thank you for the 67th Annual York Halloween Parade…and all those to come! Sincerely,

Mike Kochenour Founder, Chairman & CEO York Traditions Bank

Revs Seek Next Great Non-Profit Presenting Sponsor For the past 10 years the Revolution have been bringing family-friendly, affordable fun to York County while also striving to support the team’s community through partnerships with local non-profit organizations. For six of those seasons, some of those organizations– the YMCA of York County, the Boy Scouts, York County Library System, Penn Mar Human Services, the SPCA, and Special Olympics – have been presenting sponsors of the Revolution season and benefitted from presenting level marketing campaigns, season-long interactions with the fans at PeoplesBank Park, and multiple fundraising opportunities. With the 2016 season in the books, the search for the next great presenting sponsor is on. Entering its 10th season, the Revolution partnered with several non-profit groups for 2016, one of the most prominent of which was the York Rescue Mission. The Mission strives to meet the basic needs of men women and children living in poverty as well as to equip, train, nurture, and guide them toward a better quality of life. The Mission is dedicated to finding purpose for those who may not have felt a purpose before. Prior to the season, the men in the Mission programs spent many hours helping PeoplesBank Park staff members paint bathrooms and other areas of the stadium. During every Saturday night home game, they’ve worked alongside Revolution personnel to help pick up the debris left behind by inside-the-park fireworks shows. The Mission also sponsored a custom Revolution superhero jersey to raise awareness for the good things the Mission does in the York community and to raise money to support

22

those programs. The Rescue Mission then capped off their season of partnership by sponsoring a “Back to School” night, when the community was encouraged to donate school supplies to needy children in exchange for tickets to a Revs game. “The program was a huge success,” said Nate Tile, York Revolution vice president of business development. “Working with the men from the Rescue Mission was terrific. These were guys who have been down on their luck and who have experienced things in their lives that many of us couldn’t imagine. The attitude that they came in here with to help us with cleaning or painting blew me away, and I’m grateful to have had them, not only here at the stadium, but out there in our community. This was hopefully just the beginning of a long relationship with the York Rescue Mission.” Now the team is ready for the next organization to step into the batter’s box. Tile said the team hopes to begin discussions soon with local organizations and assess their needs and ability to take on the partnership. “We’re looking for a local group that is doing great things in our community that wants to tell their story to hundreds of thousands of Yorkers through this partnership. There is a significant investment in time and money as well as blood, sweat, and tears to make this thing work. We are dedicated to promoting these groups and working alongside their staff to spread the message while also raising money for the organization with which we partner.” For more information, please contact Nate Tile at (717) 801-4482 or ntile@yorkrevolution.com.
