BACKYARD GARDEN SHEDS Garages are often used to store the extra items that do not fit inside the home. But not everyone has a household garage, and if they do, they may prefer to use it to accommodate their family’s vehicles. While people may turn to self-storage units for extra storage space, garden storage sheds present another place where individuals can keep items out of sight but easily accessible. Homeowners may want to think about a shed purchase to keep outdoor lawn and garden essentials or sporting equipment in their own place. In addition, the new trend of “she sheds” and “man sheds,” where sheds are transformed into a craft oasis, reading nook, or sports fan haven, are becoming increasingly popular and providing yet another use for the space. The process of purchasing a shed is not as simple as finding the least- or most-expensive type on the market. There are other factors that come into play when selecting a shed. • Appearance and design: Although the function of a shed is typically to store items out of sight, the shed itself will be in full view in a yard. Therefore, plenty of homeowners prefer something that has just as much aesthetic appeal as it does storage capacity. An unsightly shed can affect the overall appearance of a property or even hurt the sale price for homeowners thinking about putting the home on the market. It's important to select a shed in a price range that also complements the style of the home so it coordinates with other features. Some people choose to have a custom-built shed that can replicate the architectural style of the home and even features the same siding and finishing materials.

• Size: Sheds come in a variety of sizes, from compact, locker-size sheds to large buildings that may even double as a garden room, pool room, or children’s playhouse. Homeowners should keep in mind that the size of the shed may have to meet local municipality rules for additions or structural changes to a property. A larger shed may require a permanent flooring material, such as concrete, and may be subject to permit applications and inspections, whereas a smaller shed may not have such stringent requirements. Furthermore, certain towns or homeowners associations may restrict the size and placement of a shed if it interferes with traffic visibility or impacts a neighbor in a negative way. • Siding materials: Sheds are constructed of various exterior materials. Some of the more affordable options are metal or plywood and particle board. However, these materials can be easily compromised by rain and snow. The most maintenance-free materials are vinyl or molded PVC-type plastics. Cedar and wood are popular siding choices but won't be maintenance-free. They need upkeep and also tend to be more expensive, but the cost may pay for itself in durability as well as an attractive appearance. • Minor enhancements: Touches like decorative architectural features, window boxes, shutters, or surrounding shrubs and plants around the shed can make it an integral part of the landscape instead of simply a storage structure. Double doors will ensure large pieces of equipment can fit inside the shed. The addition of a pressure-treated ramp at the entryway will provide easy access to the shed as well. The foundation of the shed also needs to be considered.

A well-organized shed can save homeowners time and energy. The first step to any organizing project is to take everything out of the shed and determine just what needs to go back in. Items that do not belong in the shed should be moved to their rightful locations or tossed in the trash if they're no longer needed. Make a pile of anything that will be kept, a separate one for donations, and a third for garbage. Take inventory to determine if anything is missing or needs to be replaced. Now that the entire shed is empty, assess just how much room there is. Utilizing vertical and overhead space effectively can free up areas on the floor for larger equipment. Shelving, racks, pegboards, and any other materials that allow items to hang or store off the floor are good investments. Cabinets can be installed in the shed to organize additional items. In order to remember where items go, label or sort them accordingly. Some people like to take organization a step further by tracing the outline of tools hung on the wall so they can be placed back in the same spot after use. This also serves as a visual reminder of which tools are missing and which ones need to be purchased. Don't forget to utilize shed doors as additional storage space. Hang frequently used tools such as rakes and shovels on the inside of the doors so they will always be easily accessible. Keep dangerous substances off the floor and out of reach. Gasoline, chemical fertilizers, and other potentially dangerous substances should be stored high up, out of the reach of pets and children. Make sure the shed floor is sturdy and level. This makes it easier to neatly store larger items or items that may otherwise roll.

There are many reasons to paint the interior of a home, and homeowners may be gearing up to tackle such a project this spring. However, potential safety hazards should be considered when planning to paint the interior of a home. Besides the injury risks associated with climbing up and down ladders to paint ceilings or out-of-reach corners, the biggest health risks tend to involve the chemical nature of paint. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the majority of paints contain chemicals that evaporate in the air, and these chemicals can adversely affect human health. Problems associated with chemicals found in some paints include eye and throat/lung irritation, headaches, dizziness, and vision trouble. Though painting is a relatively simple home improvement project, painters still should take the following precautions to help ensure their safety when painting the interior of their homes.

• Read product labels carefully. Paints vary considerably with regard to how hazardous they can be, so it's best to read paint can labels thoroughly. Labels provide safety instructions specific to that particular paint, including suggestions to reduce hazards and advice on what to do should users develop any a d v e r s e h e a l t h effects. It also helps

to re-read labels once the painting project has been completed. Labels often include instructions on how to clean or discard products and tools after use, as well as suggestions on where to store paints or other products used during the project that may be flammable.

• Paint during the right time of year. Exposure to chemicals found in paint can be reduced considerably by painting during the right time of year. Spring and fall make ideal seasons to paint, as the weather outside during these seasons is typically pleasant, allowing painters to open all of the windows without making conditions inside the home unfavorable. Choose a container or location. Decide where to place the fairy garden. A whimsical place such as a hollowed-out tree stump may provide an ideal outdoor setting, but containers such as old pots, hanging baskets, picnic baskets, or larger tins can be used just as well.
