WOMEN LOGGERS WILL COMPETE

By Dayna M. Reidenouer One of the unique features of the West Lampeter Fair is the professional entertainment that is presented several times a day. This year’s highlighted performers will be Axe Women Loggers of Maine.

The group is comprised of female athletes who strive to be the best in chopping, sawing, axe throwing, and log rolling.

Alissa Harper, from Bar Harbor, Maine, explained that she and her colleagues – who hail from Canada and the United States – have been touring North America for the past five years, but they have each been competing professionally for an average of 10 years.

Each show is set up like a competition, with the women competing against the others in feats of strength and skill.

“You can find a competition nearly every weekend from May to October, depending on how far you want to drive,” Harper remarked.

“One of our bigger competitions is … in Boonville, N.Y. It's the World's Open Lumberjill Contest. You have to send in applications and be selected to compete.”

Three lumberjills are slated to compete in Lampeter. Harper noted that the women will chop,

slice, and saw their way through about 30 cottonwood logs that they harvested at the beginning of August.

“We cut and bring all of our own chopping and sawing logs,” Harper said. “We'll be chopping with axes that come from New Zealand and Australia, and they cost between $400 and $700 (each).”

Although the wood chips will fly, the sport is safe to watch and compete in, Harper said. “Our sport is very safe, as long as you learn correctly and use common sense,” she continued. “We use safety gear for the chain saw events, and we use shin and foot protection in the chopping events, but it really just comes down to learning the correct techniques early on and keeping up good habits.”

Harper noted that the Axe Women train on their own time when they are not on tour. All of the women have chopping stands and axe-throwing targets in their backyards.

“We love our sport and hope to show people how fun and athletic it is,” Harper remarked. “There are several colleges that have woodsman teams now, and the sport seems to be growing in popularity.”

From One Court To Another: SAMBRICK TRANSITIONS FROM FAIR QUEEN TO TENNIS TEAM

By Dayna M. Reidenouer Sarah Sambrick has no qualms about playing tennis in front of large crowds. While a student at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, Sarah competed on the tennis team for four years, and she was the vice president of the Varsity Club her senior year. She plays tennis competitively for Millersville University, where she is currently a freshman.

For Sarah, playing tennis in front of a large audience is much more comfortable than speaking to that same group of people, so she felt some trepidation at the thought of competing for the title of the 2014 West Lampeter Fair Queen.

“Mr. (Angelo) Albanese kept asking me to (represent the Varsity Club),” Sarah recalled. “I always enjoyed watching the competition, but I never thought I’d be brave enough. Public speaking kind of scares me.”

Blessedly, Sarah was able to face her fear, and she not only entered the competition, but she won the title. Now, as her year as the reigning fair queen winds to a close, Sarah has no regrets.

“I’m very glad I did it,” she commented, noting that she has become much more comfortable speaking to groups of people.

One of the highlights of Sarah’s reign was participating in the state fair queen contest in January.

“I got to meet a lot of amazing girls,” Sarah said. “The contest teaches you about all the communities around you. It gave me an

Sarah noted that the state contest helped her to showcase her charisma. While she did not finish in the top 10, she received a few votes for the Miss Congeniality award.

Another highlight of being the West Lampeter Fair Queen was the interaction with children. Sarah has always enjoyed spending time with children, and she is pursuing a degree in elementary education.

“One of my favorite things was the little kids. I will miss their interest. When you have a crown on your head, they all want to be with you,” Sarah said. She recalled handing out apples with Santa Claus at the Strasburg Rail Road at Christmas, adding, “Some of the kids were scared of Santa, but they liked me because I was a princess.”

Children also flocked to Sarah during the week of the fair. As the fair queen, Sarah endeavored to visit all of the events, and she has especially fond memories of the baby parade and the sunflower contest. She also tried to visit all of the exhibitor booths to meet folks and thank them for their participation. Sarah credited fair queen coordinators Anita Martin and Tina Schockey for ensuring that she was in the right places at the right times.

The personal touch provided by the fair queen is what makes the role important, Sarah suggested.

“It really gives a face to the fair,” she said. “The judges strive to choose someone who will represent the fair well. They look for someone who embodies service, character, and West Lampeter Township. I’ve had the privilege of being that person this year.”

The West Lampeter Fair contest typically draws more than a dozen candidates because every club at the high school is asked to send a representative. Sarah learned at the state contest that high numbers of contestants in local competitions is unusual.

“We have a lot more contestants than other fairs,” she remarked.

“The way we (field contestants), we have a greater variety of people (competing), and that can be good.”

Sarah is the daughter of Jody and Laura Sambrick of Lancaster.

She has two older brothers, Jody and Jonathan.

Why You Should Come To My Fair An excerpt from the speech given by Sarah Sambrick at the 2015 Pennsylvania State Fair Queen Contest “Without a sense of caring, there can be no sense of community.”

– Anthony D’Angelo You should come to my fair because there is a true sense of caring.

The people in my community care deeply about our identity and about celebrating our agricultural foundation. Lancaster County is predominantly farmland, providing more than 51,000 jobs and contributing $4 billion per year to our local economy. Agriculture is who we are. It is for this reason that we don’t feel the need to have Ferris wheels or fancy rides. By not commercializing our fair but instead using it as a way to celebrate the hard work of the people who put food on our table, we create a unique atmosphere that you are unlikely to find anywhere else. ...Being the fair queen this year and spending about 20 hours at the fair gave me a chance to take part in events that I hadn’t previously experienced. I got to be a part of the sunflower judging contest, which was amazing. Seeing the children with the biggest smiles a child can have on their faces as they received their ribbons for everything from biggest to smallest sunflower was an experience I won’t forget.

We also have a baby parade where parents walk their children on elaborate floats in a loop around the fairgrounds. I got to talk to so many excited little Disney princesses while I helped with this event, particularly Elsas and Annas, and again, the joy that this event brought them was beautiful. We have a petting zoo, complete with a llama and a porcupine, although you may not want to pet him.

If you come to my fair and walk the grounds, there will be no shortage of proud and happy children who are eager to show you their prized cow, lamb, pygmy goat or pig. You would get to watch a rodeo and horse races in the arena that will keep you entertained for hours.

You could even learn how to make rope, if you wanted. ...No matter who you are or what you enjoy, there is something for you to enjoy at my fair.

Personally, fair week for me was always one of the best weeks of the year. The church my father pastors had a stand at the fair, so since I was a little girl, I’ve spent my whole fair week alternating between stand shifts and wandering the grounds, and I never got bored. I loved everything.

I remember walking through the art exhibits and seeing my own artwork hanging with all of my friends’ and feeling like Picasso himself. I remember wandering around the tents and talking to some of the friendliest people you could ever meet. People like Dave and Sue Martin, who ran our fair restaurant every day, preparing enormous portions of roast beef, chicken potpie, and every other comfort food that adds to why I love where I live.

These two wonderful people were awarded with the Fair Ambassador Award this year, and rightfully so. Dave has been on the fair board for upwards of 30 years, and Sue has been working in the fair restaurant for 15 years. I had the privilege of speaking with Sue, and out of curiosity I asked why she and her husband felt led to volunteer, and her answer was “It’s what we do. We have our health and time and give it to others in any way we can.” She said that the fair is a great event for our community, and it’s always been one of their favorites.

Come to my fair, and you’ll find plenty of people like Dave and Sue who give their time and energy freely purely because they recognize the importance of the West Lampeter Fair and because they care about making it as successful as it can be. ...My fair is not the flashiest, but if you are looking to come to a fair where people genuinely care about the hard work of each individual who works to make the community thrive, you should come to my fair. ...As important as it is to not turn a blind eye to all of the horrible things happening around the world, it is just as important to celebrate the goodness that is still thriving in our communities. That’s what the West Lampeter Fair does. By working together for three days of corn judging, livestock sales, rope spinning, and all of the other activities that I’ve come to appreciate over the years, we give a glimpse into what the world would look like if we all worked together.

Fritz Takes Home

All The Prizes

Ahh, prize ribbons.

Those cherished symbols that hard work paid off. With all of the contest categories and events at the West Lampeter Fair, prize ribbons are a big investment. For at least a decade, Kathy Fritz of Willow Street has been in charge of ensuring that each department has the prize ribbons it needs.

Fritz, who had previously served as a director of the fair, was asked by treasurer Lois Risser to take on a new role, picking up where former ribbon wrangler Diane Greenawalt left off. “(Risser) kind of twisted my arm into doing it. When I took this over, I thought, ‘How hard could it be?’” Fritz recalled, adding that the first year had a steep learning curve. She quickly established a system, however, and now the process is fairly simple to maintain.

“I order all the ribbons, rosettes, and trophies,” Fritz said. “I have to wait for all the departments to have their act together before I can start my job. I pretty much wait until the fair book is printed. I assume that we’re going to award every single prize in the fair book.

“We used to (print dates on the ribbons),” Fritz continued. “But it was a huge waste of money (because the ribbons couldn’t be reused).”

The ribbons from previous years are packed in boxes by department and stored in the fair office. After the premium book is published, Fritz takes the boxes home, where she inventories the ribbons and orders replacements. When the new stock arrives, she puts them in the appropriate boxes and carts everything back to the office. On the first day of the fair, the department chairs or their representatives pick up their respective boxes.

“So many have been doing it for many years that it’s just routine (to pick up their ribbons),” Fritz commented. Fritz sends any neglected boxes to their rightful custodians via Pioneer Interact volunteers, whom she praised for their service.

Fritz has no responsibilities during most of the fair, but afterward, the unused or uncollected ribbons get packed up until the following year.

“A lot of people are really into collecting their ribbons,” Fritz said, noting that there usually are not that many ribbons left behind.

Instead, she said, some winners take their ribbons but sign their prize checks back over to the fair. “A lot of people don’t want their checks,” she said. “It’s a donation back to the fair.”

Every donation helps, as the ribbons, trophies, and rosettes are an investment themselves. The order form is typically between seven and 10 pages long. For the 2014 fair, Fritz ordered more than $3,000 worth of prizes.

She noted that the cost for the prizes does not include the cost for the grand champion banners awarded in the livestock departments.

Michelle Winters is in charge of placing those orders.

Although most children and some adults would be sad not to take home ribbons to proudly display, Fritz downplayed her efforts for the fair.

“There are so many people who work on the fair year-round. It’s like their part-time job,” she said. “The fair is something that the people of the area really appreciate. They step up to help.”

Individuals who pick up this year’s West Lampeter Community Fair premium book are encouraged to take a good look at the cover. In the fullpage photo, rows and rows of canned goods with their award ribbons make a colorful image that conveys the agricultural character of the fair.

That photo, taken by Heather Shaubach of Paradise during the 2014 fair, was the winner of the fair’s annual cover photo contest. For the past six years, the fair book cover has featured a photograph taken at the previous year’s West Lampeter Fair.

Fair attendees with a good eye for composition and talent behind the camera lens are invited to keep a look out for a good shot, as they could be the next winner of the “Say Cheese” photo contest. Whether a person uses a sophisticated camera or the camera in a phone, he or she can enter the contest.

The first-place winner will have his or her photograph placed on the cover of next year’s fair book and will receive a $50 gift certificate from a Lancaster camera shop. The second- and third-place photos will receive $40 and $20 gift certificates provided by a photography studio.

The West Lampeter Fair’s photo contest is looking for photos from fairgoers that depict what makes the fair distinctive or what the fair means to them. “The photo should capture the spirit of the fair, which may include our tradition, competition, community and imagination,” the rules for the contest state.

Photos submitted to the contest may be posted on the fair’s website and possibly used in the fair book as well.

Photos must be taken during the three days of this year’s fair. A maximum of two photos per person will be accepted, in digital form only.

Photos must be in the highest resolution format that the camera can take, and all photos need to be in a vertical, portrait format, with open space at the top and bottom for wording. As the winning photo will be used on next year’s fair book cover, individuals should keep the shape and layout of the cover in mind when planning the photo.

Winners will be announced on the fair’s website by Monday, Nov. 30, with prize money distributed by Tuesday, Dec. 15.

The West Lampeter Community Fair is a longstanding tradition that continues to involve even the youngest members of the community. One of the first experiences that children in the Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg school districts have with the fair is the annual sunflower contest.

Each spring, FFA members in both districts fill envelopes with five to 10 sunflower seeds and growing instructions. The envelopes are then delivered to elementary school students in grades one through six, who are encouraged to plant the seeds and tend to the young plants throughout the spring and summer. The students are invited to enter their best seed heads in the sunflower contest. Each entry must be grown from the seed provided.

Sunflowers are typically easy to grow, increasing the odds that the children will have a good experience with the project. The number of entrants who successfully complete the project from seed to fair entry can vary from year to year as growing conditions fluctuate, but on several occasions there have been more than 100 entries in the contest.

Younger children in particular are enthusiastic about the competition, with the bulk of participants usually coming from grades one, two, and three.

Entrants should bring their best sunflowers to the horse arena at the fair on Thursday, Sept. 24, by 5 p.m. to be entered in the contest.

While the judging is going on, children typically wait around the edge of the arena with their parents and grandparents, all hoping to win a ribbon.

Entries are judged in four categories – the largest seed head, the most perfect overall sunflower head, the sunflower head showing the most perfect seed quality, and the sunflower head that exhibits the most overall attractiveness. The different categories allow room for the competition to include all of the students.

Grand and reserve grand champion ribbons will be awarded, as well as first-, second-, and third-place ribbons in each category. Each participant will receive an honorable mention ribbon.

Timing and weather conditions both naturally play roles in how well the sunflowers grow and what stage they will be in at fair time.

Some sunflowers that are planted earlier will be completely dried by the time of the contest, while others that got a later start may still have petals and may not yet have a fully developed seed head.

The size of the sunflower is not necessarily a factor. In the judging for the most attractive sections, for example, winners can be any size, with small flowers demonstrating as much beauty as larger blooms.

Growing sunflowers can be a great first experience with gardening and a wonderful opportunity for family members to share horticultural skills with youngsters.

It is also a great way to introduce children to the fair and encourage participation.
