“I love the Lampeter Fair. I would spend all day there if I could,” said Kaitlyn Lapp. As the 2013 West Lampeter Fair Queen, last year she got to do just that. After receiving the crown on Wednesday evening of last year’s fair, Kaitlyn spent all day Thursday and most of Friday at the three-day event.

“I loved wandering around all day, saying ‘hi’ to everyone,” Kaitlyn recalled. “It’s also surprising how exhausting smiling all day is,” she added, admitting, “They let me go home during a slow time on Friday and take a brief nap.”

The daughter of Amos and Freda Lapp of Lampeter, Kaitlyn was a senior at LampeterStrasburg High School when she took part in the fair queen competition. Her involvement with the fair, however, started much earlier.

“As soon as (our children) were born, we were taking them to the fair,” said Freda.

Notably, Freda has entered the Strasburg Area Woman’s Club soup cook-off at the fair three times, coming in first place twice. Kaitlyn has entered artwork in the fair and

served at stands run by Lampeter Church of the Brethren and Pioneer Interact.

“My earliest memory is of being (at the fair) with my preschool class, eating animal crackers in the grandstands,” Kaitlyn shared. She noted that the experience came full-circle during last year’s fair week, saying, “As queen, I got to talk to my cousin’s preschool class.”

Interacting with the youngest fairgoers was Kaitlyn’s favorite part of her job. She especially liked helping children find their parents after they entered the pig-catching contest.

Throughout the past year, Kaitlyn has made several appearances as the fair queen.

She was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Strasburg Lions Club, and she distributed apples with the club at Strasburg Railroad during the Christmas season. With her young cousins by her side, Kaitlyn also rode in the rumble seat of a 1929 Ford in the Strasburg

“Don’t stress about (the contest),” were Kaitlyn’s words of advice. “It’s a good experience to go through the contest part. Getting interviewed (by the judges) is a good experience (as well),” she added, explaining that the queen contest can be good practice for job interviews.

Kaitlyn will have started her first semester at the University of Pennsylvania by the time the 2014 fair begins. She plans to return to Lampeter on Wednesday, Sept. 24, for the fair queen contest. Kaitlyn will give a farewell address to the crowd, and she will also share the speech she delivered at the state contest. She will also have the privilege of crowning her successor and watching as the 2014 West Lampeter Fair Queen makes her first wave to the crowd.

“After the fair, I had to get used to not waving and smiling at everyone in public,” Kaitlyn commented with a grin.

“Brooklyn (Smoker) didn’t stop waving the entire time,” Kaitlyn said of her 4-year-old cousin.

Kaitlyn also had the privilege of representing the West Lampeter Fair in the state fair queen contest in January.

“For the most part, the girls were very much farm girls,” Kaitlyn remarked. “It was cool to see how other fairs do the fair queen competition.”

While other fairs open up their contests to the public, West Lampeter Fair obtains its fair queen candidates from Lampeter-Strasburg High School, with each young lady representing a school-sanctioned organization. Last year, Kaitlyn represented the school’s quiz bowl team. Now that Kaitlyn has successfully completed her reign, she has been providing encouragement and insight to the individuals who will compete for the crown of the 2014 West Lampeter Fair Queen.

“These changes took time, talk, and thought, but it makes the fair more fun over all,” Mylin suggested.

“This is the Lampeter Fair; it is not the Guggenheim. It is competition, but it is also (a) community.”

The art department is also “fair,” Mylin said with a chuckle at his pun.

“We get judges who know the specific media to judge. A professional photographer not entered into the show judges the professional category, and two other professional photographers judge the amateur portions. Professional artists judge the artwork, and craftspeople judge the crafts.”

It takes many people working behind the scenes during Fair Week to make it successful. All of the items are entered during an eight-hour window on the Tuesday before the fair officially opens. Volunteers ensure that items are entered into the proper categories and displayed correctly. Still others keep a close eye on the items.

“We need the community’s participation to make (the art department) what it is,” said committee member Tim Stoltzfus. “Some do not enter for fear of vandalism. Let me assure you, there are folks in that building the whole time who do nothing but watch (spectators’) hands. Besides, what is something worth unless you let others see it?”

Artwork that catches the eyes of the judges and fairgoers alike must be presented well, Mylin stressed.

Judges also look for composition, color, and craftsmanship.

mind. Those were the winners,” Mylin recalled. “But then again, at this fair we all win (when we view) all of the variety of visual work displayed.

The best advice is (to) do your very best and see what happens.”

Mylin noted that the art department is a vital part of the fair because it allows community members to experience art in a simple and fun way. “It raises discussions about the artwork, and everybody is an art critic,” he explained. “But let me emphasize that ribbons do not make an artist or craftsman; it is the experience and the work completed that does that. We live in a world of instant gratification and fast paced living. Art can and does slow you down enough to ‘smell the flowers,’ to look at the world in a different light, and (to) allow it

Are you a budding or accomplished artist? Do you want to see ideas in person rather than on Pinterest? Are you curious as to the creativity of your community? Then a visit to the art department at the West Lampeter Fair is in order.

Located in the upper building on the fairgrounds, Department 19 covers the field of art. This includes crafts made from natural materials such as seeds, shells, feathers, and pine cones; quilling; special occasion or holiday items; Christmas crafts; baskets; glazed and molded ceramics; scrapbook layouts; handcarved wooden items; handmade wooden furniture; wooden toys and dollhouses; jewelry made with beads or tooled metal; and all kinds of artwork. Pieces that have been computer-generated or which feature graphic design elements are in their own class, separate from the classes of mixed media, oil painting, and wheel-thrown pottery. Photography has its own subsection as well.

A committee of volunteers oversees the art department, working year-round to make sure everything runs smoothly during the fair. Department chair Sam Mylin reported that several changes have been made in the past few years. The first was to open the photography category to both professional and amateur photographers, as the category is so popular. Along with that, the committee removed the requirement that amateur photos be displayed in frames. Instead, they must be submitted in plastic sleeves for display purposes. “It has given us a lot more room,” Mylin commented.

In the fine art division, the classes were regrouped so that more media could be represented, Mylin added. This year, the craft area was

Rules Of Thumb:

How To Make Exhibiting In The Fair

• Don’t wait until the last minute to enter items.

“The most time-consuming part is entry day, the Tuesday prior to the fair.

Everything that is entered in the fair comes in in an eight-hour window, much of it in a four-hour window (at the end of the day). That is a lot to organize,” Stoltzfus said. “Even after entries stop coming, that is when the work really starts. We must evaluate how much space we have and how to fill it but keep it organized at the same time.”

• Register at the fair office before taking artwork and crafts to the home economics building.

To streamline the entry system, every individual is assigned a number at the fair office. That number is then included on every item entered in the fair. The numbers provide a simple way to track entries and to store contact information in a secure location in case it is ever needed.

• Come prepared to label entries with category name and number.

While volunteers will have premium books handy for folks to look up the missing information, arriving with the information in hand will speed up the entry process.

• Be aware of item limits or requirements in each category.

Most, if not all, categories stipulate that an individual may enter a maximum of one item (or group of items, for comparing uniformity across a type of product such as cookies or field corn) per category. The art department restricts all entries to one per category per person.

• Pay attention to the details.

“I can say, as far as woodworking is concerned, that to win, a piece must have the highest of quality,” said Stoltzfus, who served as a judge last year.

“Don't show me something with a drop of glue running down the side. (I don’t want to see) obvious errors. (The item) also must show creativity and refined skill.”

“Presentation is the biggest thing,” Mylin added. “If the artwork is not presented well, the judges might not see it. Also, they look for composition, color, and craftsmanship. They are looking for quality, skill, and best effort in a visual way.”

• Pay attention to the fine print.

“If you frame your photo, you are entering the professional category,” Mylin said. “All amateur photos must be unframed and unmatted to be entered,” he stressed.

• Items absolutely may not be removed before the fair closes at 10 p.m. on Friday.

“No excuses. If you cannot pick up your artwork on Friday night, talk to us when entering or you can pick it up on Saturday morning,” Mylin said.

“I have had senior citizen entrants in the fair who do not drive at night, so they gave me their card to pick it up for them. Without your card, the artwork stays. So, please be courteous when picking up your work.”

• You’ll never win if you don’t enter.

“I believe the process is more valuable than the outcome; however, the outcome is exciting too,” Mylin commented. “I believe the art department adds value to the fair because of the use of creativity and visual mastership. It allows everybody to show their skills on a level where it is serious enough to share to the community, yet fun enough to go through the process of entering and seeing how it gets judged. Creativity is valuable. Art is valuable. And this department reflects the creativity of the community.

The artwork and craftsmanship presented over the years that I have seen is improving. To me, this is gold.”

The familiar “putt-putt-putt” of antique tractors causes heads to turn as antique tractors parade through the fairgrounds on the first day of the fair each year. While Department 24 is open to all sorts of antique farm equipment, owners of antique tractors have several opportunities to show off their beloved iron workhorses.

For the purpose of the fair, “antique” is defined as tractors built in 1959 or earlier, and vehicles must be in stock or almost-stock condition. Tractors that are judged on appearance may be entered in separate categories according to whether they are restored or in original condition.

At 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept.

24, the antique tractors will drive in a parade around the fairgrounds.

Afterward, there will be a tractor pull, in which drivers will demonstrate that their antiques are still in prime working condition.

The antique tractors will be parked for most of the fair, however, and fairgoers may take close looks at the machines. One of the tractors that will be on display is a 1957 John Deere 320 series that a group of Lampeter-Strasburg High School students restored during two months this past spring.

Purchased in “well-used” condition by local farmer and John Deere enthusiast Harry Spade, the tractor had been kept in storage for approximately 10 years and was rusted and missing several parts. Spade connected with practical arts teacher Stephen Smith and arranged for the tractor and machinery class to bring the

tractor up to snuff.

An assessment of the tractor showed that the engine had already been rebuilt, but the rest of the machine needed to be torn apart and refurbished from the ground up. With Smith's guidance, the students split the tractor in half and opened the transmission cover, replacing and repairing parts. The students also took apart and added new seals and bearings throughout the tractor, reworked the ignition system, replaced the front tires, and did extensive body work to the hood and grills.

"A definite challenge for our team was putting the parts back on the tractor," Smith remarked. "We had a few original manuals, but the (students) worked hard finding supplemental materials on the Internet and using every resource they could find to rebuild it. They did a great job and should be very proud."

The students applied several coats of paint to the tractor to put it in prime condition for its return to its owner. Smith reported that Spade was very pleased with the result of the project. Fairgoers may see for themselves how the project turned out. If the judges like what they see, the antique might be sporting a new ribbon!

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Friends Of The Forceâ&#x20AC;?

By Dayna M. Reidenouer Dozens of organizations and businesses are represented at the West Lampeter Fair each year. Some, like the wildly popular Herrâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, give out snack food samples. Others provide information about the latest brandname or home-business products.

Still others, such as the Friends of the West Lampeter Township Police Department, are on hand to provide a

service to the community. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The West Lampeter Fair is an annual rite of passage,â&#x20AC;? said Friends member Bob Bodnar. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important for us to be there.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The fair gives us a chance to interface with citizens year after year,â&#x20AC;? added Friends member Jim Kulp.

The Friends of the Force has two purposes, Bodnar explained. On one hand, the Friends assist the police department in obtaining equipment that improves safety and

efficiency but that is not covered by the departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual budget.

The Friends group also helps to improve the interaction between the police and community members. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Blending the community with the police department makes a stronger, safer community,â&#x20AC;? Bodnar remarked. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They should feel comfortable together. The better (the police and community members) interact on a casual basis, the better (everyone) will be overall.â&#x20AC;?

The Friends will have information about the groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s purpose at the fair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have (details on) Project Lifesaver at our booth,â&#x20AC;? Kulp said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Folks can sign up for it and get information about the program.â&#x20AC;?

Project Lifesaver was developed by Pilot Club International and was rolled out in the township earlier this year. The program provides a monitoring system for individuals who are prone to wander due to autism, dementia, and

other serious issues.

The Friends will also have on display equipment that the group has purchased for the police department. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The past five years weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been in existence, the community has been very generous in donations, which helps the police department,â&#x20AC;?

Bodnar remarked.

The departmentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new chief is also slated to spend time at the booth in order to meet the citizenry. Brian Wiczkowski will have spent only a month in his role by the time of the fair. Previously, he built a career in policing at the Lancaster Bureau of Police, most recently serving as captain of the community policing division. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a really nice man,â&#x20AC;? Kulp commented.

Fairgoers who want to seek out the Friends of the Force should start their search in the two long tents. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re usually in the east end of one of the two long tents,â&#x20AC;? Kulp stated.
