Community Involvement Highlights
2016 QUEEN’S REIGN By Dayna M. Reidenouer Community connections inspired McKenna Kimmel to compete for the title of 2016 West Lampeter Fair Queen. “Chelsea (Hancock) really loved being fair queen (in 2015),” McKenna related. “We were on the school board together.” McKenna had been selected by her peers at Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School to serve as a student representative to the school board during her junior and senior years. That experience, along with Chelsea’s enthusiasm for her role as fair queen, gave McKenna the confidence to enter the competition. Her confidence paid off, and she was named fair queen in 2016. “I wanted some public speaking opportunities … Saying the memorized introduction, I was the most nervous I’ve ever been,” McKenna recalled of the fair queen competition. “There were a lot more people than I’m used to.” That is not to say that McKenna was a leadership novice, as she served as a class officer for three years and as Aevidum president while a senior. Additionally, she was a member of the Asian Culture Club and Pioneer Interact for four years. She played lacrosse and ran cross-country for three years and was a member of Varsity Club and National Honor Society as a junior and a senior. Additionally, McKenna is a competitive archer, and a few years ago, she launched a business selling archery-themed apparel for women and children. As she progressed through her year as reigning fair queen, McKenna viewed some of her experiences through a business-minded lens. The state fair queen competition in January was particularly relevant. “The seminars were helpful,” McKenna said. “As a whole, (the state competition) made me more confident. If I can memorize a five-minute speech, I can handle business.” Even apart from the competitions, McKenna enjoyed her time as fair queen. During the fair itself, she helped to present awards, interacted with community members, and helped with the auction of leftovers. The greased pig chase conducted in the rain was especially memorable. “The weather wasn’t the best (for the fair), but it was so fun,” McKenna said. The West Lampeter Community Fair is an agriculture-themed event, and as McKenna does not have an agricultural background, she was invited to tour several farm-based businesses. She received a first-hand look into dairy, poultry, and hydroponics operations. McKenna noted that as far as she knows, she is the first fair queen
who has had these tours, and she expressed her deep gratitude for the privilege. “Lancaster is so well-known for soil and agriculture that I wanted to learn about where I live,” she said. McKenna shared that her favorite part of serving as fair queen was getting involved with the community. She gave presentations to various service organizations and attended fair board meetings. “There’s a lot of work that goes into planning a fair,” she said. “I love how the fair brings the community together.” Having graduated from L-S earlier this year, McKenna is now attending Penn State University, where she is majoring in corporate innovation and entrepreneurship and minoring in Mandarin Chinese. She is considering a second minor in international business. McKenna will return home to give a farewell speech at this year’s fair queen competition and to crown her successor. “I definitely want to come back and see who wins,” she remarked. McKenna is the daughter of Scott and Wendy Kimmel, and she is big sister to Kelsey and Rowan. McKenna and Wendy have the same advice for the new queen: Learn to manage your time well. “It seemed like the state competition was so far away, but it really wasn’t,” Wendy said. “You need to work on your five-minute speech; you just can’t wing it,” McKenna added. Wendy also offered this word of encouragement to the new royalty: “Relax and enjoy the experience.”

“Mutts Gone Nuts” To Return
By Marcella Peyre-Ferry Some things have changed since the last time Mutts Gone Nuts was the featured entertainment at the West Lampeter Fair, and audiences are sure to enjoy them. Mutts Gone Nuts showcases the talents of rescue dogs and has appeared in front of audiences across the country. The act made an appearance at the 2012 fair, engaging and thrilling audiences with the canine athletics. At the same time, performers Joan and Scott Houghton were entranced by the fair and are excited to be returning to West Lampeter. “It’s a very unique fair. I’d never been to a fair where, instead of motor sports or monster trucks, the big event for the night was a tug-of-war. I thought that was awesome,” Scott said. “I really like the fair because it seemed like it was more based on agriculture. I was fascinated.” In addition to the husband-and-wife team of the Houghtons, a new face has joined the act. Samantha Valle brings her dogs and their special skills to the performances, adding a new dimension to the already-great act. “She has added a whole new element to our show. She’s a worldclass trainer and dog handler. Her dogs are fantastic,” Scott said. “I liked our show before she came on, but she’s added a lot. When she’s not working with us, she does a lot of NCAA and NFL halftimes. Her dogs are some world-class canine athletes.” Based in Damascus, Md., the Houghtons use nine dogs in their show. One important feature of Mutts Gone Nuts is the fact that the dogs have all come from rescues or shelters. “We like to talk about that in every show and encourage people when they get a cat or dog for their family to go to the animal shelter or Humane Society,”
Scott said. “We talk about responsible pet ownership, spay - neuter and rescue.” Highlights to look for during the shows include the high jumping skills of Feather. “Feather is a greyhound who is jumping world-record heights. She’s jumping over 60 inches,” Scott said. “She has become a crowd favorite. People love her. People aren’t used to seeing greyhounds except on the track. She’s a different-looking dog.” Each dog has a specialty. “We often finish the show with Geronimo, who is a cattle dog. She’s an awesome Frisbee dog, who has a great routine with flips and vaults that are mind-blowing,” Scott said. “Also, she jumps rope double dutch, and she has a Guinness Book World Record for canine double dutch jumping, so she’s a standout as well.” Mutts Gone Nuts will be performing at the fair multiple times each day, so there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to catch the act. For an advance look or to learn more, readers may visit www. muttsgonenutts.com or find Mutts Gone Nuts on Facebook. One of the future performances scheduled for Mutts Gone Nuts is a New Year’s Eve show at Heinz Field during the Pittsburgh Steelers game.

Youth Livestock Sale To Cap Fair Week
By Dayna M. Reidenouer The Youth Market Beef, Hog, Lamb, Dairy Beef, and Goat Sale is a longstanding tradition of the West Lampeter Fair and has remained essentially unchanged. This year, however, the order in which the types of animals are sold will be reversed from previous years. When the sale begins in the show ring at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, goats will be the first animals on the auction block. They will be followed by sheep, hogs, dairy beef, and steers. “We’re doing the exact opposite (order) we’ve done for 30 years,” said Emily Welk, a member of the sale committee and chair of the goat committee. “Most of the fairs rotate (the order) every year. We’re really one of the only fairs that (doesn’t rotate).” While there are benefits to maintaining the same schedule – folks who wanted to bid on steers knew to arrive before 6:30 p.m., while those bidding on goats could wait until 9:30 p.m. – there was at least one significant drawback. “Businesses come with only so much money to spend,” Welk explained. “By the time we get to the end of the auction, there isn’t as much money for the (exhibitors). We will rotate (the sale order) each year. We’re giving all the kids a chance to sell first.” Welk noted that the West Lampeter Fair is a terminal show, and everyone who enters an animal will sell it. Some fairs have a nonsale option so that animals can be shown at other fairs, but even those animals will be sold at some point. If exhibitors want to keep their animals, they must be bought back through the sale. Most of
the time, however, the youths want their animals to sell to others in order to recoup their expenses. “Market price won’t cover the cost (of raising a show animal), but the sale price does,” Welk said. “Show feed is more expensive, and the time you put into it is more expensive.” Many of the exhibitors contact businesses and individuals before the fair via buyer letters to ask for their support at the auction. Folks who have not received buyer letters are welcome to participate, however. When they register at the event with Ashley Herr Miller, bidders will receive a packet containing information about each animal, including the market price. At registration, bidders will also be able to select the buy-back option. Welk explained that an arrangement has been made with the New Holland Sales Stables to buy animals at the market price so that winning bidders do not need to deal with the animals directly. The buyers will pay the winning bid minus the buy-back price, and the sale committee will take care of shipping the animals to New Holland. The youth livestock sale typically grosses close to $200,000, and 98 percent of the money goes to the exhibitors. The remaining 2 percent goes to cover the cost of running the sale and providing dinner for buyers. “Once everyone has paid, the (sellers) get their checks,” Welk remarked. “We’d like you to pay that night, but some of the bigger buyers have to send it through (their) accounting (department).” “Back in my day, we didn’t have a buy-back program,” recalled

Gary Dean, who was active in 4-H as a youth and then served as a leader for 25 years. “I had a local butcher who always pulled my steer, so we were fortunate in that. In the worst-case scenario, (winning bidders) took (their animals) to the stockyards. Dean makes the fair circuit each year, buying animals on behalf of his employer, Hess Mills. “I go to most sales where we have customers that buy feed from us, Dean said. “I try to support my customers; I try to bid on everything. Ideally, I’d like to buy one (animal) from every family that buys feed from us. The West Lampeter Fair has a special place in Dean’s heart. “That’s my home fair. It’s where I exhibited as a kid, he said. As an experienced buyer, Dean offered advice for newcomers. “Have fun bidding, he said. “It’s pretty easy to calculate what you’re spending because they will have a value on the animal. “It goes for a great cause, he continued. “I understand what great programs 4-H and FFA are for young people. It’s one of the great things kids can do these days. Hopefully they make a little out of (selling their animals) that can go to their college fund. Along with the confidence of knowing they have supported dedicated youths, many buyers will also receive tokens of gratitude from the exhibitors. “My kids always write thank-you notes and find the buyers in the stand, Welk said. “A lot of kids (give a gift like) whoopie pies, shoofly pies, or flowers. “I’ve received cookies, cupcakes, and chocolates. Sometimes at Christmastime, I get Christmas cookies. That’s always nice. Not everybody does that, Dean said. “When my daughter was in it, we made a special effort to go around (at Christmas) and give poinsettias to everyone who bought her animals that year. In Dean’s opinion, expressing gratitude is part of the educational process. “Everybody has time to write a letter to invite you to the sale, he said. “It only take five minutes to write a thank-you note.
