2012 Fair Queen on

You’re representing a whole community, not just yourself.

‘Ambassador’ is a better word for it.”

After winning the title of 2012 West Lampeter Fair Queen last September, Leah Weigel has spent the year representing the fair at various functions and locales.

“I’ve learned to be myself, and I’ve gained an appreciation for agriculture,” Weigel added.

Weigel graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School in June and is a freshman at Berklee College of Music in Boston. While in high school, one of her activities was playing alto saxophone

Her Reign in the Concert Band. The fair queen contestants are chosen by the clubs in which they participate, and the band members nominated Weigel to represent them.

In addition to playing the saxophone, Weigel is also a singer and has written an estimated 25 to 30 songs. She would like to write a book of songs for music therapy.

“Her strength is in her writing, her lyrics,” Weigel’s mother, Jane, commented.

“I love writing,” Weigel said. “The fair is so interesting to talk about. I can use so many descriptive words.”

Weigel has had the opportunity to speak about the fair at meetings of civic groups, at Farm City Days in Harrisburg, and at the state fair board

convention where she competed for the title of Pennsylvania Fair Queen.

“I felt that I represented the fair well,” Weigel recalled. “(The judges) asked what pepper jelly was,” she added, noting that she mentioned the Lancaster County condiment during her pageant speech.

Weigel also enjoyed visiting the Life Skills class at Lampeter Elementary School. On the day that the class learned the letter “Q,” the fair queen and runner-up Lexi Weaver dropped in to interact with the students and sing songs with them.

“I have liked the children’s enthusiasm (about the queen),” Weigel said. “I’m going to miss the opportunities of having a say (as a person of import) and talking to the kids… They put you on a pedestal.”

Weigel noted that she will also miss spending three straight days at the fair. After she was crowned on Wednesday evening last year, she spent all day Thursday and Friday at the event, greeting visitors, helping to judge the sunflower contest, and handing prizes to winners in the livestock shows.

“I never thought that I’d be posing with live animals,” Weigel remarked.

Serving as fair queen is another memory that Weigel has added to her collection

She has entered jewelry and metalworked pieces for judging, and she caught the pig in the greased-pig contest as a fifth-grader.

“I take great pride in that,” Weigel said of catching the pig.

Although she has a greater appreciation for animals since the last year, Weigel’s favorite part of the fair is the craft tent.

“I really like the kids’ art,” she said. “It’s really cute, (and I like) the creativity.”

Weigel will conclude her year of service by crowning her replacement on Wednesday, Sept. 25. She will sing the national anthem, and she will recite her state pageant speech and give a farewell address. “I want to thank the community,” Weigel said. “They’ve given me a lot of support as I’ve grown up. I’m grateful to have a community to represent. When writing my (pageant) speech, I could be extremely genuine about my (love for) my community.”

This year, West Lampeter Fair attendees might notice that their visits to the rest rooms are more comfortable than in previous years. That is because the fair board has made some much-needed improvements.

According to general manager Don Herr, the rest rooms at the fair were built in 1968.

Recently, after many years of discussing the need to improve the facilities – which were not adequate to accommodate the crowds that visit the fair – the board approved

As part of the project, the entire building was remodeled. In addition to the rest rooms, Pavilion 2, as it used to be known, houses the fair office, the treasurer’s office, and the plant and fruit entries. With the renovation, the building was extended by 25 feet, and new trusses and a new roof were put over the enlarged structure. The treasurer’s office was made into a secure space, so that standholders who need to make deposits or change bills may do so through a walk-up window.

The fair office, which was previously rather crowded, now has ample space to accommodate the many volunteers who work behind the scenes to make the fair run smoothly. People who enter items in the fair will experience an improved traffic flow when they apply for contestant numbers at the beginning of the event and collect their winnings at the end of it.

The old rest rooms have been converted into storage space. The new ladies’ room has 10 toilets and three sinks, which hopefully will help to alleviate the long lines that used to form during busy evenings at the fair. The men’s room has been expanded as well, and there is also a separate handicapped-accessible, individualuse restroom with a diaperchanging station. Two propane tanks next to the restroom provide fuel for the water heater

so that the rest rooms will have hot water for the first time. The propane will also be used to heat the rest rooms, enabling them to be used year-round.

“It came out really nice,” Herr remarked. “We’re pleased.”

Herr noted that the new facilities have already been used successfully for National Night Out and the 4-H Livestock Roundup.

“The new facilities improve the overall functions of the fair and the community,” Herr said. “They’re here for the fair and other activities at the grounds.”

The construction was paid for by the fair board from money raised through the food stands. The board operates the fair restaurant (located in the Lampeter Fire Company’s station on Lampeter Road) and the dairy bar. The other food stands all give a percentage of their income to the fair.

Entertain All Ages

Flow Circus will be the featured entertainment at this year’s West Lampeter Fair. Juggler, magician, and comedian Paul Miller will delight people of all ages with his lively and interactive performances that set audiences laughing as well as amaze them with feats of wonder.

Miller frequently performs at libraries and schools as well as in fair settings. "At a fair, you start out

with a smaller crowd than you end up with," he said, explaining how audiences are drawn to the performance. Sometimes, he will begin with a few tricks from his act as he makes his way to the arena before he even begins his show to help build interest in the crowd.

"We start with a five-ball juggling routine, which is a great way to kind of engage the audience and have a lot of interaction and play," Miller said.

Miller's one-man show engages audiences of all ages in experiences of play that captivate, energize, and inspire. Miller has the technical skills of an experienced juggler, the flair of a magician, and the wit of a comedian.

He describes his comedic style as a cross between the "improvisational craziness of Robin Williams and the ridiculousness of Steve Martin."

"The juggling is an excuse to engage the audience in improvisational play," Miller remarked.

Miller presents 100 percent clean comedy in a Vaudevillestyle performance that incorporates juggling, magic, physical comedy, and improvisation. Audiences may see fire torches lighting up the night sky, glow-in-the-dark balls dancing to background music, or total surprises.

"Family audiences are the best audience. I don't play down to the kids, and I don't play up to the adults," Miller said. "My favorites are the older tweens and teens that are sitting there not expecting to enjoy the show. It really grips them with the comedy and my character."

Miller is based in North Carolina, traveling from there to perform all along the East Coast. He has performed at a number of libraries in Pennsylvania, including Lancaster.

The connection to libraries is a strong one, particularly be-

cause he first learned to juggle 20 years ago by reading how to do it in a book.

Although Miller studied accounting in college, he was drawn to performing. "After college I got a job waiting tables. I was entertaining my customers with juggling and small magic. I found that the better I got, the more tips I got," he said. "After a bunch of years I got pretty good, and I started putting together shows. The more you do it, the better you get and the more you find yourself."

Miller's wife, Dawn Daria, worked as a teacher in public schools for six years, and she brings her knowledge of education to Flow Circus. Peformances for school groups entertain and engage students in the development of healthy lifestyles and character development.

"Through the juggling arts we want to teach kids to be active and play," Miller said.

"It's going to be a really fun show."

Interspersed among the booths hosted by commercial and civic groups at the West Lampeter Fair are some that represent local churches. Volunteers at these booths will be happy to tell visitors more about their churches; plus, they add extra fun and fellowship for fair goers with giveaways and activities for everyone.

One of the most popular spots is the booth with a discrete baby changing station provided by Grace Church at Willow Valley. The church has been offering this service along with a partitioned

area for the privacy of nursing mothers for many years at the fair.

"We decided it would be good to have a presence at the fair. At the same time, we wanted to do something that might meet a need the community would have," pastor John F. Smith said.

In addition to the changing station, Grace Church has also added an "Ask the Pastor" booth, where visitors can come with questions about the Bible, God, and spirituality. "Sometimes the questions can be really deep," Smith remarked.

churches to have a booth at the fair, and over the years, participation has grown.

Most will offer information to visitors, while others will include handouts, activities, or opportunities to interact with church members. Last year, the Lampeter campus of Providence Church offered crafts for children, and Pequea Church even offered a photo booth in one of the tents.

In addition to an informational booth, Pequea Church runs the chicken sandwich stand each year. This year, the church is condensing its efforts by concentrating on just the food stand instead of the informational booth.

"We've had a regular chicken stand for years," said Melissa Eshbach, director of the church's preschool. "It's a fundraiser for the church."

The stand features grilled chicken sandwiches, with approximately 80 volunteers working to cook and serve customers. Because it is lo-

cated away from most of the other food booths, near the livestock exhibitors, it is a convenient spot for show entrants who do not want to go far from their animals.

"We serve a lot of 4-H competitors," Eshbach said.

In her time working at the chicken stand each year, Eshbach has come to see that it is an important part of the fair in several ways. "When I started, I saw it only as fundraising and a way for families to connect by serving. Now I see it as a way to connect to the community.

We have our interactions with (fair goers)," she said.

"It really is a way for us to reach out to the larger community."

Marching Bands Continue Long-standing Tradition ENGLE PRINTING & PUBLISHING CO., INC.

By Dayna M. Reidenouer Among the many unique components of the West Lampeter Fair is the involvement of the LampeterStrasburg School District’s marching bands. The middle school marching band traditionally leads the parade of fair queen contestants from the high school to the large arena on the fairgrounds on Wednesday. The high school marching band takes its turn in the spotlight on Thursday evening.

“Having graduated from L-S in ’90, my sisters in ’79 and ’84, the band has played at the fair on Thursday night at 6 p.m. for as long as I can remember,” said high school band director Larry Royer. “It

is a great way for us to support the community and give back to them. The Lampeter Fair is a wonderful tradition spanning so many decades – my grandfather was actually a member of the planning committee back in the ’40s – that we just are grateful to be part of it.”

In addition to performing music at the fair, the band

members also serve up burgers. The burger bar, located in the same pavilion as the milk shake stand, is primarily staffed by band parents.

“For me, the highlight of the fair every year is the cheeseburgers,” commented D. Scott Loose, the middle school band director. “I know it is a lot of work for the band parents, but they always

turned it into a fun community service.”

Loose, who is retiring in October, has so many good memories of the West Lampeter Fair that they have all run together.

“From the middle school band escorting the fair queen candidates into the show ring to the high school band performance as a warm up to the greased pig contest, the hometown agriculturally based fair is something that has been frozen in time,” Loose remarked. “Other high school band directors would always ask me about it.

Most of them do the various fair parades in the fall, but the Lampeter Fair is totally unique.”
