Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Meetings are held on the

f ourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually. In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held

via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to

know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”

Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”

To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717381-3599 or jalbright@ landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

Artists Sought To Exhibit At Train Station

The City of Lancaster’s Office of Public Art invites artists to create site-specific work to be exhibited in two glass-enclosed cases located on the south side of the Lancaster Amtrak Train Station concourse in 2023. The deadline to submit a proposal is Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at 5 p.m.

The Lancaster Amtrak Station is the second-busiest Amtrak station in Pennsylvania, boasting an annual ridership of nearly 600,000 in the last fiscal year. The station’s display cases have historically served as a mode for celebrating local artists and arts organizations through an annually scheduled rotation of exhibitions.

Finalists will be chosen from the pool of submissions by a selection committee using a set of standardized criteria.

Selected finalists will be required to present their project to the Public Art Advisory Board (PAAB). Three artists will ultimately be selected,

with each exhibiting for three months.

If you look out your window on New Year’s Day, you may see a crowd of motorcycles zooming down the road. They are part of an annual ride to benefit veterans.

“ We take the same route every year, and people know about it, so they come out and kids come out holding flags and cheering us on,” said Tyler Stumpf, one of the event organizers. “It’s become a New Year’s tradition.”

The is the 14th year for the event, which will be held on Sunday, Jan. 1. Registration will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the ride will leave from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. The ladies auxiliary will serve breakfast items before the ride.

The 25-mile ride will follow a route along the Susquehanna River and conclude at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, 240 N. Hanover St., where a pork and sauerkraut meal will be served following the ride. An auction will be held there as well, featuring items donated by local businesses. T-shirts and

patches will also be for sale. Proceeds from the event will benefit veterans in the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Since its inception, the ride has raised more than $240,000, Stumpf said, adding, “We will hit the quarter-million mark this year.”

Each year, the event includes fun traditions such as Baby New Year, when a participant is chosen for the honor and must attend in a baby costume and sash. This year’s honoree is Brian Landvader.

Over the years, the ride has grown significantly, Stumpf said. “We started with 11

motorcycles, and now we’re averaging about 400 motorcycles,” he commented. “When all the bikes are lined up on Main Street in Mount Joy, it’s really something to see.”

Billy Hecht, who is also helping to organize the ride, said the event has continued to be popular because it not only offers a fun excursion for participants, but it also supports an important cause. “A lot of people like that the money stays local,” he noted. “One hundred percent of the money goes strictly to the veterans’ needs.”

The event will be held rain, snow or shine, and partici-

pants are encouraged to come with any form of transportation. “You don’t have to come with a motorcycle,” Hecht shared. “You can drive a car or a truck. You can come in any vehicle.”

For more information on the event, call Stumpf at 717468-6197 or Hecht at 717283-6379.

Cadets from the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 participated in two activities on Nov. 12.

Cadets presented the colors and a POW/MIA table at the veterans’ luncheon for Trinity Church in Lititz on Nov. 12.

Participating cadets were Cadet Cpt. Reilly Sollenberger, Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Mary Weinheimer, Cadet Chief Master Sgt. Ryan McNally, and Cadet Senior Master Sgt. Slater Shannon.

The training of the Squadron Color Guard is supervised by 1st Lt. Donald Reisch.

The presentation of colors consisted of the ceremony of presenting and retiring the flag. Color guards are often seen at events, carrying the colors to represent the service of the armed forces.

The POW/MIA table is displayed to signify those who are missing but are not forgotten. Each detail of the table symbolizes an aspect of the

POW/MIA’s life or fate, or of those whom they left behind. Set at the table is a plate containing a slice of lemon signifying the service member’s bitter fate and a small amount of salt symbolizing the tears of those missing and their families. The single red rose stands for the service member’s loved ones, and the red ribbon represents the service member’s love of his or her country. The yellow candle and its yellow ribbon symbolize hope for a joyous reunion with those yet unaccounted for.

Service to one’s community, state and nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within the Civil Air Patrol.

Cadets from the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 also participated in the model rocket launch at the Hambright Elementary School in Lancaster, hosted by the Southern Pennsylvania Area Association of

Rocketry (SPAAR).

Rocketry is one of the fundamental aerospace education topics taught to cadets in the Civil Air Patrol. Cadets attending the rocketry launch constructed their own individual rockets. A successful launch and recovery is one of the milestones toward earning the rocketry badge.

The cadets who participated were Cadet Airman 1st Class T. Carter Bojako of East Earl, Cadet Senior Airman Brady J. Dougherty of Willow Street, Cadet Senior Master Sgt. Trevor A. Jones of East Earl, and Cadet Senior Master Sgt. Slater J. Shannon of East York. The event was coordinated by Lt. Col. Glenn C. Baugher of Lancaster, who is also the squadron aerospace education officer. The launch pad and ignition systems were provided and coordinated by SPAAR.

SPAAR is a member of the

National Association of Rocketry, Section 503. SPAAR is based in Lancaster County and holds monthly sport launches and meetings in and around the Lancaster area. Membership is open to all persons with an interest in rocketry. For more information, visit www.spaar.org.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets at 7 p.m. each Monday, except holidays, in the Venture Jets hangar, which is located at Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome.

The Civil Air Patrol is the all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary. For more information, visit www.GoCivilAir Patrol.com or www.CAP.news. Details about the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 are available at www.JesseJones.cap.gov and by searching for “Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304” on Facebook.

KPB Litter Summit Held In Lancaster

Stakeholders in the fight against litter convened on Nov. 1 and 2 for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful’s (KPB) 2022 Litter Summit hosted by the city of Lancaster. The summit was held in coordination with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP) and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

The event began with a walking tour of Lancaster’s sustainable community, including two projects funded by Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, the Tiny Cans Project and Lancaster Compost Bin Co-op Expansion project. The 35th annual Crispus Attucks Community Center MLK Breakfast will be held from 7 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 16, returning to an in-person gathering at Millersville University with the addition of a livestream option. The event will be held at Marauder Courts at the Student Memorial Center on Shenks Lane. The event’s master of ceremonies will be Jeremy Jenkins from WGALTV. Pedro Rivera, president of Thaddeus Stevens College, is this year’s honorary event chair.

The event is a time for the community to come together, to foster relationships, to dialogue around the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., and to confront issues of inequity and injustice. This event, the center’s largest fundraiser, annually raises $100,000 - nearly one-third of

the center’s yearly budget.

Marc Lamont Hill, who previously spoke at the 2018 MLK Breakfast, will present “And How Are the Children … Now?” “And how are the children?” is a traditional greeting passed amongst the Masai in Kenya. The greeting acknowledges the high value of children and their well-being, and it acts as a measure of how the community and society is faring. The goal is to always be able to answer the greeting with “All the children are well.” Hill will speak about how people can collectively work to build a better community and world, one where they can say, “All the children are well.”

A Philadelphia native, Hill is currently the host of BET News and a political contributor for CNN. He has received numerous awards from the National Association of Black

Journalists, GLAAD, and the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences. He is the Steve Charles Professor of Media, Cities, and Solutions at Temple University. Prior to that, he held positions at Columbia University and Morehouse College. He is a founding board member of the nonprofit organization My5th, as well as a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. He received his doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania, and he is the author or coauthor of several books.

New this year, three ticket options will be available in the spirit of access and inclusion. These ticket options are an in-person ticket, a discounted livestream ticket,

and a pay-what-you-will inperson ticket.

To purchase tickets, visit www.caplanc.org/MLK or contact Kristy Aurand at kaurand@caplanc.org or 717299-7388, ext. 3032. Sponsorships are also available; for details, contact Aurand.

LMS Sells Former New Danville Campus

Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) sold its former New Danville Campus property located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, to Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning on Oct. 21. LMS unified all students from the former Locust Grove and New Danville campuses on the Lincoln Highway campus for the 2022-23 school year, starting in August.

The mission of LMS is to provide a Christ-centered, high quality education for prekindergarten through 12th-grade students in a diverse community that nurtures them to become creative and innovative learners who are prepared for college, a career, and life and are empowered to change the world through Christ-like love, peacemaking, and service.

LMS’ unification has allowed the school to update and expand its facilities and to hone in on key curriculum priorities of faith formation, fine arts, STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math), outdoor learning, and world languages. It has also allowed for collaborative learning opportunities across grade levels with the goal of fully utilizing and effectively stewarding the resources of its 95-acre Lincoln Highway campus.

The upgrades to the campus are intended to help the school serve the needs of students at every age and provide

new spaces such as a new elementary MakerSpace and art room, new high school science labs, new media centers, and classroom upgrades, which are designed to support new curriculum initiatives to help students grow in their understanding of the world and discover their purpose in it.

The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are subsidiaries of Milton Hershey School. The Catherine Hershey Schools for Early Learning are for children from birth to age 5 and provide weekday care and education for early childhood learning. Their program covers all the costs for those who qualify.

A contemporary family service will begin at 5 p.m., and a traditional candlelight service will take place at 7 p.m. Services will also be held on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25, at 10 a.m. and on New Year’s Day, Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, at 10 a.m. The church can be reached at 717-738-2465.

Lyon Serves In Florida

The group was sponsored by Cedarville University’s global outreach office, which provided the group with universityowned vans and funding for gas and food. The group connected with human aid organization Samaritan’s Purse to organize its service efforts.
