A Chance To Meet Mod Betty By Ann Mead Ash

“I’ve been following (Mod Betty’s) adventures online for a year or two and really like what she does,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. When Van Brookhoven learned that Betty, whose real name is Beth Lennon, was available to speak in Lititz, he jumped at the opportunity to schedule her. Mod Betty will speak and sign books at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, courtesy of the Lititz Historical Foundation, on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at 1:30 p.m. The presentation, dubbed “Must-See Roadside Attractions of Central PA,” will be free, and the public is invited to attend. Lennon is known as the creator of the Retro Roadmap, an online resource that spotlights what Lennon calls “cool

vintage places, good eats, and retro fun.” “I think her upcoming presentation in January is a perfect fit for our annual lecture series,” said Van Brookhoven. “We strive to select speakers that focus on area history or historic preservation, (and) Mod Betty has done a great job in bringing to light many cherished American treasures that have stood the test of time.” Van Brookhoven noted that those treasures include places such as classic diners, drive-in theaters, and quirky roadside attractions. Lennon travels the United States, visiting such attractions and businesses. Along the way, she writes about her travels and gives presentations as Mod Betty. She specifically seeks out locations that have retained their vintage charm, and then she shares what she has discovered with readers and social See Mod Betty pg 3

“We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. The facility was created by renovating 9,000 square feet of warehouse space into a comfortable, attractive place where individuals may receive immediate care, shelter, and the opportunity for a better life. “Several years ago, (we looked at how to) align our core values and what we believe God’s heart is for our guests and our facilities,” Burkholder continued, See Water Street pg 5
