Community. Collaboration. Conference.
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Lancasterresidents Leslie Bustard of Square Halo Books looks toward the second “Ordinary Saints - Creativity, Collaboration, and Community” conference with a passion for giving attendees a chance to learn and be challenged. “I love to bring people together to offer each other goodness and beauty and an enjoyable experience,” said Leslie. “I also love to give artmakers and teachers a chance to share their expertise so they can give (to others).”
This year’s conference will once again be held at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster, with registration starting at noon on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023. The conference will run into Friday evening and resume on Saturday, Feb. 18, ending at about 10 p.m. Poet Malcolm Guite, author of “Lifting the Veil,” will be the keynote speaker. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at www.squarehalobooks.com/ conferences#/2023-conference. Organizers anticipate that tickets will be available through the end of January. This year’s conference celebrates the 25th anniversary of Square Halo Books, a publishing house Leslie was involved in founding along with her husband, Ned, and Alan and Diane Bauer, who are located in Baltimore. All this year’s speakers have written for Square Halo, which focuses on “publishing works that present contextually sensitive biblical studies … with the goal of providing materials for encouraging and equipping the saints.” “We are all about giving a

Empty Bowls Event Aids Food Bank
The Lititz Empty Bowls event recently raised almost $13,000 to help fight hunger in the community, with the proceeds going to the Lititz Warwick Community Chest Food Bank. Around 350 area residents attended the Nov. 6
dinner held at Rock Lititz, sampling soups, breads and desserts prepared and donated by local restaurants.
Participants ate from bowls that were created and donated by local artists and students, and attendees took home their bowls at the end of the event. They also bid on silent auction items donated by local businesses and residents and listened to live music.
St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lititz first hosted the event in 2017, raising nearly $25,000 for local groups that fight hunger over three years, before the event went on hiatus for two years during the pandemic. The event is part of an international grassroots effort called the Empty Bowls Project, begun in 1990 as an art class project at a Michigan high school.
Landis Valley Posts Activities
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, will host a Winter Holiday Day Camp on Wednesday, Dec. 28, and Thursday, Dec. 29. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon both days and is open to children ages 5 to 11. Campers will explore both the holiday and winter season through literature and enjoy crafts, games, and snacks based on both old and new children’s books.
platform to people who don’t have one,” said Leslie. The book “Ordinary Saints: Living Everyday Life to the Glory of God” was published in celebration of Square Halo’s anniversary.
This year, special Friday afternoon activities have been added to the event at no charge. Presentations will be made by Tom Becker of the Row House forum and author Lisa Smith, a songwriters circle will be held with Matt Wheeler, and Friday night’s featured speaker will be art historian Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt.
On Saturday, a number of speakers will be featured. “The author Sean Smucker and Christie Purifoy will be with us,” said Leslie, who added that there will be an emphasis on speakers from the surrounding area. “Christine Perrin, a professor at Messiah University, will speak (along with) Dan Spanjer, a historian, who is now principal at Veritas Academy,”
she added. Lancaster Bible College professor Shanika Churchville will speak on “Ordinary Scholars: Justice in the Writing Classroom.” Other activities will include a round table reading of “Babette’s Feast” led by theater director Bonnie Bosso, a tea and poetry reading, a pop-up printing session, and a pub night.
Entertainment will be featured as well. “Our concert (artist) is a band called The Arcadian Wild, and they are a bluegrass band,” Leslie noted. “We feed people breakfast and lunch and a lot of snacks from local places,” she added.
Following the difficulties of COVID-19 restrictions the last few years, Leslie hopes to see attendees have a chance to gather and experience joy. “My goal is that people are refreshed,” she said. “I want to offer a gift. I envision us bringing people together looking at all of life before God and how it can be glorifying.”

whole theme of forgiveness is one of the biggest things in a marriage relationship.” With a chuckle, he added, “Keep forgiving and give flowers.”
Nelson and Sarah will sing and share their advice at the eighth annual Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) Valentine Banquet to be held at Faith Mennonite High School, 5085 Woodland Drive, Kinzers, on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2023. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a fellowship meal, catered by Shady Maple, will begin at 6:30 p.m. RTCM is an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or have developed other kinds of addictions.
Gospel Express has focused on prison services and crusades, evangelism, revival meetings, discipleship materials, and more in the United States and Canada, as well as internationally. Nelson and Sarah and their five children
traveled and lived for many years in a 40-foot bus. “How do you keep a marriage alive on and off the road?” asked Nelson. “You are doing marriage living in a glass house, which means you’re visible to everybody and you are under the microscope.” Nelson and Sarah have negotiated the years successfully, bringing their adult children and now grandchildren into the ministry. “We have been able to minister three generationally f or the first time stateside and internationally,” said Nelson. “That has been a dream.”
Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of RTCM, noted that the Coblentz team is a good fit for the banquet because of the couple’s devotion to each other and experience with prison ministry. “(Gospel Express) helps people in prison, and a lot of people in prison suffer from trauma and addiction,” said Santiago, who added that the organization evangelizes and disciples inmates in the U.S. and Canada. “We are trying to evangelize and disciple broken people,” explained Santiago.
Currently, RTCM is graduating about a dozen students a year and mounting a capital campaign with the goal of purchasing the former Strasburg Elementary School. “The old elementary school building would be a good fit for us, and it would allow us to expand and add a second phase to the program,” said Santiago. Goals for the second phase, which would offer 12 beds, are to provide rooms students could rent while working locally. RTCM would continue to provide meals, transportation, and a supportive
environment. “We could house 40 students and up to 10 live-in staff members,” said Santiago, who noted that the goal is to raise $1.3 million to purchase the building and a total of $1.6 million with renovations included.
Seating at the banquet will be limited. Table sponsorships are available. Readers who would like to purchase tickets or sponsor a table may call or text 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org. Tickets may also be purchased at www.restart ministry.org/events.
Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host its Lantern Tours daily from Tuesday to Friday, Dec. 27 through 30. Tours will start every 30 minutes begin-
ning at 6 p.m., with the last tour at 8:30 p.m.
The Student Historians, high school volunteers, will play the parts in a retelling of the true story of a Ephrata
Sister and her intended marriage to an indentured servant working for Brothers. Surviving records suggest the events surrounding the marriage took place about 1750. Preparations for the wedding in this telling will require creating Fraktur artwork, tailoring a suit for the groom, and making a cake. The fictional Frau Fahnestock will lend her talents in planning.
Space is limited, and tickets must be purchased in advance by calling 717-733-6600 or visiting https://bit.ly/3tSAzER. Discounts are available for seniors age 65 and up and for students ages 6 to 17. Admission is free for children age 5 and under. A discount is available for members of the Ephrata Cloister Associates, but no other discount passes will be accepted.

“I learned about people in government-funded or Medicaid-funded facilities who don’t have the money for nightgowns, or they don’t have friends or relatives to give them to them,” Angie recalled. “My mom was a fashion diva. She really wanted to look nice. A nightgown is a way someone can feel special and feel beautiful. I started thinking, ‘Maybe we could help people out.’”
In June of 2021, before Sharon passed away, Angie and Bob created Nanny’s Nighties, using the nickname Sharon’s grandchildren gave her. Gathering financial donations from friends and family, Angie and Bob shopped for high-quality nightgowns and delivered 80 in December of 2021. The gifts were so wellreceived, the pair decided to repeat the distribution to more women this past spring, to mark Sharon’s birthday in April. So far, they have distributed more than 300 nightgowns to women in long-term care facilities in Lancaster and York counties. Each woman also receives socks and personal care items, along with a card about the project that explains that the gift is in memory of Sharon.
Angie contacts the facilities and gets a list of each woman’s first name, nightgown size and favorite color. “ We custom shop for every person,” Angie said. “We ask things like if they want short sleeves or long sleeves, a nightgown or a two-piece set.” Angie also labels each nightgown with the woman’s name so it’s easy to keep track of in the facilities.
Nanny’s Nightgowns is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and Bob noted that the operation is a simple one. “We have no overhead,” he said. “Everything that is donated to us goes to the cause. We have no inventory. We buy the items specifically for the people who will be getting them.”
The organization relies on donations to provide the gifts, and Bob noted that anyone who gives $100 or more is invited to accompany the pair when they distribute the gift bags. “I think the visits are really eye opening for a lot of people,” he said.
Bob and Sharon were married for 53 years, and Bob remembers his wife as someone who loved the beach and enjoyed traveling, shopping, sewing and cooking. When Angie approached him about starting Nanny’s Nighties, he was all in. “It brings me such joy that we can do this,” he said.
For Angie, the project is about more than just helping others. “I started this nonprofit sort of for selfish reasons,” she stated. “I didn’t want a day to go by that I didn’t think of my mom. I always want to have some reason to say my mom’s name.”
For more information on Nanny’s Nighties or to make a donation, email angelakreider@aol.com.

Honored With Award
The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Pennsylvania recently named Tippetts/Weaver (T/Wa) Architects of Lancaster as the recipient of the 2022 Architecture Firm Award.
This is the first time since its inception in 2013 that the award has been given to a firm with a female founder. Wendy H. Tippetts is one of the two founding partners of T/Wa, and for more than 30 years she has led the design direction and culture of the firm.
The Architecture Firm (of the Year) Award recognizes a Pennsylvania firm whose passion and practice have produced notable architecture for at least a decade. Deserving firms have demonstrated excellence in design and leadership through any combination of the following criteria: the breadth and/or depth of their portfolio, a healthy firm culture, influence on the practice of architecture and exemplary outcomes for clients and/or society.
T/Wa was chosen from a pool of four nominees submitted to the committee by the nearly 3,000 members of AIA Pennsylvania. T/Wa is not only the first firm from central Pennsylvania to have been chosen for the award, but also the smallest.
Working in the small cities, towns and rural places of central Pennsylvania, T/Wa mixes a modern aesthetic with an historical context.
The firm’s projects include the Fulton Theatre expansion and Actor’s Housing; the Lancaster Science Factory; the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design; Lancaster Conservancy in Lancaster; Historic Fairmount affordable housing; Keystone Kidspace; St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in York; Newville Town Center mixed-use housing/commercial in Newville; Bucknell University; Barnes & Noble Bookstore in Lewisburg; and numerous residences, including new construction, renovation and adaptive reuse across the area.
In its 35-year history, T/Wa has been recognized with more than 50 awards, including design awards from the Central Pennsylvania AIA
Chapter and from 10,000 Friends of Pennsylvania, multiple annual awards from Preservation Pennsylvania for historic and adaptive reuse projects and many awards from the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County, Historic Trust of Cumberland County and Historic York, among others.
The firm of 10 includes six registered architects. It has pursued projects to address issues of inequity, including affordable housing, public access to health care and minoritybased community enterprises. In
the last five years, $300,000 of inkind services have been donated to nonprofits.
The team members participate in volunteer activities and events, assist local nonprofits and serve on boards and committees. In addition, T/Wa members are active in the Central Pennsylvania AIA Chapter, including two team members who have served as president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter Board of Directors.
For more information about T/Wa, visit www.tippettsweaver.com.
