WhenDeb Kline-Smith, who was a secondary music teacher with Warwick School District, retired last spring after 35 years with the district, a number of her past students gathered for the spring concert to give her a musical send-off. Following the concert, several suggested she form a community choir including alumni and friends.
Kline-Smith took the suggestion seriously, and the result is the Lititz Area Community Choir, under her direction, and accompanied by Keith Reifsnyder. The choir will hold its inaugural concert on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 7 p.m. at the Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), 201 Market St., Lititz. The event will include songs by members of the Warwick Alumni and Friends, along with featured duets and soloists. Kline-Smith has invited some of her private vocal students to take part as well.
Titled “Rejoice in the Thrill of
Hope - A Holiday Musicale,” the approximately 40-minute presentation will begin with the choir presenting “Carol of the Bells,” which Kline-Smith called “a traditional and well-loved a capella piece.” The choir will then sing a setting of the
poem “Stars I Shall Find” by Sara Teasdale. “That’s a popular lyric right now, and there are several versions of the song available,” said Kline-Smith. Brandy Jenkins will solo on “Mary, Did You Know?” and AJ Germaine and Lauren Epps will
sing “The Christmas Song” as a duet. Kline-Smith mentioned that both are University of Pittsburgh students who sing in the Heinz Chapel Choir. The quartet that performed in the Warwick High School (WHS) spring production of “The
Music Man” will sing “Silent Night” in a four-part arrangement, and Madison Felpel, voice performance major at Mansfield University, will sing “Rejoice Greatly.” The choir will complete the concert with “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

Terry Shamberger, one of the founders of Encounter Ministries, recently shared some sobering statistics. “Lancaster County was thought of as the Bible Belt in Pennsylvania,” said Terry. “Right now, if you take a look at the population in Lancaster County, (about) 51% of those people don’t walk with the Lord … don’t know Him.” With the population at more than 500,000, Terry estimated that number at about 250,000. “and we have churches on every corner,” he noted. for the census that was decreed by Caesar Augustus. The soldier will give visitors a booklet with the Christmas story, so people can follow along through the drive. Stations will include shepherds in the field watching their flocks and angels giving glory to God. Before guests arrive at the Nativity scene, the church will offer a complete takeout dinner featuring ham, a baked
potato, green beans and a dessert. The final scene will depict the three wise men bringing gifts to the baby Jesus.
“This event has been wonderfully received in the past,” said Steph Heisey, one of the organizers. “We’ve served up to 300 or 400 people.”
Beverly Snavely, who is also helping to organize the event, noted that church members
portray the characters in the various scenes, complete with costumes, and that live animals are featured as well. “It’s really something to see,” she said.
Heisey stated that not only does the Drive to Bethlehem offer a free meal, but it also provides sustenance for the soul. “It’s about getting to see the Christmas story come to life and under-
stand the true meaning of Christmas,” she said. “It’s just a neat time for families to be together.”
Reservations are required for the ham dinner and may be made by calling 717-6654499. The reservation deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 14. Anyone who wants to experience the Drive to Bethlehem without the meal may just show up on Dec. 17.
Outdoor Holiday Decorating Tips Offered
The holiday season is here, but home and business owners still have time to plan and execute an outdoor lighting display. According to Neil Brenneman of Christmas Decor of Lancaster, a franchise member of the Christmas Decor net-
work, the key to deocorating is having a plan. To create a plan that is right for local homeowners or businesses within a budget, he offered several pointers.
Start by finding a decor focal point. Identify the property’s most attractive features - a porch, the front door, some shrubs or a perfect tree - and focus attention there with garlands, greenery and lights.
Then complete the look
by enhancing other areas of the property. Outline windows or rooflines with lights or tuck hints of color into the landscape to complement the focal point design.
Brenneman recommended keeping the decor simple and knowing when to stop decorating. Too many themes and colors will detract from the focal point. He noted that a clean, uncluttered display is more
attractive, safer and more cost-effective.
Members of the Christmas Decor Franchise Network have been decorating homes and businesses since 1986 and now create outdoor holiday displays in more than 350 markets in 49 states and Canada each holiday season. For more information about Christmas Decor, contact Brenneman at 717318-1941 or christmasdecor oflancaster@gmail.com, or visit www.christmasdecor.net.
Public Invited To Christmas Light Show
The Christmas Spirit Light Show, a light display that residents of Lancaster and surrounding counties can enjoy from the comfort of their vehicles, opened on Nov. 25 at the Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster.
Visitors to the light show will journey through a 1mile track surrounded by hundreds of thousands of color-changing lights, animated and dancing in harmony to Christmas classics.
The show will run through Saturday, Dec. 31. It is open on Sundays through Thursdays from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m.
Guests can enter the light show on Prince Street through the south entrance into the stadium. The show takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes to drive through, and food and beverage items along with holiday merchandise will be available for purchase at the
entrance to the show.
Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Christmas Spirit Light Show is given to a different nonprofit organization. This year, the selected charity is Power Packs Projects, an organization whose mission is to fight hunger among students across Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

A Nativity scene will be featured at the Drive to Bethlehem. The Drive to Bethlehem will showcase shepherds and their sheep.
In response, Terry has joined with four others - Ernie Simmons, Ron Steffy, Kevin Semrau, and Terry’s son, Steve - to form Encounter Ministries. The organization’s mission is to use events, an area where Terry and Simmons have extensive experience, to reach people with the goal of “encountering” God. However, the ministry does not plan to stop with just an introduction. As the ministry casts nets, the focus will be on more than simply catch and release. “It’s not about making converts,” said Terry. “It’s about making disciples.”
Encounter has its roots in a Bible study the men started attending each Tuesday
morning a dozen years ago.
“Most of us knew each other from that (study),” said Terry, who added that the men attend different churches.
“We got to talking that we should be doing more.” Terry noted that the Lord revealed to him that worship could be used as a weapon in the battle, backing it up with Scripture from Second Chronicles 20, where Jehoshaphat was surrounded and found victory by going to the top of a mountain to worship.
Presently, Encounter holds a Bible study each Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lititz City Gate location, 101 N. Broad St., Lititz. On Friday nights, Encounter holds a cof-
Rizzetta’s Tones Sets Concert
The Celtic and folk band Rizzetta’s Tones will perform at Zion Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 3 p.m. This event is part of the Music at Zion concert series and will be a return performance of Rizzetta’s Tones.
The group performs music from Ireland, Scotland, the United States and many other countries. Their main instruments include hammered dul-
cimers, silver flute, high and low whistles and guitars. All group members take turns on vocals. A number of Christmas selections will be included in the upcoming concert.
There is no admission fee for the concert, and it is open to the public. A freewill offering will be accepted in support of future concerts in the series.

fee house with live music from 6 to 8 p.m. at City Gate. However, the ministry has set its sights on a large worship event, hopefully to be held in the near future. “We’re planning probably sometime in late spring or early summer … to do a big prayer and praise event here in Lancaster County,” said Terry, who added the group would like to bring in a worship leader to attract attendees and partnerships with other ministries.
Working in unity with other churches and ministries is an important concept for the founders of Encounter. “We want to work with everybody,” explained Terry. “We would like to partner with
every church that the Lord is willing to (bring us) and to fill those churches up with people.” Terry said the idea is not to found a new church, but rather to create a “united body of Christ to bring in a great harvest.”
Terry noted that he believes the ministry can accomplish all its goals by organizing worship events. “What better, easier way to get churches to be able to work together than through worship?” he asked.

and “O Holy Night.” “All the music deals with rejoicing about the holiday season,” said Kline-Smith of the selections. “I picked music that was not over-the-top difficult but offered a challenge and variety. So there is something for everyone.”
Kline-Smith said she feels blessed to have Reifsnyder, a WHS graduate whom she called “an outstanding musician,” taking part. Kathy Felpel, who filled various roles helping Kline-Smith with high school musicals over the years, is serving as administrative assistant.
No admission will be charged to the concert, but a freewill offering will be received to help defray choir expenses.
A spring concert is in the planning stages, and KlineSmith would like to hear more voices in the choir by then. “Hopefully, this will stir some others in the community to think about becoming members,” she said. The choir practices for about 90 minutes each Thursday evening at 7 p.m. at LUMC. Individuals who wish to become part of the group may email d.a.klinesmith@gmail.com.

created by Chelsea Clinton. Amid resistance, Maathai planted millions of trees that changed the landscape of Kenya and the world. She founded the Green Belt Movement and mobilized friends, family, and even strangers to help her plant trees and respect the environment.

Christmas Bird Count Announced
Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders can help, including backyard bird watchers. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy.
The Lancaster County Bird Club will offer several oppor-
tunities to participate in the count. Interested persons will be assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders should register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle and to receive instructions.
On Saturday, Dec. 17, a bird count will be held in Lititz. For details, contact Ted Nichols at 717-856-3851 or tanicholsii@gmail.com.
On Sunday, Dec. 18, a bird count will take place in southern Lancaster County. For details, contact Derek Stoner at 484-723-3348 or derekstoner@hotmail.com.
The Christmas Bird Count for Kids will be held on Saturday, Dec. 31, in collaboration with the Lancaster County Parks Department in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. It is designed to teach children about birding and volunteering as a citizen scientist. All children are required to register with the Lancaster County Parks Department by calling 717295-2055 and must be accompanied by an adult. Adults without children are welcome to participate in this count as well. For more details, contact John Lahr at 717-284-3497 or john lahr324@gmail.com.

Serving Seniors Christmas Dinner
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“When I see someone in need, I help them,” said Helen Bechtold. And for more than 30 years, Bechtold has been doing just that by providing a free Christmas meal to seniors. Bechtold and Sis Luzader are known as the “Columbia Christmas Ladies.”
They will once again offer the meal on Christmas Day, Sunday, Dec. 25. It will be available for pickup only at the Hambones Social Club of the Columbia Borough Fire Department, 726 Manor St., from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
The meal will include turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, a vegetable, a roll and butter, cranberry sauce and a dessert. It is available to anyone age 55 or older, regardless of income. “It’s for anyone who might be alone on Christmas or who doesn’t have anyone to celebrate with,” Bechtold said. “Christmas is such an important holiday to seniors. I think it’s when they miss their family and friends the most. Rather than sitting at home alone, they can come out and get a meal and know someone is thinking of them.”
Bechtold began serving the meal in the 1990s, when she took over as director of the Columbia Senior Center. “I was a little upset when I
realized I was asked to give up my Christmas Day to do this, but I soon found I really enjoyed it,” she said.
“When I see the seniors smile, it makes me happy.”
She noted that the giveaway is a community effort, and she emphasized that help is especially needed this year. Each senior not only takes home a meal but also receives a bag of grocery items and small treats such as cookies or candy.
“The cost of everything has gone up, so we really need donations,” Bechtold said.
The Columbia Lions Club supports the project, and Bechtold receives discount grocery items from Blessings of Hope, but she said she’d gladly accept donations from individuals as well. Anything that is left over from the meal is donated to the Veterans Affairs hospital and personal care homes in the area.
Bechtold said she hopes to return to in-person dining next year, and she noted that the meal has never been canceled, even during the height of the pandemic. “We get people from all over Lancaster County and York, and we’ve even had people come from out of state,” she said.
“If a senior needs or wants a meal for Christmas, they can get one.”
Providing the meal also requires help from many volunteers, Bechtold remarked, noting that helpers include members of the Donegal High School wrestling team, who set up and assemble goodie bags on Christmas Eve. A core group of about a dozen people help with the meal, some of whom have volunteered since the beginning, Bechtold said.
Meals will be available by reservation only. To reserve a meal, call Bechtold at 717397-2267 or Luzader at 717-684-0128 by Friday, Dec. 16.
Student Presentation Highlights Saints
On Nov. 1, fourth-grade students at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School in Ephrata remembered the saints who have gone before with a special presentation to school community and families. Students, under the direction of teacher Jennifer Dodson, each researched the life of a saint. Students then dressed in costume and told the story of that saint’s life to their schoolmates. Their presentations included facts about the saints and offered insight into the lives of these people who dedicated their lives to the teachings of Jesus Christ. Some of the holy
men and women chosen by students this year included St. Anthony of Padua, St. Cecilia, St. George, and St. Lucy.
OMPH School welcomes children from local Catholic churches, as well as interested members of the general
community. It is accredited through the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Elementary Schools. For more information, call 717-7382414 or visit www.omph school.com.

WYPA consists of young musicians preparing upper-level classical music for public performances. The group meets once each month, three times in the fall, and three times in the spring, with recitals in the winter, spring and summer.
The upcoming concert will include music by Bach, Mozart, Debussy, Brahms, Chopin, Grieg and others. Performers will present solos on the piano, violin or flute. The student participants are Jonah Ahlers, Brian Bogle, Holly Bogle, Peter Hasse, Kaleb Lambert, Candace Mbugua,
Marty Raine, Sean Skinner, Christian Wienckoski, Matthew Yang and Emma Zdrojewski.
