Music makes everything better, even the most joyous, most wonderful, most blessed time of the year. The Lititz Area Community Choir Warwick Alumni and Friends will present its second Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 7 p.m. at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave.,

said Kline-Smith. “The concert deals with the birth of baby Jesus. It starts with the thought of who’s coming. We end with a final piece where He’s been born, and we are led to the light of baby Jesus. All the music leads up to what led us to baby Jesus.” The Lititz Area Community Choir Warwick Alumni and Friends’ 90 members have been rehearsing for the concert every Thursday at Brunnerville United Methodist Church since September. Last year’s holiday concert, “The Thrill of Hope,” served as the group’s inaugural performance. “You get feedback from an audience,” Kline-Smith said of live performances. “You get applause, you see the looks on people’s faces and sometimes you even get a standing ovation. The feeling is difficult to put into words. It’s every exhilarating. It’s easier to get excited about the music, and it makes you perform even better.” While the members of the Lititz Area Community Choir are certainly dedicated to the craft, their collective commitment is not without its rewards.

“Our members are there every week,” said Kline-Smith. “Many I have known for many years, and their passion for singing has continued to grow. They really enjoy being there and it’s a learning experience, just how to use their voices. My expectations have always been very high, and they seem to have bought into it. Also, there are friendships being rekindled and some individuals getting to know new people.” The Lititz Area Community Choir has come a long way in a short period of time. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the group was formed in September of 2022 by former students of Kline-Smith who weren’t ready to relinquish their passion for singing. “I’m pretty pleased with our progress,” said Kline-Smith. “These are all people who enjoyed being in concert choir or college choirs. It allows them to continue to use their talents. We’re performing for the community. We want people to support our choir. I think they will have a very nice lead into preparing for the holidays. This will set the tone.”

is made up of 39 girls in fourth to 12th grades from the Warwick, Manheim Township and Manheim Central school districts, as well as Lancaster Country Day School. They have been practicing for the show on every Saturday since September, with some rehearsals lasting up to five hours. “They’re my dance daughters,” said Kalinowski. “They’re incredible people. The hearts they have are indicative of much older people.” Last year, CoJoMotion Dance Company’s holiday performance raised $40,000 for the Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley Make-A-Wish Foundation. A similar total from this season’s 19th overall performance would push the dance company’s total contribution to MakeA-Wish past the $500,000 mark. “We’re hoping this is the year it crosses the $500,000 mark,” said Kalinowski. “We talk about this a lot. We want our kids to understand that we’re doing God’s work. When all these people come together and each one does their part, miracles can happen. Everyone’s working for the same common good. Our students are so much of a family, at this time of year in particular.” With the money that CoJoMotion has raised over the years, over 50 children and their families have been helped by Make-A-Wish.

There will be live music, games, prizes, food including cookies, crafts, gifts, decorations, a model train display, story time, Christmas trivia, a worship area, a gift room where kids can shop for presents for adults and a live Nativity scene. Everyone is invited, and everything is free. “Just like Christ’s love and salvation is free,” said Bergman. “It’s our church’s way of inviting everyone to our house for Christmas. The church is always so beautiful, and it’s tastefully decorated. It takes a lot of hearts, and the hearts are so giving and so many people are willing to help.” Because of the pandemic, this season will mark the first time in four years that Simply Christmas will be held indoors at LUMC. The last time it

was held inside, the event drew 850 people. “I don’t know of any other organizations or churches who hold an event like this,” said Bergman. “It’s unique because it’s God-inspired. There is a lot of work involved, but it’s stress free. It’s got God’s hands all over it.” Simply Christmas is not the only time LUMC reaches out to the community. The church, which hosts its own clothing bank, also conducts a community Trunk or Treat event at Halloween and an Easter egg hunt in the spring. “Our church is known to be community oriented,” said Bergman. “We’re a congregation and we’re also a family in Christ. We invite because we’re a living, friendly, giving church.” This Simply Christmas will be LUMC’s 12th. It started simply enough and has continued to gain

momentum ever since. “I was driving down Newport Road in 2012 and I saw our church in the middle of the community, and I felt a nudge,” said Bergman. “It was a Godinspired epiphany. I took it to our planning team, and we were all trying to find something different to do at Christmas. We discussed it and it

just started to fall into place. We brainstormed and this is what we came up with. We all worked together to put it out there.” “I really feel like God was asking me to do something,” Bergman continued. “I felt like there was something missing, like we’re missing the reason for the season.”

Old Zion Church sets carol sing

Old Zion Church will be decorated for the season in preparation for the annual carol sing.

Old Zion Church will hold its annual carol sing on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 2 and 4:30 p.m. The historic church will be lit by candles, and fresh greens will be hung. The carol sing will be led by local musicians Don and Peggy Grabowski along with members of their family. In addition to leading and accompanying the congregation in singing well-known carols, they will perform special Christmas music. The event offers an opportunity to experience the Christmas season of a bygone era. Old Zion Church was built in 1813 and has been

maintained close to its original state without modern conveniences of heat, electricity, or indoor plumbing. The carol sing is free to attend, but advance reservations are required, with a maximum of six tickets per request. Tickets may be obtained by sending a stamped, self-addressed envelope to Old Zion Church, P.O. Box 103, Lititz, PA 17543, or by emailing oldzionchurch@gmail.com. Attendees are advised to dress warmly and bring along a flashlight for reading the sheet music and navigating in and around the church.
