Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), 201 Market St., Lititz, will host its eighth annual Simply Christmas Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Simply Christmas is a simple, old-fashioned celebration of the birth of Christ that offers activities for young and old alike. “It’s a God-inspired evening meant to intentionally slow people down (so they might) enjoy the true spirit of Christmas and spend time with family and friends and new acquaintances,” said Simply Christmas coordinator Patti Bergman. “Sometimes we can get so caught up in all the details of Christmas, we
totally miss the love and joy of the season,” she noted. “Over the years, many families have shared that this special celebration has become an annual tradition.” Simply Christmas includes games, crafts, cookie decorating, and plenty of free food. Returning this year will be themed Christmas rooms with a decorated miniature Christmas Village, trains, and more. Children who visit often enjoy the special Gift of the Magi room, which provides them with a chance to pick out free gifts for parents or guardians. Free wrapping is offered. Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance and the organizer of “A Season for Wishes,” is getting prepared for the 15th annual “A Season for Wishes” event this year. “I am getting super excited for it,” said Kalinowski, whose past efforts have raised more than $330,000 to help grant nearly 50 wishes for area Make-A-Wish children. The Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, hosts a Scrabble club on the second Monday of the month at 1 p.m. and on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Participants may bring their own board and meet up for casual games. The game was invented during the Great Depression by Alfred Mosher Butts, an out-of-work architect, who wanted to provide everyone with a fun distraction. The club is free and open to the public. “I’ve known this house all of my life, and I’ve always wanted to live in it,” said Donna Hlavacek, referring to her home on East Ferdinand Street in Manheim. Faced in pink Indiana limestone, the mid-century Cape Cod was built in 1954 by Raymond Hollinger, the former owner of Hollinger’s Mill on South Oak Street, as a retirement residence for him and his wife. Donna grew up on South Oak Street and has fond memories of the house with the “stegosaurus wall” of stone alongside the driveway and walkway leading to the front entrance. The property will be one of nine featured on the annual Women’s Club of Manheim (WCM) Holiday Tour of Homes on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. “This is an iconic Manheim house, and depending on your age you’ll remember it as something different,” remarked Donna. “If you’re my age, it’s the Hollinger house. If you’re younger than me, it’s the Graybill house, and there were a few other owners in between there, too.” Reid and Inda Graybill, who founded Graybill’s Tool and Die Inc. in Manheim, were the property’s most recent residents prior to when Donna and her husband, Ken, purchased it in 2017. Ken passed away in April. Though apprehensive about being part of the holiday home tour, Donna agreed to feature her home when a friend suggested she do so in honor of Ken and his love for the holiday season. Her home’s sunroom will showcase a collection of memories - Disney ornaments on the Christmas tree and other things Ken had collected with his children and grandchildren. Another room features

Train Display from pg 1 The Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, will offer a model train display in the community room from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14, and from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 10, and Thursday, Dec. 12. Lavon Stauffer will return to set up his train display, along with fellow train enthusiast Greg Phillips. When Stauffer was a boy, his father sparked his interest in trains. As Stauffer got older, he began collecting model trains, and he and his father created an HO-scale train layout. Later when his own sons were young, he rekindled his interest by getting the trains out of storage. He started getting newer models. Stauffer and his sons built a layout together, and the collection grew. Today, they have a semi-permanent layout in their basement. Phillips is a retired astronomy educator at a Lebanon County
school. He also ran a model railroad club there for 28 years. Phillips collects Marx trains made by the Louis Marx Co. His trains operate on three-rail O-27 and O34 scale track. Later in life he developed an interest in smaller HO trains. Before moving to Lititz, Phillips lived in the Myerstown area and had a 12-by-38foot HO layout in his basement. Phillips is currently constructing a Marx three-rail layout in the basement of his home in Lititz. The display will be free and open to the public. Additionally, Dec. 7 and 14 will mark the library’s Holiday Happening with crafts to make and take and a children’s holiday-themed film that will be shown at times throughout the day. Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and age-related disabilities. Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the “S� Mall of Park City Center during all regular mall hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to provide coverage for all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours. Proceeds from the gift wrapping project will benefit United Disabilities Services Foundation, a Lancaster-based nonprofit

HANUKKAH This Jewish Man Antiochus Epiphanies was a descendant of a general in the army of Alexander the Great. He was the ruler of Syria in 164 BC. He tried to conquer Egypt, but Pharaoh sent him packing his bags for home. He was furious and tried to take his wrath out on Israel. He not only ordered a pig to be sacrificed on the altar in the Temple, but he also ordered local Levites to sacrifice pigs in their own town. In the town of Modin a Levite named Matthias refused to sacrifice a pig. He and his sons killed the Syrian captain and his soldiers. This started Israel’s successful three year rebellion against Syria. Israel was successful in their rebellion and the profaned Altar in the Temple was taken down and a new one was erected. There was only enough consecrated oil in the Temple to burn for one day. The Lord made that small amount of oil last for eight days, until the new consecrated oil was ready. It was decided that the victory and the miracle of the oil would be celebrated every year, as a testimony to the saving grace of our eternal Master and King. Jewish families light their Candelabra with the addition of one more candle each day until eight candles are lit. The candles are always lit with one special candle called the servant candle (Shamash). One hundred and sixty four years later, the most famous Jewish man that ever lived, stood in the Temple courts at the Feast of Dedication called Hanukkah. The people asked Him to tell them plainly, if He was the Messiah. He said “He and His Father are Oneâ€? (John 10:30). He was the Prophet that Moses spoke about in Deutueronomy. 18:15ff. Christmas At Cornwall Event Planned The Friends of Cornwall Iron Furnace will introduce a new Christmas at Cornwall event this year on Saturday, Dec. 7. The family-friendly day, set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., will highlight the Cornwall community. As in years past, Cornwall Manor will partner with the Friends group in providing access to its restored buildings, with tours available of the public areas of the 19-room Buckingham Mansion, the historic Sarah Coleman greenhouse, and the 1860s Paymaster’s Office, with a visit from Santa Claus as portrayed by Irvin Muritz. A model railroad display of the Cornwall area complete with scale models of the major build-
ings will be located in the stable. Additionally, the Cookies, Carols, Crafts, and More event will be held at Freeman Community Center in the morning and will include the singing of Christmas carols, the sale of homemade cookies and crafts, and holiday gift wrapping by donation. At the Cornwall Iron Furnace, horse-drawn wagon rides or a Cornwall Manor bus, if preferred, will take visitors along Boyd Street to the end of Minersvillage. A tour guide will point out the famous Cornwall mine as well as the furnace manager’s house, stable, abattoir, blacksmith and wagon shops, the miners’ boarding

house, Minersvillage store, and some of the older homes in the village. Visitors may also tour a private home, which will be decorated for Christmas. Michael Weber, a qualified geologist, will be on hand at the furnace site to talk about the various minerals that were found during the mining operation. The Belsnickel will be portryaed by Rick Brouse of East Petersburg, who has played the role at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum for many years. Historically, the furnace operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, irrespective of holidays. From 1829 to 1861, the furnace was likely in blast during Christmas every year except 1831. Guides will offer guided tours of the furnace throughout the day. Separate costs have been set for adults, for senior citizens and AAA members, and for youths ages 13 to 17. Children age 12 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets will be sold in advance and on the day of the event at the Cornwall Iron Furnace Visitor Center. Meetinghouse Sets Christmas Event The fourth annual Christmas at the Wenger Meetinghouse will be held at the 1871 Historic Wenger Meetinghouse, 16 Supervisors Drive, Jonestown, Lebanon County, on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. Attendees will get into the Christmas spirit with Christmas traditions from the past. Scripture and Christmas songs will be presented in both Pennsylvania German and English. Music will be provided by Die Schwadore Schalle (Swatara Sounds). The interior of the meetinghouse will be decorated for the Christmas season, and light refreshments will be served. There is no fee to attend; however, donations of any amount to help preserve the meetinghouse will be appreciated. An open house of the restored meetinghouse will be held at 2:30 p.m., a half-hour before the program begins.
The annual Christmas Tree Lighting Celebration in the historic square in Manheim will take place on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The rain date is Sunday, Dec. 8. The Manheim Lions Club has passed the coordinating of the event to Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, whose youth group, led by pastor Corby Burkholder, is decorating the tree. People of all ages may enjoy the evening filled with performances, caroling and an interactive Nativity photo station. Local performers will include Cricket’s Performing Arts and Balance Dance Studio. Food and
beverages will be available for purchase to support local organizations and businesses. Donations will be collected for the Manheim Central Food Pantry and Toys for Tots. Nonperishable food items or new, unwrapped toys can be brought to the event. For the finale of the evening, the winner of a “Flip the Switch” drawing will have the honor of lighting the tree. A large number of people have attended Journey to Bethlehem over the eight years it has been held. Fox noted that in spite of some inclement weather on two of the event nights last year, more than 2,000 people attended. More than 17,000 have participated since Woodcrest began holding the fundraiser. Some families have driven from as far as New Jersey and New York City to attend. Fox noted that although much of the script remains the same from year to year, each production
is a little different as cast members change. “It’s always interesting because the people who are involved in the production change, and they bring their own take on the story,” he said. “It’s interesting to see that each (actor or actress) brings (his or her) own unique flavor (to a role).” The cost to attend will be discounted for children ages 4 to 16. Children age 3 and under will be admitted for free. In addition, a family price will be available to members of an immediate family living in the same household. Reservations are available for groups of 15 or more. All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. Camps run during June, July, and August. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they
will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ Child in the manger. The path through Woodcrest will be lit by luminarias to guide guests on their way. One script change this year will have the visitors meeting up with security along the path. “Visitors will be confronted by a Roman guard, and they will be stopped by him,” said Fox. “There will be some drama there.” As in the past, visitors will begin the journey by registering

Holiday Happenings Set In Lititz Venture Lititz has announced several holiday happenings in the downtown in December. Meter parking in the downtown will be free through the first week of January. The Downtown Lititz Holiday Shopping Card kicked off on Nov. 8. Shoppers can have their card initialed for every $20 they spend; after they fill their card, they may enter it to win one of two baskets filled with more than $500 in Downtown Lititz goodies. Cards can be filled through Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, and they may be turned in 24/7 at the mailbox located in the

Linden Hall invites the community to the annual vespers service on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Moravian Church. The traditional Moravian music service will
include Christmas hymns, Bible verse readings, and a candlelight vigil. The Linden Hall choir, orchestra, and handbell choir have been preparing for the service. All are welcome, and no tickets are necessary. From 1746 to the 1970s, Sunday evening vespers was a weekly tradition for the entire Linden Hall community. Traditionally, the evening services would take place in the Mary Dixon Chapel and all students were required to attend, but often parents and friends joined from the community. the event, which will include a poinsettia sale, a bake sale, and a Chinese auction featuring a number of theme baskets, will benefit Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley to help grant the wishes of seriously ill children. Each year, Kalinowski considers ways to keep the program fresh. “This year, we will have a couple new numbers,” she said. “Every year, we try to change it a little, but still do a lot of the same favorites.” New numbers in this year’s show will include “Where Are You Christmas?” and “Hip-Hop Holidays.” Among the more than 20 dance numbers to be performed by nearly 40 dancers will be “Jingle Bell Rock,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and “Snow.” Other dance numbers that will be featured this year will include “Mele Kalikimaka,” “Trepak,” and “Hot Chocolate.” As in the past, “Mele Kalikimaka” will include a special appearance by some guest dancers. Both “Trepak” and “Hot Chocolate” will be tap numbers. Dance styles will include tap, jazz, modern, ballet, hiphop, and Rockette-style kicklines. Santa Claus will visit from 5 to 6 p.m., and Make-AWish family members will speak at the event. Interspersed between the dance numbers will be vocal performances by Cathy Cruz, Michelle McGovern, Amy Fennimore, and LaLaLuna, a women’s choir. Kalinowski has also lined up a local funnyman to take part this year. “We will have ‘Holiday Hilarity’ with comedian Jonathan Burns,” she said. The show is the secondlargest county contributor to Make-A-Wish, bested only by the Mother’s Day Truck Convoy. Kalinowski estimates that more than 130 dancers have taken part over the years the show has been produced. The Workshop for Young Performing Artists (WYPA) invites the public to its December concert. The event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m. at the Bachman Center, 633 Community Way, Lancaster, located on the property of Homestead Village. WYPA is one of the student organizations sponsored by the Musical Art Society and is made up of outstanding young classical musicians who are preparing for competitions, auditions, and other solo performances. The group meets monthly, sharing upperlevel historic repertoire, and presents public recitals in December, April, and June. Mentors are Margaret Marsch, Bonnie Witmer, and Dora Zlatkin. On Dec. 8, members will perform piano and violin works by Bach, Handel, Chopin, Debussy, and Khachaturian, as well as a piano concerto by Mozart. The program will also include siblings Faith, Charity, and Clayton Martin performing on harpsichord, harp, and cello. They will perform historic and Christmas music in period dress. The trio is also providing music at historic sites this Christmas season, including the Ephrata Cloister, Landis Valley Museum, and Pennsbury Manor. The concert is free and open to the public. The venue is handicapped-accessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.
