Patti Bergman, facilities and events manager at Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), still remembers well the day she received the vision for Simply Christmas. “I was driving on Newport Road, and I looked over, and I felt God right there,” said Patti, who saw LUMC and the surrounding houses of its neighbors. “God said, ‘Invite them,’” she recalled, noting that the idea was to simply celebrate the Savior in a world that has become so busy and commercialized. Patti realized that vision when LUMC launched the event shortly after in 2011.
The 2022 Simply Christmas will be held at LUMC, 201 Market St., Lititz, on Sunday, Dec. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. Originally held inside the church, the event has been celebrated drivethrough fashion since 2020, but Patti has plans to return to the full-blown festivities in 2023.

Behind the creativity in presenting the 2022 Journey to Bethlehem event at Woodcrest Retreat, is an enduring goal to keep the tale fresh, while acknowledging its unwavering truth. “It’s the Christmas story,” said Adam Fox, program director at Woodcrest. “It doesn’t change, but there are different ways to think it through.”

In 2020, Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance, scheduled “A Season for Wishes” as a virtual performance at Penn Cinema. Last year, the show was back live at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS). This year, Kalinowski would like to see the LMS Fine Arts Center packed. “It’s just one performance, so I am hoping we can play to a full house,” said Kalinowski.

A Night Of Christmas Fun
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The members of the program team at Ruhl’s Church are always looking for ways to connect with the community. Their brainstorming led to A Night of Christmas Fun, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
The evening will begin with Christmas carols and the reading of a short book telling the Christmas story. Each child who attends will be invited to decorate a premade gingerbread house, created from graham crackers. All decorations will be provided to take home a complete house.
A table will also be set up for children who finish early to color wooden Christmas ornaments or play games. The night will end with a treat of
milk and a Christmas cookie.
A Night of Christmas Fun is open to everyone, said Steph Heisey, who is organizing the event with Beverly Snavley. “It’s a family event,” she stated. “It’s something for families to do together. It’s bringing back old Christmas traditions and giving people the chance to spend time together at the holidays, doing something fun together.”
Ruhl’s Church regularly holds community events throughout the year, including dinners, music nights, a summer picnic and God’s Clothing Closet, a clothing giveaway.

from us, and this is a way we can answer that call.”
All of these events help the members of the congregation fulfill the church’s mission, said Snavely. “I think that’s what Jesus requires of us - to do for others, to help others and to share His love,” she stated. “That’s what He wants

The outdoor event consists of several stations. “You pull in and get a welcome bag and a craft,” noted Patti, who said that a drive-through food court, a cookie decorating station, temporary tattoos, and trivia with a pastor are all scheduled. “A wonderful small group will do the Nativity,” said Patti. The Gift of the Magi station will be the last stop. Patti reported that there will be a chance for children to choose gifts and that they will receive stickers. Gifts are divided and marked by age group and range from those designed for toddlers to adults. “In addition to the sta-
tions, we have people who roam and hand out little free gifts,” said Patti, who said that last year, attendees received commemorative magnets that read “Simply Christmas. Established in 2011.”
The first year it was held, Simply Christmas attracted about 100 neighbors. By the end of Simply Christmas 2021, 184 cars with 663 people had visited. From the beginning, the plan has been to reach out in a relatable way. “The point is to invite our neighbors in the community over to our house for an evening,” said Patti. “It’s a
tangible way to show them the love of Christ and His free gift.”
Since the beginning, Patti’s husband, Kevin, a long-time cancer survivor, helped her with the event, handling press releases and other duties. Patti called Kevin her “encourager.” “He was behind the scenes. He was always there to support and help,” she said. In 2022, Kevin was not feeling well when Simply Christmas was held, and Patti did not expect him to be present. “(Kevin) waited until I left to come here, and then he asked our oldest son to drive him through,” recalled Patti,
who was thrilled to see him there. Kevin succumbed to cancer in March, but Patti still feels his presence encouraging her. “I can hear Kevin saying, ‘Don’t quit this year just because I am not there,’” she said. “He was such a big part of this.”
Simply Christmas will be held rain or shine or snow. Attendees are asked to enter at the Market Street entrance closest to the Dean L. Saylor Park. Readers who would like more information may call the church office at 717-6262710. More information about the church may be found at www.lititzumc.org.
MCCL Sets Christmas Concert Series
The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) has announced its 2022 Christmas concert series.
Concerts will take place on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 2 p.m. at Historic St. Mary’s Catholic
Church, 119 S. Prince St., Lancaster; Sunday, Dec. 4, at 4 p.m. at Neffsville Mennonite Church, 2371 Lititz Pike, Lancaster; and Wednesday, Dec. 7, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 1801

Guests will experience the retelling of the birth of Jesus through song and Scripture. Several selections from Handel’s “Messiah,” including a congregational sing-along of the “Hallelujah” chorus, will be interspersed throughout a varied program of familiar favorites, multicultural songs, and bluegrass-infused selections from Tim Sharp’s Angel Band. Singers will share music in many languages, which they learned and practiced with native Spanish, French, Ukrainian, and S’gaw Karen speakers. Violin, banjo, guitar, bass, and percussion will round out the program.
MCCL’s mission is to train children and youths to glorify Jesus Christ through excellent choral singing. The 110-
voice choir includes the Carol Choir for children in second through fifth grades, Concert Choir for sixth- through eighth-graders, and Chamber Choir for students in ninth through 12th grades led by artistic director Rosemary Siegrist Blessing with directors Sarah Wingard and Galen Kauffman. MCCL is a community children’s choir program of Lancaster Mennonite School serving children and youths from Lancaster, Chester, York, and Berks counties.

The Heritage Chorale of Lancaster
A Season For Wishes
held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at LMS, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.
Doors will open at 5 p.m. This traditional holiday show benefits Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.
Along with a variety of musical numbers performed by members of the CoJoMotion Dance Company, the show will feature local singers Cathy Cruz, Tia Wells, Lisa McCoy, Kate Caplan, Amy Fennimore, Rachel Kalinowski, and Michelle McGovern. Prizes, giveaways, and opportunities to donate will be part of the event.
Styles for about 30 numbers will range from tap, jazz, and ballet to modern, lyrical, and musical theater. Rockette-style pieces will include “Jingle Bell Rock,” “Cool Yule,” “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” and “Parade of the Wooden Soldiers.” Pieces inspired by “The Nutcracker” will include “Waltz of the
Flowers” and “Arabian Dance.” Lyrical pieces will be set to carols such as “O Holy Night” and “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and fun dances will be performed to wellknown tunes of the season, such as “Santa Baby,” “My Only Wish (This Year),” and music from “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
Past shows have raised more than $30,000 each. Over the nearly two decades that the benefit has been held, the group has raised more than $420,000. Kalinowski is hoping to raise at least $30,000 this year to breach the $450,000 milestone.
More information may be found by searching Facebook for “CoJoMotion Dance Company” or “Lititz Academy of Dance.” Readers who have questions may email Cojo_Wish es@LititzAcademyofDance.com.
Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be purchased at www.lancastermennonite.org/ event-info-ticket-sales.

Included in the earnings
from this event were contributions from 140 golfing participants as well as the gold sponsors - Atwater Malik, Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster, and Lombardo’s Restaurant - the bronze sponsors, monetary and gift card contributors and contest participants.
