Twoyears ago, COVID-19 restrictions meant the Lititz Public Library posted a video of Santa reading “The Night Before Christmas” on its website. In 2021, children braved the cold to greet Santa on the library’s back patio, but for 2022, Santa is back and will return to spending some time with children in the warmth of the library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz.
A visit with Santa will be one of several events happening at the library during the holiday celebration. Activities for children and opportunities for area residents to give back in ways that offer warmth, food, and education to others are also planned.
On Saturday, Dec. 10, Santa will visit from 10 a.m. to noon, and he will read “The Night Before Christmas” at 11 a.m. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., children’s activities will include a Christmas movie, a makeand-take craft, and a train display in the community room. The same activities will be repeated on Saturday, Dec. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Mitten Tree, which has been
a fixture at Lancaster County libraries, provides items of warmth to both children and adults. According to Diane Guscott, community relations coordinator at the library, this year the collected items will be distributed through Community Action Project and other local organizations. The goal will be to provide new umbrellas, socks, mittens, hats, gloves, scarves, and earmuffs insizes for children and adults.
Santa is back and will return to spending some time with children in the warmth of the library.
Baby blankets and sweaters may be donated as well. Items may be brought in to decorate the library tree by Dec. 10. When the tree is full, items may be placed in the baskets beneath it. “I would say 80% of what we receive is handmade,” said Guscott, who noted that members of a knitting club that meets at the library bring items and encourage friends to do
so. “I think a lot of the residents of Luther Acres knit and bring things over,” said Guscott. “There are people who knit all year knowing they will bring it here.” Last year, nearly 900 items were donated.
Since 2020, the library has taken part in the Lititz Warwick Community Chest Christmas Basket Project, which provides holiday meals for local families. A Giving Tree, located in the front of the library, has removable leaves that name food items the library is collecting including cranberry sauce, stuffing, canned vegetables, canned pumpkin, and cocoa mix. Last year, a number of extra food items were donated to the Community Chest. Library public services coordinator Cathy Lenhart assembles the baskets to deliver to families. Gift cards, which the families may use to buy fresh produce and other items, are accepted as well. Food items and gift cards will be collected through Dec. 10.
The Gift-a-Book program, overseen by children’s librarian Karen Payonk, helps fulfill Payonk’s
wishlist for books for children and youths. A table near the front of the library offers the names of children’s materials that may be purchased to commemorate a designated person. Books for the
program may be purchased through Dec. 10.

Saturday, Nov. 5, was a beautiful fall day in Manheim. The sun shone in the parking lot at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on North Penryn Road, and the breeze brew subtly through the colored leaves. Inside, however, the fun was fierce and so was the competition. The 20 members of the Chuckie Magee flag football teams and half a dozen cheerleaders enjoyed the last game of the season. The league was created earlier this year for participants ages 21 to 40 with varying

abilities and disabilities. The Cowboys in blue and the Eagles in green lined up for play after play.
W hen the Eagles scored, a volunteer played “Fly Eagles Fly” and members of the Eagles team began to sing. Cowboys coach Randy Samuels quickly approached a reporter on the sidelines, saying, “You need to put this in this article, so everyone reads it. This song they are playing now is officially banned from this league.” Laughter ensued, and Rita Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, which is the parent organization of the league, said, “Randy is brutal. He is in everyone’s face. He is just so much fun, and everyone gives it right back to him.”
As Paskoff finished talking, Eagles team member JJ intercepted a football and ran the length of the gym for a touchdown. Cheers erupted. “That was great,” Paskoff told JJ. “Good for you!”
Following the final game, a banquet was held at the church. Awards, trophies, and medals were given out, and participants, parents, coaches and volunteers, including Randy’s wife, Doris, and Chuck and Bev Magee, parents of Chuckie, for whom the league is named, enjoyed pizza from Jersey Mike’s Subs and Rita’s Italian Ice. “The church has been wonderful - so supportive and helpful,” said Paskoff, who added that sponsors who have contributed to expenses include Costanzo Wealth Management, 4 Cole’s KIDS, Bomberger’s, Executive Printing, and Lanco Federal Credit Union.
The league has been so successful, the group is talking about organizing a similar pro-
gram around a different sport during the winter season from January to March, which will be followed in April by Challenge Baseball. “These (participants) are older than 21, so this was a nice way to segue into serving an older group, which is where we want to go,” explained Paskoff.
Aaron’s Acres will be taking part in the ExtraGive 2022 online fundraising event to be held on Friday, Nov. 18. On that day, representatives of
the organization will visit several county locations, including Grand Central Bagel from 7 to 10 a.m., Jersey Mike’s Subs at the Belmont Shoppes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Dale High Leadership Center from 3 to 6 p.m., and Tellus 360 from 2 to 7 p.m. Readers who wish to support the organization during the ExtraGive may visit www.extragive.org.

The evening event will include a dance party with a live DJ, dance and music performances by Cavod students, worship, and free food in the form of pizza, popcorn, cookies, and beverages. Door prize

The Red Rose Chorus will perform at Wheatland as part of the site’s Campus of History Cheer on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 5 to 7 p.m. The event will take place at LancasterHistory, 230 N. President Ave., Lancaster.
Men from the community are invited to join in the Red Rose Chorus’ performance.
They may rehearse with the chorus on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. until Nov. 29 at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. The Wheatland performance will consist of four songs, which participants may already know, and singers will be given sheet music and learning tracks.
Through The Eyes Of A Child
W hen Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service/public information officer with Pennsylvania State Police Troop J - Lancaster, organized the first Shop With a Cop, the idea was to foster good relationships between children and local law enforcement officers. Now, as she prepares to hold the third such event, Osborne has witnessed the results of her efforts. “You see a difference from the time a child is dropped off by a parent or guardian in the morning, when they may be unsure or nervous, to when the parents pick them up,” she said, noting when the children prepare to go home, they are often laughing and hugging their assigned cop. “In those couple hours, the bond that is made between the officer and the child is amazing,” said Osborne.
The third Shop With a Cop will be held at Lafayette Fire Company on Saturday, Dec. 3. Osborne hopes to pair at least 30 children in the countywide program with volunteer state police troopers, officers from East Lampeter Township
Police Department, and officers from the SPCA and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Osborne is specifically looking to include children who have been the victim of a crime or involved in another unfortunate circumstance where police contact would benefit them. Those who wish to nominate a child for the program may visit http://camp cadetoflancastercounty.com /shop-with-a-cop. Links to sponsor a child are located on that website as well. Nomination forms for children to participate must be completed by
Wednesday, Nov. 30.
The elementary-age children and officers whom Osborne has paired up will travel together to Kohl’s on Lincoln Highway to shop. Each child will receive a $150 gift card to Kohl’s, so students may shop for family members. Prepared with lists of possible gifts, the students and officers will shop and then returned to the station, where the officers will help wrap the gifts. Each student will also receive a bag lunch before being picked up.
Osborne has also created a
Luther Acres Sets Holiday Bazaar
Residents of Luther Acres, the Luthercare community in Lititz, have been working for months to prepare items for the upcoming holiday bazaar, which will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the community room of the Luther Acres Towne Center at 250 St. Luke Drive, Lititz. Shoppers will be able to pay for their purchases via cash, check, or credit card.
The event will support the Luthercare Resident Caring Fund.
The sale will feature artisan vendors selling a variety of items, including redware pottery and ornaments; handcrafted cards, wooden signs, and Christmas items; watercolor art; handwoven scarves and baby blankets; canned and pickled items, jams, jellies, and honey; and more. The bazaar will also feature knitted and crocheted items, woodworking pieces, and holiday crafts and cards that have been handmade by Luther Acres residents. There will also be an array of donated jewelry, attic treasure items, and Christmas decorations for sale, along with homemade baked goods and candy to purchase. Baked goods frequently sell out before the end of the bazaar, so customers are encouraged to buy early.
Additionally, there will be a giveaway drawing for a queensize, blue and white quilt, featuring a large star shape in blue in the center and small stars on the borders. Separate prices have been set for two tickets and for an arm’s length. The drawing will be
held at 3:30 p.m.
Attendees are also welcome to enjoy a pancake breakfast in Katy’s Grill, a campus restaurant in the Towne Center, from 8 to 10 a.m. The
“Troop J Lancaster Shop With a Cop” Facebook page, where she posts photos, updates, and other information about the event. “I receive a lot of feedback from parents and grandparents in the form of emails or Facebook messages,” she said, noting most of the correspondence expresses gratitude and shares that a child loved being part of the program. “It makes the kids feel empowered to provide gifts for their family members,” said Osborne. “You think it’s just for the children, but it benefits the whole family.”
breakfast will feature pancakes, sausage, coffee, and juice for a set fee, which may be paid with cash only. Proceeds will benefit the Luthercare Resident Caring Fund.

State Police To
Law Enforcement Training Program
BY FRANCINE FULTON
Taking part in scenarios like a traffic stop, learning about weapon safety and criminal procedure and participating in fitness training are just some of the activities that youths can experience at the Pennsylvania State Police Hill Impact Program. The free 14-week course, which is open to young men and women ages 15 through 18, will take place at the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, 175 Hersheypark Drive, Hershey, on Tuesdays from Jan. 17 through April 18, 2023, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
“(We want youths to) come through this program and to see what the Pennsylvania State Police department has to offer,” said Trooper Clint Long, program director. “They (may) gain a love for the career and want
to pursue that later in life. That is our goal.”
Students who register for the program will receive matching T-shirts and hats to wear during the classes, as well as water bottles. Each session will include physical training (PT), followed by a time of instruction and hands-on activities.
“We introduce them to paramilitary disciplinesmarching, standing at attention and saluting. We introduce them to physical fitness and we move into our law enforcement curriculum,” Long explained. “The first 30 minutes is a military drill and PT, and then there is an hour and a half of scenario-based training.”
Scenarios may include reenacting a traffic stop or responding to a mock call. “We make it fun and interactive. We try and let the kids do a lot of hands-on stuff in a
safe way,” said Long. “They are (learning) and having fun at the same time.”
This is the third session of the Hill Impact Program, which is named for the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, known to locals as The Hill because of its location in Hershey. The course is open to students from all geographical locations. “For the first session, we had some students who drove three hours one way to attend,” Long pointed out.
He said that the students often come away from the program realizing that law enforcement officers have chosen their career because they want to serve the community. “As troopers, we put the community above ourselves. It’s amazing how fast they learn that and how quickly they catch on,” Long said.
The program also encour-
ages a relationship between young people and law enforcement officers. “We have a core group of instructors that will be here every Tuesday. The kids not only are familiar with the faces, they develop a mentorship out of it as well,” Long noted. “We urge the kids if they have questions or need anything to reach out to us. We supply them with our contact information and we have question-and-answer sessions. It’s a great way for us to have that accessibility in the community.”
Long encourages students to register as soon as possible, since space is limited and spots fill up quickly. Those who complete the course will take part in a graduation ceremony and receive a certificate. For more information about the program and to obtain an application, contact Long at ra-sprecruiter-acad@pa.gov or 717-497-4577.

The Tin Bin will present its 50th annual open house on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Current owners Sally Lehman and Susan LuttonPrentiss are the daughters of Jim and Jo and began working for the business in 1992. Soon after Sally and Susan joined the business, they began a website, www.thetinbin.com, and now products are shipped all over the country.
During the open house, refreshments will be served, including the wassail that has been a tradition since the first open house. Although Jo is retired, she will be present at the event. The Tin Bin’s regular business hours are on Wednesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Soccer Team Raises Funds For Cancer Research
The Lancaster Mennonite (LM) boys’ varsity soccer team recently joined with area L-L League soccer teams wearing shirts in support of the Red Card Cancer initiative. L-L League schools and families donated to support the cause, and local teams wore the shirts during warmups all week to do the same. Red Card Cancer is a nonprofit in partnership with the American Cancer Society, committed to raising money and awareness for cancer research.
LM joined the initiative in memory of the late Nathan Longenecker, a former LM student and boys’ soccer player who died a year ago following an eight-month battle with brain cancer. Lynn Longenecker, Nathan’s father, noted that Nathan received his cancer diagnosis in the spring of his freshman year of college. “It was the most powerless feeling to see the disease take over and destroy his healthy 19-year-old body and know that no one knew how to stop it,” said Lynn. “Thanks to the school (LM), team, and the Red Card Cancer campaign for helping support research to better understand this terrible disease. It won’t bring Nathan back, but will hopefully help make better outcomes possible for others in the future.” Nathan’s brother, Jesse, a junior, is a current
member of the LM team.
The LM team also participated in honor of LM teacher and boys’ soccer goalie coach Jim Amstutz’s brother, Pete, who is currently fighting Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Pete and his wife live in Goshen, Ind. “Being so far
apart, I sometimes feel helpless in knowing how to be supportive. This was something my family and I could do to stand with Pete and the Longenecker family,” said Jim. He also noted that when he was a men’s soccer coach at Bluffton University, Pete was
the team manager.
The soccer team, together with LM Soccer Booster Club and the LM Advancement office, raised $800 in support of Red Card Cancer.

Dutch Apple To Present “Elf The Musical”
Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre will present “Elf the Musical” this holiday season. Based on the 2003 Will Ferrell movie, the musical will open on Friday, Nov. 18, and run through Sunday, Jan. 8, 2023.
“Elf the Musical” introduces audience members to a young orphan named Buddy, who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported to the North Pole. Raised by elves, Buddy does not know he is actually a human. When his enormous size and poor toymaking skills cause him to face the truth, Buddy embarks on a
journey to New York City to find his birth father and discover his true identity.
“Elf the Musical” features Matthew Michael as Buddy, Anna Parchem as Jovie, Payton Moledor as Emily Hobbs, Carter Gessamen and Brodie Kennedy sharing the part of Michael Hobbs, Craig Sherman as Walter Hobbs and Jim Moyer as Santa Claus.
The production is directed by Dean Sobon, with musical direction by JP Meyer and choreography by Kerry Lambert.

In combination with prior eligibility updates in 2020 for those who spent time in other European countries, this new change effectively eliminates the
