WHS Holds Homecoming BY ANN MEAD ASH
n Oct. 23, Warwick High School (WHS) held its annual homecoming celebration. The 2020 homecoming queen, Morgan Metzler, was crowned by her father, Shaun Metzler, during halftime of the varsity football game against Cocalico High School (CHS). WHS triumphed over CHS with a score of 49 to 14. The 12 WHS homecoming queen candidates were Kylie Adomnik, Tanner Armstrong, Emily Behn, Kayla Bennecoff, Sydney Harmes, Amber Houser, Katy Kramer, Alexis Mentzer, Morgan Metzler, Mue Gay Paw, Lauren Pyle, and Sarah Van Scoten. Kylie is the daughter of Barry Adomnik and Koren Adomnik of Lititz. At school, Kylie is a member of Interact, Club Aevidum, and

Unite for Mini-THON. Following graduation, she plans to become a real estate agent and interior designer. Tanner is the daughter of Ryan and Alison Armstrong of Lititz. At school, Tanner is a member of Aevidum and Interact Club. She plays girls’ basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse. After graduation, she plans to attend DeSales University to major in forensic psychology with a minor in criminal justice. She also plans to continue playing lacrosse. Emily is the daughter of Mike Behn and Nicole Behn of Lititz. At school, she is a member of Pals and Interact Club, and she has been named to the distinguished honor roll. With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America� because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s culture today. The focus on coal and

modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk.
Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. ready to give up, and that determination resulted in significant contributions to two local nonprofit organizations. “About 18 months ago, we decided to try it again,â€? said Selfon, who co-chaired the group with Gail Sterman of Willow Valley Communities. “We started to talk,â€? said Selfon, who noted that Sterman was newly arrived from Jacksonville, Fla., at the time. “(Sterman) was very familiar with women’s collective giving. She had experience with it.â€? The two began to brainstorm. “We started thinking about what we had to do to make it work ‌ and we laid out a plan,â€? said Selfon. Part of that plan was to make the group affordable. “We wanted to try to build this up within the temple community,â€? explained Selfon, who noted that Temple Shaarai Shomayim Rabbi Jack Paskoff puts an emphasis on charity and good deeds. “We do a lot of that, but we thought this would be something women specifically could get involved
in,� Selfon said. According to Selfon, women’s philanthropy is growing by leaps and bounds, and she and Sterman saw that it was time for women in Lancaster to join the movement. “We wanted our women to come to understand the ability they have with their own money to give and make decisions about how that money is given,� she said. “They can determine to whom it is given and for what.� A small group began meeting in the fall of 2019, giving themselves the name Deborah’s Circle. “We liked Deborah because she was smart and strategic - a general and a judge,� said Selfon of the character from the Torah. She added that the concept of a circle was added because life revolves in a never-ending circle. The group’s mission is to provide financial grants to nonprofit organizations serving women and/or children in Lancaster County. “We wanted to keep it local and have it be about women or women and children,� Selfon said.

The group that started with about six women around a table eventually grew to 17. Then, everything changed. “COVID came,� recalled Selfon, who noted that after that the group met via computer, determined to continue what they had started. A steering committee comprised of Selfon, Sterman, Robin Adler, Linda Hirsch, Nancy Kurland, Risa Paskoff, and Joan Sherman formed, and Deborah’s Circle kept meeting virtually. “ We needed to determine more about who we were and what we were going to be,� said Selfon, who noted that the group set member contributions at $10 per month or $120 a year. In the throes of COVID-19 restrictions, the group had amassed about $2,000. “Originally, we were going to investigate some agencies and ask leaders to come and talk to us about needs,� said Selfon, who noted that COVID-19 restrictions stymied that plan. At first, the group was going to wait to distribute funds, but realizing that the needs local organizations were meeting were increasing, they decided to act. “ We called for an (online) meeting of the

steering committee, and we agreed to give some of the funds away to organizations that had pressing needs.� The group ultimately gave $750 each to Milagro House and the Lancaster County Food Hub. “The bottom line is that I would not have written a check for $750 to either one of them (by myself)� said Selfon, who noted what a delight it was to see the faces of the group members when the organizations were told about the funds they would receive. “We were all awestruck that 17 of us could do this, and we felt it made a big impact for the two organizations we gave money to.� With the group formed and distributing funds, members are now looking to expand. “Women at other temples are being asked to join,� said Selfon. Selfon hopes to grow the group to about 40 or more members to make an even bigger impact. generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler
commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential participants must serve Lancaster County residents, be registered 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing, and have independent audits or reviews. In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring organizations to adhere to COVID19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo

props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extra give.org/info/downloads. “At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an inperson countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from 5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/ extragivecast. “Even though we can’t be together, we want to build the ExtraGive CAST together,” Spangler remarked. “We want folks to really feel like they’re prime players in the day. Katy is the daughter of KC and Christy Kramer of Lititz. At school, Katy is vice president of NHS, secretary of National German Honor Society, secretary of Interact Club, and a Link Crew leader. She is a member of the Women of the Future Club, and she takes part in spring and winter track and field and plays tennis. Outside school, Katy plays electric guitar in the youth band at her church. After graduation, she plans to attend Penn State University to major in engineering. Alexis is the daughter of Andre and Vanessa Ellis of Lititz. At school, she plays field hockey. After graduation, she plans to attend culinary arts school to become a chef and a baker with hopes of eventually owning her own restaurant. Morgan is the daughter of Shaun Metzler of Lititz. At school, she is a member of Link Crew. Outside school, she volunteers at Luther Acres Retirement Home and is a member of the Lancaster Evangelical Free Church youth group. After graduation, she plans to attend college to study physical therapy. Mue of Lititz is the daughter of Poh Chi. At school, Mue is studying to be a dental assistant through a program at Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. After graduation, she plans to continue her education to become a dental hygienist. Lauren is the daughter of Mike and Kelly Pyle of Lititz. At school, she is a Link Crew leader. She is a member of Interact Club, Aevidum, and Unite Athletics. She is captain of the girls’ basketball team, and she plays soccer and participates in unified track. Outside school, she is captain of the PA Classics Academy soccer team, and she volunteers at Water Street Mission. After graduation, she plans to attend Saint Francis University to major in early childhood education and play soccer. Sarah is the daughter of Barry and Amy Van Scoten of Lititz. At school, Sarah is a member of NHS, Link Crew, and the Global Social Problems Club. She serves as captain of the field hockey team and participated in unified track. Outside school, she plays field hockey with the Alley Cats Field Hockey Club and helped to coach youth field hockey clinics. She has volunteered for Milagro House. After graduation, she plans to attend Bryant Univesity to major in politics and law and play field hockey.

Fulton St., Ephrata, will hold a Christmas craft show on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will include more than 40 vendors, a poinsettia sale, baked goods, a chicken barbecue, PA Dairymen’s Farm Show milkshakes, a coffee cafe, other food and beverages, and a visit from Cylo, the Barnstormers’ mascot. Poinsettias must be ordered
