Millport Conservancy To Host Fall Fest Making Plans To Return To Vietnam
By Ann Mead Ash
To Andrea Rush, executive director for the North Museum of Nature and Science, partnering with Millport Conservancy to hold a Family Fun Fall Fest just made sense. “Why wouldn’t we do this?” asked Rush. “We are very attuned to our collective impact in the community. In working together, we achieve more for the Lancaster County residents we both serve.” With that goal in mind, the organizations’ inaugural Fall Fest will be held on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Millport Conservancy, 737 E. Millport Road, Lititz. The event will include a variety of games and other activities, including a mini reptile petting zoo and the Great Lititz Run Pumpkin Race, which will involve real pumpkins. Organizers have put their heads together to come up with fun activities See Fall Fest pg 10

Gifts Of Joy Seeks Christmas Donors “We want to always provide that small glimmer of hope,” said Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America Lancaster County (MHALC). McDevitt noted that one of the organization’s main goals is to help prevent isolation among those in the county struggling with mental health issues and, by doing so, to prevent suicide. “(Gifts of Joy) is one of the things we do at Christmastime for those who have severe mental health issues,” McDevitt explained. Working with nearly 50 case managers with the Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, MHALC provided 800 gifts for 463 children and adults during the 2018 holiday season. “One of the things See Gifts Of Joy pg 3
At Garden Spot High School (GSHS), teacher Lei Williams teaches English as a second language. Williams was born in Vietnam, and she has relatives there. In 2015, Williams first organized for a group of GSHS students to visit Vietnam. In the summer of 2019, she led a second group of students to the country. In May 2019, before the second trip, a group from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 gave a presentation at GSHS. The organization’s educational committee visits nearly 20 middle and high schools a year, giving as many as 30 living history presentations. “Sometimes we have lunch, and teachers join us,” said Douglas Kelly, See Vietnam pg 6
