Through his stage productions of “Box Out Bullying,” Jeremy Rubenstein has shared his message about bullying across the country and positively impacted thousands of lives. Now, it seems that the next logical step in Rubenstein’s 18-year journey of inspiration would be to bring that message home to Lancaster County. “I think this is something that everybody has a story with,” said Rubenstein, who has backgrounds in education, theater and basketball. “They’ve been bullied, they’ve witnessed bullying or they’ve (been bullies) themselves. Children are going to mimic the people See Bullying pg 4 Actors perform a version of “Box Out Bullying.” CHECK OUT OUR

Murals are so much more than oversized paintings. Colorful, loud and proud, murals are the ultimate in visual storytelling. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has a great big story to tell. “Murals are a great way to celebrate the community in a positive way and add some color to your day,” said Mike Andrelczyk, the communications and volunteer manager for the organization. “This mural is a celebration of community, and the Lancaster Habitat ReStore is a place where the community can come together to support our mission of building homes, community and hope, just by shopping and getting a great deal. This mural is really special for a lot of reasons, but one of the best parts is that it illuminates how Habitat families work hard to make their dream of homeownership a reality, and how people from all walks of life come together to make our community a better place and build a brighter future.” In late August, L ancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, which is located at 1061 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, unveiled a 48-foot-by-17-foot mural depicting and commemorating its special journey of community leadership. The mural also recognized the organization’s 40 years of making Lancaster and Lebanon better places to live. Bullying from pg 1 they love. With something as serious as bullying, we can’t have mixed messages. One of the messages we teach is that even people who exhibit bullying behavior need help too. We want to create empathy. This is something that’s full of hope.” Rubenstein and his small traveling troupe, which includes two versatile actors, present versions of “Box Out Bullying” about 300 times annually, in places like California, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, Utah and Nashville. The 45-minute educational and entertaining presentations are tailored to their audiences and performed at elementary schools, middle schools, theaters, performing arts centers and community centers. But “Box Out Bullying” has only been staged a handful of times in Lancaster County, most recently in East Earl in September of 2024.
“Not as many as I’d like,” said Rubenstein, when asked about the number of times his message has been presented locally. “The issues kids are facing here in Lancaster aren’t unique. But the cool thing is that the solutions are the same. We’d love to do more shows in Lancaster. “Do people know about this?” added Rubenstein. “We could definitely do a better job of letting people know about this. I’m very careful about the product we put forward. These are kids; they’re very impressionable. I wish they did know about me. People who have us once keeping on booking us year after year.” The stage presentations of “Box Out Bullying” revolve around characters and cousins Tom and Jerry and are designed to identify what constitutes bullying and what doesn’t. The message is
clear, but room is left for creative interpretation. “There’s a script, and the plot follows the trials and tribulations of Tom and Jerry,” said Rubenstein. “There’s no fourth wall in the show, and when the actors come out, they’re continuously interacting with the audience. There’s a box in the middle of the stage; it has all the answers to bullying inside of it, but it’s locked. With each lesson learned, a lock pops off the box. When the audience figures it out, the box will open and inside is the answer. “You’ve got to see the show to find out the answer,” Rubenstein continued. “It’s a very big box, but the answer is very small, and it’s been in front of the audience the whole time. There’s a difference between accidents and conflicts and bullying. We want to give students different tools while

teaching them grit and resilience.” Rubenstein is a 2002 graduate of Manheim Township and currently resides in Manheim Township with his growing family. In 2025, Rubenstein received the Manheim Township School District’s Distinguished Alumni award. “We know that bullying doesn’t just affect the school but also the community,” said Rubenstein. “When I started this in 2008, bullying might have been just a whisper. People liked that it was researchbased. Now, we are addressing this for the high school level. We’re developing new curriculum. We’re trying to build on this even more. We’d like to be well known. I’m very optimistic with how this is going. The message is there is hope. “This is still a local story,” Rubenstein concluded. For additional information, go to www.boxoutbullying.com.

community partners, organization staff and volunteers, supporters and local residents who have benefited from the nonprofit’s services and featured a public address from Lancaster mayor Jaime Arroyo. The 40th anniversary mural was created by local artists Brenda Blank and Steve Wilson and was sponsored by Joe, Jake, David and Emily Deerin. “The great thing about Habitat events is they are always such joyous celebrations of the community coming together to do something meaningful and powerful,” said Andrelczyk. “We’ve grown a lot over the course of 40 years. We believe the best of humanity comes from kindness, compassion and the generosity of others. Together, we overcome great challenges.” The mural was painted on the southeast interior wall of the Habitat for Humanity ReStore in Lancaster. From brainstorming sessions in the spring to planning and then ultimately execution, the mural project took more than 200 hours to complete. expected to attend the Holiday Gift Show, a combination of locals and out-of-towners. “Some are out on a stroll looking for something that strikes their fancy,” said Zdancewic. “Some people will attend because Lititz is a destination. They want to walk around and see what Lititz has to offer. We have new members, and some of those members will be at the show. Visitors will see new faces and new work this year.” With her fine art pieces, earrings and necklaces by her side, Zdancewic will be there both in body and in spirit. “I love talking to people,” said Zdancewic. “I love meeting new people and sharing the work I created. I love seeing old customers and showing them the new work I created.” The Holiday Gift Show, which is in its 10th year of operation, perfectly portrays LAA’s overall mission. LAA is headquartered at 51 N. Broad St., Lititz. “It’s about bringing art to the community and bringing the community to ar t,” said Zdancewic, “and sharing with the community what artists have to offer. As the years have gone on, we’ve just gotten more comfortable with the show. We know what to expect, who to expect, and we look forward to seeing the same customers year after year.” For additional information, go to www.lititzartassociation .com.
