McMahon, owner of The Savory Gourmet in Lititz, wanted to do something for the local residents who support Lititz businesses. “We have a lot of tourists who come to town, but the people who live here are our customers, and we love them,” stated McMahon, who decided to combine a seasonal competition with a donation drive for the Lititz Warwick Community Chest, a food pantry for those living in the Warwick School District.

The first scarecrow competition was organized by the Lititz Merchants Association and Venture Lititz in early October. By Oct. 14, Second Friday, more than 20 scarecrows had been put together and stationed in front of local businesses on both Main and Broad streets, with the idea of attracting visitors rather than scaring them away. In early January, Clyde Snyder of Lancaster Township was asked by the president of Vietnam Veterans of America whether there were any Merchant Marines buried in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Snyder, who founded the Vet21 Salute Honor Guard of Lancaster, looked into the situation,

and when he learned there were 90 Merchant Marine veterans there, he did the research and raised the money to place a Merchant Marine monument. The ceremony dedicating that memorial was held on June 4.

In April, Snyder learned that no memorial to Vietnam veterans existed in the cemetery. “I said, ‘I’ve got to do this for my brothers,’” recalled Snyder, who set about raising the $7,700 needed to fund the memorial under the sponsorship of Blankets of Honor, a nonprofit that presents veterans

with blankets depicting the branch they served in.

On Oct. 8, at noon, a ceremony was held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery to dedicate the memorial. The event opened with a flyover by the Liberty War Bird Association Huey, a restored Vietnam helicopter now operating as a flying museum based at the Lancaster Airport. Mike Caimi, one of the founders of the Liberty War Birds, noted that taking part in the flyover fulfills goals of the organization. “The mission of the Liberty War Bird Association is to honor the legacy of our Vietnam veterans and provide a healing link to their past,” explained Caimi. “What better way to accomplish that goal than to participate in the dedication of the Vietnam veterans’ memorial at the Indiantown Gap National

Cemetery, a hallowed site where not only are a number of Vietnam veterans buried, but two of our own recently deceased volunteers have been interred?” Caimi reported that he was on board for the flyover. “It was a solemn moment for our flight crew,” he recalled.

Amanda Spangenberg played the bagpipes and Snyder spoke. Manny Acuna of Blankets of Honor also spoke. Acuna later reflected on the importance of the memorial at the Vets Breakfast Club event in Bird-in-Hand on Oct. 15. “This monument (was) dedicated to you guys who served and the ones who didn’t come home,” he said, recalling the event. “On my way home (from the dedication), I just cried because you guys don’t have that recognition, (but) every day that we can give you that recognition

is a day that we can say, ‘Welcome home.’”

The invocation and prayer was given by the Rev. Grover DeVault, a Vietnam veteran. Speakers also included Vietnam veteran Chieu V Le, Dick Hoxworth, Sen. Ryan Aument, and Rep. Frank Ryan. An honorable riderless horse was provided by Woerth It Hollow, an official nonprofit equine-assisted therapy organization for veterans and people with disabilities. Sara Hodgkiss, veteran and Woerth It Hollow CEO called it an honor to provide the services.

Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard oversaw flag duties at the event, Vet21 Salute provided a rifle volley, and Snyder played taps.

Snyder made special note of donors Carole Wiker, Lorie Kiser, Ken Pederson, and Abel & Son Roofing & Siding.

scarecrow, and from Oct. 14 through Oct. 24, area residents voted by putting nonperishable foods in the baskets. McMahon explained that on Oct. 24, merchants counted up the number of food items they had received to determine the winner. Olio Olive Oil and Balsamics triumphed in the first scarecrow competition by collecting 70 of the total 250 food items donated to the community chest as a result of the competition.

McMahon said that autumn was the perfect time to hold the competition. “The Lititz Warwick Community Chest is always in need this time of year,” she said, adding that putting merchant creativity on display gave residents a reason to visit downtown. “The townspeople (could) visit, have fun, walk around, bring their kids to

see (the scarecrows), and then make a donation,” she said, noting that the other merchants were happy to jump in and take part. McMahon contacted Pine Hill Farm to provide hay bales, which her husband picked up, hauling three truckloads to her store, where the merchants retrieved them to use in making their scarecrows.

“That’s how Lititz works,” said McMahon of the merchant and resident participation. “It’s just a really great place where everybody is willing to do whatever (is needed) to help each other.”

The Lititz Merchants Association is part of Venture Lititz, which works to improve Lititz for all its citizens. More information about the organization may be found at https://lititzpa.com.

Christmas Food Bazaar Slated

Brunnerville United Methodist Church, 517 Pine Hill Road, Lititz, will hold a preorder-only Christmas food bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 3. Holiday items like Christmas cookies, chocolate candy, homemade soup, and heat-and-eat meal items can be reserved using an order form available from church members or from www .Brunnervillechurch.org.

Orders can be placed by

mailing completed forms with payment to the church address or by contacting Joyce at 717-6260109. All preorders must be received by Saturday, Nov. 19.

Order pickup will be from 9 to 11 a.m. on Dec. 3 in the church parking lot. A variety of handmade fresh greens and Christmas wreaths will also be available for purchase during that time.

This year marks the 86th consecutive season that the Tamburitzans has performed, and the group bills itself as it the longest-running live stage production in the United States. The group was founded in 1937 by A. Lester Pierce after he met three young tamburitza musicians. They performed as the St. Thomas Tamburitza Trio until traveling to Pittsburgh, which Pierce felt would make a good headquarters due to its cultural diversity. Pierce made a work scholarship arrangement with Duquesne University for the performers, and they became known as the Duquesne University Tamburitzans in the 1940s.

The tamburitza, after which the company is named, is a family of stringed instruments originating from Croatia and is commonly used in folk music from Serbia, Bosnia and several surrounding countries. In its earlier days, the Tamburitzans focused only on music from Eastern Europe, but has since expanded its catalog to feature multiple other cultures. “As the world has changed, so have we,” said Alyssa Hrishenko, executive director of the Tamburitzans. “We’ve done Bollywood and Latin American performances and try to respectfully represent as many countries as we can across the states.”

The performance that will be featured in Lititz is titled “Phoenix: A New Dawn.” It

will include music from Italian culture and conclude with a traditional Ukrainian piece. “We like to think of this production as a rebirth of culture and our ensemble after (the COVID-19 pandemic),” said Hrishenko. “We’re also happy to do our part to keep Ukrainian culture on stage during this time of turmoil.”

McSherry is the lead accordionist and leader of onstage musicians for the Tamburitzans and is a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh. He began performing at 8 years old, playing his accordion at local nursing homes and eventually becoming involved with productions though Servant Stage and the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre. This is McSherry’s second year with the Tamburitzans, and he is looking forward to bringing its music to his hometown. “Performing with them is absolutely wonderful. I’m not Eastern European, so this entire world of music is new to me,” said McSherry. “I love getting to explore it and meeting so many new people.” McSherry is studying classical languages and French, and he now hopes to major in Slavic studies as well.

The Tamburitzans will hold auditions on Saturday, Dec. 3. For more information on auditioning, visit www.the tamburitzans.org/auditions. To purchase tickets for the performance in Lititz, visit https://tinyurl.com/lititz show.

When Megan Sauder Ralston began undergoing treatment for breast cancer in 2016 at the age of 29, she noticed that young women like herself with the disease did not receive the support older women did. “Some insurance companies’ coverage required you to be 40 for some benefits,” said Megan’s sister Jacquelyn Iannello, who founded Thrive and Grit, an organization that supports cancer patients in a number of ways.

Megan, who was raised in Manheim Township and attended Lancaster Mennonite School, was living in Virginia when she was first diagnosed with pregnancy-related breast cancer before her son was a year old. She received treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas and at Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute before succumbing to the disease in November of 2018. Before she died, she began Megan’s Fund, which helps give women under age 40 access to mammograms and other early detection tools and helps with financial issues.

While Megan was undergoing

treatment in Charlottesville, Va., where she lived when she was first diagnosed, she received a goodie bag. “She said, ‘We could do that,’” recalled Jacquelyn, a teacher at St. Peter’s Preschool, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster. Working with Heather Cramer, director of the preschool, Jacquelyn is collecting items to fill the Pink Packages that Thrive and Grit now distributes regularly at the Cancer Institute - sometimes giving out as many as 600 in a month. Items currently being accepted at the preschool include lip balm, soft socks, journals, granola bars, candy, gum, hand soap, hand lotions, and hand sanitizer. Gloves, hats, scarves, blankets, and encouraging books will also be accepted.

In addition, Thrive and Grit is holding a soup sale through the end of November. Food items available for sale are squash soup, chili, broccoli cheese soup, and blueberry and strawberry bread. Individuals who would like to purchase food items may text 717-413-4757 or email thriveandgrit@gmail.com. Soup is sold by the quart with croutons, and bread is sold in mini loaves. Funds raised will be donated to metastatic

breast cancer research and to support those battling the disease.

Megan’s mother, Bonnie Sauder, noted that her other daughter, Candi Sauder King, and son, John Patrick Sauder, and other family members are also involved in fundraising for Thrive and Grit. Bonnie said that past fundraisers have included a fall car show. She also mentioned a catered meal for the staff of the Cancer Institute that is held each December. “It was Megan’s idea to every Christmas have a thank you meal for all the staff at Ann B. Barshinger,” said Jacquelyn, who noted that at the dinner staff members speak about new things that are happening at the

Arc Angel Holiday Project Announced

The Arc Lancaster Lebanon will sponsor the Arc Angel Holiday Project for the upcoming holiday season. In collaboration with Lancaster County Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (BHDS), The Arc Lancaster Lebanon organizes and distributes holiday gifts, purchased by volunteers, to children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities or autism.

The Arc Angel Holiday Project receives wishes for gifts

from individuals who will not receive gifts during the holidays due to limited resources or limited family/friend support. These specific gift wishes are passed along to each volunteer for purchasing and then returned to The Arc for distribution to the list of individuals in need.

To volunteer and learn more about how the Arc Angel Holiday Project works, contact Amy Austin at 717-394-5251 or amy@thearclancleb.org.

Chism Earns Eagle Scout Award

John “JD” Chism, a member of Boy Scout Troop 83 in Leola, had his Eagle Court of Honor on Sept. 19 at the United Zion Church in Leola. JD is the son of John and Megan Chism of Lititz, and he is a 10th-grader at Manheim Township High School.

JD is the 99th member of Troop 83 to receive his Eagle Award under the leadership of Scoutmaster Steven Eddy. He earned 21 merit badges and had 40 nights of camping, and he attended summer camp at Camp Bashore.

His service project involved building and installing a small free library at a neighborhood park in Leola known as the Fruit Bowl. He and his grandfather, Dave White of

Manheim, spent many hours together planning, constructing, and painting the library. It was installed May 14 with the help of fellow Scouts and will be available for use by residents in the neighborhood. The project related to JD’s longtime enjoyment of reading.

JD plans to continue attending Scouting meetings and to assist with the younger Scouts.
