There is a society of covert actors operating in our community. They call themselves “The Lancaster-Lebanon League Quarterback Club.” They meet regularly under the pretenses of victories, competitiveness and an exchange of game film. But the real nature of their mission is to promote a game they love, foster lasting friendships and aid student-athletes. “It’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself,” said Kris Miller, the ringleader and president of the club. “I played in the Lancaster-Lebanon League, I was an assistant coach and now I’m a head coach. The group of guys and camaraderie we have is really cool, and it’s special to be a part of that.” Miller is the head football coach at Ephrata Senior High School and one of more than 40 coaches - one representative from each of the Lancaster-Lebanon League’s 37 member schools actively involved with the club, a tradition-rich organization dedicated to growing the game of football and helping its players become better young men on and off the gridiron. During the regular scholastic fall season, the quarterback club meets at 7 p.m. on every Tuesday at the centrally located Ephrata American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. T he 90-minute mee tings consist of supper, coaches’ nominations for players of the week and players of the year, voting, discussion and the planning of upcoming events. Tai chi is a martial art, a series of inter-related movements, a discipline and a state of mind. Tai chi is also an undervalued and underappreciated form of exercise. “Tai chi is often described as a moving meditation, connecting the body, breath and mind,” said Jenny Bones, a certified tai chi instructor and a tai chi easy practice leader. “When practicing tai chi, we are cultivating energy and connecting to our spirit. That requires a very specific skill set, and Debbie Kline-Smith was a very special lady. “Debbie was ver y detail-oriented,” said Keith Reifsnyder, Kline-Smith’s assistant, colleague and former student. “It’s hard Debbie Kline-Smith and her husband, Michael to separate (her profesA beloved figure in the Warwick sional life from her personal life), because she lived it. On a sunny afternoon in April 2010, Betsy Shank was mowing the grass in front of her home in Millersville. After seeing what initially appeared to be a dead baby squirrel, Shank cut the engine and rushed to take a closer look. The little kit was still alive, so Shank raced to her computer and searched for advice on how to best help the animal. Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on the animals it serves. At the facility, Shank and a team of volunteers provide medical stabilization, nutr ition and housing for injured animals such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs to help them

recover and return to the wild with minimal human imprinting. After severe storms and a tornado tore through Lancaster County in August, local residents b e ga n si f t i n g t hro u g h debris to find the extent of the damage and clean u p t h e i r y a rd s . M a n y people discovered they weren’t the onl y ones affected by the destructive weather; hundreds of animals were left injured or displaced in the storm’s wake, including mothers that le ft behind nests of their young. Within a fe w d ay s , t h e l o b b y of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation was packed with leaf-covered locals who halted their storm cleanup to bring baby rabbits, squirrels and mice in need of care. Although the rehabilitation facility had just closed its intake office, Shank contacted Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven as soon as she heard a major storm was about to hit the county. “I said ‘Hey, I’m closed, but trees and houses are going to come down. People aren’t going to drive over an hour to bring these animals to you,’” Shank said. “They said if I took the animals in and got them stabiliz ed, I could transfer them to Red Creek. So we just opened the doors.” Within two days, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation took in more than 100 animals affected by the storm. A ssisted by a te a m o f vo l u n te e r s , Shank and her husband, David Aichele, stabilized as many of the animals as they could before transferring them to Red Creek Wildlife Center. Any of the rescues still in need of medical attention remained at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation to recover. “People were in the middle of cleaning up what happened to their h o m e s , b u t t h e y we re compassionate enough to prioritize helping these baby animals. It was just amazing ,” said Aichele, Shank’s righthand man and steadfast supporter who’s helped with everything from construction
pro jects to emergenc y rescues since she founded Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation in 2021. Acor n Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation moved to its cur rent location in November 2024, an expansion that greatly increased the organization’s capacity for rescued animals and the specialized equipment necessary to care for them. Although a major fundraising campaign made the expansion possible, Shank continues to rely on community support to cover the rehabilitation center’s expenses, as well as help from volunteer staff members. In September, Acorn Acres Rehabilitation Center launched Second Chance Circle, a community of monthly donors who can contribute any amount to support the organization. “It’s a whole lot of people

giving a little bit that are going to make a whole lot of second chances possible,” said Shank. “Every donation helps us give another animal a second chance.” In addition to joining S e cond C hance C ircle, community members who wish to suppor t Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation may become volunteers to assist with var ious aspects of the operation. “People can help w i th animal care or other things that are crazy important for us but don’t require contact with the animals,” said Shank. Tai Chi from pg 1 “Yoga is a practice of Asanas (poses) that are to be interpreted and then explored by the practitioner. Tai chi is a meditation through continuous movement.” Bones is also the owner of Black Cat Yoga, which does not offer a brick-andmortar location. She leads groups of tai chi practitioners at places like the Lititz Public Library, as well as instructs personal tai chi sessions. “My 11-year-old calls it ‘slow karate,’” said Bones. “You can absolutely practice tai chi when you wake, before bed, in your living room, in your yard, anywhere. Tai chi is practiced regularly in a group. The intention of group practice is to raise communal consciousness and connection. You can practice standing and walking, seated in a chair or even in bed.” Tai chi’s benefits are broad and far-reaching. Constant and consistent tai chi practice can improve balance and prevent falls, help to manage symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, improve cognitive functions, lower stress levels, assist in managing depression, help manage chronic obstruction pulmonary disease (COPD) and improve overall well-being. “All humans deserve the opportunity to explore movement in a way that

makes them feel good,” said Bones, a resident of Lititz. “Tai chi isn’t a performance so much as it is a personal experience. Yes, there are movements and shapes, and those shap es and movements will express differently for each person who practices. A consistent practice should be every day, even if it’s 60 seconds daily.” Bones has been a certified tai chi instructor for four years, after receiving training as a practice leader from Dr. Kalind Bakshi of The Breath Lab in Philadelphia. Her tai chi journey began in 2018 when she started practicing Integral Tai Chi with Kathy Brubaker at The Yoga Place in Ephrata. “I had been taking public classes and had experienced benefits beyond measure,” said Bones. “I wanted to share that opportunity Sign up for emails or call

tion. All of the shows were professionally produced and well received in the community. “It’s a result of hard work and dedication,” KlineSmith told Townlively in 2024. “We have some wonderful people who are very dedicated. The quality performances bring people back. They know they’re going to hear music they like, and the choir enjoys singing. I don’t think we’d have audiences that are so large if we weren’t improving. I don’t think we’d be playing to full houses. That’s what’s exciting to me. It kind of speaks for itself.” “I remember when Debbie retired from Warwick,” said Reifsnyder, a resident of Lititz. “We did an alumni celebration at her last concert, and she was so touched by it. though she had nothing to do with it, all of her hard work was up on that stage. The nurture comes with the perfection. She always thought we could do better, and she cared about people.” Following some self-ref lection, Reifsnyder has agreed to carry on what Kline-Smith started, in the role of LAAC’s new director. The choir’s next performance, titled “Yule Be Swinging” - which includes concepts, themes and a medley produced by KlineSmith and reimag ined favorites from Reifsynder - will be presented at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20, at Warwick High School’s Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. “I think this is what D e b b i e w a n t e d ,” s a i d Reifsnyder. “If I had decided to resign, I don’t think there was enough structure, and I thought the choir was going to collapse. That was one of the biggest reasons I decided to stay on. These were Debbie’s people. “Just because Debbie is gone, the choir is not done,” concluded Reifsnyder. “I don’t say I’m a replacement, because there is no replacement for Debbie. I want to carry on that legacy for her. That’s why we’re doing this.”

Quarterback from pg 1
Coaches discuss a topic at a recent Lancaster-Lebanon League Quarterback Club meeting.
themes, like all-timers’ night, officials’ night, athletic directors’ night, college night and media night. “We all want to support each other,” said Miller. “We played Cocalico in week two. It was a great game, and then on the following Tuesday I got an opportunity to sit down with Coach (Bryan) Strohl and have a conversation. We get to bounce ideas off each other, and everyone has always been willing to give feedback. It’s a great resource to have. There are a lot more similarities between coaches than there are differences.” The quarterback club also recognizes individual accomplishments through its awards for players of the week, players of the year and its all-academic team, and those honors are released to local media outlets in a timely fashion. The latter of those awards are announced in early December following the club’s year-end banquet at The Timbers Restaurant in Mount Gretna. “Football par ticipation numbers overall are going down, for whatever reasons,” said Miller. “Football is a hard sport
that requires a lot of time. You get 10 guaranteed opportunities (games) to play, and you’ve got to work 52 weeks a year to play. Recognizing players is important because you want to recognize the work they put in. It also gets their name out there. Anytime players see their names in the paper, they feel like the work has been worth it.” The quarterback club has been operating in its current capacity as an organization for 75 years. Not every football league across the state is supported by a group like the Lancaster-Lebanon League Quarterback Club. “It originally started as a place where coaches could come together and do film exchange,” said Miller. “But our purpose has always been to promote players and grow our sport. Because technology has changed, we’ve had to adjust how we do it. As fierce as competitors as we are on Friday nights as coaches, the other six days of the week we’re here to grow the game and give kids an opportunity to play the sport. We care about our sport, and we care about kids.”
