Staging “Charley’s Aunt”

WHS Announces Fall Play

Aunt” has been a staple of high school theater departments for decades, but when director Connie Hiliar first presented the idea of performing the play to Warwick High School (WHS) students, she learned they were unfamiliar with the material. “I said, ‘Think “Mrs. Doubtfire,” but with college-age kids,’” recalled Hiliar. “They could understand because, of course, every kid grew up with ‘Mrs Doubtfire.’”
Warwick Performing Arts will present “Charley’s Aunt” at WHS, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Nov. 5, and Sunday, Nov. 6, at 2 p.m.

Doors will open one hour prior to each show to sell tickets, which are discounted for students and seniors.
In “Charley’s Aunt,” Jack Chesney, played by Grayson Miller, and Charles Wykeham, played by Chance Wilson, are hoping to spend some time with the two young
women they love under the watchful eye of a chaperone. However, their chaperone, Charley’s aunt, Donna Lucia D’Alvadorez, played by Carly Ruchalski, is delayed. This throws a cog into the plans to spend time with Jack’s sweetheart, Kitty Verdun, played by Hope Behringer, and Charles’ sweetheart, Amy Spettigue, played by Aubree Hamer. To rescue the opportunity, they persuade their friend, Lord Fancourt Babberly, played by Christian Wolf, to dress and masquerade as Charley’s aunt and serve as their chaperone, leading to many hilarious mixups. Other players include Jordan Privette as Ela Delahay, Foster Shrom as Sir Francis Chesney, Jaxon King as Brassett, and Zachary Flaiz as Stephen Spettigue, Amy’s uncle.
Hiliar said that she chose the show for two reasons. First, she wanted to offer audience members an escape. “We need something lighthearted,” she said. “I want (audience members) to leave chuckling.”
Gifts Made With LoveSaying Farewell To Mr. Suit
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Mr. Suit Records, 118 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, announced via Instagram on Oct. 3 that it will permanently close its doors at the end of the year. The news was met by a chorus of cries from the community, with responses by everyone from now-internationally famous rockers to those who became acquainted with the store while studying in Lancaster.
BY ANN MEAD ASHHandmade gifts have a special place in the hearts of many givers and receivers during the holiday season. The Lititz Art Association (LAA) Holiday Gift Show, which features more than 20 local artists, is ready to provide a variety of handmade items suitable for gifting.

The year’s Holiday Gift Show will be held once again at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday, Nov. 11, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. “The church has

just been fantastic. They have been delightful,” said Beth Kaylor Brunner, LAA member and show organizer.

According to Kaylor Brunner, the participating artists work in a variety of mediums, including watercolors, acrylics, oils, ornaments, woodcarving, and graphics. “ We’ll have jewelry, ceramics, mixed media, and fiber arts, and some of our members have mugs, prints, and cards.”
“ We will have a special guest,” noted Kaylor Brunner. “The church has a group called the Golden Needles, and they asked last year if they could join us.” The Golden Needles, which is made up of members who do quilting and complete sewing projects, will take part in the show for the second year. “It was wonderful to have them (last year), and they are joining us again this year, which is just delightful,” she said.
Kaylor Brunner praised the convenience of the location

for attendees. “What’s nice is we’ve got plenty of parking, and it’s easy access (from) the back of the church,” she pointed out.
The LAA, which has more than 60 members, holds three shows yearly. The Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show is held in Lititz Springs Park in July, and the Lititz Parkwalk is held in the same location at the end of September.

Kaylor Brunner, who taught art in Lititz for more than 20 years, paints brightly colored flowers and landscapes. She began painting as a small child. Her father was an amateur, self-taught artist who provided his daughter an end of his workbench for her paintings. Later, when he came to live with her and her family, she shared her studio with him.
More information about LAA may be found at www.lititzartassociation.com or by searching for “Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show” on Facebook.

The record store has operated in Lancaster for 15 years and was started by Mike Madrigale, who has run it ever since. Madrigale grew up near Allentown, where he attended Kutztown University and combed through local hole-in-the-wall shops to find additions for his record collection. He moved to Lancaster, where his brother and sisterin-law lived, in 2000.

“I was always working in record stores. When I moved to Lancaster, I ended up being in food service for a while, which was fun, but I always wanted to open my own place,” said Madrigale. He found out through his brother, who owned an art gallery downtown, that a building had opened up. With his own collection, Madrigale seized the opportunity to open a store, and Mr. Suit was born.
“There was definitely a learning curve with finding what I wanted to carry and getting enough of it at one time, but within a few years I hit my stride,” said Madrigale. Mr. Suit wasn’t the only game in town; Stan’s Records on Prince Street offered a collec-

DOVE Westgate Church, 1755 W. Main St., Ephrata, will host a Harvest Festival from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. The free event is open to children ages 2 to 12 and will feature snacks, games and prizes.

tion of classic records, and Angry, Young & Poor on Orange Street has been a punk’s one-stop shop for vinyl and clothing since 1995. But Mr. Suit sold records you might not find at either, having music from more contemporary artists across dozens of genres.
Over the years, Madrigale connected with the Lancaster community both through Mr. Suit and his own musical endeavors. He performed and toured as a member of the post-hardcore outfit Sadaharu, which released several albums on CI Records, and later with garage-punk threepiece High Heels. Although Madrigale met several artists through CI Records and from performing at the Chameleon Club (Michael Kuhn of NAH and 1994! and JB Brubaker of August Burns Red were among the first to react to the news of Mr. Suit’s closure), he also made an impact on hun-

dreds of people who were either visiting Lancaster for the first time or lived locally and needed a certain record.

“I’m thrilled to have had any impact on anyone,” said Madrigale. “I live a couple blocks away and have been here for years. (Mr. Suit) is something for everybody and for the community.” From the parents who needed records f or their kids’ ’50s-themed prom to teenagers in the suburbs who trekked into town to find a new record on the
weekends, Madrigale and his shop made an impact on many people’s lives.

On Wednesday, Nov. 16, a 15-year anniversary event for Mr. Suit will be held at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. The event will feature live music and celebrate the legacy of Madrigale’s shop, which will continue to sell records during its regular hours until Saturday, Dec. 31. More details on the event will be announced on Mr. Suit’s Instagram, @mrsuitrecords, closer to its date.

So, stop in and grab one last record from Mr. Suit, and in Madrigale’s own words, “Let’s make the rest of the year less of a funeral and more of a party, OK?”

Hiliar’s second reason was that she believed current WHS students were outgoing enough to do it well. “You really have to have a special group of kids to be able to pull this show off,” she said. “Charley’s Aunt” is a fastpaced farce peppered with slapstick humor. Hiliar has chosen to perform it using British accents, which is a challenge, but she noted that blocking is also requiring diligent effort. “It’s a very physical show,” she said.
Hiliar believes the extra effort students are making will play out well as the audience members follow how the joke they are in on plays out on stage. “This show is fun (when you) understand
that during Victorian times you could not meet with the young lady without a chaperone,” she explained, noting that Lord Babberly is recruited almost unwillingly, and then the real aunt arrives to watch him portray her. “The word play, the physicalness, and the boys being upset because the young ladies are giving this old woman a kiss, when we as an audience know what’s going on,” she said. “It just adds to the humor.”
Hiliar is assisted in directing the show by Anthony Mendez. Erica Fisher is the costume designer. Mike and Robin Newman are working on props and sets, and Taylor Cole oversees the box office.

Maternal Fetal Medicine Practice Opens In Neffsville
Lancaster Maternal Fetal Medicine (LMFM) recently began seeing patients at its new office at 2568 Lititz Pike, which is located in the old Members 1st Federal Credit Union building in Neffsville.
During five years of growth, the practice has expanded to several locations in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The practice brings specialized care to pregnant mothers experiencing a number of conditions that characterize their pregnancy as high-risk, such as diabetes, pregnancy with multiples, recurrent pregnancy loss or high blood pressure. As the new location opens, LMFM will close the old, leased space at 108 Foxshire Drive, Lancaster.
Since 2017, Lancaster LMFM has been providing care to local families as well as clients from across the country seeking advanced care. The new location will be housed in a newly renovated and expanded former bank, which the practice bought in 2021. LMFM’s services include state-of-the-art 2D/3D and 4D ultrasound scans, surgical pregnancy loss prevention, pregnancy monitoring, pre-pregnancy counseling, and genetic counseling and diabetes management.
The private medical office has two nationally and internationally renowned perinatologists,

Drs. Robert Larkin and Christian Macedonia. A central part of their goal is to be a model practice to reduce the high maternal morbidity and mortality rate in America, especially among people of color. One of the ways they strive to accomplish this goal is to keep every avenue for access to care open; they welcome self-referrals. LMFM also has a special billing program for uninsured and underinsured patients.
LMFM has highly-trained and certified sonographers who provide both routine and specialized ultrasounds. The practive is certified and accredited in all five of the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) areas of OB imaging.

LMFM is a pioneer in 3D ultrasound, telemedicine and genomic medicine. Macedonia performed a 3D ultrasound on a living fetus in December of 1991 at the National Institutes of Health as a government researcher.
Providers include two LMFM physicians, a nurse practitioner, a physician assistant and a high-risk nurse who has a Master of Science in Nursing. The motto of the disabled veteran-owned small business is “Where all are welcome and the future is born.”

Going For Gold
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDLocal athlete Marty Zeamer Jr. has been involved with the Special Olympics for over 20 years, following a rigorous training schedule and participating in meets across the country. This year was his first time competing in nationals, and his hard work paid off; in June, he took home a bronze medal in the 50-meter freestyle relay and placed seventh in the 50meter backstroke relay at the Special Olympics USA Games in Orlando.
Marty started swimming at the Hempfield recCenter in the fall of 2021, training there once a week and training twice a week at the Lititz recCenter with his Olympic coach, Anne Phillips. After competing in Orlando in June, he took the summer off, but will start training again

soon for the beginning of the season in January. Currently, Marty is training for an upcoming powerlifting meet in Villanova.

“He’s always been athletic. Marty started out with soccer and basketball when he was young,” said Chris Zeamer, Marty’s mother. “He found that he enjoys individual sports more than team sports, so he started swimming and powerlifting.” Marty started swimming when he was 8 years old and competes at an event in State College each year. “Being at nationals was on a whole other level,” Chris said. “It was the culmination of all of his training. Marty knew he trained for it and was very excited with his medals.”
Although he found success at the competition in Orlando, Marty has no plans to stop training for the next meet. He has his sights set on mastering
techniques he has yet to try, including platform diving, completing flip turns in the water and adding butterfly and breaststroke to his repertoire.
Marty lives in West Hempfield Township with his mother, Chris; father, Marty Sr.; and dog. The family also includes Marty’s brother, Joe. Marty Sr. is a powerlifting coach for the Special Olympics and works with his son for his lifting competitions. “We’re a very active family,” said Chris. “We go walking three times a week with our dog, Ava, and go biking on many local trails.” Aside from competitive athletics,
Marty loves country music, action movies and watching football with his family.
Three days a week, Marty works at Lighthouse Vocational Services in New Holland, an organization that provides work opportunities and community engagement programs for those with developmental disabilities. Jobs such as assembling and packaging items are offered at the facility, and opportunities for competitive jobs are made available for participants of the program.

Stockings For Soldiers Campaign Underway

For the 13th year, Blue Ridge Communications has signed on as a partner in the Keystone Military Families (KMF) Stockings For Soldiers initiative. To assist in KMF’s goal, Blue Ridge launched a fundraising campaign to help fund and defray the shipping costs of between 8,000 and 10,000 holiday stockings to be sent to servicemen and women stationed around the world this Christmas season. Stockings sent through Stockings For Soldiers are filled with food, hygiene products, holiday decorations, Christmas cards and other requested items.
