Love of Film Will Unite Buffs at Red Rose Festival ONLINE T FALL EVENT CALENDAR

echnically, films combine elements of images, motion, dialogue, ideas and music. It’s a combination of sensory stimuli that can evoke strong emotions and transport viewers to different places and times. Ryan Shank, the founder of the Red Rose Film Festival, has been theatrically transported on many different occasions. “(Films are) an escape,” said Shank. “I’ve always loved stories. I grew up on Ninja Turtles, and I also grew up on ‘Jaws.’ I love to laugh. It’s almost like therapy in a way. I’d rather listen to a story and relate to it than talk about myself.” This year’s edition of Shank’s annual Red Rose Film Festival will be staged on four days, from Thursday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Nov. 9. The festival will include screenings of 60 films - feature-length movies, documentaries and shorts - from

20 countries, as well as a pair of formal gatherings. On Nov. 6, the event will kick off with a welcome party from 5 to 9 p.m. at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster.

Then, on Saturday, Nov. 8, the local film festival will present special awards at a gala from 6 to 10 p.m. at Penn Cinema IMAX, 541 Airport Road, Lititz. “The welcome party is just that,”

So, what’s in a name? A name is an initial point of contact. A name can provide identity and familiarity. A name can come to be associated with ideas, concepts and specific values. Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) has changed its name. Hencefor th, the faith-based, private school will go by Catalyst Christian School (CCS). “It was not a decision that was taken lightly,” said Ashlee

Zimmerman, CCS ’ marketing director. “(School officials) realized nothing was going to feel right because it’s so new. It’s going to be hard to pick a name, and it’s going to grow on you when you start using it. They eliminated all of the other ones, and this is the one they picked. The name fits the school so well.” In late May, the former LAMS formally changed the name it had been known by for 48 years. An intensive rebranding process produced Catalyst Christian School

called to reach,” said Zimmerman. “The school has such a great legacy and such a great foundation. If we are called to be raising up children, we want to make sure the name is not a barrier. We need to help people realize who we are. The question became: ‘How do we help people understand and get people to come and check it out?’” Currently, there are no shortages of educational choices for families in Lancaster County. It’s a competitive market that affords parents and students oppor tunities to explore the best personalized educational options. “When you look at the area we live in and the choices for education, you need to be able to differentiate yourself from all of those schools,” said Zimmerman. “It’s ver y competitive, and yet we all kind of root for each other. It’s not like anyone is trying to steal anyone’s students. Each school kind of has its own thing. Having a brand that people recognize is necessary.” CCS was established as LAMS in 1978. The school, which added high school curriculum in 2018, began with 67 students and six teachers. “The school was started (because of ) a need for more Christian schools,” said Zimmerman. “ The schools that were open were at their max, and parents were looking for options. Parents got together and said, ‘Let’s buy land and start a school.’ They saw a need. It was a slow process, it didn’t happen overnight, but the school eventually ran out of space. Christmas Tree Sought for City Celebration The City of Lancaster, in partnership with Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), is seeking an evergreen to serve as the city’s Christmas tree in Penn Square this holiday season. Property owners with a healthy conifer at least 30 feet tall and full on all sides who plan to remove the tree are encouraged to contact the city. address, phone number, the tree’s location, and a photo. A jury of city staff and LEADS board members will select the tree. The tree selected will be cut down by the city, then transported and mounted in Penn Square shortly before Thanksgiving. The donor will be recognized for the contribution in a press release and the program at the mayor’s tree lighting. After the holidays, the tree will be transformed into mulch for city parks. The tree will be the centerpiece of the mayor’s tree lighting in November.

Church Sets Concert, Stockings For Trunk or Treat Soldiers Initiative Lancaster Church of the Underway Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, will host a concert of marimba music by classically trained percussionist, performer, and educator Grace Lea Rose Asuncion on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m. The concert is part of the church’s Starlight Tea Concert Series. No.” “ The highlight of the festival should be the works,” continued Shank. “But it will be the Lancaster businesses and filmmakers coming together. It’s really a networking event. The film industry, at its core, is collaborative.” The 60 films that the Red Rose Film Festival will feature were selected from a group of 200 submissions. Each film was viewed by five judges from a panel of 50 and then was assigned a rating from 1 to 10 based on 10 criteria. The majority of the films that will be screened at the festival received ratings of 8 or higher. Among the movies that will be presented are a film called “Adamstown,” which was produced by Lancaster-based Rwandan filmmaker Andrew Bilindabagabo, and “Keep Quiet and Forgive,” which was produced and directed by Lancaster cinematographer Sarah McClure. Many of them will experience feelings of escape. “Our biggest audiences are the filmmakers and their families,” said Shank, a resident of Marietta. “People who support the arts are typically 55 and older who want to send the elevator back down. They want to have conversations with these filmmakers, and those conversations matter. That’s what this platform provides. This is why we’re here.” T hrough his creative passion for films, Shank established the Red Rose Film Festival in 2019. “We technically copied an idea for a film festival from D ubuque, Iowa ,” said Shank. “The Julien Dubuque International Film Festival is one of the top-rated film festivals in the country. They focus more on tourism than filmmaking. I was like, ‘Why don’t we have this in Lancaster? An event that’s full of fun and excitement, said Keara Dagen, co-chair of the Baron Invitational. “This event is high-energ y! I t is amazing to witness the hard work of multiple high school marching bands come to fruition on the field,” she said. “These schools have all been working on their shows since before school s t a r te d a nd p u t m a ny hours into perfecting not only the music, but an award-winning show.” The Baron Invitational will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Manheim C e n t ra l H i g h S c h o o l ’s Rettew Stadium, 400 A d e l e Ave . , M a n h e i m . Gates are tentatively scheduled to open at 3 p.m. The exact time will be finalized closer to the event. We a re excited to host Millersville University’s marching band as an exhibition performance again this year, too! We are looking for ward to watching a college-level band perform, as our normal w e e k- t o - w e e k e x p e r i ence is with other high schools.” Food will be available to purchase at the event and will include hot dogs, walking tacos, soups, french fries and baked goods. This is the 24th year M a n h e i m C e n t ra l h a s hosted the event, and it provides a chance for the bands to hone their skills while also having fun, Dagen said. “Band members are always looking to grow their individual skills and improve their group performance,” she remarked. “Plus, after each band is done per forming , they get to watch the other bands perform.
