The Mummas Pay It Forward for Kids Like Zeke BY JEFF FALK

lancastercountymag.com Celebrating Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Since 1987.

There are many meaningful ways to memorialize a loved one who has passed. All of them are heartfelt, comforting and inspirational. But one of the most moving ways is assisting someone who is experiencing life challenges which are similar to the ones your beloved faced. Take the Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing as a great example.

“We do know it’s a good thing,” said Laurie Mumma, Zeke’s mom and one of the organizers of the benefit golf outing. “We’ve always wanted to help people, but we don’t have thousands (of dollars) to give away. There are so many different things you need for these kids; it’s just a world of expense. If we can help people, we’re just like, ‘Let’s do it.’” Recently, the Mumma family helped stage the 15th edition of See The Mummas pg 4

Meta Glasses Help People See Without Their Eyes BY JEFF FALK

Meta glasses do not help those with vision loss see better. Meta glasses are smart glasses that assist the visually impaired to overcome their challenges in alternate ways, navigate their worlds more effectively and make their lives better. “Technology can be a very helpful tool,” said Taylor Newswanger, who’s been a low vision occupational therapist at VisionCorps for 10 years. “There are a lot of low-tech things that can be helpful. But (VisionCorps is) not just about technology. We’re about people and their needs.” VisionCorps, which is located at 244 N. Queen St., Lancaster, does not sell meta glasses - they are available at the offices of local eye doctors and through large retailers like Amazon. But VisionCorps does offer training, advice and consultations about the practical applications and the uses of meta glasses. Newswanger also periodically presents meta glasses as a topic in VisionCorps’ quarterly webinar series VC Presents, which is currently available on www.youtube.com. “Meta glasses work with AI; it’s a camera and a phone,” said Newswanger. “It’s all auditory. The glasses connect to smart phones or tablets, where it gets information. It’s connecting to the internet, and it’s giving you that information. It’s like having Siri or Alexa on your face, and when it’s on your face, it can travel with you.” “You can tell the glasses to read a piece of paper for you,” See Glasses pg 8

Mu sic is a s er ies o f sounds, notes, beats and rhy thms arranged in a way that is pleasing to the ear. But music is also a combination of dozens of different genres culturally influenced by time-honored traditions, not unlike Scottish or Celtic. “We play a variety of Irish and Scottish music,” said Christy King, who’s been the musical director of the Ceili Band for five years. “ T he music uses ornamentation and rhythms that are very distinct from other music. While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians lear ning Celtic music , especially for those trained classically.” A part of the Paloma Performance Troupe, the Ceili Band is an independent musical ensemble that also supports the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. After all, what’s dancing

without music? The Ceili Band generally practices a couple of times a week, mainly at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. “Our goal is to bring musicians of all ages and musical backgrounds together to learn and enjoy Celtic music,” said King. “The band is also an opportunity for musicians to get experience performing on a stage for an audience.” The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from L ancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, f lutes and a double bass. “I think the band is unique in the wide range of ages and abilities,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is welcome to come give the band a try.” In collaboration with the dancers, the Ceili Band performs about four times a year, at venues and events

like the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Highland Presbyterian Church and the Mar yland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King, “whether you want to dust off your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to everyone around us.” The Ceili Band was formed about five years ago, around the same time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Petri School of

Irish Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a group practice with some of my students, along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”

proven what is possible when people come together,” said Sommerhoff. “Every dollar matters. Every step counts. Every act of compassion helps bridge the gap for someone who might otherwise go without.” Participants in the Lititz CROP Hunger Walk will navigate either a 1-mile or a 3-mile trek from Lititz Church of the Brethren to Lititz Springs Park through town and back to the church. Through donations, sponsorships from families and friends and money from the walkers themselves, the event is hoping to raise $5,500 for the hungry. A quarter of those funds will go to the Warwick Community Hub, while the remainder of the donations will benefit Church World Service. “Walkers of all ages are welcome,” said Sommerhoff, a resident of Lititz. “Most walkers are from Lititz, and many are from churches in our area, but everyone is welcome to walk with us. We have had children, youth and adults, including walkers over the age of 90.” According to the Warwick Community Hub, the current poverty rate in the Warwick School District is more than 35%, a rate that

ref lects the number of students who qualify for free and reduced meals. The World Health Organization estimates that nearly 10% of the world’s population faces hunger each day, partly because of climate change, poverty and conflict. “In the early years, the walk was a longer d i s t a n c e ,” s a i d S o m merhoff, “and involved larger groups of walkers from churches around Lititz. Over the years, the number of walkers and participating churches has become fewer.” October will mark the 45th anniversary of the Lititz CROP Hunger Walk. Since 1981, the local walk has raised a total of $208,517 for the nutritionally challenged. “On Oct. 25, we will celebrate the past, act in the present and walk toward a future where all are fed,” said Sommerhoff. “Lititz has been walking faithfully for 45 years. Imagine what the next 45 years could bring if we continue to walk with the same faith and determination. Let us continue to walk humbly, love mercy and do justice until hunger is no more.” For additional information, go to https://events .c rophunger walk .or g/ chw/event/lititzpa.

For the four th year, Newport Church invites the community to its Fall Fest, to be held on Sunday, Oct. 25, at the church, 656 W. Newport Road, Elm. A b o u t 1 5 0 p l aye r s and supporters participated in the golf outing, as well as a handful of generous sponsors. But he has emotions and vision, and he does get excited.” The Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing was established in 2012 to help defray the Mummas’ medical expenses and supportive costs associated with caring for Zeke. After Zeke passed in April of 2021 at the age of 17, the Mummas decided to continue conducting the golf outing and to present the proceeds to families who have similar needs. Over the course of its existence, the golf outing h a s ra i s e d m o re t h a n $150,000, and during the last six years the Mummas have blessed six different families with the proceeds. T h at mone y h a s gone toward things like housing renovations, doorway widenings, an all-terrain wheelchair, playground turf and tuition to Aaron’s Acres camps. “My husband said, ‘I think we can do a golf outing,’ and we went for it,” said Mumma, a resident of Lititz. “That’s how we started it, and we’ve been able to raise a good check every year. God put it on our hearts to keep going. Over the years, we’ve had so many people help us, we wanted to help others. It brings the community together. People just see love in progress.” Zeke Mumma suffered a brain injur y when he was eight months old and spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair. The injury also affected his digestive system and his breathing. “Zeke would laugh when you would do fast movements, and he did some Hersheypark rides,” said Mumma. “He was nonverbal; his communications were three movements. He had seizures. He loved to be read to. We were his entertainment. He would smile and giggle and laugh. He had a lot of his needs met, and he had to be patient at a point.” “We have a good peace about where he is,” concluded Mumma. “My husband and I have peace because he went before us. We were concerned we’d go before him. He is with the best healer in the universe. We are blessed that he is in Heaven. It just makes Heaven a little better to get there.”

the annual Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing at Manor Golf Club in Sinking Spring. The event raised about $6,000, proceeds that were donated to the family of 15-yearold Conestoga Valley Hig h School student Miles Brenneman, who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy. A b o u t 1 5 0 p l aye r s and supporters participated in the golf outing, as well as a handful of generous sponsors. The Brenneman family is using the money as a down payment on a handicapped-accessible van. “The goal of the Zeke Mumma Memorial Golf Outing is to help other families who have special needs kids and give them f in anc i al s u p p or t in honor of our son, Zeke,” said Mumma. “In the special needs world, it takes finances. (The donation is) a dent in the cost of a van.” “Two friends of mine nominated this family,” continued Mumma. “Miles does not eat orally. He’s in a wheelchair; he’s not walking and talking.

There are a lot of cool features, and it’s an aid to things.” VisionCorps’ next VC Presents webinar is titled “Holiday Kitchen Confidence: Cooking and Baking With Vision Loss,” and it will initially be presented from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20.
