Time For Fun And Treats
BY ANN MEAD ASH
According to Angela Stucchio, education director with Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), last year’s fall festival was exceptionally successful. “Last year, we did a fall festival with a small Trunk or Treat and outdoor activities,” recalled Stucchio. “My goal was 200 people, but we had more than 500 children and their families.”
For this year, Stucchio has rethought the event. “It will just be a Trunk or Treat to accommodate larger numbers,” she said, noting she plans to have 12 trunks line the parking lot at the church, 201 Market St., on Sunday, Oct. 30, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Attendees are welcome to wear costumes.
Among the participants Stucchio expects to provide a decorated trunk are the Lititz Borough Police Department,
the Lititz Fire Company, the Lancaster Virtual Reality Lounge, Girl Scout Troop 70536, the LUMC children’s ministry, LUMC Club 56, and the LUMC youth group. Stucchio noted that one car will have a “Sesame Street” theme and others will have a camping theme and a video game theme. Candy and prizes will be handed out. A craft
table where children can participate in a make-and-take craft will also be offered.
Door prizes will also be handed out. “When you register for the children’s ministry newsletter, your name and email goes in the bucket, and we will choose,” explained Stucchio, who noted that giveaways will include a Family
Movie Night Basket, a Breakfast Basket, and a Halloween Craft Basket.
In addition, food trucks will be on-site to offer food for purchase, including the F.B.C. Food Truck, Tasty Dogs Food Truck, the Little Cotton Cart Food Truck, and Boothy’s BBQ.
According to Stucchio, last year’s
inclement weather did not put a damper on the event. “It rained last year, and we did tables (instead of trunks),” she explained. “If it’s rainy, we will move it inside.”

When Penn State Health Lancaster Medical Center opened its doors on Oct. 3, it fulfilled a goal of the organization. “Adding Lancaster Medical Center is another step toward delivering on our promise to ensure the communities we serve are within 10 minutes of our primary care providers, 20 minutes of our specialty care and 30 minutes of our acute care,” said Joseph Frank, hospital president, East Region for Penn State Health. The medical center is located near the intersection of State Road and Harrisburg Pike in East Hempfield Township.

“One of my favorite sayings is ‘Bloom where you are planted,’” said Julie Henning, author of “A Rose in a Ditch,” published in 2019, which tells her story of learning to bloom wherever she found herself. “We cannot always change our circumstances, but we can change our responses to those circumstances to be the people God wants us to be,” said Henning.
Henning will share her story, which begins in Korea and takes her to America as the adopted daughter
of Pearl S. Buck, author of “The Good Earth,” on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club luncheon at noon at Bent Creek Country Club, 620 Bent Creek Drive, Lititz. Advance reservations are required by Friday, Oct. 28, and there is a cost to attend. To make reservations, call 717-951-0773.
Henning’s life began in South Korea. Her mother had escaped from the north and married a South Korean who was killed in the Korean War. Henning’s mother met her father, who was an American soldier, and later gave birth to Henning.

“Howl-O-Ween
And Treats” Slated Presentation To Dispel Myths
Julie Henning
“Growing up in Korea as half American and half Asian was a very difficult life in the 1950s and 1960s,” said Henning, who noted that while America is a melting pot, Korea is not. “In Korea, everybody had black hair, and I had yellow hair,” she noted. “I used to come home crying because of the teasing and ridicule.”
Bullying was not Henning’s only problem. For Henning and her mother, life was hard, as they lived in a one-room house with no electricity or running water. “I sold gum and shined shoes on the streets and helped my mom wash clothes by the creek to earn money,” recalled Henning. “We looked for free food - mushrooms, dandelions, snails, grasshoppers.”
In spite of their difficult circumstances, Henning’s mother had hope for her daughter. “She said, ‘Soonyi’which means sweet - ‘work hard in school and go to America one day.’” Henning followed her mother’s advice, and when a social worker from the Pearl S. Buck Foundation came to their town in search of Amerasians, Henning left her mother to live at the Pearl S. Buck Opportunity Center in Sosa, Korea. Hen-
ning was 13 years old. At the center, Henning studied while her friends played and slept. She was rated first of more than 600 students, but then her mother died. Henning returned home to bury her, and with no family to go to, she returned to the Buck Center, where Buck herself noted Henning’s efforts. “When (Buck) came to Korea to visit her foundation, she met with me and asked me through an interpreter, ‘How would you like to come to America to live with me as my daughter?’”
Henning did so, but when she was 19, Buck died. “I felt like everything crumbled, but God did not leave me there,” said Henning, who was adopted by a couple who were had always believed God would send them a child. “God’s hand has been with me every step of the way,” said Henning, who added that at the Nov. 2, event, “I will share about my journey to becoming a Christian.” Henning has spoken at venues in America, Korea, and China, and in September of 2020, she was honored with the Pearl S. Buck International Woman of the Year award. “I felt very humbled by that,” shared Henning.

The new hospital is an acute care facility, and it will offer both inpatient and outpatient care from its sixstory, 341,000-square-foot location that features 132 private patient beds. “Lancaster Medical Center will have inpatient services, including a cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, general surgery, labor and delivery, and complete medical and surgical capabilities,” Frank noted. “It will offer outpatient services such as an Emergency Department, imaging services and physician offices.”
Unique features at the facility include a “hybrid operating room,” Frank said, explaining that this state-ofthe-art design is an advanced procedural space that includes a traditional operating room (OR) and medical imaging devices. “Having advanced imaging and surgical technologies available in the same space makes it easier on the
patient,” he remarked. “Our teams will be able to give them a single visit to the hybrid OR as opposed to multiple procedures. It allows us to do more advanced interventions in the operating room.”
While Frank emphasized that the most important feature of Lancaster Medical Center is its team of caregivers, he detailed design features that reflect the organization’s commitment to a healthy work environment.
Departments and units are designed to promote staff collaboration and efficient workflow that reduces steps and provides quick access to supplies when minutes matter, he said. “A state-of-theart café with indoor and outdoor seating provides healthy dining in a soothing atmosphere,” Frank shared.
“Meditation areas, abundant windows with panoramic views, art and décor designs
and the walking trail further promote well-being for staff and visitors.”
Construction on the hospital began in 2020. “Being able to design a hospital from scratch gives you many opportunities to incorporate design and technology into an exceptional patient experience,” Frank said. “We’ve planned so we are able to provide state-of-the-art technology for the community needs now and in the future as our community grows. We’ve engaged our physician partners in the technology choices just as our nurses are engaged in designing our care. And we’ve added expanded consumer technologies like inroom digital patient education to not only provide the highest level of quality care, but also easy accessibility, comfort and convenience.”
Projected population growth was an important factor in choosing the site of the new medical center, he said. “We know that Lancaster County is growing, and along
