To Share Is Human, to Give Divine BY JEFF FALK
It’s almost like the old chicken and the egg routine. What’s unclear is if Lancaster County is so generous because there are so many great causes out there, or if there are so many great causes because Lancaster County residents are so altruistic. “Lancaster County is a frugal county,” said David Kieffer, pastor of Ephrata Reformed Presbyterian Church and president of Faithful Give. “Residents are generous, but they’re not foolish with their donations. They want good return on their investments. T hey want to donate to causes that are aligned with their values. They want to steward their finances well, and Faithful Give exists to help with that.” Faithful Give is one of Lancaster County’s most far-reaching and well-organized giving campaigns. The upcoming Faithful Give features a pair of interactive in-person October events, but 90 percent of the donations received by the facilitating agent comes through online gifts. The received donations are distributed to nonprofits, missions and causes that are physically located in Lancaster County and benefit its citizens. “Faithful Give is designed to connect generous donors to kingdom causes in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “But Faithful Give is not just a financial giving event. It’s a celebratory advocacy event. Every ministry knows their needs and opportunities better than we do. On our website, each of the participating See Faithful pg 4

Cabaret is a French word. Translated, it means a small room, a little tavern, or a shop that sells spirits. Reji Woods translates it as a lively stage performance, an energetic floor show that features dancing, comedy and singing. “Audiences can expect a fun time full of joy and

exuberance, excellent voices and killer musicians,” said Woods. “We truly love to connect with our audiences and raise the roof, and boy oh boy do we ever. Audiences are everything. They are why we do what we do, and without them Reji Woods Productions wouldn’t exist. Providing fun, quality entertainment is why I started this, and it’s all I have ever wanted to do.” Woods is the executive director, creative director and driving force behind Reji Woods Productions, a local cabaret-style entertainment company. In addition to cabarets tailored to audiences’ preferences, Reji Woods Productions produces youth programming, musicals, plays, showcases, concerts and revues. “I believe that entertainment brings us together in a very divided world,” said Woods. “Music shows us our commonalities as a people and helps promote emotional response. It honestly is the universal language. Theater can entertain and educate because we as theater performers hold a mirror to society, showing the current state of things while offering hope for a better tomorrow. Dance can bring awe like nothing can, with the simple
use of the human body. All these forms of performing arts are storytelling at their core and can offer audiences the chance to escape the harsh realities of life, if just for a moment. The performing arts can change lives.” Reji Woods Productions works with and collaborates with a diverse group of performers and artists from the Susquehanna Valley and beyond. Some are professionals, some are students and some are co-workers, but Woods considers all of them friends. “Many people know me as a performer in the area, and much of that work has been done under the Reji Woods Productions banner,” said Woods, a resident of Ephrata. “So, I hope that translates to knowing the company. I think what they should know and expect from Reji Woods Productions is that every show is programmed by me and filled with genuine love, care and a desire to give our audiences a good time. We have fun on that stage every time, and audiences should feel it in their seats.” Reji Woods Productions, which is funded primarily through performance contracts, produces
as many as 10 shows each year. Those performances are staged at cultural series, churches, performing arts centers, dinner theaters, retirement communities and private venues. “Our goal is to bring quality, theme-driven cabaret experiences to the Lancaster County area,” said Woods, “all while providing a variety of entertainment options for our community. We love to bring positive energy and joy.” Reji Woods Productions was born from a solo cabaret produced by Woods in 2015. Since then, it has realized a fair share of success by adopting a people-first, community-oriented attitude. “The best part of Reji Woods Productions is the people,” said Woods. “Whether it’s the people I share the stage with or the audiences we entertain, it’s all about connection, and that’s the best part. My favorite thing to do, however, is to perform. Singing and connecting with an audience is the lifeblood of my existence. Since I was 9 years old, singing has brought me immeasurable joy.” For more information, visit www.rejiwoodsproductions.com.

ministries has a page that tells what the money will go toward. “We really want to expand people’s understanding of generosity,” added Kieffer. “Generosity is not just about giving your money; it’s about giving your heart and your talents. We just want to connect people and celebrate that. (Faithful Give) really emphasizes the versatility of the Christian community.” From midnight on Sunday, Oct. 18, to midnight on Tuesday, Oct. 20, interested individuals can direct financial donations to Faithful Give’s general fund by going to www.faithfulgive.org/donate. People can also donate funds in person at Faithful Give’s prayer breakfast from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 19, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, or at Faithful Give’s Celebration Expo from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. “The breakfast is a wonderful opportunity to learn about all that God is doing in Lancaster County,” said Kieffer. “Most of the kingdom causes are represented, and you can learn about their ministries, know those people and pray for them. One of the neat things we’ve seen is the networking that has come out of it. The Celebration Expo is a full, family event. Families get a chance to spend a night out. Last year, my favorite thing was
seeing how many families came out to the expo and learned about the missions.” This year, more than 150 Lancaster County-associated ministries, nonprofits and social service organizations have registered to be a part of Faithful Give. The funds that they receive allow those organizations to provide broader, deeper and more impactful services and programs, as well as to reach more individuals in need. “They are people from organizations who love God and love Lancaster County,” said Kieffer, a resident of Manheim Township. “They’re people who make Lancaster County a great place to live and raise a family. They’re people who have inherited a great legacy and want to pass that legacy on to the next generation.” Following some exploratory research, the initial Faithful Give event was staged in 2023. Over the last three years, the fundraising and giving initiative has raised more than $4.4 million for the underresourced. “Every year we’ve set a goal and God has surpassed it. This year, we’ll see what God will do,” said Kieffer. “When we started, I wasn’t sure it was going to fly. Certainly, God has done more than we have asked, thought or imagined. It has served our community. It’s provided connection, advocacy and celebration. It’s just been a blessing.”
Hernia Screenings Available UPMC Lititz will offer free hernia screenings from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and Tuesday, Oct. 20, on the hospital campus at 1500 Highlands Drive, Lititz. Hernias occur when an organ or other tissue pushes through muscle or connective tissue, often resulting in an out-of-place lump that can be seen or felt. Hernias affect millions of people annually, and while they are not an urgent issue, they can be painful and lead to health complications, including blocked bowels or lost blood supply
to certain tissues. At the screening events, attendees may meet one-on-one with UPMC general surgeons Dr. Margaret Ahrens, Dr. Hiep Phan, and Dr. David Vaughn. Participants will receive a confidential assessment and learn about available treatment options. The surgeons will also perform demonstrations of a surgical robot during the event. The screenings are free of charge, but registration is required at https://tinyurl.com/ herniascreenings.

“ These funds help us continue investing in our students, programs and the Christ-centered education and community we provide for the families we serve,” said Jones, a resident of East Petersburg. “My favorite part is seeing so many different parts of our community co m e to g e t h e r i n o n e place. There’s something really special about watching our campus filled with families spending time together.” About 92% of the school’s funding is derived from tuition revenue. The remainder of the funding results from charitable giving, fundraising and the generosity of donors aligned with the school’s mission. “The cost of educating our students is more than
we charge in tuition,” said Jones, “so charitable support through fundraisers and planned giving provide necessar y funding for now and future needs.” Established in 1978, Lititz Christian School cur rently ser ves more than 500 students and children, from infants to 12th-graders, across all of its programs and at three campus locations. “Lititz Christian School par tners with families to provide a nurturing, Christ- centered educational community where ever y student, from i n fa nc y t h ro u g h co m mencement, is known, loved, supported and discipled to be a follower of Jesus,” said Jones. “One of the things that makes LC unique is the opportunity to serve families through so many stages of their children’s lives. We c a re d e e p l y a b o u t academic growth, but our mission goes beyond academics. We want students to grow in their faith, character, relationships and preparation for life beyond the classroom.” For additional information, go to www .lititzchristian.net.
