TheFacebook event page for the Apoca-Lititz 5K Run/Walk fittingly proclaims “It’s Baaaaaaaaaack!” However, Rebecca Branle, executive director of Venture Lititz, notes that the event is toned down from when it originated years ago as the “Zombie Run.” “We wanted to make it more family friendly,” noted Branle, who added that while costumes are encouraged, they need not be scary. “You can dress up as anything,” she said.
“ We have had sweet, silly, and cute, as well as scary, (costumes).”
The 2022 Apoca-Lititz 5K will be held rain or shine on Saturday, Oct. 29, beginning at 9 a.m., with day-of registration from 7 to 8:30 a.m. This year’s race will begin at Stoll & Wolfe Distillery, 35 N. Cedar St., Lititz.
“(Stoll & Wolfe) is in the center of things, so we can have a nice safe start,” said Branle, who noted the run will take Kleine Lane to North Water Street to North Oak Street, where the route will take the Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail Trail
to a turn-around point. The route has been called “beginner friendly.”
“There’s a virtual option,” noted Branle. “We want to give people that option, but we feel good about this because we are outside doing something healthy.”
Branle said that because the event has been moved to Stoll & Wolfe, special prizes will be offered
to the winners. “That will be fun,” said Branle. “(Stoll & Wolfe) will be providing prizes to the top overall finishers with alternative prizes (for those who prefer to avoid alcohol),” she said. “We encourage folks to hang out and have some food at Stoll & Wolfe,” she added. “They are a family business in town we want to lift up.” In addition to prizes for
overall top male and female finishers, prizes will be awarded to the top three runners in eight age groups. Prizes will also be given to children and adults for the best costume, the scariest costume, and the best group costume.
Runners and walkers who wish to take part are encouraged to register at www.pretzelcitysports.com by
midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 26, to receive a free T-shirt designed by local writer and illustrator Bill Dussinger. Packet pickup will be on Friday, Oct. 28, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Hotel Rock Lititz, 50 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz, or at beginning at 7 a.m. at the event. Questions may be directed to kim@hotelrocklititz.com or 717-964-0174.

“It’s really just a fun night for our supporters to gather and celebrate the program in a way that lifts up our girls and makes it possible for more to participate,” said Sarah Yohe, director of community engagement with Girls on The Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon, of the Kickin’ Up Kindness event that raises funds for GOTR scholarships.

Simon Ababou, fitness director for the Lititz recCenter, has noticed a change in the ages of individuals using the fitness center. “More youths are using the fitness center and the strength training area,” said Ababou, who has noted close to 50 students at a time in the area. “Free weights are a trend.” In keeping with the popularity of free weights and to encourage youths to train safely, Ababou conceived of the
inaugural Youth Bench Press Competition for area students ages 14 to 18. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, with weigh-in from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., and lifting starting at 9:20 a.m. To keep the competition fair, students will be divided into categories determined by the amount of weight lifted divided by the contestant’s bodyweight. The best of three successful lifts will determine the lifter’s performance. Three male and three female winners will receive trophies.

“We encourage people to come into our church, check out us, share a meal and have some fellowship,” said Gail Ruhl, describing the annual chicken potpie dinner at Ruhl’s Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22, and this year, it will feature “A Night With Noah” after the dinner.
The meal will be available for sitdown service or to go from 4 to 6 p.m. or until sold out, Ruhl said. The menu will include chicken potpie,
green beans, coleslaw, applesauce, homemade desserts and assorted beverages. There are separate prices for adults and for children. Children age 5 and under may eat for free.
Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support upcoming mission trips. This year’s event will be held at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Oct. 14, beginning at 6:30 p.m. It will be presented by PNC Bank.
The dress code for the event is casual, and Yohe recommended wearing jeans with a splash of pink. Dinner will consist of a buffet featuring a selection of foods from Rocky’s BBQ. A campfire will be located on-site for attendees to enjoy. A live band will play bluegrass music for attendees’ listening and dancing pleasure, and a silent auction will be held. According to Yohe, the silent auction will feature gift certificates from local stores and restaurants, along with experiences, such as trips. “LOA Orthodontics has donated a full orthodontic treatment,” said Yohe, who added that Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster (OAL) has donated their skybox at

More than 50% of girls receive financial assistance to take part in GOTR programs, and the Kickin’ Up Kindness event is a major fundraiser to help meet scholarship needs.
GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills.

This is the first time the church is combining the dinner with an event afterward. “We haven’t done a dual event like this before, but we’re hoping families and individuals will stick around for Noah’s ark,” she stated.
“A Night With Noah” will feature activities in multiple locations throughout the church, all based on the story of Noah’s ark from the book of Genesis. “It’s going to start off with a short, animated video about Noah’s ark,” said John Renninger, who is the event coordinator. “Then, we’ll go into who Noah was as a person, talk about his family and so on.” Additional stations will include the opportunity to measure the distance of the ark’s length and width, play games and hear Bible verses related to the story of Noah.
“I have somebody who is going to be Noah, and then I have someone who will be speaking as the voice of God,” Renninger noted, adding that a backdrop of Noah’s ark will also be set up, along with animal face masks as a photo station.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a stuffed animal along for the event, and Renninger noted that the activities are geared for people of all ages. “Any child through grade school and middle school can do these activities and enjoy them,” he remarked. “Older kids can help some of the younger children. It’s going to be a good, wholesome family event with a lot of things to do. It’s a way to get the whole family involved.”

Ababou has created a list of rules, which include allowable clothing, the type of grip that may be used on the bench press, and how judging and determining the winner will be governed. “These guidelines and rules show (contestants) how to bench press properly,” explained Ababou. “We want to show (participants) how to compete with each other and have fun,” he added, noting that he hopes to see as many as 25 students take part.
According to Ababou, the three
most popular weight-training exercises are bench pressing, squats, and deadlifts. “If I have success with this (bench press competition), I might add a squat competition in the winter and a deadlift in the spring,” mused Ababou.
There is a nominal fee to take part in the competition, which is discounted for rec center members. Youths who are interested in competing may contact Ababou at simonababou@lititzrec.com or call 717-626-5069, ext. 239.

“We have had a Fall Fest for many years,” said Annette Kroeck, who handles admissions and marketing for Neffsville Nursing and Rehabilitation. Kroeck explained that the organization switched to holding an outdoor Trunk or Treat a few years ago due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We feel it’s time to get
back inside and be face-to-face with residents,” said Kroeck. “It’s what they need.” She added that Neffsville is still reaching out to people in the Manheim Township community and hoping to get more organizations to join in the event. Neffsville Nursing and Rehabilitation, 2829 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, will hold its annual Fall Fest Health Fair on Friday, Oct. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Online SNAP Program Now Available At Stauffers
Stauffers of Kissel Hill Fresh Foods stores have officially begun accepting Supplement Nutritional Assistant Program (SNAP) online payments from their customers to use on their online grocery store.
Stauffers of Kissel Hill’s ecommerce platform, Rosie, enables the store to accept SNAP online payments from households that rely on Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) benefits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) recently expanded the SNAP program to online platforms.
SNAP, formerly known as the food stamp program, provides food purchasing assistance for families living in the U.S. SNAP is a federal program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, under the FNS, though benefits are distributed by each U.S. state’s Division of Social Services or Children and Family Services.
Over 40 million Americans estimated to have participated in SNAP annually in the 21st century. More than twothirds of SNAP participants are families with children, while a third are households with senior citizens or people with disabilities.

local businesses; and a hospice will sponsor trunks. “There will be a lot of candies and goodies,” she said. Carnival-type games, such as cornhole and a ring toss, will be available to play. During the week prior to the event, staff and resident families will paint pumpkins, and those will be judged during the fest.
Members of the Manheim Township Police Department will be at the fest performing car seat safety checks, and Kroeck hopes to hold a blood drive during the event.
Food trucks, including Pepper Pot from Harrisburg, will be on-site to provide food items for purchase.
Kroeck pointed out that the event will be held rain or shine. “(If it rains,) we will just move the activities inside and use tables instead of trunks,” she said. Readers who would like to learn more may search for “Neffsville Nursing and Rehab” on Facebook or visit https://neffsvillerehab.com.
