Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters - who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood. Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011. She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013. In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.” Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancy-related breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday. See Thrive And Grit pg 4
Thrive and Grit is just one of many area organizations supporting the fight against breast cancer. Here’s a sampling of some of the other local groups that are fighting back against the disease and supporting breast cancer patients and survivors:
Diana’s Dreamers: Determined to Defeat Breast Cancer Established in honor of Diana Denenberg Durand, this endowment has been set up through the Millersville University Foundation to fund a national campaign to raise awareness among college-age women and men about breast cancer and breast health in general. www.millersville.edu/nursing/ breast-cancer-awarenessprogram/ dianas-dreamers.php
Sisters Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello (middle) and Megan Sauder Ralston (right) started Thrive and Grit to create awareness of breast cancer in women under age 40, donate toward research, and support others. Megan was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 30, just nine months after giving birth to her son, Bryce (left), and passed away in 2018 at age 31.

In describing the concept behind this year’s HOPE Breakfast, Brian Boycan, regional representative with HOPE International, turned to a parable. In the parable, Christ tells of a man who is
hosting a banquet and invited many guests who refused to attend. The man then sent his servants into the streets to invite any who would come and join in the celebration. “Christ said when you have a banquet … invite those who can’t pay you back,” noted Boycan. See HOPE Breakfast pg 3

“That’s what we’re called to do. We’re not in it for people to recognize us or return the favor. We want to help folks that nobody else has believed in.” HOPE International, which was founded in 1998, is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that strives to empower clients through basic business training to help them start their own businesses. “Investing in Dreams” is the theme of this year’s buffet-style breakfast, which will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 22, from 7 to 9 a.m. As it was last year, this year’s breakfast will be held on the same day as the Extraordinary Give, Lancaster County’s largest day of online giving. Peter Greer, president and CEO of HOPE, will speak on the topic of “Investing in Dreams.” Greer received a degree in international business from Messiah College. He also holds a master’s in political and economic development from the Harvard Kennedy School. He has worked internationally as a microfinance adviser. He is the author of several books, including “Mission Drift.” In addition to Greer’s talk, the breakfast will feature a panel discussion, a presenta-
tion Boycan noted that HOPE has wanted to hold for some time. “We will have a panel of three regional kingdom-minded entrepreneurs who will answer the question ‘Who believed in you?’” explained Boycan. “Most successful business people didn’t get there by themselves.” The three entrepreneurs will be Andrew Samuel, founder, chairman, and CEO of LinkBank; David Millary, president of EDUPlus International Inc.; and Crystal Weaver, Lancaster-based entrepreneur and cofounder and COO of The Commons Co. and co-owner of Passenger Coffee Roasters, Prince Street Café, and Blue Line Lancaster. Boycan believes the panel discussion will exemplify HOPE’s mission. “That’s what those people (who believed in) the entrepreneurs (did for them),” he said. “They invested in them. That’s what we do. We reach out to people who are underserved and marginalized and vulnerable, and we believe in them.” HOPE provided $5,000 in loans in its first year of existence. HOPE had loaned out $161 million by 2008, and in the last 10 years, $1.36 billion has been loaned. HOPE now serves 965,000 clients in 16 countries.
“I did the math,” noted Boycan. “If all of our clients stood hand-in-hand, it would take us from Lancaster to Jacksonville, Fla.” Further, Boycan noted, “If you laid $1.36 billion dollar bills end-to-end, they would go around the world five times.” Boycan thinks those who attend the breakfast will have opportunities to learn from the experience. “We think it will be an inspiring morning,” he said. “All of us have the opportunity to believe in others where some may not see their potential. That’s what HOPE is about, and (at the breakfast), we hope to inspire people to believe in what we’re doing.” Boycan recalled that the 2018 breakfast was held on a morning when the area received a surprise snowfall of six inches. This year, he hopes for better weather and to see 300 or more people attend the event. Readers who would like to learn more about the breakfast may visit www.hope international.org/lancasterbreakfast. There is no cost to attend the breakfast; however, reservations must be made by Friday, Nov. 15. Individuals may register by calling 717464-3220, ext. 554, or emailing Jbeachy@hopeinternational.org

“Understanding Trauma: Finding Help and Comfort.” Members of the organizing committee include Cathi Myers, Gwen Didden, Flo Rebert, and speakers Freeman Chakara and Dannel Wissler. Chakara, a board-certified neuropsychologist and the head of Providence Behavioral Health, is also a professor at Lancaster Bible College. Wissler is a licensed professional counselor who works with Providence and is part of the Lancaster County Critical Incident Stress Management Team. “The focus this year is on trauma and related disorders,” said Chakara. “We thought we would address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which has been in the national conversation with regard to veterans and its close cousin, acute stress disorder.” Chakara explained that he plans to discuss the weight of the issue and, based on current research, how the problems associated with stress disorders can be managed. “(This event is) an invitation to think about this with people of faith,” said Chakara. “(To explore) what … Scripture says about the aspects of suffering and trauma.” Wissler noted that the discussion will range beyond the coverage stress disorders in veterans have garnered to include first responders, police, and events that affect the larger community. prayer room and display area will be open prior to the service as well as after. “We have had the prayer room normally open just at the end of the (event),” she noted. “(This year), we will have it at the beginning as well as the end to give more opportunity for people to pray.” Some of the Scripture for this year’s event is from 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which reads, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.” Myers explained that a special station will be available to bring added meaning to this verse. “We will have … a basin of water, and we will have disappearing paper,” she explained. “People can write words (associated with) things they have suffered, and when they put (the paper) in the water, they can watch the suffering dissolve, symbolizing how God can help us work through the trauma and suffering.” There is no cost to attend the service, and registration is not necessary. Barshinger Cancer Institute to thank them for the wonderful care she received. Her family and Thrive and Grit were able to make her idea a reality last December, and Jacquelyn hopes to repeat that event in the future. Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn. Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to. “She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.” To learn more about supporting the mission of Thrive and Grit, readers may visit www.thriveandgrit.org.

Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance. “She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.” Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap. On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith. She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through

Dance Company To Hold Shoe Drive Laurel Dance Company will conduct a shoe drive fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 13, from noon to 5 p.m. to raise funds for proper studio equipment and scholarships for students. Participants may donate gently worn, used and new shoes at the studio at 514 E. Main St., Ephrata. Laurel Dance Company will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected, as Funds2Orgs will issue a check for the collected shoes. Those dollars will benefit the studio needs and allow Laurel Dance to provide scholarships to students who would otherwise be unable to participate in its dance programs. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise (small business) partners. Funds2Orgs works with microentrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house the entrepreneurs’ families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti earned enough to send to her son to law school. For more information about Laurel Dance Company, readers may visit www.laureldance.org.

The Lancaster Civil War Round Table (LCWRT) will meet on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Scott Mingus will present “Targeted Tracks: The Cumberland Valley Railroad in the Civil War, 1861-1865.” The Civil War was the first conflict in which railroads played a major role, and the Cumberland Valley Railroad (CVRR) is a story that remains little known. The CVRR played an important strategic role by connecting Hagerstown, Md., to Harrisburg. Because of its proximity to major cities in the Eastern Theater, it was an enticing target for Confederate leaders. “Targeted Tracks” is grounded on the railway’s voluminous reports; the letters and diaries of local residents, as well as Union and Confederate soldiers; official reports; and newspaper accounts. Mingus is an author, a tour guide, a patented scientist, and a history buff based near York. LCWRT programs are free and open to the public. For more information, readers may call Micky at 717-940-7411, email lancastercivilwarroundtable@gmail.com, or visit www.lancastercivilwarroundtable.org.

Forsythe again led the team in assists with 24 while Zook had nine kills and two blocks and Myer recorded six aces and nine digs. Warwick traveled to Cedar Crest on Thursday where coach Jeff Dietrich had to change things up a bit when Forsythe took an injury early in the closely contested 16-25, 25-23, 26-28, 23-25 loss. “We went to an alternate 6-2 lineup that we had been experimenting with that has Libby Smith, a junior, and Emma Remaly, a sophomore, setting and playing all the way around,” stated Dietrich. “The result was some of the most inspired volleyball we have seen all season with each of the girls in the lineup stepping up into new roles, and playing harder than they have all season.” Despite the sudden change in play, Warwick was two points away from forcing a fifth game after scratching Staff photo out a tough win in the second and Warriors Lauren Lefever (24) and Elise Balmer go up to challenge also losing by only two in the third. the shot by Eastern’s Emma Dosch during Warwick’s 3-1, nonThese are all things that has Dietrich league loss to the host Golden Knights last Monday. optimistic about his squad. “The girls continue to show progress on offense and defense. Warwick’s passing game was held to 113 yards with quarterback Joey McCracken only completing 11 of 33 attempts with no touchdowns. McCracken was the leading rusher for the Warriors as he gained 47 yards on nine carries while Colton Miller ran 19 time for 41 yards and Warwick’s lone touchdown of the game. Sandwiched between two Blue Streak scoring drives of 80 and 70 yards, respectively, Warwick’s opening possession resulted in a three and out before the offense found some traction on the second drive of the night. In that possession, the Warriors marched 66 yards on 13 plays, but turned the ball over on downs on the Manheim Township 18-yard line. The Blue Streaks then needed only seven plays to go 82 yards for another touchdown and a commanding 21-0 lead at halftime. Warwick received the second half

The Warwick defense, however, recovered a fumble and eventually capitalized when Miller rumbled four yards into the end zone to make it 21-7. Rachel Bonner (6th, 23:57), Sophie Brandwene (7th, 23:58), Alexa Ovalle (8th, 24:56), and Emily Beale (11th, 25:37) finished out the scoring for the Warriors with Clara Ford (12th, 26:37), Leeann Runkle (13th, 26:57), and Kendall Eby (14th, 28:09) finishing in

Bomberger shot a 46 on the front with three pars and three double bogies but improved a bit on the back where he shot a 43 while only recording one par with a double and one triple bogey as well. CROSS COUNTRY Warwick’s boys were still in the hunt in Section One following last week’s tri meet with Ephrata and Lebanon as they took both races and were alone in third place at 5-1 behind Hempfield (7-0) and Cedar Crest (7-1). The Warriors beat the Mounts, 16-47, as well as the Cedars, 25-31. It was a back-and-forth affair involving Lebanon as each team traded scoring positions until it was too late for the Cedars to catch up. first half and again in the second to seal the deal while Morgan recorded three saves in goal. Chloe Zook got things rolling when she found a way past Ali Quinn in the 16th minute to put Warwick ahead 1-0 and then in the 74th minute Mary Kate Bomberger added some insurance with her own score for the 2-0 final. BOYS’ SOCCER A late loss on a goal in overtime versus Manheim Township (7-1) on Friday dropped Warwick (6-2) one more game behind the Blue Streaks in Section One with only two more games remaining on the schedule. Earlier in the week the Warriors defeated Conestoga Valley (2-6) 3-2 at home. The Buckskins took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Andrew Wahba in the 28th minute and then made it 2-0 when Richard ValverdeGomez got by Warwick keeper Boston Libhart in the 48th minute. Undaunted, Warwick scored three goals in the half to pull out the come-from-behind victory. Jacob Smith answered ValverdeGomez in the 50th minute before a CV blunder tied the game at 2-2 and then Andrew Schwartz hit the game winner in the 70th minute. The Warwick defense did its job by keeping the Buckskins off the board through the majority of the second half while Libhart recorded three saves. Warwick had nine shots on goal to CV’s five and also enjoyed a 7-4 corner kick advantage. In the loss to the Blue Streaks, it was Trey George who gave Warwick the early lead when he scored in the 13th minute to make it 1-0 heading into the second half, a score that held up until with less than a minute remaining, Colton Pierson was awarded a penalty kick. With 51 seconds on the clock his shot rocketed into the lower right corner just under a diving Libhart to make it 1-1 and sent the game into overtime. Shawn Larroza then hit the game winner in the 94th minute.

Memorial Flags Sought At Cemetery ceased loved one regardless of where the veteran is buried. The cemetery’s Memorial Council invites the public to become involved in the Avenue of Flags program by donating their family’s interment flag and allowing the Memorial Council to fly it on the Avenue of Flags. Of the 135 national cemeteries, Indiantown Gap and a smaller one in South Dakota are known as the only ones presenting this style of the Avenue of Flags from the beginning of May until shortly after Veterans Day in November. Every flag is inspected by the weekly inspection teams that take down and replace weather-worn flags, sometimes at the rate of 90 to 100 flags per month. Weatherworn flags are then properly retired, and their ashes are placed in the bottom of a standard grave before a veteran’s casket is placed. Anyone who would like to donate an interment flag may drop it off at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery’s Administration Building (the building with the barn silo) on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. There will also be two collection locations set up on Saturday, Oct. 12, to accept
donated flags to the Avenue of Flags presentation. Memorial Council member Althea Cirillo will collect flags at The Bridge Faith Community, 10 Kauffman Road (Route 934), Annville, from 9 a.m. until noon. Bob Hauser will collect flags at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery from noon until 2 p.m. Readers may also contact Hauser at marinedadbob@yahoo.com if they cannot visit either of the collection locations that day. Boy Scout troops, VFWs, American Legions and other organizations that perform flag retirement ceremonies are encouraged not to retire flags but to donate them to the Memorial Council so those flags can be flown in final tribute at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Members of the public may also consider making a financial donation to the Memorial Council. Funds go toward purchasing the aluminum flag staffs for the flags or toward the annual purchase of the full set of state and territorial flags. For more information, visit http://igncmc.webs.com. Questions may be sent to Hauser at marinedadbob@yahoo.com.

Hundreds of memorial flags are needed to replace the weatherworn flags used in the Avenue of Flags presentation and to fill in the newly expanded burial sections at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville. The Avenue of Flags presentation at this national cemetery currently is a display of more than 550 USA interment (casket/memorial) flags attached to 20-foot staffs placed along the driveways of the cemetery. With the new grave section expansion, the Flags-Up event in May of 2020 will initially need at least 660 interment flags to complete the display and flag donations continuing through the year to maintain a supply of replacement interment flags. Specifically, an interment flag is the flag presented to the surviving family member at a military honors funeral. The Department of Veterans Affairs has a strict policy stating only interment flags are permitted to be flown on the Avenue of Flags. Through the years, many families have donated their flags to be flown on the Avenue of Flags at this national cemetery as a tribute to their de-
