expressing themselves otherwise. It teaches the importance of work ethic, accountability, dedication and responsibility. It teaches the importance of working as a team, being a part of something bigger than oneself.” Located at 620 Paxton Place, Lititz, at Kissel Hill Commons, Lititz Academy of Dance is celebrating its 25th year of influencing young lives, a quarter-century of making the Lititz area a better place to live.
Twice now, Travis Jankowski has made the best out of a major league baseball opportunity. In each instance, putting others ahead of himself has played a huge role in his success. “Everyone had always said to me, ‘You’d make a good coach one day,’” said Jankowski. “Up until 2021, I was like, ‘I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t see it.’ I was 29 going on 30, and it was a pivotal point in my career.” “I started thinking, ‘I never had a veteran take me under his wing,’” continued Jankowski. “‘I’m actually going to care about someone else more than myself.’ After a while, I was like ‘Huh, this is kind of cool; it’s kind of fulfilling. It’s time I made this game more about others than myself.’” Jankowski is in his first season as the Texas Rangers’ first-base coach. In addition to his in-game duties of keeping players on their toes, Jankowski teaches base-running, footwork and outfield defense. Making his transition to coaching a smooth one is the fact that Jankowski is less than a year removed from an 11-year playing career. He’s also only 35, and he spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with Texas, where he played with some of the current Rangers players. T he R angers were 74-76 through the first 150 games of their 2026 season. “Coaching is relationships,” said Jankowski, a 2009 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School.

Dance is an art form. It’s restorative. It requires athleticism and can be a development enhancer. “The gift of dance is quite a gift,” said Lisa Kalinowski, the founder and artistic director of Lititz Academy of Dance (LAD). “Dance is such a beautiful art. It is therapeutic, and it fosters self-expression - sometimes with individuals who have a hard time

Alissa Bergstresser is Harry’s m o m a n d t h e m a t r i a rc h o f the Bergstresser family. She is uniquely qualified for that role by her work as a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP), some of which is performed at UPMC’s Lititz campus. “Because (Harry’s) the oldest, we haven’t known parenthood without this,” said Alissa, who’s been a CRNP for a total of 12 years. “I think it has made me a more understanding and flexible nurse practitioner. My husband (Paul) has ended up being home more with the children than he intended.” “We’re now more moment to moment,” continued Alissa. “We

there are walking tours discussing the region’s Underground Railroad history, a film screening, a wildlife animal rehab program to inform folks on what to do if they find an injured animal, rail trail bike rides and lots of hikes,” she said. A dditional activities include r iver paddling and boat tours, overnight backpacking trips, nature journaling and field sketching workshops, yoga and a mushroom identification walk. Evening programming includes a keynote dinner on Friday at John Wright Restaurant and a Saturday social at Columbia Kettle Works, which is brewing a special beer for the weekend, with proceeds benefiting KTA. “ K e y s to n e H i k i n g & Outdoor Weekend invites folks to get outside and explore the Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape in Lancaster and York counties,” Prisby said. “The Susquehanna is one of the oldest rivers in the world, and it has played a key role in shaping the region’s history, identity and landscape.” KTA has held a fall hiking weekend since its inception in 1956. This is the third year the organization has organized a weekend of activities beyond hiking in an effort to welcome more people outdoors. Prisby explained that Pennsylvania has eight designated Conservation Landscapes, including lands owned by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. The Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape is roughly the five miles on either side of the Susquehanna River in Lancaster and York counties. “ T h i s i s o u r s e co n d time in the Susquehanna Riverlands Conservation Landscape, and the decision to return largely was based on enthusiasm from program partners we worked with in 2024, asking to bring the event back to the region,” Prisby remarked. “When the event was here in 2024, there were great reviews from attendees and those that offered activities during the weekend.” Based in Harrisburg , KTA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to building, maintaining and

protecting hiking trails across Pennsylvania while promoting responsible use of the state’s natural resources. “If you’ve been hiking for a while, there’s a good chance you’ve walked down a trail that Keystone Trails Association has helped maintain,” Prisby said. “If you’re new to hiking, we love welcoming folks out on trails with us and helping people find others to get outside with.” Adding a fourth day to the event this year offers participants an opportunity to come early and take part in hands-on stewardship events or spend a night
backpacking on the MasonDixon Trail. People are invited to come for one or all four days of the festivities, and about half of the activities are appropriate for families with children. Details of each activity note if the event is good for children, accessible or dog friendly, Prisby said. Registration is required for all events, and she noted that events fill up quickly, so early registration is encouraged. Registration will close on Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 8 a.m. For a full list of activities, registration information and more, visit www.kta -hike.org/khow2026.html.

“I am very grateful for this milestone,” said Kalinowski. “It’s 25 years of blood, sweat and tears, of pirouettes and kick lines, of laughter and love, of friendship and family. Twenty-five years of dance.” From humble beginnings, LAD was established in 2001. Kalinowski didn’t initially set out to form a dance school; a seed was planted and it grew organically. “I was actually teaching private lessons in my home, and it just kind of took off,” said Kalinowski, a resident of Manheim Township. “One day my husband came home from work and our living room was filled with parents, and we knew we needed to find a dance home. The rest is history. “Dance evolves, so we have to evolve with it, and it’s been incredible.” continued Kalinowski. “I started this studio with myself as the sole teacher. Today, there are nine of us senior instructors, and all but one grew up through our studio. We’ve all been a family for a very long time, and I am so grateful for each of these beautiful souls. They are such gifts to our students, and of course to me.”

Over those years, LAD has positively served more than 1,000 dancers, mainly from Lancaster County, between the ages of 5 and 18. LAD instructs students in the dance disciplines of ballet, jazz, lyrical, pointe, modern, hip hop and musical theater. “We have had many dancers who have continued dancing in college as dance majors, dance minors, dancing in companies or on collegiate dance teams,” said Kalinowski. “We have alumni who now perform, teach and choreograph professionally. I want them to learn the value of hard work, dedication, a great attitude and heart. These attributes will not only help them tremendously with dance, but with everything they do in life.” LAD students perform together as groups in the community dozens of times each year, including at the organization’s signature holiday event, “A Season of Wishes,” which in the last 21 years has raised more than $615,000 for the Make-AWish Foundation of Philadelphia, Delaware and the Susquehanna Valley. “We wish to provide a studio that teaches the high-
est level of dance instruction, and in a nurturing atmosphere,” said Kalinowski. “We also wish to show our dancers that they can use the art they love so much to do so much good.” For additional information, go to www.lititz academyofdance.com.

If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning , AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.”
As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location - which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments. “ T h i s i s n’t s o m e o ne coming in with a PowerPoint, giving their presentation and then you never hear from them again,” she said. “Our first priority before educating people is building trust and building that relationship with them. We want to know, ‘Where are you at in your journey with this topic? What do you know? How can we help you?’” W i t h e a c h p ro g ra m , WOW works to present information that’s relatable to the audience, whether that’s a group of senior citizens at a retirement community or a bunch of preschoolers. Gilbert noted that feedback the organiz ation receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’” she said. “Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered

on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “ We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we can reach the most people and that’s the most convenient for them.” WOW has offered programing to church groups, homeschool co-ops, residents of homeless shelters and domestic violence shelters, schools and more. “ W hatever the group wants, we can design our program to fit their needs,” Gilbert remarked. And WOW is always working to expand its repertoire of services. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel. She’ll bring a handful of laptops, a WiFi hotspot, a projector and a screen to provide the classes. “We don’t want anything to be a barrier to us coming in and doing a program,” she said. WOW has also begun offering programs focused on AI, the first Goodwill in the country to do so, Gilbert said. “We’re working on breaking down the barrier of being scared or intimidated to use AI,” she said. “We talk about safety and privacy. We break it down so people can see how easy it is to use AI.” While some people may think AI is a topic suited for businesses or people in the tech industry, it can be a helpful tool for anyone, she said. “ We have a pro g ram called ‘AI at Home,’ where we show people how they can use AI for things like making a meal plan, setting
a grocery budget, help with their r√©sum√© or creating an exercise routine,” Gilbert remarked. WOW programs can be one-time sessions or multiweek initiatives, depending on the topic. T he program is selffunded through grants and proceeds from Goodwill retail stores. Recently, Sen. James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,” Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through partnerships with organizations, like the Lancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 individuals throughout 22 counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. Gilbert hopes to impact even more people in the future. “A lot of people want to learn more about financial literacy or have a retirement plan or learn to invest or build an emergenc y fund, but they don’t have a plan to do that, and nothing moves forward,” she said. “Take the first step and reach out to me, and I’ll take it from there.” To learn more about WOW, contact Gilbert at tgilbert@yourgoodwill.org, call 610-858-5137 or visit www.yourgoodwill.org/ services/wow.

Jankowski from pg 1 “I just played in Texas two years ago. But I did question if the players were going to trust me completely. The relationships come from relatability, from building trust. It’s a really hard game. (Coaches) appreciate how hard the game is and how much work the guys put in.” A fter being released by the New York Mets in July of 2025, Jankowski was contemplating his next career step and considering trying to make a major league roster as a player out of 2026 spring training. Pretty much out of nowhere, Jankowski got a call from Texas manager Skip Schumaker, a man with whom he had had a great prior relationship. “He was like, ‘Hey, what are you doing next year? Do you want to coach? I want you to be my big league first-base coach with the Texas Rangers,’” said Jankowski. “I said, ‘OK, let me think about it. When do you want to start the interview process?’ He
said, ‘Tomorrow.’ I talked to (my wife) Linds, and she said, ‘Do you know what? I think you’ve got to take it. We’re used to the grind of the season. I think it will be good for you.’ “I don’t think I honestly ever retired,” Jankowski added. Following standout careers at Lancaster Catholic and Stony Brook University, Jankowski was drafted by the San Diego Padres and played for nine different major league teams during his big-league career. In 1,552 career at-bats, Jankowski hit 11 home runs, drove in 98 runs, scored 220 runs and sported a .236 career batting average with 104 stolen bases. “One of the best compliments I ever got was from two coaches I respect, who said, ‘You are a true professional,’” said Jankowski. “‘You play the game the right way, and you’re an asset in the clubhouse.’ That meant a lot to me, especially being a bench player like I was. Bergstressers from pg 1 have to be ready for what’s next. It’s also helped us appreciate our health and our time together as a family.” Harry and the Bergstressers’ story is a reminder of the immeasurable value of health and that we as humans will all face hardships in one form or another, at one time or another. Harry is a fairly typical teenager, outside of the fact that he is currently facing the possibility of a second kidney transplant. About two years ago, the kidney that his dad, Paul, donated to him when he was an infant showed signs of being rejected by Harry’s body. “I would say Harry is in a stable place, but it’s not great,” said Alissa. “He’s definitely on a road to a second transplant. His kidney function is not great. But the emotional struggle has been worse than the physical struggle. “He struggles with feel-
ings of isolation because he doesn’t have peers who are going through something similar,” Alissa added. “He puts on a brave face. Overall, I think he’s extremely brave and extremely resilient. But he can’t have all these strong moments all the time. He knows he’s going to need another transplant. I think he’s getting tired of not having a physical break.” When it is determined that he will need another transplant, Harry, who’s a ninth-grader at Manheim Township High School, will be placed on a waiting list for a new kidney. The compatible kidney could come from a friend or family member, or it could come from a deceased donor. During the 2025-26 scholastic year, Harry missed 60 days of his eighth-grade experience at Manheim Township Middle School. “I will definitely be tested, and friends and family will
be tested to see who is a match as a living donor,” said Alissa. “The prognosis for the current kidney is not great. Depending on the avenue he goes down, the quality of life could be better or worse. “ T he k id ne y i s ve r y important because it serves multiple roles in the body,” added Alissa. “It helps with water and excreting waste. It helps with our blood pressure. It’s important for the balance of the electrolytes in our bodies.” When he was six months old, Harry was diagnosed with a congenital kidney defect. He received a kidney donation from Paul when he was 2. “The kidney transplant went as we all we could’ve hoped for,” said Alissa. “Then in 2023, Harry started having complications. “Harry’s an old soul,” she continued. “He’s unique in that he prefers the company of adults. He loves, loves
animals. He likes music. He’s kind and generous and always worried about doing the right thing.” Four years ago, Alissa began working for UPMC. “Harry received his care elsewhere until I started working for UPMC,” said Alissa. “UPMC is known nationally for its world-renowned care. What’s been hugely important is that there are times when he can get his care in Harrisburg and Lititz, instead of going to Pittsburgh. They can provide his care locally. “No one knows anyone else’s struggles,” concluded Alissa. “When you look at Harry on some days, you might not know about his struggles. He’s carrying a huge burden for a 14-yearold. It’s important to be open-minded, and knowing people’s backgrounds is so important. You don’t know what has shaped them to become the people they are today.”
