Johnna McCormick, youth director, St. Paul Lutheran Church, 200 W. Orange St., Lititz, is excited about the return of Empty Bowls, an event that McCormick and her church youth group first held in 2017.

For McCormick, the annual meal, which raises funds to fight hunger in the Lititz community, is important not only for what it accomplishes, but for who organizes it.

“This stemmed from a youth-led event,” said McCormick. “Our youth group works this whole event.”

According to McCormick, members of St. Paul youth are “the first faces you see when you walk through the door.” “They’re running the silent auction and the bowl tables,” she said, adding that Warwick High School junior Maggie Turner designed the event poster. “It really gives young people an opportunity to step into leadership,” she said.

After being canceled for two years due to COVID-19 concerns, Empty Bowls will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Rock Lititz Pod 2, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. “When

you walk in, you are immediately shuffled to an area where there are tables covered with beautifully colored, different, unique handcrafted bowls,” said McCormick, who noted that local artists donate about 250 original bowls to the event. “You make your selection, and that will be your bowl to keep.” Next, guests may sample a variety of soups donated by about a dozen local restaurants. “(The restaurants) bring a homemade soup from their

restaurant served by staff so there’s very much a community connection to the restaurants, the businesses, and the people in the community,” said McCormick. “We also have bakeries donate bread and desserts to be part of the meal.”

In addition to soups, breads, and desserts, the event will feature live music by classic rock duo Benit and Miller. Both a silent auction and a Chinese auction will be held. “Restaurants donate gift

cards, and artists donate unique pieces (for the auctions),” noted McCormick, who said that in the past, local businesses have donated gift baskets and gift packages and memberships.

According to McCormick, a premium ticket includes a bowl. Prices are discounted for children, who receive a paper bowl, and children age 4 and under may attend for free. In 2019, including volunteers, nearly 400 area residents

attended. Because part of the mission statement of Empty Bowls is “ fighting hunger in our community,” all funds raised by Empty Bowls will benefit the Lititz/Warwick Community Chest.

Tickets, which went on sale Oct. 3, may be purchased by searching for “2022 Lititz Empty Bowls Dinner” at www.eventbrite.com. More information about the 2022 Empty Bowls may be found by searching for “Lititz Empty Bowls” on Facebook.

You walk your dog, walk for exercise, or go for a run, and most of the time you probably do not give much thought to your safety. Being aware of threats that could invade your routine is the first step toward increasing your personal security.

According to Jerry Harper, president of Community Safety & Security Consultants (CCSC) of Lititz, raising your safety level begins with raising your awareness. “The most important thing I tell people is to

“I am super excited,” said Michelle Gibbs, program director with House of His Creation (HOHC), as she headed down to the basement of the house at 301 N. Broad St., Lititz. “All of this is new.” The new area includes a Cricut Creation Station Gibbs has set up to teach the mothers who live at HOHC how to make personalized items and a boutique for the mothers to shop in.

Gibbs has used the Cricut machines to create T-shirts, mugs, jewelry, and purses with the HOHC logo on them. “W ho doesn’t love personalized items?” asked Gibbs. “My goal is to help the women learn some entrepreneurship skills because we know that as a single mom, it takes a lot (to support yourself and your baby),” she explained. “You need to be able to generate extra income and still be mom

Community Corn Pickin’ 5K Set

Oregon Dairy, 2900 Oregon Pike, Lititz, will host a Community Corn Pickin’ 5K Race to support nonprofit organizations in the village of Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 8.

The 5K race will start and finish at the Oregon Dairy Corn Maze Barn, cross scenic farmland, wind through Landis Homes, and finish with a lap through the corn maze. The event will also include a 1-mile fun run/walk and kids’ dash.

The 5K and 1-mile fun run/walk will start at 8 a.m., with the kids’ dash at 9 a.m. Awards will be presented to overall winners based on gun time and top finishers based on chipped timing in each of the following age brackets: 18 and under, 19 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69, and 70 and up.

Registration will be discounted through Oct. 6 and full price on Friday, Oct. 7, and Oct. 8. To register or donate, visit www.oregondairy.com/family -fun/corn-pickin-5k.

All proceeds from the race will benefit Landis Homes, Friendship Community, and COBYS Family Services. The donation goal for the event is $5,000.

Donations given to Landis Homes will go toward ensuring that aging adults and their families have the peace of mind and financial support to live healthy, meaningful lives. Friendship Community will use the contributions it receives to support its residential living and day services within its mission of cultivating capabilities of individuals with intellectual disability and autism. Donations benefiting COBYS will support the organization’s wide range of services, including foster care, adoption, permanency, counseling, and family life education services for at-risk children and families.

to your children.” Gibbs said creating the station has been on her heart for a while. In addition to the Cricut station, Gibbs has stocked the area with arts and crafts items. “Some of the women like to draw or sew,” she noted. “We want to be able to offer them something they can do to make some extra money during those first months (when) you want to be there with your child.”

Adjacent to the Cricut station is the small boutique. “(Women at HOHC) can earn points to purchase things for their children and themselves,” said Gibbs. Points can be earned by attending certain classes, preparing a meal, or cleaning office space. Gibbs has lined the shelves of the boutique with baby items such as diapers, wipes, shampoo, baby

clothes, and stuffed animals. A few larger items, including strollers, playpens, and a highchair, are also available. Other items in the boutique include backpacks, school supplies, and journals, and Gibbs has stocked pots, pans, and cookbooks for program graduates who are ready to leave HOHC.

Changes at HOHC, which provides housing and other support to pregnant women age 18 and over, have been occurring in the last several months. Matthew Neff, director of HOHC, and his wife, Callie, program director with HOHC South, recently relocated to Florida, where they opened 685, a refuge for girls who have been rescued from human trafficking.

In Lititz, Gibbs said, the house is prepared to accom-

modate up to four women at a time. New house parents Bill and Trish Sclafani are settled on the third floor.

“We are excited to open these doors again,” said Gibbs, who said that women should primarily be in their first or second trimester of pregnancy and that they may remain at the house for six months after delivery. Gibbs works with a number of outside agencies to bring together all the components a woman needs during her pregnancy and after, including A Woman’s Concern and the Nurse-Family Partnership. Gibbs has also instituted the Stepping Up House of His Creation Aftercare program for women who choose to continue to receive services after leaving HOHC.

always be aware of their surroundings,” said Harper, who recommends taking a situational safety class to learn what concerning behaviors look like. “Be aware of vehicles (that are) parked nearby. Is there anyone near them? W hat are (those people) doing?” Harper encourages people to trust their instincts. “If you feel uneasy, cross the street,” he said. “Walk near a residence or where you see other people so there are other witnesses involved.”

Of course, being aware also means being alert. “Make sure you’re not distracted,” said Harper. “People like to crank up the music, and they wear earbuds, so they don’t hear a vehicle coming up behind them (or) they don’t hear the stones moving on the walkway or

highway when someone is running up behind them or from behind a bush,” he explained. “I tell people, ‘Keep one earbud out or keep your volume down so you have some hearing.’”

Another recommendation from Harper is to always carry pepper spray. “Have it clipped to your waist in case you’re in a situation where you need to defend yourself and create separation (between you and a threat),” said Harper, who recommends learning to use the spray properly. “We teach people to aim starting at the chest and (moving) upward,” said Harper, who noted aiming only for the eyes will not work if the assailant tries to duck. “Starting out at the chest and zig-zagging upward will maximize the effectiveness due to the vapors of the pepper spray rising upward,” he said.

Some things that can help keep you safer should be done before you even think of leaving your home. Steps such as varying the time that you walk or run and changing up your route on a regular basis are simple ways to decrease your risk. “Definitely change your routes and your times if

necessary,” said Harper. “(Predators) watch for a pattern so they can plan on that behavior.” Harper recommended altering driving routes for the same reason.

Thanks to technology, there are now phone applications that can alert those closest to you using a key word or PIN. Some apps will alert chosen individuals to your GPS location or record sound or video f or an extended amount of time. “If something would happen, (the app) will start notifying the people who are important to you so they can start sharing that information with authorities,” Harper said.

Harper also advises taking a basic self-defense course. “If you are a victim of an attack, it’s nice to have options to escape a certain kind of hold or grab,” he said. “The basics of certain tactics do work to create separation.”

Hands-On-History Days

“(Hands-On-History Days) are very popular,” said Sheri Brown, workshop coordinator with Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster. Brown noted that Hands-On-History Days began as a day for homeschoolers to visit the museum. “(The event) has changed over the past 19 years to three days that we celebrate in October,” she added.

Hands-On-History Days, which were not held or were modified during the past two years due to COVID-19 restrictions, will return on Thursdays, Oct. 13, 20, and 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day. A per-person admission fee will be charged, but Landis Valley Associates members may attend for free, as can children age 5 and under. Groups of 10 or more are required to make reservations prior to attending.

“The whole purpose is to have (the activities) be hands on,” said Brown, who noted that the events will be fall themed. One of the most popular places to visit is an authentic schoolhouse, where a lesson based on a fall poem will be taught. “We use McGuffey Readers and historic books for our lesson plan,” said Brown, who noted that the schoolhouse was donated and moved to the site from Snake Hill Road in Leola. “(Students) work with a slate and chalk, and they learn elocution, (through what) we call tongue twisters today,” she said.

Students will also have

opportunities to take part in farm chores from the 1700s and 1800s. “They will stuff a mattress with straw, so they get a true feel for a lumpy mattress,” said Brown, who added that bedding was generally changed a couple times a year. “They will learn how laundry was done with a scrubbing board and the oldfashioned-dryer called a clothesline,” she added. Students will also learn to build a snake fence, so named because of its zig-zag shape. “The bonus is those fences can be moved quickly,” explained Brown.

Organizers have turned a traditional Pennsylvania

German folk art into a makeand-take craft for the event.

“We will make scherenschnitte pumpkins and leaves they can take home,” said Brown, who said that at home, students can enhance their simple fall-themed decorations with watercolors or crayons.

In addition, museum staff members will be provide demonstrations and interpretations in areas such as tavern cooking, blacksmithing, leatherworking, and weaving.

Readers who would like more information or to make reservations may email c-sherbrow@pa.gov or call 717-569-0401, ext. 228.

Maize And Snitz Market Fair Planned

Mennonite Life invites people to immerse themselves in the cultures of early European and indigenous people of Lancaster County at the Maize and Snitz Market Fair on Friday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The rain-or-shine event will be held at the 1719 Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street.

Attendees may amble through an 18th-century themed Market Fair and engage with artisans demonstrating early American trades. They may also visit the home built in 1719 for the Herr family or learn about indigenous life by experiencing the Lancaster Longhouse. A variety of handcrafted items will be available for purchase, including redware pottery, hand-dyed wool yarn, handturned wooden implements, wrought iron, bobbin lace, and 18th-century paper goods. Professional tradespeople will demonstrate baking and hearth cooking both days.

Featured interpreters will include Barry Lee, Henry Spadt and Mark Turdo.

Lee, of the Munsee tribe, will present his handmade replicas of historic wampum belts and artwork. When not sharing his cultural history with the public, he performs with his wife, Barbara, as the musical group Spirit Wing.

Spadt will interpret 17th- and 18th-century history, focusing on the motivations for behaviors and interactions among Europeans and native tribes. He will interpret Iroquois material culture and trade items.

A historian and museum curator, Turdo has been researching early American cider making for the past 20 years. On Friday, he will discuss the history of cider along with his experiments in re-creating 18th-century recipes.

Separate ticket fees have been set for adults and for youths. Admission is free for children age 6 and under. Attendees may pay at the event or prepurchase tickets at www.mennonitelife.org.

Masking at this event is optional.

From The Editor’s Desk

Since 1940, National Newspaper Week has been observed the first full week in October, so I thought it appropriate to share my thoughts on why supporting your local newspaper is more important than ever.

It’s a popular notion that the internet has marked the downfall of community newspapers. And, while many have stopped publishing due to tough economic times, the rising cost of newsprint, and other factors, your community newspapers can do something the internet can’t: We promote connections at a local level. Some say that because people can tweet, blog, surf, shop, and search online, no one reads newspapers anymore, but you just proved that to be a myth. Rather than being replaced by all the noise

of “instant” media, your free local paper has become more important than ever. We are a part of your neighborhood. We shine a spotlight on people and organizations that make your town a better place to live, work, and play. No, they probably won’t get a million views on TikTok, but they are heroes who live down the street and are making a positive difference in our community.

In the past year the publisher of this newspaper, Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) has featured more than 1,500 front-page articles benefiting more than 1,000 local nonprofit organizations in Lancaster, Chester, Berks, York, and Dauphin counties. Those numbers don’t take into account the thousands of press releases that make their way into our papers each year.

With all the talk about social media, why do we continue to publish free community newspapers? It’s who we are and who we’ve been for nearly 70 years. We live here, too, and we want to keep our communities thriving as much as you do.

If you know of an organization or individual making a positive impact on your community, contact us at news@engleonline.com or visit https://townlively.com/event -submission to submit an event.

Addressing Headlight Glare

Headlight glare becomes dangerous when visibility is impaired to a point where the risk of accidents is heightened. Glare is a growing problem for many modern drivers due to the increased use of light emitting diodes in headlights.

Driving at night is challenging because pedestrians, cars and other obstacles are difficult to see once the sun sets, and headlight glare can cause further problems. A study

from the U.S. Department of Transportation found that 88% of drivers noticed LED and HID headlight glare. W hile LED lights may not actually be brighter, their “cool” color temperature can make them appear so. Studies have found that blue and white light tends to hit people’s eyes harder, especially at night.

In addition, human eyes do not adjust to changes in lighting very quickly, according to

Pierre Paul Driving School in New York City. The older a person gets, the longer his or her eyes take to adjust to changes in lighting. In fact, it can take up to seven seconds to recover from the blinding glare of headlights. That’s enough time to swerve off the road or potentially hit something. While glare can be problematic, drivers can take steps to make nighttime driving safer.

- Clean the windshield. Dirt

and grime found on the windshield can refract light and make glare worse. Therefore, clean all windows and mirrors thoroughly, inside and out.Repair scratches and cracks. Glare can be exacerbated by any imperfections in the windshield. Repair cracks or scratches promptly.

- Get a vision and health check. Changes to vision can impact how glare affects certain individuals. Vitamin A deficiency can cause night blindness, also known as nyctalopia. Eye shape changes, including a condition called keratoconus, can affect vision. Cataracts and diabetes can also impair vision. Visit a primary care physician as well as an eye doctor to check for conditions that can make night vision worse.

- Change your line of sight. Do not look directly into oncoming headlights. Rather, look slightly down and to the right side of the road so that you are not

How To Maintain An Older Vehicle

New cars have been costly for quite some time, but those costs have spiked considerably since the onset of the COVID19 pandemic. That unprecedented rise may lead many motorists to wonder how they can get more mileage out of their existing vehicles. According to data from Kelley Blue Book and Cox Automotive, the average cost of a new car in September 2021 was just over $45,000. That marked a $3,000 increase from June 2021 and a $5,000 increase from the end of 2020.

Drivers who may not be able to afford the cost of a new vehicle can take the following steps to keep their existing cars running smoothly for years to come.

- Take care of the timing belt. Engines may get all the glory, but they cannot run smoothly without a fully functional timing belt, which helps to synchronize movements of various components. Owner’s manuals may note when to replace the timing belt, but they generally must be replaced every 60,000 to 105,000 miles. Although replacement is required infrequently, drivers can ask their mechanics to keep an eye on their timing belts. During the early months of the pandemic, many people learned that infrequent driving can cause a timing belt to fail before it reaches the projected mile marker.

Aging drivers should keep this fact in mind if they do not drive as much as they used to.

- Take care of the brakes and associated components. The experts at Popular Mechanics urge drivers of older vehicles to replace their brake fluid every two years.

Popular Mechanics also advises drivers whose cars are more than seven years old to replace the rubber brake lines when major brake work is required.

- Pay attention to oil levels. The older engines get, the more oil they burn. For this reason, owners of older vehicles should check their oil levels more often than they would if their vehicles were brand new. These checks also provide a way to discover leaks before they lead to potentially significant issues.

- Don’t skip maintenance appointments. Even if you’re still driving less due to the pandemic, it’s best to keep up with maintenance on any car, especially if the car is older. Routine tuneups and oil changes, which may need to become more frequent the older the vehicle gets, can keep cars running smoothly and protect the engine over the long haul.

The rising cost of new cars may compel people to keep their cars longer than they might have anticipated. A few simple maintenance measures may help to prolong the life of a vehicle.

focusing on the beams.

- Get glare-resistant coatings on eyeglasses. Speak with an optician about eyeglasses with a coating that can reduce the amount of glare. VisionCenters.com says standard plastic lenses reflect around 8% of the light that reaches glasses, while high-index lenses reflect up to 12% of available light. Anti-glare coating allows 99.5% of available light to reach the eyes, essentially eliminating glare. Those who don’t wear eyeglasses can purchase special anti-glare glasses

to wear in high-glare conditions, such as when looking at computer and phone screens.

- Flip your rearview mirror to night mode, if you have this option. This setting will make it appear as though lights coming from behind are dimmer.

- Take breaks. When glare makes driving difficult, take a break to help your eyes recover.

These are some of the steps people may take when glare becomes problematic while driving at night.

Disguise & Prize Will Offer Family Fun

The members of Jerusalem Church believe in giving “Glory to God.” That’s the message cut into a corn maze located at the church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim. For the seventh time, a team of church members designed and created the maze, and people are invited to explore paths through the cornstalks as part of the church’s Disguise & Prize event. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. The rain date will be Sunday, Oct. 9.

“It’s a simple maze, but it’s fun. We give out a map and an aerial photo for people to use as a guide, and they can use those tools if they want to, or they can navigate the maze on their own,” explained Angie Havice, coordinator of the event. She noted that although the maze contains several dead ends, encountering one isn’t a setback. “Everyone will get a prize at the start and at the finish of the maze, and there are six dead-end stations throughout the maze, where someone will

be stationed to give out a prize to collect,” she said.

Throughout the church’s parking lot, decorated cars will be set up, with families giving out small prizes as well.

Havice noted that the church originally held a carnival-style event in the parking lot before the creation of the corn maze, and that activity eventually morphed into the Disguise & Prize event.

“Creating the corn maze really opened the doors to creativity for people who wanted to decorate their car,” she noted. “Everyone who decorates a car comes up with a theme and then tries to have an activity that goes with that theme, something that will be more interactive than just getting candy.” In the past, she noted, a car with a Hawaiian theme featured a limbo game, while a car with a construction theme was accompanied by a pebble-filled sandbox game.

“We try to make the stations varied in activities that would appeal to kids from toddler age up through elementary school-age kids,”

Havice noted, “but really, this is for the whole family. There’s something for everyone to enjoy.” Previous years have included more than 10 decorated cars and stations, she said, adding, “It’s really amazing how creative people can get.”

Children are encouraged to come in “disguise,” or costume, but it is not required, Havice emphasized. “Come as you are,” she said. “Some people come in really elaborate costumes, while other people come in no disguise at all, but everyone enjoys the activities.”

She noted that Jerusalem Church holds the annual event as a way to connect with the community and to provide a fun family outing.

“We want to communicate through this event that we care about families,” Havice remarked. “This is something we can do that is unique, and it’s something that’s been appreciated by the community. We’ve always had a good turnout, and people tend to stay for a while. This is a safe, no-cost event. Our church wants to cultivate strong fam-

The memorial is made of concrete, granite, and stone. Its structure is generally in good condition but requires repairs and alterations to address areas of damage due to long-term exposure to the elements.

Funded by the state as a public improvement project, the renovations will cost $3.6 million. Specific repairs will include re-anchoring plaques, resetting existing pre-cast concrete, waterproofing walls, replacing flashing and upgrading drainage.

Community members may pay tribute to veterans while also helping to preserve the memorial by donating to the Pennsylvania Veterans’ Memorial Trust Fund. Taxdeductible donations to the

fund can be made at www.donate.dmva.pa.gov; information on donating by mail is also available on this site. Donations can be made in honor of, in memory of or on behalf of another person.

One hundred percent of donations go toward the ongoing upkeep of the memorial, such as landscaping, lighting, and fountains as well as needed maintenance for structural and cosmetic components throughout the memorial.

There is no public water and sewer currently available for this tract and the lot has never been perked and probed for an online sewer permit. There is an easement for the Columbia Gas Pipeline on the west side of the tract. Since this property is vacant and has never had any improvement, it does not currently have a street mailing address. The county property ID number is 600-7736-0-0000. Check with Warwick Township Zoning Office with any questions regarding your contemplated use for this property.

WARWICK SCHOOL DISTRICT – APPROX. $1,450 CURRENT TOTAL YEARLY R.E. TAXES.

*TERMS OF SALE - $15,000 down payment on the day of sale; balance at settlement on or before 12/5/2022. Purchaser pays both realty transfer taxes. Property sold as-is. Gibbel, Kraybill & Hess, Atty.

Garden Railways Tour Planned

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will offer the 15th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 9, from 1 to 5 p.m.

The self-guided tour for people of all ages will feature operating model trains in various outdoor and garden settings. Attendees may choose from among seven stops located in Wrightsville, Lancaster, Coatesville, Lititz and Manheim.

Garden railways are a fastgrowing interest area in model railroading. Garden railways may be set up in very small spaces or large expanses, as well as in differing climates and in widely varying degrees of complexity.

Tickets must be obtained in advance for all attendees. There is a fee per person for those age 6 and over, and children age 5 and under will be admitted free of charge. To purchase tickets, search for “Garden Railways Tour” on Eventbrite; tickets will not be sold at the individual tour sites.

For more information about the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, visit www.RRMuseum PA.org or call 717-687-8628.
