Hammond mentioned that the group is thankful to the community for its generous donations. “We are getting a lot of estate jewelry,” she said, noting that many area residents have donated jewelry when they downsized or decided to refresh their current collection. “I have a friend who once a year goes through her jewelry box and gives us what she is tired of and then comes and buys new things from us,” she stated.

chains and necklaces, pins, pierced earrings, clipped earrings, sets, regular necklaces, chunky necklaces, watches, rings, and crosses and other pieces of religious jewelry.

According to Donna Hammond, a member of the Friends of the Lititz Public Library, not holding a jewelry sale since the advent of COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 has resulted in an interesting problem. “We can’t get the closet closed because it’s filled with boxes like this (of vintage and costume jewelry),” said Hammond with a chuckle. “People were at home and had time to go through their jewelry boxes, so we will have a fantastic selection,” she predicted.

“He is a Goldador,” said Jenn Rissler, who is raising Honor, a four-month-old puppy for Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD). Honor, who is all black except for one white spot on his stomach, does not look much like a gold breed of anything, but Rissler is quick to pull up photos of Honor’s mom, a white golden retriever, and his dad, a black Labrador retriever.

All funds raised by the sale are donated to the Lititz Public Library to use wherever they are most needed.

Her second dog, Colby, moved on to his next phase of training toward becoming a school facility dog in early August. “Children are (Colby’s) passion, and Linzey didn’t want to train that out of him,” explained Rissler. Linzey is Linzey Zoccola, who founded PAD in 2009. Zoccola believes it is important to match a dog’s personality to the type of work he will be doing in the future.

Artist Adrienne Judge brought her 3-D creations featuring flowers to the interview. Last year, Judge’s mother, artist Lisa Madenspacher, displayed Judge’s art in the photo for the article. Judge’s piece, “End of Summer Limelight Hydrangea,” features the beautiful whites and pinks of the tiny flowers as they fade at the end of summer, blending in yellow to create a peach shadow. During the COVID-19 shutdown, Judge connected with a friend who was creating art that was thick and textured. “I was so inspired,” said Judge, who uses lots of acrylic paint and cake decorating tips to pipe different flowers. She often re-creates wedding bouquets in the format, noting that the flowers are fun to touch. “(The paint is) super hard but still flexible,” she said.

Among the artists taking part in the show will be Stephen Gambone, who has often brought cityscapes to the interviews for my articles over the years. This year, Gambone brought the colorful “City Over the Water,” which he called a more abstract cityscape. The painting features bright aqua, red, yellow, and blue in a piece that shows both the outline of the city and its upside-down reflection in a body of water. Gambone calls his art a “fusion of both music and color gracefully colliding with emotion.” The Lancaster artist draws inspiration from peaceful environments, such as beaches, and his close relationship with God.

Preparing to take part in the annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show are (from left) Adrienne Judge, Stephen Gambone, Alex Van Pelt of the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department, and Paris Llanso.

Local artist Paris Llanso has participated for many years. Known for her prima impasto method, Llanso displayed an octopus done with yellow, purple, fuchsia, and red highlights against a blue background. “I just love octopuses. I love their movements,” said Llanso. “They are really fun to do.” Llanso also brought a painting of a tree bathed in light but also surrounded by darkness. “This is from my mind (based on) what’s going on in the world … my faith and hope,” said Llanso.

Historic Ephrata Cloister is a National Historic Landmark administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates.

Museum Day celebrates the nation’s museums, zoos, aquariums, and cultural centers with free admission to participating institutions with a special required ticket. This ticket will provide general admission for the ticket holder plus one guest, and it will only be valid on Museum Day. It will not be valid for special exhibits, parking, IMAX film screenings, or any other offer. Visitors to the Historic Ephrata Cloister without the required ticket will be charged the standard admission, with separate fees set for adults, for seniors age 65 and up, and for children ages 3 to 5.

institutions throughout the country along with other important information about using the ticket.

The Historic Ephrata Cloister is the place where the town of Ephrata began in 1732. Nine of the original buildings, built between the 1740s and 1800, are preserved to tell the story of the religious community that became known for its original music, art and publishing and its significant architecture. Guided tours visit the two largest buildings on the site, the Saal (Meetinghouse), built in 1741, and the adjoining Saron (Sisters’ House), built in 1743. Seven additional buildings open for self-guided tours include the printing office, physician’s house, bakery, and weaver’s house. The museum store offers a selection of locally made crafts, along with books, candles, art, and note cards.

For his part, Honor has proven himself to be very teachable. “He is easy to train. He’s so intelligent,” said Rissler, who added that as a dog lover, she has been excited to learn about high-reward treats and scatter training techniques, which she can now use with other dogs.

Amijah was diagnosed at Hershey Medical Center after experiencing back pain. “She was inconsolable,” said Ashley, who tried warm baths to

To help alleviate the costs of Amijah’s care, a benefit motorcycle ride dubbed Lil’ Diva’s First Annual CRMO Awareness Benefit Ryde will be held on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Elks Lodge 1933, 170 Akron Road, Ephrata. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. Kickstands will go up at 10 a.m., and festivities will begin around 1 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, will be discounted through Saturday, Sept. 24.

The planned motorcycle ride will take a scenic route. “It’s prettier with the fall foliage coming out,” said Ashley, who noted Amijah enjoys the beauty of nature. “She likes pretty stuff. She will point out a pretty sunset to me,” said Ashley. Part of the ride will be a stop at The Udder Choice in Ephrata. “We will have a little surprise for her during the ride,” said Ashley. “Udder Choice will open up for us to come for ice cream.” Ashley said that Amijah and her brother will arrive in separate cars donated by BDR Automotive of New Holland, where they will meet up with the motorcyclists.

Amijah Mahoney is not an ordinary 6-year-old. Nicknamed Lil’ Diva, Amijah is what her mom calls a “ride or die.” “That means she will be there no matter what you need,” said Ashley, Amijah’s mother.

American violinist Andrew Sords, along with his piano accompanist, will perform at the Lancaster Church of the Brethren (COB), 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. The event is part of the congregation’s Starlight Tea concert series, and tea and cookies will be served following the program.

Sords has performed across the United States as well as internationally, appearing with nearly 300 orchestras. Passionate about social causes, he has also performed for various charitable groups and was the first classical artist to compete in the charity fundraiser “Pittsburgh’s Dancing With the Stars.” He resides in Ohio. Support from PAD during the puppy-raising experience has been plentiful, according to Rissler. “Linzey sends out information regularly about infections going around,” she said, adding that there is a PAD Training Club on Facebook where information for puppy raisers is posted. “There are videos, things to read, modules to learn from, and housebreaking tips,” said Rissler. “There’s a lot of support.”

Back at the Elks Lodge following the ride, a meal at the pavilion will include hot dogs, broasted chicken from Bright’s restaurant, chips, salad, and baked beans.

Amijah is also unusual because she has a rare disease called chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO), which attacks her bones. One of fewer than 500 people in the world with CRMO, Amijah, who was diagnosed in June, will need monthly infusions at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to help keep her bones from becoming damaged, deformed, or broken. While CRMO can go into remission, Amijah expects to fight the rest of her life to avoid becoming disabled.

“(Puppiescollar.intraining) are allowed basically everywhere,” said Rissler,

“There was nothing I could do.” Amijah’s primary care physician took Xrays. “They thought she had a fracture in her lower back,” said Ashley, who asked for more testing. Amijah was sent to Hershey, where lesions were found on her back and legs. Since then, Amijah has had two MRIs, and she will be going to Iowa to visit the only CRMO specialist in the U.S. “Infusions and treatments will give her a chance to live a more normal life,” said Ashley, who noted she is working to form a nonprofit organization to raise funds for other children who need CRMO treatment. “This is so rare,” said Ashley. “Every year, we plan to do a ride, but it may be (to raise funds) for another child. We are trying to help the families who need (help) with expenses.”

commands are next, including learning to touch her hand with his nose, a command trainers can build on to teach Honor to open a door. “He knows ‘sit’ and ‘down’,” said Rissler, who explained that Honor is learning to sit patiently under her legs in a restaurant. He also knows the commands “leave it” and “off.” Treats are handed out liberally during this stage of training.

Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., will host an ice cream social and chalk drawing presentation by Lititz artist Elva Hurst on Sunday, Sept. 18, from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. in the Family Life Center. Residents of Lititz and neighboring communities are invited to attend. The theme will be “All God’s Creatures.”

“Many may not know, but ‘pig iron’ refers to the cast-iron ingots produced by the Marietta iron furnaces in the 19th century,” explained Marcus Snow, president of the Donegal Area Rotary Club, which is hosting the event. “Molten iron was poured into ingot molds, which branched off of a central vein of iron. The ingots looked like little piglets feeding off of the mother pig, and so the nickname ‘pig iron’ took hold. The early iron industry built Marietta, and the fest honors that history.”

Participants should enter the church at the back of the building through the portico covered doors directly across from the Tree House Playground. There is no admission fee.

A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following the opening ceremonies each morning, she said, adding that participants should bring their own bait and rod.

For two days, the heritage of the Bainbridge area will be showcased at Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days. Ron Bernhard, who volunteers with the event, said two days is hardly enough. “We have a lot of people and a lot of families who come all day both days,” he stated. “There is so much to see and do.”

The 24th annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, and Sunday, Sept. 18, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. The Conoy Lions Club will host breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

On Sunday morning, an interdenominational church service will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. “All of the local churches in the Bainbridge area participate in this service,” Ron said.

“We really try to focus on family things to do and lots of things kids will enjoy,” noted Ron. “We will have Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactors who will interact with the kids. We’ll have representatives of the Susquehannock Indians who will do activities with the kids.”

Attendees to the event are invited to bring lawn chairs. For more information on the event, search for “Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.

Tonya noted that Old-Fashioned Field Days would not happen without a team of volunteers and without financial support from the community.

Children’s activities will include a hayride to a pumpkin patch, where kids can pick out a pumpkin. “We’ll also have a barrel train, and we’ll have corn boxes for kids to play in like a sandbox,” Tonya commented.

Craft vendors and live music will be featured on both days. Food will be provided by various civic organizations, including the Conoy Lions Club, local Boy Scout troops and local churches, said volunteer Tonya Bernhard, Ron’s wife.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS

A variety of demonstrations will be held both days, Ron remarked. “We’ll have a blacksmith, soapmaking, a cider press, people demonstrating weaving,” he said. “The blacksmith shop in town will also be open.” The shop is located at 15 S. Second St. Engines and tractors are part of the festivities as well, and a tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. “This year, we have a water theme, where we encouraged people to show any antiques they can think of that use water, like unique water pumps or sprinklers,” Ron stated. Demonstrations of corn shelling and corn grinding equipment will also be featured, and an operating shingle mill will create shingles branded specifically for the event, available for a donation.

When you attend the Pig Iron Fest & Car Show, not only will you enjoy a day of family fun, but you’ll also be giving a nod to the region’s history.

“There’s no cost to attend this event and no cost to park,” she said. “The food is reasonably priced. It’s a nice time to get the community together to show how things used to be and highlight days gone past.”

The Pig Iron Fest & Car Show will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Community Bible Church, 331 Anderson Ferry Road, Marietta. In “Dressing Up Is for the Birds,” Blank transports viewers to the streets of Venice, where she noticed a woman dressed in colorful clothing sitting alone along the street as birds seemed to be gather around her.Born and raised in Lancaster County, Blank is a self-taught artist. As a child, she took part in the art competitions at the local farmers’ fairs, often taking home a ribbon or two. In high school, she took as many art classes as possible. After a break for mission work, marriage, jobs and motherhood, she enrolled in a watercolor class with a local artist, and with mentorship from other local artists, she began a career in art in 2014. After seven years working exclusively in watercolor, she has begun exploring plein air painting and water-soluble oils, as well. She is an award-winning member of the Lancaster County Art Association and Lancaster Museum of Art.All visitors to the gallery will be screened and are required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth.United Zion Retirement Community is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz.
