WHS Prepares To Present “Magical Mystery Tour” BY ANN MEAD ASH

Normally, Warwick High School (WHS) band director Matthew Tenaglia brings marching band members together at the end of May to start learning marching basics in preparation for band camp later in the summer. This year was not normal. With students at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Tenaglia began having online meetings on Tuesday evenings in June and July to talk about marching, music, and the fall drill. When the planned drill was discarded, Tenaglia asked the more than 80 band members for suggestions. “They voted on the show they wanted to do,” recalled Tenaglia, who reported that “Magical Mystery Tour - The Music of the Beatles” was the No. 1 choice, followed by “Star Wars” and “The ’90s Boy Band Show.” When students began meeting at the field behind the school four days per week during the first three full weeks of August, a drill written by Scott Goebel had been prepared

to accompany a number of Beatles tunes. The show will open with “The Magical Mystery Tour Opener,” which includes some portions of “Penny Lane.” The ballad will combine “Blackbird” and “Yesterday,” followed by “Eleanor Rigby.” The show will close with “I Saw Her Standing There.” At this point, Tenaglia expects the marchers will perform the drill at home games. They will also take part in Cavalcade of Bands virtual adjudications. “We will be able to submit a video and get feedback to replace what would have been (live competitions),” said Tenaglia. “We are constantly seeking performance experiences for our students.” Several students will be spotlighted in the show. The 13 members of the color guard will have a feature at the beginning of the performance. Ethan Darling and Jett Lauer will have trumpet solos in “Magical Mystery Opener” and “Blackbird,” respectively. Seniors Noah Evans and Adam Ciampaglia will be featured on saxophone in

Lauren Waltz (top left) and Christian Kegel (top right) will serve as drum majors for the Warwick High School fall marching band show, which will feature the music of the Beatles.

It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. See Letter pg 10
