“Lumina is located in Lancaster. (The organization) works on houses and helping underprivileged individuals in Lancaster County,” said Nicky, who noted that LUMC members have helped with demolishing and rebuilding projects. “They have asked for cooking supplies for a cooking school that helps (those in need) to learn to use fresh products rather than reaching for fast food.” David said that the goal for the Peach Festival is to give at least $1,000 to the designated organization.Moreinformation about the church may be found at https://lititzumc.org.

When Todd Capitao, director of financial empowerment at Tenfold, got married, he and his wife realized they were not quite in control of their spending. “I went to the dollar store and got a ledger and started tracking expenses,” said Capitao, who has since graduated to a computer spreadsheet for this purpose. Each year, funds raised by the Peach Festival benefit a nonprofit organization. Past recipients have included local first responders, the Lititz Public Library, and Warwick Released Time. This year, funds will be directed to Lumina, an organization with a mission to “share the love of God by equipping and encouraging people who experience poverty and hardship.”
This summer, teams of teens took to the streets on bikes as part of Lifecycles, a Christian-based organization that works to build young men and women of character. Five teams participated in Summer Challenge Rides, which took them on trips ranging from six to 14 days long. “This is the most Challenge Rides we’ve ever done,” said Lee DeRemer, Lifecycles director. “We had more girls and boys in our program who were ready for a week way and were up for strenuous riding. We also had enough leaders willing to See Lifecycles pg 5
Food items available for purchase will include Peachy Paterno ice cream made by Penn State Berkey Creamery and fresh peach sundaes. Hot dogs and pork barbecue sandwiches will also be sold, along with a variety of baked goods such as brownies, chocolate chip cookies, and peach-flavored items.
Activities for children will include yard games and a special activity coordinated by the church education teacher. At 1:15 p.m., a candy scramble will be held on the hillside adjacent to the church. Beginning at noon, a silent auction will feature up to 50 donated items, including gift cards, a throw rug contributed by Adair’s Brunnerville Flooring, an Andy Smith print, theme baskets, and passes to the Kalahari Resorts Water Park in the Poconos. David reported that sports memorabilia will include a puck donated by the Philadelphia Flyers and an autographed photo from the Philadelphia Eagles. When the auction ends at 3 p.m., winners who are present may collect their item, and those who have left will be contacted.

Two years ago, Nicky Smith, organizer of the Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC) annual Peach Festival, along with her committee, canceled the event due to COVID-19 restrictions. A year ago, Smith canceled the event again, knowing that owners of businesses and others that donate were struggling to get back on their feet. For 2022, the way is clear to hold the event, and Nicky and her helpers, including her husband, David, are hard at work. This year’s Peach Festival will be held on Saturday, Sept. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. at the church, 201 E. Market St., Lititz. As in the past, the event will pay homage to all things peachy and include entertainment, kids’ activities, a silent auction, and plenty of food.Entertainment will be provided by LUMC contemporary worship leader Eric Fisher, who will perform beginning at noon. At 1:45 p.m., students of Cricket’s Performing Arts will take the stage.

BY ANN MEAD ASH
Just prior to March 19, Svitlana Shekh, living in the Donetsk region of Ukraine with her two young daughters, made the decision to leave. The war was intensifying. “Every night Russian fighter jets flew overhead,” she recalled. “We had spare clothing next to us (as we slept), so we could pick up and leave any minute.” On March 19, Svitlana drove the three to the Russian border. Donetsk has been under Russian occupation since 2014. The Shekhs crossed the Russian border and drove more than 1,500 miles north to the Latvian border, where Svitlana was advised to think hard about crossing because she would not be allowed to return. Svitlana’s husband, David, was waiting for her in Latvia, and she chose to go. David had been working in Germany as a ceramic tile installer. From Latvia, the family drove more than 1,200 miles to Germany, and from there they were able to fly to Boston, landing on JuneThe3.Shekhs came as part of a group of five families, but there are many more who want to leave Ukraine or are internally displaced persons and in need of help, according to Konstantin Reznik, a member of Bethany Slavik Church in Ephrata. The church has organized the Refugee Welcome Fundraising Dinner, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 16, at the Ephrata Business Center, 400 W. Main St., at 6 p.m. The meal will feature refugees sharing their stories and opportunities for attendees to sponsor families for housing, food, and transportation. Homemade foods that will be served will include borscht, katleti, and galupsi. Tickets, which are necessary to attend, may be obtained secondWarministrytransformed-dinner/2022-09-16.events/refugee-welcomewww.bethanyslavic.org/atRezniksaidthatthechurchitsmissionsintotheUkraineRefugeeAidFundonthedayoftheinvasionof
Ukraine and began raising money to help support those still in Ukraine and families that had come to the U.S. “The war is raging on even though it’s not on the front pages anymore,” said Reznik. “We are continuing to help evacuate people.” The Shekhs speak to family members in Ukraine daily. The current situation there is a stark contrast to the Shekhs’ new life in Ephrata. “There’s no public water,” translated Reznik, who noted that water is available twice a week for a few hours at a time. “You will not see any civilian men on the street,” Reznik said. “If a man walks outside, he will be conscripted to (serve on) the frontlines.” Most businesses are closed because there are no men to work. Women drive taxis or sell produce to support their families. Before Svitlana left, she and her mother took over her father’s meat deliveries because he could not go outside. Svitlana and David have avoided talking about the war in front of their children, but the situation did not go unnoticed by oldest daughter Nikol. While looking at a possible home in Ephrata, Nikol noticed the size of the basement. “Look how big the basement is,” she told her father. “It’s a great place to hide from the bombs.” “We tried to limit their exposure, but they still pick up (things),” said David, who noted the conversation brought tears to his eyes.

The club will meet Thursday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. This meeting, which is free and open to the public, will not be recorded. After a short business meeting, a representative of ZooAmerica will present “Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tails,” a program featuring live animals. At the meeting, Barbara Hunsberger will be honored for her 12 years of service as club president, which wrapped up this past spring. Board members from Appalachian Audubon Society in Harrisburg will provide an update on the Lights Out Harrisburg initiative, which protects birds during their migration by minimizing outdoor lighting during peak migration times. For more details on the meeting, call 717-856-3851 or sacrifice a week of their time to do this.” In total, the five rides included 42 teens and 30 adult leaders. One girls’ team and two boys’ teams participated in weeklong 300mile rides from Jersey Shore, Pa., to Niagara Falls. On those rides, participants passed by the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, Watkins Glen, the Finger Lakes and the Erie Canal Historic Trail. Additionally, one boys’ team rode 330 miles from the Pittsburgh area to Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C. The fifth ride was the longest, featuring a boys’ team that rode 825 miles over two weeks from Niagara Falls to Lubec, Maine. “They went to the Eastern-most point in the United States,” Lee noted. “They were the first people in the country to see the sunrise thatLee,morning.”whocreated Lifecycles in 2015, said he’s continually impressed with the dedication and drive of the riders. “I know how hard some of them had to push in order to finish,” he stated. “Not one boy or girl quit. Everybody rode every single mile.” Lee and his wife, Marcie, created Lifecycles to provide friendship, mentoring and bike riding, all with a faith focus. The organization is open to boys and girls ages 12 to 18. From April through August, boys’ and girls’ teams ride one night a week throughout Lancaster County.Although the season is wrapping up, the teams will continue with five weekend rides through October. The organization currently serves 130 teens in what Lee calls “overflowing” teams. “We want our teams to be large enough to provide a sense of community, but small enough to keep it safe and manageable,” he stated. He hopes to be able to increase the number of teams next year but noted that more leaders will be needed to do that. “We’ve been very blessed by more leaders joining us this year, and we’re going to need even more to continue,” he remarked, adding that’s he’s confident the right people will step up. “We live in an area where people really want to give back to their community.” In the meantime, he marvels at the success of the Summer Challenge Rides and the effort put in by the riders. “In eight years, nobody has quit along the way,” he said. “That’s a testimony to the teens and also to the quality of our leaders out there on those rides with them.” For more information about Lifecycles, contact Lee at director@lifecyclesteam.org or visit www.lifecyclesteam.org.

Tenfold director of financial empowerment Todd Capitao (third from left) and his team of financial counselors help clients gain financial literacy.
to practice what he preaches. Using a variety of apps combined with opportunity shopping and his spreadsheet, Capitao is on top of his family budget and happy to teach others how they can achieve that goal. “We have standard workshops,” said Capitao, who noted that before the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, classes were held in person. Now the classes are held virtually on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. and Thursdays at 10 a.m. “We do budget, credit, savings, lending, and banking,” said Capitao. “Those are the five cores, and they are very basic.” Capitao tells those considering taking classes that he recommends taking the budgeting class first. “That’s key,” he said. “You can’t properly save unless you areInbudgeting.”addition, each quarter that classes are held, a few electives are included. “It could be how to be more Earth conscious or how to buy a car or fraud,” Capitao said. “Those are things we try to review outside the standard ones.”Capitao explained that classes are taught with regard to student understanding. “The terms are defined,” he said, noting that students receive a book and that they may ask questions during classes verbally or via chat. He noted that classes are content driven and that those who are self-motivated can do well in them.According to Capitao, the best action to take following the classes is to sit down with a financial counselor either in person, virtually, or by telephone. “If we have 20 people in a virtual class, we cannot do 20 individual budgets,” he explained. “We will give (students) the tools and ideas and skills, but if (a student) has trouble or concerns doing a budget or handling credit, (they should) see us in person or virtually or by phone.” Before COVID-19, Tenfold personnel had dreamed of holding classes online, but now they would be happy to hold in-person classes again, and they welcome inquiries from organizations such as churches, ministries, businesses, and other that would like to host in-person classes. Pointing out the benefits of working with a counselor, Capitao noted that many people receive an extra paycheck twice a year that they do not always consider. “The counselors here have been able to assist people out of (the start of going into debt) because of that extra paycheck that isn’t on their radar,” he said. In the past, organizations, such as The Factory Ministries in Paradise, have offered rewards in the form of Factory Bucks to be used at The Factory Market, to participant who enroll in a class that effects their sustainability.Readerswho are interested in taking Tenfold financial literacy classes may register by visiting www.weareten fold.org and clicking on “events/classes.” Individuals who have questions may call 717-397-5182.

Old Zion German Reformed Church, 187 Reifsnyder Road, Lititz (Brickerville), will conduct its anniversary worship service on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 3 p.m. The event provides an opportunity to reflect on the church’s rich history. This year’s theme will be “Old Zion During the Revolution.” During the Revolutionary War, Old Zion, then known as Reyer’s German Reformed Church, served as a hospital for wounded soldiers following the Battle of Brandywine and the Philadelphia campaigns of 1777 to 1778. Revolutionary War veterans are believed to be buried in the cemetery.TheRev. William LaSalle will give the sermon, playing the part of the Rev. John Christopher Gobrecht, the pastor at Old Zion from 1770 to 1779. The worship service will include music and hymns from the period presented by vocal soloist Amanda Mrenna, music director at Bethany United Church of Christ in Ephrata, and organist JP Welliver, music director at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Penryn. Gary Meyers of the German Battalion and other Revolutionary War re-enactors will be present to offer a display of Revolutionary War equipment that soldiers might have carried during the war. Consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), masks are optional but are encouraged while indoors at Old Zion events. College sweethearts, they bonded over Scott’s 1968 Camaro, and for their 25th wedding anniversary, they specialordered a Camaro and drove it across Route 66. They noted that there’s something special about Corvette culture. “A Corvette is just the cream of American-built vehicles,” Scott said. “When you drive or ride in one, it’s a different experience than any other car. When you pass another Corvette driver on the road, you wave to each other.”Scott and Mary Anne emphasized that the American Legends car show is a fun day for everyone - participants and spectators alike. “It’s not a judged show,” Mary Anne said. “The awards are people’s choice, so every person who enters a car gets to vote.” She added that many of the car owners bring lawn chairs and sit by their cars. “People love to talk about their cars, and they encourage people to ask questions,” sheLaststated.year’s show drew about 140 cars, more than 100 of which were Corvettes. Some vehicles dated back to the 1940s. “We really embrace those,” Scott said. “We love it when people say, ‘Oh, my dad had a car like this.’ Or they say, ‘I had a Corvette, but I sold it when I had kids.’ We love to hear people reminisce.”
Scott and Mary Anne noted that the car show wouldn’t be possible without the support of the 100-plus-member Lancaster County Corvette Club. “We are so grateful for our club members who volunteer to help with this event,” Mary Anne said. “We couldn’t do it withoutPreregistrationthem.” for the car show is available for a discount before Saturday, Sept. 17. The Walk for D.E.S. (Detect. Early. Signs.), a suicide awareness and remembrance event, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10. The event, which will include a 5K walk/run, will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Manheim Township Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville. The Walk for D.E.S. is one of many ways to honor the life of someone who died by suicide, show support to survivors of suicide, forward the cause of suicide awareness and prevention across Lancaster County, and provide resources and tools aimed at preventing suicide. The goal is to save lives and restore hope through awareness, prevention, and intervention. It was founded by Mark Schantzer, whose son, Desmond, died by suicide.
