Friendship Heart Artists with CEO Mary Ellen Farber (eighth from right) and director of advancement Sherri Colton (fifth from left) outside the Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio

Earlier this year, the Friendship Heart Studio was offered an opportunity to create a mural on the side of Rachel’s Café and Creperie. Located at 201 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, this bright yellow building will now be the home of the studio’s second mural project. Beginning in September, Friendship Heart Artists and local partnered artists will begin a “Springtime in Paris” inspired design created by seven Heart Artists. The Heart Artists’ first mural project took place in September 2021, when some of the Heart Artists collaborated with local artists and Lancaster resident Colin Morrel in creating a work of art titled “The Garden” on the 300 block of North Mary Street in Lancaster city. Anyone who would like to support the current mural project financially or through volunteering may contact Crystal Freund, Day Services coordinator, at cfreund@friendshipcommunity.net or 717-656-2466. For updates and more information on the project, visit www.friendshipart.net/mural. Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is a faith-based, nonprofit gallery and state-licensed studio formed in 2007 to cultivate capabilities of individuals with intellectual disability and autism. The organization serves more than 50 individuals in the Lancaster and surrounding areas.

Area Contractors Recognized For Achieving Safety Standards

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the 2022 ABC STEP Safety Management System participants on Aug. 16 during ABC Keystone’s Safety Recognition Breakfast presented by Cohen Seglias Pallas Greenhall & Furman PC. During the recognition event, representatives from Keystone Chapter member companies had the opportunity to hear remarks from Kevin Chambers, area director, U.S. Department of Labor OSHA - Harrisburg area office.

Founded more than three decades ago, STEP is a program that aims to improve safety performance among construction industry participants. Ratings range from Diamond (the highest) to Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. STEP participants measure their safety processes and policies on key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs. To learn more about the STEP program, visit www.abcstep.org.

The top Diamond STEP level requires a company to maintain an incidence rate at least 50% below the national average at an EMR of .80 or lower. Local Diamond recipients are 11400 Inc., Lancaster; Commonwealth Fire Protection Co., Leola; and Leo Kob Co. Inc., Elizabethtown.

The Platinum Level is presented to those companies whose achievements in safety have been certified. These companies are eligible for ABC National Safety Award submission and have presented a higher-thanaverage standard for safety in the construction industry. Local Platinum recipients are Benchmark Construction Co. Inc., Brownstown; CCS Building Group, Willow Street; CLARK Inc., Paradise; Hursh Painting Co. Inc., Brownstown; Legacy Electrical Services Inc., Manheim; RSR Electric, A Viocity Company, Manheim; and Smucker Company, Leola.

To achieve Gold, each company had to not only meet the scoring component, but to have an incidence rate equal to or below the National Bureau of Labor Statistics average for the North American Industry Classification Systems code for that year. Local Gold recipients are Paul Risk Construction, Quarryville, and Warfel Construction Company, East Petersburg.

Local Silver recipients were CH+N Site Construction Inc., Lancaster; John E.

Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. (JBT) has announced that it has partnered with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to help their customers finance their higher education through the borrower-friendly PA Forward Student Loan Program.

The PA Forward Student Loan Program is a suite of loans for undergraduate and graduate students and parent borrowers. It is offered in addition to a PA Forward Refinance Loan that enables participating borrowers to combine all their federal and private loans into one monthly payment.

Through the program, JBT clients can borrow up to the total cost of attendance with competitive interest rates and a variety of upfront and repayment benefits.

The PA Forward Student Loan Program leverages the combined resources of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to provide loans at competitive rates with borrower benefits. PHEAA serves as the lender and loan servicer for the program, with tax-exempt allocation provided by the Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED).

The PA Forward Student Loan Program is designed specifically for students or parents/guardians of students who are enrolled or who plan to be enrolled in a degree, certificate or diploma granting program. For parent loans, the student must be enrolled at least halftime. Students enrolled for less than half-time also have borrowing options. These loans are meant for Pennsylvania residents attending an approved school in or out of Pennsylvania; students from an approved state, including Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia attending an approved Pennsylvania school; U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens of the U.S.; and borrowers and/or co-signers who meet the minimum credit requirements.

The PA Forward Student Loan Program includes four student loan products: a PA Forward Undergraduate Loan for students seeking an undergraduate degree, certificate or diploma; a PA Forward Graduate Loan for students seeking an advanced degree such as master’s, doctoral, law or health profession; a PA Forward Parent Loan for parents or guardians of dependent undergraduate students seeking an undergraduate degree, certificate or diploma; and a PA Forward Refinance Loan for borrowers in repayment seeking a more streamlined way to manage their debt by combining all their federal and private student loans into a single monthly payment under new terms and conditions.

The program offers competitive fixed interest rates and borrower benefits for undergraduate and graduate loan borrowers, including a .50% interest rate reduction for achieving successful graduation. Additional benefits for all borrowers include no application or origination fees, a .25% interest rate reduction for enrolling in Direct Debit, flexible repayment options and biweekly payment options that can pay off a loan sooner, saving borrowers even more money in interest.

PHEAA’s earnings from the PA Forward Student Loan Program are used to support the agency’s public service mission for Pennsylvania students and families. For more information, visit www.jbt.bank or contact Jennifer Crain at 717-450-1222.
