“I thought of Gibbs right away,” said Zoccola of the then 6-monthold golden retriever being raised by volunteer Molly McGovern. A year later, Gibbs began training with Capers the week of July 18. Zoccola chose Gibbs for the job based on his outgoing personality and low-key disposition. “He has a really strong social desire,” said Zoccola, who noted that she selects dogs for assignments in accordance with their strengths rather than trying to change their natural inclinations.

“If a dog wants to interact, and we have introduced him to impulse control, I want to give him that type of career,” explained Zoccola, who pointed out that Gibbs functions well with children and with crowds. “(Crowds) don’t make him nervous,” she said. BY ANN MEAD ASH When Wally Calderon, director of the Servant Stage production of “Ragtime,” first saw the production in 1999, he knew he wanted to direct it. Now, as the cast of about 50 rehearses, he looks forward to bringing the musical to the local stage. “The challenges of ‘Ragtime’ are in its strong content,” said Calderon, who quickly added, “(The show) leaves you with hope for a future where there can be harmony and unity.”

“It’s a great course, and we can (accommodate) a lot of (runners),” said Ron Stief, program director with the Lititz recCenter. Stief noted that the Pretzel Twist course was changed in 2018 to place it more in the borough and less along farmland roads. This year, Stief hopes to see 250 runners complete the event. The 45th annual Pretzel Twist 5K will start at the recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Saturday, Sept. 17. Day-of registration will begin at 7 a.m., and the run will start at 8 a.m. A special 1-mile kids’ run will be held at 7:45 a.m. Stief said the course is fast. “If you are looking to get a personal best, this is the 5K,” he said. The route leaves the recCenter and goes up Spruce Street through Sutter Village and into the Warwick Woodlands. Stief pointed out there is one slight hill on Marion Street. The only water stop is located near the 2-mile mark, but the configuration of the course causes runners to pass it twice. Because it travels through neighborhoods, the route is often lined with local spectators. “It’s kind of cool that people are out cheering and encouraging the runners,” Stief Memberssaid.of the Lititz Borough Police Department will man the course, and Warwick School District sports team members will volunteer to help Teamsout.of four, made up of all males, all females, or mixed with two and two, are encouraged. Calderon called “Ragtime” “colorful,” noting that the show is mostly sung and includes historical figures such as Harry Houdini, vaudeville entertainer Evelyn Nesbit, and J.P. Morgan. “These characters are woven through the story to tell us these things actually occurred,” he said, pointing out that the Henry Ford character sings a song about conveyor belts that discusses how mass production has begun to speed up manufacturing. Even the ragtime music itself would soon be sped up into jazz. The cast includes several children, and Calderon noted that this is intentional. “(The) children are sort of a representation of the new century in the things they say and the way they act,” he said. Although the groups represent different peoples and experiences, Calderon emphasized what they have in common. “All the parents relate to Tateh and his Little Girl and his fear of losing her, and they find themselves relating to Mother, who is feeling a pull to become something (more),” he said. “In the final picture, it shows members of each of those groups together and https://servantstage.org/shows.Reservationswill,Performanceshopeful.”arepay-what-you-anddonationsarewelcome.maybemadeat
Calderon noted that the story focuses on a specific moment in time and what lies ahead. “It follows these groups on their journeys when they are starting to intermingle,” said Calderon. “It’s a story about the last moments when these groups were so separate and so foreign to one another. It comes with a lot of sensitive issues, and the biggest challenge is communicating to the audience that it’s not something that only happened 120 years ago.”
When Brian Boycan, senior development officer with HOPE International, visited Rwanda in July along with HOPE president Peter Greer, he met a woman named Clementine who was growing her wholesaling business with the help of the organization. “Clementine started in 2012 with a group loan of $1,000,” recounted Boycan. With that loan, Clementine bought Irish potatoes in bulk and resold them in smaller quantities. Since then she has expanded her line to include flour and tea, and her most recent loan of $45,000 will help her to continue to grow the business and build a home. Helping enterprising women like Clementine through microfinance and savings groups are ways HOPE helps change narratives. HOPE also teaches farmers to be good stewards of the land. Jeff Rutt, who founded the organization 25 years ago, was recently in Ukraine. He said that HOPE has been helping farmers there with expenses and focusing on relief, restructuring, and rebuilding. Since the invasion, he noted, “the needs are great and the opportunities to help are incredible.”

Earlier this year, the Friendship Heart Studio was offered an opportunity to create a mural on the side of Rachel’s Café and Creperie. Located at 201 W. Walnut St., Lancaster, this bright yellow building will now be the home of the studio’s second mural project. Beginning in September, Friendship Heart Artists and local partnered artists will begin a “Springtime in Paris” inspired design created by seven Heart Artists. The Heart Artists’ first mural project took place in September 2021, when some of the Heart Artists collaborated with local artists and Lancaster resident Colin Morrel in creating a work of art titled “The Garden” on the 300 block of North Mary Street in Lancaster city. Anyone who would like to support the current mural project financially or through volunteering may contact Crystal Freund, Day Services coordinator, at cfreund@friendshipcommunity.net or 717-656-2466.
