COBYS Family Services’ Bike and Hike fundraiser is a great many things to a great many people.
“Bike and Hike is really a broad event,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS Family Services director of development and communications for six years. “It’s not just one thing. There are several different ways for people to participate. However it makes sense for them. But what it’s really all about is spending time together and celebrating all the services COBYS provides.”
COBYS Family Services will present the 29th edition of its annual Bike and Hike event in Lititz from noon to 3 p.m. on

Executive director Jennifer West stated that Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster-Lebanon is designed to help girls achieve whatever goals they set.
“We like to say girls join for 100 different reasons,” she said. “Some like to get faster in a sport on their offseason. Some are new to the area, and they want to make friends. Some have friends, and they just want to have a really great time. You can be from any area and when you participate in Girls on the Run, you are going to get out of it exactly what you need.”
GOTR Lancaster-Lebanon is a registered 501(c)(3) organization that serves girls in third through eighth grades in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. West said that since forming in 2009, the council has impacted nearly 24,000 girls through locally delivered GOTR, Heart & Sole, and Camp GOTR programs.
Registration for the fall season will be open through Saturday, Sept. 13. Go to www.gotr lancaster.org for more details or to register.
There is a fee to participate, but GOTR has several financial assistance plans and payment options. Registration includes 20 practice sessions conducted by certified and trained GOTR volunteer coaches, curriculum and lesson materials and a takehome journal with activities, an official GOTR season T-shirt and gift, and 5K registration and a medal.
Each team will do a community impact project. “It’s very important to give back to the space
We are looking for volunteers to visit with patients receiving hospice care in your local community.
Our next orientation is:

where you live so each team picks something that they can do for the school or for the community or for emergency services,” West said. GOTR teams typically practice twice a week for 10 weeks, and the season will culminate with a celebratory 5K on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field.
“By participating in Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon programs, girls learn to raise the bar, to use their voices for positive and effective change, to become empowered leaders over their lives, as well as in their communities, and to simply be the best version of their already extraordinary selves,” West said.
Girls on the Run Lancast -
er-Lebanon was founded in 2009. “A friend (Carrie Johnson) and I got together, and she said, ‘This thing called Girls on the Run looks fantastic,’” said West. “‘It’s an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grades. We talk about self-esteem being the best version of yourself that you can be, standing up for yourself and others, and character development.’ At the time, we both had girls in third and fifth grade, and it was fantastic.”
The first team consisted of 25 girls in Hempfield and now GOTR teams are in every single school district in Lancaster and four of the six districts in Lebanon.
“We have been growing by leaps
and bounds every single year,” West said. “Lancaster and Lebanon counties have been such a welcoming community. It’s absolutely amazing to see the support from donors and sponsors but also from the families that trust us enough to allow us to spend this time with their daughters. It’s just absolutely unbelievable.”
GOTR is for girls of every ability. “You don’t have to run to be in the program,” said West. “That is a common misconception because we’re called Girls on the Run, but it’s really about moving forward. We say you can hop, roll, skip, or jump your way to the finish line.”
West noted that the program offers an ideal time to bond with teammates. “The girls will talk about everything from being a good friend to stopping and take a breather before you respond to texts and social media,” she said. “We talk about peer pressure and how can you be the best friend and what qualities do you look for in a friend. It’s so much fun for the girls and it really does introduce them to a lifelong love of being physically active. When you are walking or jogging or running side by side with somebody and you’re having conversations and being silly and having a good time, you’re not thinking about whether you’re jogging or walking.”
There are approximately 600
volunteer coaches a year. “We can’t run the program without volunteers,” said West. “One of our biggest hurdles when it comes to providing the program is recruiting our volunteer coaches. It is a pretty big commitment because the season is so long. But without our volunteer coaches, we can’t support teams at different sites. We look for those individuals who want to be in that mentorship state with girls and support them in terms of their growth and development.”
Women, men, and high school girls can all help with the coaching. Anyone interested in volunteering can email GOTR program director Kylie Homan at kylie.homan@girlsontherun.org.
“Girls on the Run has a nationally recognized training program for our coaches,” said West. We want to make sure they’re equipped with everything they need to serve the girls the best they can.” Each GOTR athlete will compete with a buddy in the season-ending 5K. The buddy must register for the race and be 16 years old or older. “The buddies are there to keep encouraging them to go at their pace,” said West. “It can be a family friend, it can be a teacher, it can be a neighbor.”
GOTR is also seeking volunteers for the 5K. “We need hundreds of volunteers to be in cheer zones and people to make it fun and help keep it safe,” said West.

development organization for boys and young men,” said Steve Tyer, who’s been Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316’s membership chairman for nine years. “Our goal is to create a generation of responsible young men, fathers, husbands and employees. It’s a Christ-centered adventure program. We want participants to grow up to be good stewards of what God has given them.”
Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316 will host its initial open house from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7, at Cornerstone Church, 80 W. Brubaker Valley Road, Lititz. The free event, which is designed to inform prospective participants about what Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316 has to offer, will be conducted in a large tent on the grounds of the church and include drinks, light refreshments, a bounce
house, face painting and balloon animals.
“A lot of people in the community just don’t know about Trail Life USA and that we have a local troop,” said Tyer, a resident of Lititz. “We want to reach out to every family in the community and say, ‘We’re Trail Life USA, here are our values.’ We want to make everyone aware of who we are; we love who we are. Trail Life is not just for boys, but also for the fathers. We see the fathers get out of it just as much as the boys.”
Troop PA-0316’s open house will feature a handful of informal educational stations manned by instructors. Visitors can learn about tenting and campsites, campfires, knot tying and cooperation through a tug-of-war team-building exercise.
As they leave, visitors will be asked about what they learned and

invited to attend Troop PA-0316’s regular meeting the following evening, Monday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m. at Cornerstone Church.
“(The open house) is laid back, it’s fun, it’s informal,” said Tyer. “Adults can talk to other adults. Kids can talk to other kids. It’s going to be a relaxed atmosphere.”
Established locally in 2013, Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316 is a para-Scouting program designed to serve boys in kindergarten through 18 years of age residing in central and northern Lancaster County and Lebanon County. The troop meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on the first, second and third Mondays of each month at Cornerstone Church.
There are dues associated with becoming a member of the troop, but no one will be turned away for financial reasons.
Troop PA-0316 goes camping, hiking and backpacking. It also takes field trips; sight-seeing excursions; and educational behind-the-scenes tours of businesses, emergency service organizations and nonprofits.
“All of these different activities are fun, but they’re educational as well,” said Tyer. “We hope (the boys) learn an understanding of who they are in God’s world. We want them to have a better understanding of how they fit in with what God’s created. We want them to use these skills for the rest
of their lives and to lead others to Christ.”
Trail Life USA Troop PA-0316 is made up of 40 boys, 16 fathers, moms and grandparents from 24 families who reside in Lititz, Manheim Township, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Penn Manor and Lebanon. The troop is broken down into patrols based on ages, and older members are encouraged to take on leadership, organizational and planning roles.
“They are boys who love adventure, exploration and the outdoors,” said Tyer. “It doesn’t mean they are experienced. They might not have learned all the skills of the outdoors, but they have the heart and interest.”
PA-0316 is one of over 1,200 Trail Life USA troops spread across all 50 states in the country. Lancaster County is home to Trail Life USA troops in Ephrata and Quarryville.
“Our boys come from a multitude of backgrounds,” said Tyer. “Even their Christian backgrounds are night and day. These boys come in and drive the program. We see transformation in the boys when they stay with the program. They become these young servant leaders, and they don’t even realize it’s happening.”

Five entrepreneurs have been selected to take the stage at the 2025 Great Social Enterprise Pitch on Thursday, Sept. 4, at Zoetropolis Cinema Stillhouse, 112 N. Water St., Lancaster. The finalists will pitch their ideas to receive up to $10,000 in funding.
Sunday, Sept. 7. The event will consist of a 10-mile and a 25-mile bike ride, a 3-mile walk, a 1.5-mile Tasty Tour and a festivities-concluding ice cream social - because everyone always has room for ice cream.
“The best thing about the Bike and Hike is the way you get to have fun and at the same time do good things for your community,” said Stokes. “You get to come as you are. What’s really special is that everyone comes together after the event and learns how COBYS is making a difference in the community.”
All the festivities included with Bike and Hike will originate from Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The event will begin at noon with the 25-mile bicycle ride registration and start, followed by the check-in and start of the Tasty Tour of four downtown confectionary stops - Dosie Dough, Café Arabella, CAVOLO! and Slate Café - at 1 p.m.
Registration and the start of the 10-mile bicycle ride and the 3-mile walk will also begin at 1 p.m. Then, at 2:45 p.m. the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration will begin on the grass behind Lititz Church of the Brethren.
“The Bike and Hike is a very relaxed event,” said Stokes. “The COBYS staff warmly greets you and checks you in. The Incredible Ice Cream Celebration is a time for all the participants to come together. We use that time to talk about all the great things going on at COBYS.”
More than 300 individuals, family members and community members are expected to attend.
“It’s really everybody, just like our community,” said Stokes of the participants. “It’s people of all ages, because that’s what it takes to support the committed human care that we provide. It’s people who have supported us for a long time. It’s some of our foster families. It’s
a lot of donors and supporters. It might be people who have heard about us from a neighbor or a friend.”
Organizers of the Bike and Hike fundraiser are hoping to realize $100,000 in proceeds for COBYS Family Services. Since its inception, the event has raised more than $2.5 million for the organization, which provides foster, adoption and counseling services in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland and Schuylkill Counties.
“The money will go toward our overall operating expenses,” said Stokes. “The ultimate goal is to make sure COBYS has continued resources to support our work throughout the year. Without these financial resources, the COBYS organization wouldn’t be able to provide the services it does day in and day out. Throughout the year, things pop up. When we need funds for things like fostering and counseling, the money is there.”
COBYS, which operates offices at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster, and at 134 E. King St., Lancaster, was founded in 1996 and employs more than 90 staff members across all of its programs. COBYS Family Services conducts or benefits from five other annual fundraisers and also receives financial support through fees for services, a variety of grants, private donations and state and county resources.
“Our mission is to educate and empower children and adults to reach their full potential,” said Stokes. “We care about our clients in their times of need. We can’t always fix all the problems, but we know we can treat people with dignity, compassion and hope. There are critical needs in our community, and COBYS Family Services is an agency to meet those needs. If you value those things, we hope you’ll join us at Bike and Hike to make that care happen.” For additional information, go to www.cobys.org.
