BY ANN MEAD ASH In 1973, Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, held its first chicken barbecue, an event that would come to be known as Fellowship Days, which now includes a benefit auction, food, presentations, yard and craft sales, a talent show, a parade, and children’s activities. The event now benefits the Caring Fund, which was created in 1983 to help Landis Homes residents who had exhausted their financial resources. Landis Homes

Weekdays from Aug. 1 through 4 from 2 to 9 p.m., the nearly 85 members of the Warwick High School (WHS) marching band focused not on the heat, but on “Pictures Reframed” as they practiced the show based on “Pictures at an Exhibition,” originally an orchestral piece.

Terry decided to start a group locally, so he drove from Gettysburg to the Lyndon Diner in Lancaster. “I told (representatives of the Lyndon Diner) what I wanted to do, and they offered the back room,” said Terry, who noted that at first attendees ordered off the menu. “For the first meeting, 23 showed up,” said Terry, who added that three of those still attend. The Vets Breakfast Club now meets on the third Saturday of each month at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant and Smorgasbord, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-inHand. Due to a conflict, the meeting on Saturday, Sept. 17, will be See Vets Breakfast Club

Several years ago, Navy veteran Bill Terry wore his Navy cap to a rally in Gettysburg. Someone took note of his service and asked if he went to the monthly veterans breakfast in Gettysburg. “I had never heard of it or been there,” saidNotTerry.long after that conversation, Terry made the hour-and-45-minute trip to Gettysburg to attend a breakfast. “(The veterans) had been meeting 12 to 15 years,” reported Terry. “I thought, ‘We don’t have anything like this in Lancaster.’”

BY ANN MEAD ASH

WHS band director Matthew Tenaglia explained that the show is in three movements - an opener, a ballad, and a closer. “‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ is a major symphonic work, but we are modernizing it by adding a marching band flair,” he said, noting that the drill is based on a play on words, with marchers forming boxes on the field. “(The show) will be very linear based,” he said, adding that band members will be creating pictures inside the boxes. He stated that the music is more loud and aggressive than pieces the band has used previously. The show will highlight the work of specific band members in a woodwind feature, a brass feature, and two drum breaks. The 10 color guards will spin 6-foot flags during the drill. Drum major Hayden Milchanowski said that the “coolest thing” about the show is the music, which he enjoys more as a conductor than as a musician. “I am hearing it from a listening perspective,” said Milchanowski, who added that he is challenged by remembering all the measures and set numbers. Band members have responded to the music with enthusiasm. Woodwind captain Maggie Turner noted that it has been fun to turn a recognizable classical piece into a marching band tune. Fellow woodwind captain Jack Haught said that the music will have “pizzazz.” “What we’re doing with the marching music will jazz it up a bit,” said Turner.

According to Terry, most of the attendees are Vietnam War veterans. “We had three or four World War II vets who have passed away,” he noted, adding that some Korean War veterans have attended and that he is starting to see veterans from the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. “We had reservations for 72,” he said at the July 16 meeting. “But we get from 90 to 120, so we set up for 90 today.” “We always have the POW table set up and nobody sits there,” said Terry of the traditional table set with a white tablecloth, a single candle, an inverted glass, and a single red rose in a vase. Currently, Terry said, two benefactors are covering breakfast for the veterans, but he noted that sponsorships are welcome.

BY CATHY MOLITORIS Pleasant View Communities has been holding a golf tournament fundraiser for more than a decade, and the event always receives positive feedback, said Aubrey Smith, community engagement and development coordinator for Pleasant View. “We have some people who have participated since the event started,” she commented. “Everyone says it’s a good time, and it’s very well organized. I love hearing people say this is one of their favorite tournaments of the year and knowing that golfers look forward to it everyThisyear.”year’s tournament will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Registration will start at noon, and the tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The event will feature two meals, 18 holes of golf and a variety of prizes. “Lunch is provided by the Pleasant View auxiliary,” Smith noted. “They usually do hot dogs, chips and drinks, and then our dinner is provided by Nutrition Management Services and is a barbecue dinner.” Prizes will be awarded for the longest drive, the straightest drive, the top women’s team and the top men’s team. Proceeds from the golf tournament will benefit the benevolent care fund at Pleasant View. “This fund helps pay for residents who live here at Pleasant View who have exhausted all of their financial resources,” Smith explained. “The fund is supported by donors who keep it replenished for anyone who needs it.” She said Pleasant View provides $3 million in support to residents annually through the benevolent care fund, noting that memory care at the personal care level can cost upward of $300 a day. The benevolent care fund supplements or funds entirely care for approximately 25% of personal care residents and close to 50% of skilled nursing residents’ care. In addition to entry fees from the tournament, funds will also be raised through a basket giveaway at the event. Basket items include Vera Bradley bags, art, gift cards for local establishments and a handmade charcuterie board created by a Pleasant View staff member, Smith said. She noted that people may register for the golf tournament individually or by group of four and that people may attend the dinner only at Overlook for a separate fee. Along with teaching and painting, Frattali participates in numerous national and international water media competitions each year. She has achieved Signature Status with Philadelphia Watercolor Society, Baltimore Watercolor Society, Watercolor Society of Alabama and Louisiana Watercolor Society. She also served as a board member of the Pennsylvania Watercolor Society. Watson is a self-taught artist who has loved art from a young age. Even when she worked as a nurse, she painted and took local art classes in her free time. As her art activities took off, she made art and teaching art into a full-time career. She has exhibited in major art competitions and museums and has been published in national magazines. She concentrates in painting the world around her in a realism style. This exhibit will showcase works that are primarily quick demonstrations done for classes. Watson said that she often chooses subjects based on the lighting in the scene. All visitors to the art gallery will be screened and are required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth. UZRC is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz. Wes Newswanger with one of the live-edge wooden items he crafted for the Landis Homes Fellowship Days auction. Elvin Stoltzfus crafted segmented bowls and restored a Benjamin Brubaker Dollhouse (bottom photo) to help raise funds.

Landis Homes residents have used their talents to create items to be auctioned. Jackie Myers has made several quilt tops. Standing near an orange, blue, and white Wentworth pattern quilt and one with an abstract pattern of Canada geese she completed, Myers told of how she and her family received help in the form of quilts at their home in Belgium following World War II. As a child of 6, she found herself wanting to learn quilting. She came to America in 1961, but she did not learn quilting until she retired. “I started to make them to give back from what we had gotten,” said Myers. Wes Newswanger taught industrial arts at Lancaster Mennonite High School. When he came to Landis Homes, he put his talents to work building benches and coffee tables using live-edge cherry wood. “I would call it a bucket bench or a porch bench,” said Newswanger of one piece he made. A coffee table he calls River of Glass, which features two pieces of live edge cherry held together by metal and covered with glass, will also be auctioned.

Three years ago, organizers began spreading the festivities out over several days. An online auction of items will begin on Sunday, Sept. 4, and end at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11. The auction may be accessed by visiting www.landishomes.org and clicking on “Fellowship Days.”

Elvin Stoltzfus worked on a number of pieces that will be go up for bids. Stoltzfus was tapped to refurbish a Benjamin Brubaker dollhouse with parquet floors made up of 7,000 individual pieces. Stoltzfus had the skills to work on the house because he began working on segmented bowls and other wooden items in 2015. He is contributing several of his works to the auction. “I cut all these pieces out, and they have to be glued together in layers and put on the lathe,” Stoltzfus explained. “I was fascinated with this (process), and I started turning (pieces) out.”

A tent will be erected in front of the Crossings area of the campus, and on Wednesday, Sept. 7, a by-donation pancake breakfast will be served from 8 to 10 a.m. Later that day, an ice cream social and a hymn sing will be held. Friends of the Woods and Wetlands will give a presentation at 6 p.m., which will be repeated at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 8. On Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m., a parade featuring the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile will be held. The live music that evening will be based on a Liederkrantz theme with songs in German and English. On Saturday, Sept. 10, yard sales and a craft sale will be held, and food items will be sold. Children’s activities will be held, and quilts will go over the block at a live auction from 1 to 2:30 p.m. From 5 to 8 p.m., the Brass Pocket Band will play and there will be a 50th anniversary celebration with cupcakes.

“Everyone carries a picture of someone who didn’t make it,” said Scott Yuill, a member of the East Petersburg Fire Company for almost 50 years. “You’re symbolically finishing the climb that they weren’t able to.” Yuill has assisted with the event for 12 years and first became involved as a way to honor a friend and fellow firefighter who was killed during the collapse of the World Trade Center. The proceeds from the event will benefit the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, with funds directly supporting counseling services for the New York fire Department. Counseling is still offered for those who lost loved ones on 9/11. Those who wish to contribute to the foundation may donate at the event or online. The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation was created by Congress in 1992 to drive a nationwide effort to honor those killed in the line of duty. The foundation has since conceptualized multiple programs to accomplish its mission and sponsors memorial stair climbs similar to Lancaster’s across the country. A grant from the Department of Justice contributes to programs specifically made for families of fallen firefighters, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology partners with the foundation to research methods that may prevent death and injuries among firefighters in the line of duty. “The stair climb gives people a chance to remember and to learn,” said Yuill. “The attack happened over 20 years ago now. There are several participants that weren’t even born yet. This gives them the chance to learn and a chance for those who do remember to honor the sacrifices made that day.” The stair climb draws firefighters from multiple states to complete the symbolic journey, fully dressed in their uniforms and equipment. Last year’s climb also featured an appearance by the Philadelphia Eagles’ cheerleading squad.Toregister for the event or contribute to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, visit stairclimb.org/.https://lancaster & sewer, natural gas hot water, forced air heat, new granite countertops, new fridge, wood-burning fireplace. Health Screening Slated

Civil Air Patrol cadets Slater Shannon (left), Trevor Jones (center) and Aaron Keohane received promotions. As part of its effort to provide patients with comprehensive health care services, the Allergy & Asthma Center, 2445 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will offer a free screening program to test for alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, sometimes called Alpha-1. Screenings will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 14, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Individuals should call the office at 717-393-1365 to schedule an appointment. Alpha-1 is a rare genetic (inherited) condition. It may result in serious lung disease in adults and/or liver disease at any age, and it is the No. 1 known genetic risk factor for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Alpha-1 testing is recommended by the American Thoracic Society (ATS), the American College of Chest Physicians (CHEST), the COPD Foundation, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease. Patients who might consider this screening include those with COPD, emphysema and chronic bronchitis; asthma that does not respond well to treatment; a family history of AAT deficiency; or a family member with one of the previously listed diseases. BY CATHY MOLITORIS As the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, Heather Lindsey believes in the power of art. She also believes in collaboration. She’ll bring the two together for the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase. Scheduled to open on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, the exhibit is currently accepting entries. The showcase is open to any medium of art, and Lindsey said the theme is also open for interpretation. “It’s about, ‘What does time mean to you?’” she stated. “Since it’s happening in January, that’s when people think about time - the new year, the beginning. I think also as we’ve gone through COVID, a lot of people have reevaluated what’s important to them, and that can be reflected in their art.” The showcase will be held at the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St., Manheim, which recently underwent renovation and expanded to include an art gallery and tasting room for 2D Distillery on the second floor. Lindsey noted that the art event would not be possible without the support of the Brick House, which will be providing catered hors d’oeuvres for the opening reception, as well as 2D Distillery, which will provide tastings at that event. “The opening reception is bringing together three things people love - art, food and drinks,” Lindsey noted, emphasizing that the showcase is a collaborative effort between the three businesses. The reception will also feature music from a violinist and performances from Balance Dance.Lindsey encourages anyone with a passion for art to enter the showcase. “Art is so subjective, so people can enter anything they want that fits the theme,” she said. “My heart is for the showcase to be geared toward up-and-coming artists who don’t have the resources or contacts for a big gallery opening.” She noted that three pieces to be spotlighted in the window at the Brick House will be selected by herself, Brick House manager Christa Neville and 2D manager Joanie Kretzer. Lindsey’s goal is to offer an art showcase every other month throughout the year in the Brick House gallery space. She’s starting with a soft opening of the concept in September and October. That showcase will feature a sunflower theme. “I just want to support artists and give people access to beautiful art,” Lindsey said. “I want the art showcase to be welcoming to everyone.”Formore information on entering art in the “Interpretation of Time” showcase, missionspieces.Artistshncinspirationz@gmail.com.emailmayenteruptosixThedeadlineforsub-isSaturday,Oct.1.
