Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County are seeing stars

Scienceis all around us. And for some, the best way to get in touch with the coolest science is to simply look up.

The members of Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) were so enamored of the study of the stars that they formed their own club.

Sixty members strong, the AELC meets for two evening hours on the first Wednesday of every month in the community room of the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Members of the club derive great enjoyment from observing the night sky, exploring it and sharing information pertaining to it.

“(Astronomy is) the oldest science,” said AELC’s treasurer, Tom Lugar. “Ancients would look to the stars for answers. It’s something that goes back to a time when men looked up to the sky to see stars. It incorporates all the other sciences.”

Disc golf is no different from any other sport in that it can serve as both a competition and a recreational activity. During the course of competition, players benefit from exercise, stress release and being outdoors.

Played with discs hurled through the air, disc golf is similar to traditional golf in that each attempt is counted and the low score wins. The object of the game is to get the disc into a basket. Many disc golf courses are located in municipal parks and are free to play, and it can take up to four

typically reserved for discussion. But the AELC also meets once or twice a month outside to observe celestial phenomena as a group, and the club also participates in outreach events across Lancaster County and beyond.

Many members of the AELC own complex equipment used to visually explore space, like telescopes, binoculars and even observatories.

“The goal is to get people interested in astronomy and what’s going on in space,” said Lugar, a 76-year-old resident of Lititz. “It’s about people who like to do observing getting together.”

The popularity of astronomy exploded in the 1960s and 1970s with the space race and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s landing on the moon. But while we as a species know more about supernovas, eclipses and black holes than we did back then, there is seemingly an infinite amount of information about space that is still left to discover.

“There’s a lot happening in the night sky that people aren’t seeing anymore,” said Lugar. “The night sky is one of our natural resources,

but now you can’t see it because there’s light pollution. Our goal is to inform the public that there’s a lot going on in the night sky if you know where to look and know where to go.”

As a club, the AELC was formed in the late 1980s by a dozen scienceminded individuals at the North Museum of Nature and Science in Lancaster. The club’s numbers grew in the early 2000s before the AELC relocated its home base to the Lititz Public Library about a decade ago.

“I think the club has reached a point where it should be,” said Lugar. “Some people want to see the lectures and learn, and they may not be interested in seeing the night sky. Then there’s a hardcore group of guys who have a lot of money invested. It’s reached a point where it’s become a place for everyone.”

A 66-year-old resident of Elizabeth T ownship, Elden Weaver was introduced to disc golf relatively late in life. He plays much of his disc golf right down the road from his home, at Elizabeth Township Community Park, 116 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz.

“A lot of times I ride my electric scooter up the road to play,” said Weaver. “It’s fun. It can be relaxing after a hard day of work. You can easily fit in a round in the evening after work. If you enjoy the outdoors, it’s a really good sport to get into. It’s not super strenuous, but you still get your exercise.”

It seems that disc golf, both as a sport and as a recreational activity, has gained popularity in Lancaster County.

“Before I was really into it, I really didn’t pay too much attention to it,” Weaver said. “It seems like since I’ve been playing, it’s become a little more popular than before.”

He added, “Almost any course I go to there are quite a few

people playing.”

Nine years ago, Weaver’s son and son-in-law surprised him with a round of disc golf for his birthday. He said that he’s been hooked on it ever since.

“It definitely takes a lot of practice to be consistent,” said Weaver. “Seventy-five percent of the time I play by myself. When I can get (my son and son-in-law) to play with me, it’s a little better. I’m a mediocre player, but I try my best for sure. I beat

Elizabeth Township Community Park is one of six disc courses in Lancaster County that Weaver has played. He has also played at courses in Dauphin and Lebanon counties.

Situated on the periphery of the park’s walking trail, the Elizabeth Township Commu-

nity Park disc golf course was installed about seven years ago. The nine-hole course plays to a par of 27, and players can be challenged by its hilly terrain, tight fairways and shifting wind patterns.

“I’d rate it as a nine out of 10,” said Weaver. “It’s a nice course. It’s kept up. It’s a challenge, but not particularly difficult.”

Landis Valley to reopen historic house

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum will reopen the ground floor of the 1815 Brick Farm House on Friday, Sept. 1. The building has been closed for repairs, and the project was delayed due to the museum’s

The interior work included re-securing historic ceiling plaster to its lath, repairing water damage to walls, and painting all of the walls and woodwork. New exhibit panels tell the story of the generations of the Landis family that lived in the house as well as other facets of life in Landis Valley. In addition, the front porch was rebuilt, and the rain gutters were replaced.

Prior to the building’s closure, it could only be viewed during a tour or when staffed. The house will now reopen as a self-guided building.

“Foster parents are definitely our greatest need right now,” said Stokes. “We need people to say yes to taking an older child into their home. They have to be licensed to be foster parents, and we provide trauma-focused training. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s the future of a child. It’s a big challenge and a big reward.”

Ability to understand and carry out facility policies and procedures; knowledge of state and federal regulations required. Current CPR/First Aid certification required. Knowledge of and experience in conflict resolution. Ability to remain composed in an emergency and ability to give direction and guidance under stressful situations required.
