Raising Funds And Raising Awareness
CLOTHING GIVEAWAY
When Mark Schantzer’s son, Desmond, known as “Des,” died by suicide in 2011, Mark and his family, including wife Debbie and daughter Danielle, were blindsided. “We didn’t see or know any signs,” shared Mark. “We didn’t have money for a funeral. You don’t think about that cost.” In response, the family founded the nonprofit DES Foundation and coordinates the annual Walk for D.E.S., which raises funds to promote suicide prevention and awareness and to aid families who have lost loved ones to suicide. Funds may help pay for counseling in addition to funeral costs. “It depends on the need,” said Mark.
29 Green Acre Road, Lititz, will host a free clothing giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 7 to 11 a.m. Gently used clothing will be available for men, women and children. Call 717-626-2560 or visit www.hosannalititz.org. VENDORS SOUGHT

John (left) and Sandy Halvorsen displayed the flag they carried when they visited St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township in July. The couple stopped for dinner at the church as John worked to complete his prayer walk across America. The Halvorsens left Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 31, 2018, and arrived in Manhattan on July 31.
John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s walk in a motorhome, stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. This walk, the most recent of several John has completed, was titled “Prayer Walk America - An Appeal to Heaven.” “This is … an appeal to people to start praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the church. “The response has been so positive.” See Prayer Walk pg 5
Elliott Is Third Recipient Of GOTR Ellen Award By Ann Mead Ash
Not long after Danielle Elliott received the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award from Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster at the Inn at Leola Village on May 29, she headed for the Pocono Mountains, where she works at a summer camp for children. In the fall, she will return to her job as a learning support teacher at Burrowes Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster. For Elliott, who just signed up to volunteer for her sixth season with GOTR, working with children fulfills an important purpose. “Emotional and behavioral (needs) are what I am drawn to,” said Elliott, who noted that she was abandoned by a parent as a child. “When I was little … my teachers were there for me,” she said. “That’s what drew me to teaching and working with See Ellen Award pg 4
