Lititz recROC coordinator Corey Pickel described the upcoming Boulder Bash indoor climbing competition as a combination of problem solving and an athletic event. “We get more than 40 problems up there (on the climbing wall) for the event,” explained Pickel. A problem is the configuration that helps a climber move from the floor to the top of climbing wall using specific hand and foot holds. “So, for example, on the wall here there’s a green one with two pieces of tape that shows where your hand placement should be for the beginning of the problem,” pointed out Pickel, who noted that climbers will need to work with a specific color to reach the top. “Each problem has a point system attached, but competitors don’t know what that is,” Pickel explained, adding that the number of attempts to complete the problem is tracked and points are added up to determine the winners. Event head setter Doc Beverly works with a team to create fresh problems. The competition, which will be held at the recROC, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., Suite 10, Lititz, on Saturday, Sept. 10, will feature advanced, intermediate, and beginner contests. Registration on the day of the event will open at 9 a.m. Pickel said that the competition usually begins at 9:30 a.m. and that each competitive group takes about an hour to complete its climbs. About 75 competitors took part in the 2021 event. “We have had a great turnout the last few years,” said Pickel, who noted that some climbers travel a distance to take part but that many competitors are local. Male and female winners are named in each category. Prizes for winners have included tension boards climbers can use to train at home and crash pads for outdoor climbing. “People tend to appreciate (equipment) more, and (those prizes) entice some of the stronger climbers to come participate,” said Pickel.

BY ANN MEAD ASH Lori Breece, manager with United Disabilities Services (UDS) service dogs, especially likes coming to work on Wednesdays because that is when Quincy, a UDS ambassador dog, spends the day with her. “(Quincy) is the best dog,” said Breece. “This morning, I dropped a paper towel, and he picked it up and gave it to me.” Quincy was trained to be a full-service dog, but health issues kept him from that role.

BY ANN MEAD ASH Asked what she would like audiences to feel after hearing her eponymous quartet, Robin Work replied, “I think I would like people to leave with a lighter heart and a smile on their faces having experienced an hour of good classic music with a message of hope.” Work will bring the Robin Work Quartet to the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, to perform an outdoor concert on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m. The band’s repertoire will include songs See Lititz Public Library pg 3 See recROC pg 2

According to Pickel, spectators are welcome for a nominal fee, which includes free coffee, longjohns, and door prizes, which are often gift cards donated by local businesses.Pickel, who was tapped to run the recROC in 2019, pointed out that this is the sixth year for the Boulder Bash competition, which had originally been held each April. When COVID-19 restrictions delayed the 2020 event, the competition was moved to September. Pickel has been pleased with the growth of the competition and the overall use of the recROC center in recent years. “COVID was a major curveball, but with our committed members and staff we got through it,” he said. “I feel really blessed that we have been able to grow,” he said, noting the location generally has more than 100 visitors on a regular weekday. To prepare for the competition, teardown and cleaning of the wall and holds will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 6. From that point, the wall will be shut down until the competition. Pickel explained that this is to make sure that all competitors have the same amount of time to work theReadersproblems.who are interested in taking part in the Boulder Bash may visit

After 10 seasons of coaching Girls on the Run (GOTR) and Heart and Sole programs with LancasterLebanon GOTR, Gayle Boltz, winner of the 2022 Shining Light Award, knows exactly what is most rewarding about volunteering, but she cannot talk about it without becoming emotional. “It’s when you see the girls just come to life (as a team),” explained Boltz, who said the transformation usually happens midseason after the girls complete their first practice 5K. “That’s what I call the magic … when they feel that strength within them.”Boltz began coaching at Annville Elementary School in the spring of 2017. She was soon working to start a team at Lebanon Catholic - a kindergarten through 12th-grade private school from the Great American Songbook, along with the music of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, and more.Work grew up in in Manheim Township in a music-loving family that encouraged her love of singing. She began piano lessons at age 5 and took part in musical groups and shows in school. While she was working at a local hotel, members of a band asked her to join them on stage. The event led to her involvement with the Bobby Marshall Road Show based in Reading. Work traveled with show and dance bands, performing in Florida, Iowa, and Quebec. She also loved acting, performing at the Rainbow Dinner Theatre and with Jeff Raught and Friends.TheRobin Work Quartet was born when Work was offered a lastminute gig in the northeastern part of the county. “All the guys I normally call were busy,” recalled Work, who reached out to a musician in that area for help. He suggested Tony Miceli, an internationally renowned jazz vibraphonist. “I had never worked with a vibraphonist before,” said Work, who referred to Miceli as a down-to-earth musician who plays and teaches in Ireland, Germany, South Korea, and Italy. He is co-creator of the World Vibes Congress, which brings public awareness to the vibraphone. The quartet also includes Jeff Stabley, known for directing the York College Jazz Ensemble and Groove Ensemble. Stabley drums with a number of bands and plays keyboard with a hip-hop jazz group. He has been artistic director for “Jazz in the City” in York for eight years, and he has been inducted into the York City Hall of Fame. Like Work, bass player Steve Meashey comes from a musical family. Meashey has been an avid recording artist, and he is featured on a compact disc by drummer Joe Hunt’s trio. Meashey is currently bassist for the Harrisburg Jazz Collective. Work refers to her collaborators as “the phenomenal musicians I am blessed to work with.” Known for her crowd-pleasing, deep, rich voice, Work likes to include songs that attendees might not recognize along with musical favorites, such as “Just in Time” and “World on a String.” One of the songs she includes that is less well known is “Here’s to Life.” “I always look to tell a little story about the songs,” said Work, who noted the background of “Here’s to Life” offers a story especially pertinent for those who are middle aged or older.

trainers Janna Barley and Lorrie Snyder work together to match dogs with clients and help the canines learn the specific skills for thatInrole.addition to full-service dogs, UDS trains companion dogs that work with clients at home. Breece explained that these dogs do not wear a vest or have the same public access rights as service dogs, but they make significant contributions to an individual’s independence. Barley pointed out that Oliver is a service dog that was placed in the home of a woman with mobility issues. “Oliver can open a sliding glass door for her and close it again, and he can fetch anything she has dropped,” she explained.Theneed for facility dogs has “exploded” since 2016, according to Breece. Secondary trainer Susan Vollmar works with puppy trainer and breeder Kristy Conrad to place facility dogs, mostly in schools. “For our last fiscal year, we added 18 schools to our waiting list,” said Breece. “(Facility dogs) have a lot of the same training (as service dogs),” she said. Vollmar noted that dogs work with handlers from the facility, who receive training at UDS and at the school. She noted that dogs can mediate a student crisis, often helping to de-escalate a student who might otherwise have to be sent home. Facility dogs also serve as nonjudgmental “read” dogs, helping students who struggle with reading to practice and gain confidence. Breece explained that UDS trains Labradors because the dogs learn quickly and will change allegiance easily. The organization is always seeking funding for the care and training of puppies. “We are bringing in 14 to 18 new puppies each year, and our current waiting list for facility dogs working in Lancaster and York counties has reached 20 as well as our having a healthy waiting list for mobility service dogs,” she explained, noting that puppies may be sponsored by businesses, employees of businesses, churches, or other groups. Her success inspired her to start a Heart and Sole program at Lebanon Catholic for middleschoolers in the spring of 2018. When a team could not be raised, Boltz coached at Lebanon Middle School, where she connected with Laurie Funk, now a board member with GOTR Lancaster and Lebanon. In the fall of 2018, Boltz returned to GOTR at Lebanon Catholic, where she continued to coach until the spring of 2019, when she decided to transport girls who were interested in taking part in Heart and Sole to the Lebanon YMCA. “That’s when Laurie and I realized the power of connecting girls from different schools,” said Boltz. In the spring of 2020, a community team was born. Then, the COVID-19 shutdown occurred. Coaches reached out with activity packages to girls who had signed up from all over Lebanon County. Boltz noted that the YMCA has supported the program, but a lack of coaches has caused the GOTR program to struggleBoltzrecently.was nominated by fellow coaches who mentioned her positive attitude and vision as well as her ability to connect with each girl and celebrate her individual achievements. When 2021 Shining Light winner Cara Scudner announced Boltz as the award winner at the May 25 banquet, she said, “(Boltz’s) infectious enthusiasm, strength, and leadership skills brought girls from different schools together into one team with a strongEachbond.”Shining Light Award winner receives a bracelet and $500 to donate. Boltz chose to give to the Tour de Lebanon Valley bike ride, which raises funds for the Community Health Council of Lebanon County; the Lebanon Valley Conservancy; the Lebanon Valley Bicycle Coalition; the Lebanon Valley Mountain Bike Team, which is an interscholastic cycling team for young students; and the Lebanon Bicycle Recycle, which provides bikes for children in Lebanon.
