Knowledge is empowering and emboldening. Information can open minds and lead to understanding that produces empathy and curiosity.
Some people who come to know reptiles come to love them. Those people have given reptiles a chance.
“Imagine if someone told you there’s this magical, mysterious world that’s existed all of your life,” said Jesse Rothacker, a 2000 graduate of Warwick High School, a herpetologist and the president of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary.
“That’s the reptile world, and it does exist. It’s a very complex world. Maybe if you hear that, you think, ‘I wonder if I can learn a little bit about it and see what all the excitement is about.’ That’s when you fall in love with these animals.”
Rothacker operates Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary from his home in Rapho Township. The organization includes a rescue/adoption program and provides the foundation for Rothacker’s engaging, entertaining and educational reptile shows.

Nonprofits conduct fundraisers to finance their own altruistic endeavors. The events are key components of the organizations’ financial systems.
But there aren’t too many nonprofits staging fundraisers with the express intent of funding other nonprofits.
“Service Above Self” is more than the Rotary Club of Lititz’s motto. The local nonprofit exemplifies it and lives it, perhaps most notably through its upcoming event.

If children are our future and we focus on their futures, what’s created is an environment where everyone prospers.
That simple equation sort of sums up the North Museum of Nature and Science’s new kids’ program. It’s the kind of forward thinking that has made the North Museum a cornerstone in our local education community.
“You see that spark of curiosity come out,” said Kate Wilson, the North Museum’s senior manager of visitors’ services. “I just enjoy seeing (kids) come alive with wonder and get excited about the world around them. I love seeing kids learn but having fun with it. We don’t want them to worry that they don’t know things. Science changes. Seeing a kid make a mistake or having a happy accident is an opportunity to teach. That’s what science is.”
Located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster, the North Museum of Nature and Science has a new venture into the world of education called Nurture at North. The drop-off program is STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based and geared toward budding learners between the ages of 3 and 6.
Following a trial run this winter, Nurture at North was launched in the early days of June. The second session of the program, which offers half-day and full-day rates, will conclude on Friday, Aug. 29, and a decision on whether or not to continue it beyond the start of the school year has yet to be made.

not true,” said Rothacker. “Everyone thinks every snake is a copperhead. Once you understand that they’re not, you can learn new things about reptiles. If you can get past the fear, then you can unlock the fascination.”
Rothacker stages more than 300 45-minute reptile shows each year, both public showings and private performances. He teaches audiences about his forgotten friends at community events, churches, schools, libraries, festivals, corporate events, camps and birthday parties, all over Lancaster County and surrounding counties, most recently at venues in Manheim Township, Leola, Lititz, Adamstown, New Holland, Bowmansville, Lebanon and Myerstown.
“Owners pass away. We definitely do adoptions, but we’ll also help network. We can’t say yes to all requests, but we can connect those trying to find reptiles new homes and those who are willing to adopt. Adoption used to be most of what we did, and we still do it, but the education side has taken on a bigger role.”
There are more than 11,000 species of reptiles in the world. Reptiles are broken down into four major categories: snakes and lizards; turtles and tortoises; crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gharials; and tuataras.

“I’m a little bit of a performer. Some people call me a reptile comedian,” said Rothacker. “We want people to have fun. Folks have a chance to pet a reptile or touch a snake. You’re going to get a chance to meet the friendliest reptiles you’ve ever seen. I’m playing with the audience. I’m joking with them. If you’re thinking you’re going to sit still, we’re probably not going to allow that. We want to pull the audience’s energy into the room.”
“Biologically, (humans are) warm-blooded, and reptiles are cold-blooded,” said Rothacker. “We have live births, and most of them lay eggs. We all need places to live, and we all need the right foods to be healthy. We think of snakes as being solitary, but they live on top of each other, and that’s typical. Understanding some of those relationships is fun to explore.”
Rothacker started Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary in Lititz before moving the operation to Rapho Township in 2004. But Rothacker’s love of reptiles can be traced to a curious childhood.

Of the nearly 100 reptiles currently residing at Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, about half of them are available for adoption. There are requirements and an application process involved with adopting reptiles, but the facility is not open to visits from the public.
“If I know there are reptiles out there who people want to give up, I’ll rescue them,” said Rothacker.

“You could say that the reptiles picked me,” said Rothacker. “Ever since I was a little kid, I was drawn to them. I have memories of catching turtles and petting snakes as a teenager. When I got into the reptile world, I realized there are a lot of people who are in it for the short term. Once I had one pet snake, I realized it was so much fun that I wanted more of them.”

When Lisa Palmquist joined Pilot International almost 20 years ago, she soon had a big goal in mind.
“My desire to be president of the organization began early in my Pilot career,” she shared. “I had such respect and admiration for the presidents that I said to myself, ‘I’m going to be her one day,’ whenever one of the presidents was addressing the membership at the annual convention.”
That dream will become a reality for Lisa when she begins a one-year term as president of Pilot International in July of 2026. She will be installed as president-elect of the organization in Charlotte, N.C., on Saturday, July 26.
Pilot International is an international organization founded in 1921 in Macon, Ga., to promote brain health and wellness and support caregivers. Lisa, who lives in Landisville, is a member of the local club, Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, which meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Columbia Fire Department.
She joined the Pilot Club of Lancaster in 2008 and then left in 2015 to charter the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania with 21 members.
“We just celebrated our 10th anniversary with 29 members,” she remarked.
As president of Pilot International, Lisa will serve as chief executive director.
“Responsibilities as president of Pilot International will be to preside at business sessions, report on the work and state of the organization at the annual international convention and during the year as needed, appoint special committees and fill vacancies of the paid staff and volunteer positions that arise during the year, to name a few,” she said.
Prior to rising to the role of president, Lisa has dedicated extensive time and talent to the organization on the national and international levels.
“I have served on the International Executive Committee for two years
as a director, a year as secretary and this past year as vice president,” she remarked, noting that she was elected president-elect and will automatically assume the role of president in 2026 in Oklahoma City.
“While serving on the International Executive Committee, I have served the districts as a representative of the executive committee for Florida, Michigan-Indiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, Heartland and Kentucky-Ohio-West Virginia. As president-elect, I will serve the Bahamas and another district, and as president, I will serve Japan and Hawaii.”
Lisa noted that her goal of heading the organization stemmed from the impact the nonprofit makes as well as the people she’s connected with through her service work.
“I have met some of the kindest, most service-oriented women from all over the world that I call my closest friends,” she said. “The most important reason for wanting to be president of Pilot International is believing in the mission of Pilot International - to influence positive change in communities throughout the world, by coming together in friendship and service, focusing on encouraging brain safety and health and supporting those who care for others.”
Locally, the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania organizes a variety of community initiatives, including providing more than 300 free helmets to children of Lancaster County just in the past year, 950 new children’s books to newborns discharged from the UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, and 120 Coping Kits to the UPMC Lititz emergency room for children undergoing the traumatic experience of an emergency.
“These are just a few of the projects that the club shares to serve our community,” Lisa said. “We support the Hershey Mill Home with monthly activities and the Alzheimer’s
Walk. … Project Linus receives no-sew blankets from us. Pick-me-up gifts are given to many individuals and groups. For example, an extra-large basket of goodies was presented to the West York Police Department and staff to show community care and support after the loss of one of their colleagues during a shooting.”
When she’s not serving through Pilot International, Lisa dedicates time to Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster and Salem Church in Manheim.
“I love spending time on my deck with my pool and flowers, and I love to travel,” she said. She and her husband, Scott, also enjoy spending time with their family, which includes four granddaughters, one grandson and two dogs.
Lisa encourages anyone with a heart for service to consider joining the Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania.
at 717-951-1432 or lpalm quist948@gmail.com.
“We are always looking for new members of all ages,” she said. “If you enjoy serving others and having fun, then Pilot is for you! Our club is diverse and very welcoming with the belief that you do what you can do. We have young mothers and older members.”

Tom Oehme, who’s been the Rotary Club of Lititz’s craft show chairman for 30 years. “After all of our expenses are paid, the money goes back into the community. Our goal is to serve our community.”
This year’s edition of the Rotary Club of Lititz’s annual craft show will take place on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. over 12 blocks of closed streets in Lititz’s downtown business district. The rain-or-shine event, which is free to

attend, is one of the largest one-day craft shows in Pennsylvania.
“We attract a lot of shoppers to the event,” said Oehme. “We have a large variety of crafts that draw people in. We sort of tie up the whole town. It’s a good day for the downtown merchants, especially the restaurants.”
Up to 450 crafters are expected to peddle their wares at the craft show, everything from handmade jewelry and dolls to soaps and bath oils,
from hats and artisan home goods to antiques and yard ornaments, from dried flowers and unique art to clothing and signs. Half of the vendors originate from surrounding communities and elsewhere in Lancaster County, while the other half come from outside the county, including as far away as Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and New York.
The vendors will set up their display tables and tents in 10-foot spaces on East Main Street from Broad Street to Oak Street and along Broad Street from Orange Street to Front Street. Vendors are encouraged to demonstrate their wares and interact with visitors.

“Some of the vendors have stores and make a living out of it,” said Oehme. “Some do it as a hobby. They’re pretty darn creative. They make things you’d never expect.”
In addition to the local downtown restaurants, some local nonprofits
will be on hand selling refreshments.
“It’s a busy day,” said Oehme. “There’s sort of a festival-type feel to it. There’s a lot of activity. You see people carrying all kinds of stuff as they’re leaving the show. I would just encourage people to come out and enjoy it.”
As many as 40,000 people are expected to attend the Rotary Club of Lititz’s craft show. Organizers are hoping to realize $60,000 from the event, and proceeds will be distributed to as many as 30 local nonprofits and civic organizations, including fire companies and first responders, educational causes and Lititz Meals on Wheels.
“It’s an important fundraiser because it’s our only one,” said Oehme.
It takes about 15 volunteers, most of whom are associated with the Rotary Club of Lititz, to stage the craft show.
gives kids a foundation for skills they’re going to use the rest of their lives,” said Scott Downs, the North Museum’s director of development and strategic partnerships. “What could be a better classroom than a museum? STEM education is critically important to kids whether they pursue science later in life or not. It teaches them problem-solving and communication skills. I think there’s a lot of value there. It also promotes equity and inclusion.”
work in the world. Students are taught to identify birds and other wildlife; they learn about astronomy in the planetarium; they learn about the weather; and they are treated to free play, circle time, experiments and readings.
Downs noted that another purpose of Nurture at North is to provide a child care option for families.
“We’re always trying to address the needs of the community,” he said. “We thought this might be a good opportunity for us to step up and fill a void.”
“On the morning of the show, we have people who will help the vendors find their spaces and get unloaded,” said Oehme. “After about 8 a.m., there’s not much for us to do except sit back and watch the people.”
The craft show has been a downtown Lititz tradition since 1979. The early shows included only local vendors.
“It’s grown tremendously,” said Oehme. “When it first started, it was held on the first block of Main Street. It was held on the sidewalk, and there was still traffic in the streets. I got involved with it in its second year, and I grew along with the show.”
Next year, the Rotary Club of Lititz will mark its 100th anniversary as a group. Currently, the organization counts 30 individuals among its membership and meets once a week, on Tuesdays at 6 p.m. at Lititz Springs Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz. For additional information, go to www .lititzrotary.com.
At this point in their development, 3- to 6-yearolds are just learning how to learn. About 14 kids are currently enrolled in the Nurture at North program.
“Developmentally, they’re still learning their basic skills,” said Wilson. “At this age, kids soak things up like a sponge, and they’re able to report what they’re learning. This is the perfect age to teach science, math and reading, and they’re learning to be functioning humans. They’re still learning basic facts.”
“(Kids are) little explorers, and we’re trying to foster that inquisitiveness,” said Downs. “We know how important fundamental things are in a child’s development.”
Through weekly themes, real-life experiences and hands-on learning, Nurture at North teaches social and interpersonal skills, fun science facts and how things

In addition, the museum hosts dozens of school field trips each year and sends volunteers to schools through its STEM career fair program.
“So many people think of the North Museum as a museum,” said Downs. “But beyond that, we are a large education provider for this community, and not just for children. We are making a difference in so many young people’s lives. It’s a really fascinating gem. This place is just so amazing.” For additional information, go to www.north museum.org.

The community picnic hosted by Jerusalem Church is some old-fashioned fun - literally. The church has been holding the event since the 1800s.
This year’s picnic will take place on Saturday, Aug. 2, at the Penryn Church Grove on Picnic Grove Road in Penryn.
“We encourage people to come check us out for a little step back in time,” said Chad Eberly, picnic coordinator. “The picnic hasn’t changed much in the over 150 or so years we have held it. The food is all homemade, a cheap meal to feed your family and in a unique outdoor setting. There is a kids’ stand where small toys may be purchased; a playground for the kids to use; and plenty of space to sit and enjoy a nice evening of live music, food and fellowship.”
Prior to the picnic, which will begin at 4 p.m., people may pick up homemade chicken corn soup, available for takeout beginning at 8 a.m. until sold out. Attendees should bring their own quart containers.
“The picnic goes from approximately 4 to 8 p.m. for a sit-down meal,” Eberly said. “Just find a seat and look for someone in a blue Jerusalem shirt to wait on you.”
The menu will include
chicken corn soup, hamburgers, hot dogs, cakes, pies, ice cream and drinks.
“This year, we will also allow to-go purchases of soup during the picnic,” Eberly noted.
Picnicgoers are encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs and sit under the trees in the grove to enjoy live music, which will begin at 4:30 p.m.
“One of our church members is a part of Lancaster Marimba Ensemble,” Eberly stated. “They will open the music and will play for the first hour. After that, we have the Moonlighters of Lititz.”
The group performs big band music from the 1930s and beyond.
“Between these two bands’ (performances), we will hold an old-fashioned cake walk,” Eberly noted. “If you don’t know what that is, it is when people march around the bandstand and when the music stops, they stop. The person in the secret spot gets a baked good. Think musical chairs, but with cake.”
The picnic is a favorite event among church members, who enjoy the opportunity to reach out to the community, Eberly remarked.
“We get to talk with local people. We get to show them who we are and share a little piece of history,” he said. “I think it has lasted so long because it has been

something that our multigenerational congregation can do together. Many have grown up being a part of the church picnic and have fond memories of the event. It’s important to us to continue the event.”
He added that pastor Jonathan Shirk and several of the church elders will be in attendance at the picnic.
“If anyone would like to know more about our church, its ministry or hear the good news of Jesus Christ, we encourage them to ask questions,” Eberly said.
All profits from the sale of food go toward updating and renovating the picnic grove area, which is available for rent to the public.
