Not sure exactly what it is, but people are naturally drawn to water. Maybe it’s the fact that up to 60% of the human body is made up of water.
Rivers, lakes, streams, oceans, even pools. For more than 60 years, people have been drawn to the Lititz Springs Pool.
“We want to offer a wonderful experience for members of our community,” said Corey Pickel, associate executive director of Lititz recCenter, which operates Lititz Springs Pool.
“We really want to create an outdoor oasis on hot summer days. It can be enjoyable and relaxing to hang out in the water. It’s really a community gem. ... It has lots of space, and it’s a place for families and the community to come to.”
Situated on land owned by Lititz Borough at 201 Maple St., Lititz Springs Pool is actually an outdoor water facility made up of three pools - a 400,000-gallon main pool, a 70,000-gallon adult lap pool and a 4,000-gallon baby pool. The Lititz Springs Pool experience is enhanced by a waterpark playground, a slide, a 50-gallon dump bucket, 24 huge shade-producing umbrellas and grassy areas.
The facility is also home to swim lessons, aquatics fitness classes and the Lititz Springs Wave Runners’ community swim team designed for competitors ages 5 to 18. There are also party pavilions available for rent there.
The Lititz Springs Pool is open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. - weather permitting - from early June to late August.

The Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show has a long and storied history as an event in downtown Lititz.
The next edition of the event might be the last one conducted at Lititz Springs Park. The Lititz Art Association (LAA), which sponsors the show, is hoping beyond hope that it won’t be the final Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show ever.
“The park (officials have) decided that large events like ours are too hard on the ecosystem of the park, and they want to limit that,” said Beth Kaylor Brunner, who’s been the president of the LAA for 10 years. “We want to keep it in Lititz because it’s so good for Lititz. But because it’s

“In this day and age, everyone is locked into their screens,” said Pickel, a resident of Lititz. “We have people moving less. We need to find different outlets and activities that are fun. This is something that’s enjoyable. Just being outside, this is something that’s a great way to be healthy and active. As far as a low-impact activity goes, swimming is wonderful.”
The Lititz Springs Pool hosts an average of 24,000 visitors a month, a combination of members and daily guests from Lititz, Warwick Township, Elizabeth Township and surrounding areas. Some 1,000 members belong to the Lititz Springs Pool.
beach, but it’s right here in your hometown.”
Lititz Springs Pool employs a staff of nearly 60 workers - lifeguards, pool attendants and pool managers.
“For me personally, I grew up there, going there daily with my siblings,” said Pickel. “When I was a kid, it was the place to go.”
Lititz Springs Pool was designed in 1961, and its local popularity has stood the test of time.
“Community pools in general are hard to maintain,” said Pickel. “What we were able to do is enhance the grounds of the facility.”

“People are coming to the pool to have a nice, relaxing day and to unplug,” said Pickel. “That’s the kind of atmosphere we’re trying to create. We want people to make a day of it. It looks beautiful. It’s fun for all ages, and it’s a place where people can feel safe.”
“One of the things we do see a lot of is young families who want to do something fun outside,” continued Pickel. “There’s a community element to it. There are people who are there regularly throughout the week. It’s the next best thing to being at the
Much of Lititz Springs Pool’s enhancement resulted from a $4.5 million renovation project completed in 2019. In addition to providing an updated facelift for all three pools, the project represented local leaders’ commitment to the pool and the role that it plays in the community.
“We’re here, and we have this to offer you,” said Pickel. “It’s also a testament to the Lititz community. Lititz has a wonderful community, and it has people who made decisions to help the pool.”

RTCM, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary, purchased a building in Ronks for $1.35 million on June 20 and moved there from its home in East Lampeter Township it had been leasing since 2015.
RTCM accepted a loan for $1.25 million from local businesspeople John and Joyce Wagner, who agreed to terms beneficial to the organization. There is no interest for the first year and 5% interest for the second and third years of the loan. “The faster we can pay knock off the principal in the first year,
The bigger building will enable RTCM to assist more people. The East Lampeter group home accommodated 12 clients and up to six staff members. The Ronks residence holds up to 20 clients.
“It’s surrounded by farmland and woods,” said Jaime’s wife, Pam, who is RTCM’s office manager, bookkeeper, and events director. “There are donkeys and goats.”
“It’s very therapeutic,” Jaime added.
Men in the program pay a monthly rate determined by RTCM’s board of directors. The cost includes an evening meal, internet, electric, and trash disposal. RTCM provides therapy, vocational training, and life-skills training such as having a bank account. Scholarships are available for qualifying clients.

“The ReStore is a treasure hunt,” said Ben Mathus, who’s been the ReStore’s director for eight years. “Our savvy shoppers know our truck schedule. They want to see what new products are going to hit our floor. The savvy shoppers are in here regularly searching for gems. There are tremendous savings here.”
It’s been a year since Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat for Humanity relocated its ReStore retail operations from a 20,000-square-foot building at 155 Independence Court, Lancaster, to a 33,000-square-foot site at 1061 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. That anniversary was marked with a celebration on June 21.
“We had a great vibe going on that day,” said Mathus. “We had a line outside the front door. When we opened the doors, people rushed in. It was kind of a party atmosphere. We generated a lot of income for the house-building program.”
“We were at our old location for 25 years, and we just outgrew it,” Mathus added. “It was time for something newer, larger, something to support our growing mission. It’s a larger, brighter building, and it’s a better customer experience all the way around.”
A large portion of the ReStore’s inventory is made up of building supplies, household goods, home décor and do-it-yourself
materials donated by companies, private estates and individuals. The ReStore sells new and used furniture, hardware, plumbing supplies, bathtubs, roof shingles, latex gloves, doors and windows, used appliances, filters, wall art and light fixtures.
In a typical year, the ReStore sells enough of those donated items to fund two housing projects for Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat for Humanity, which renovates or builds safe, affordable homes for local low-income families.
“The ReStore is one of the fundraising arms of Habitat for Humanity,” said Mathus. “We are all about reduce, reuse and recycle and keeping materials out of landfills. We’re prioritizing materials. We are a retail outlet. Our mission is clear; we support our affiliate program.”
On the average, between 200 and 300 shoppers frequent the ReStore each day. The ReStore is open Tuesdays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“My favorite part is seeing what comes in through our donation doors, seeing what kind of interesting items come in,” said Mathus. “We don’t have an inventory. We don’t get manifests of what’s coming in. It’s always different. It’s always unexpected.”
The ReStore employs 15 staff members. But the
ReStore “really couldn’t do what we do” without the work of nearly 40 regular volunteers, Mathus emphasized.
“Everyone deserves a safe, dry, affordable house,” said Mathus. “Everyone needs a place to live. If it’s not safe, dry and affordable, it’s not a house; it’s not a home. Having a roof over your head affords so many opportunities. Housing is critical. We see it with kids’ grades. That stuff trickles down, and it affects the whole family. We want everyone to thrive and survive.”
Habitat for Humanity, an international organization, launched an arm in Lancaster in 1986. In 2015, the local branch expanded to include residents in Lebanon County.
Originally started in a location at 1520 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, the ReStore has been financially supporting the Lancaster-Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s mission

for 32 years.
“We’ve helped hundreds of people over that time, locally, in our region,” said Mathus. “We build new houses and remodel older homes. By preserving existing structures, we’re saving the soul of the city.”

“We’ll have to see what the final say is with the people we are talking with,” continued Kaylor Brunner.
Floyd Hackman, the president of the Village Art
Association, established what would evolve into the Lititz Fine Art Show in the late 1960s as a way to bring the local community together through art. The event grew into one of the largest of its kind on the East Coast after moving to Lititz Springs Park in 1982.
“We are hoping to find a new venue,” said Kaylor Brunner. “We have feelers out. We have some options and we’re hoping they pan out so we can continue the show. It’s a lot of work, but it allows (LAA) to do a lot of things.”

This year’s edition of the Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show, the 58th, will be staged on Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The rain-or-shine event is free to visitors, and several concessions stands for refreshments will be available.
Kaylor Brunner said she has enjoyed the park as a setting for the show. “It’s a beautiful setting, a wonderful outdoor venue, and the show is about sharing with the artists,” she said. “It’s a celebration of the arts. People are just having a good time. Some people are just looking; some are serious buyers.”
About 140 artistsnearly 30 LAA members; other local creative individuals; and people from surrounding communities, Lancaster County and as far away as New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Virginia and Florida - will be showing the labors of their love and offering them for sale. Prizes will be awarded in the categories of ceramics, mixed media, oils and acrylics,
“I think we have very good artists. They’re juried before they get into the show,” said Kaylor Brunner. “A lot of them are professional artists who make their livings doing this. They go from show to show. We also have people who do it as a side hustle to their fulltime jobs.”
More than 3,000 visitors, spectators and art lovers are expected to attend the show. The Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show is LAA’s largest fundraising event.
“(The proceeds) will be used for our programs and for buying equipment,” said Kaylor Brunner. “We also use the money for events. It goes back to the community for a lot of different things.”
“It’s grown into something very unique,” she added. “We have artists who have been with us for a long time. They love the show. They love the venue. And the merchants downtown love the show.
The fine art show is one of four events that LAA conducts annually, along with the smaller Lititz Parkwalk, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4, at Lititz Springs Park; the Holiday Gift Show, which will be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 15; and the members-only Square Foot Show, conducted at the Lititz Shirt Factory every spring.
“(The Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show is) a great show to come to and see art,” said Kaylor Brunner. “It’s basically artists teaching people what they do and how they do it. Our mission at the Lititz Art Association is to foster the arts, and that is what this show is about. Communities that have a vibrant art association usually prosper, and it’s usually good for the area.”
