More Than Wrestling hen Logan Bomgardner was younger, he was a tad rambunctious. “I was full of energy,” said Logan, who is now 11 and a student at Lititz Elementary School. Fortunately for Logan, his father, Andrew, was coaching Manheim Central Middle School wrestling at the time. When Logan was 8, Andrew started taking him to the Manheim Mat Club, eventually moving him to Lancaster Alliance Wrestling (LAW), a nonprofit organization also based in Manheim that is dedicated to fostering, promoting and encouraging the sport of amateur wrestling. This year, Logan placed third at the state PAUSAW (Pennsylvania USA Wrestling) freestyle tournament held at Alvernia University in Reading in June. He was the only student in Warwick School District to qualify for the event. Logan was scheduled to wrestle in three matches in the boys 12 and under category. When he lost his first match, he moved into the consolation bracket. Before his second match, Logan admitted he felt a little down, but he was up for the challenge. “My fear turned into strength, and I

The organization takes students around the U.S. and to locations in Canada, Puerto Rico, and beyond. “We provide the opportunity for kids to wrestle at a higher level,” said Betancourt. “One of the things (I like) about LAW is that it’s not just about wrestling; it’s about the individual,” said Andrew. “They are making them into nice young men and women.” Part of LAW’s mission is to build character, sportsmanship, self-confidence, self-esteem, and positive attitudes toward dedication, persistence, and hard work. Betancourt has been impressed with Logan’s outlook. “This kid always has a smile,” said Betancourt. “He is genuinely excited to be in the sport, and those are the kinds of athletes I love being around.” Readers who would like to know more about LAW may search for “Lancaster Alliance Wrestling” on Facebook.

In the late 1960s, when Lois Zigrang and her husband, Walt, first learned of a missionary opportunity with Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in Angola, Lois thought, “Who me?” She pictured primitive living conditions. “I had never even camped,” she recalled. God’s plans for the couple and their young son did include Angola and later Mozambique, where they were forced to leave so their homes could be overtaken. “Who, Me?” is the title of a book by Lois that

pinned a kid in 21 seconds,” said Logan, whose score pushed him into fourth place. “For the consolation final match, the other boy had to forfeit, which put (Logan) in third place,” explained Andrew, who noted that through LAW, Logan has had many opportunities to wrestle in tournaments, including a competition on June 19, in Cherokee, N.C., where the youngster wrestled for a team from Long Island, N.Y. called Prestige Worldwide. Logan’s record for that event was 2-2, and he bested a Georgia State silver medalist. When Logan was still wrestling at the Manheim Mat Club, he suffered an epileptic seizure. “I was embarrassed,” recalled Logan, whose seizures are now generally controlled by medication. “(But) I got over being embarrassed by just going back to wrestling.” About two years ago, Logan began wrestling freestyle and Greco-Roman style with LAW, and he now wrestles there up to six visits per week. “We do a lot of gymnastics and dynamic flexibility exercise and a ton of wrestling,” shared Will Betancourt, executive director of LAW. Betancourt said that LAW opened in Manheim in 2009 and has a membership of 300 students from novice through Olympians. About 40

In celebration of the organization’s anniversary, a gala and art auction will be held on Friday, Sept. 30, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. Tickets, which will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 1, at www.longspark.org, will be limited. Board member Janice Henry is chairing the event. A segment of the event will be
devoted to a presentation by wellknown local architect Gregory Scott, whose firm originally designed the amphitheater. Scott will look back on the history of the iconic building, which began when the Sertoma Club put together a leadership team in 1959 and then built and commissioned the amphitheater before turning it over to the city. The live auction of original art,
which will benefit the foundation, will showcase members of the Echo Valley Art Group. A highlight of that portion of the event will be the sale of a commissioned piece created by artist Lisa Madenspacher. Her rendition of the amphitheater pays homage to the concerts and fireworks with which the building is associated. Another auction item will poke fun at the amphitheater’s

long association with wild birds. “We have a bird feeder that was created as a fundraiser,” said Ellis, who noted that the roof of the feeder has the same profile as the amphitheater. “We are calling it an amphi-feeder.” The feeder was fabricated and painted by Viocity Group and donated by Woodstream Corporation. Food for the gala will be created by former White House chef John Moeller, known for owning and preparing cuisine at the Greenfield Restaurant and Bar.

Encouraged to look at Columbia Bible College, Columbia, S.C., the pair took a risk by attending the college while trying to sell their Gainesville home. “We were (at Bible college) two years. Our house didn’t sell, but we managed,” said Lois. When they finished school and joined AEF, they sold their house for cash, which they needed to begin their mission. The Zigrangs were sent to Catota, Angola, where they taught Bible classes and Walt worked in agriculture. In 1975, a communist uprising caused

Lois gave birth to their son the following November, and Walt took his first job as an assistant grove production manager. “That’s when the Lord got a hold of us,” recalled Lois. She and Walt were attending a Christian Missionary Alliance Church near their home in Gainesville. “I was like a sponge,” said Lois, who had accepted Christ at age 15. “I had been waiting to learn the Word of God.” Walt, however, was miserable, not understanding Lois’ need to learn. Lois began praying about Walt’s relationship with the Lord. One day, the church pastor visited and talked to Walt. While Lois prayed in another room, Walt and the

Zigrang from pg 3 the family to flee. “It was getting too dangerous,” recalled Lois. When the United States offered refugee air flights, the family returned to Columbia, but back in Angola, the people they had taught were hoping the couple would return. “They kept ... asking us to come back,” said Lois. The Zigrangs applied to teach Bible classes and were shocked when they were quickly approved. The family remained in the war zone for 13 years before returning to the U.S. to work with AEF, which eventually became part of SIM, a missionary organization with representatives in a number of countries. In 1998, when SIM needed a field leader for Mozambique, the Zigrangs were asked to take the position because they knew Portuguese. The pair was there until the early 2000s, when they returned to the States permanently, eventually settling in Lancaster to be near their son and his children. Lois knew she had to share their story with others. “God kept pushing me to write the book,” she said. “The last two years, I knew if I didn’t get done it wasn’t going to get done.” “Who, Me?” is available at www.amazon.com. Lois is interested in sharing her story live. She can be reached at zigscfh@verizon.net.
