hen Ansh Dwivedi says he wants to change the world, he means both figuratively and literally, both physically and theoretically.
Now, you can doubt him if you like. But do so at your own peril.
“I love learning why things work or how things work, and then replicating them,” said Dwivedi. “I’m always asking myself how things work. It goes back to problem-solving. I love math. I want to change the world in the ways I’m interested in. That general discovery of how the world works is why I love science so much.”
Four months ago, Dwivedi, a recent graduate of Warwick High School, expertly applied his knowledge, problem-solving skills and curiosity to take the top prize at a
prestigious local science and engineering competition. On March 13 at Millersville University, Dwivedi was crowned the grand champion at the annual North Museum Science and Engineering Fair (NMSEF).
Dwivedi’s project “HEA You, Stop That Radiation - Polyimide-Taped High Entropy Alloys (HEAs) vs. Ionizing Radiation Shielding” also earned him a trip to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Columbus, Ohio, from May 10 to 16. There, his entry in the chemistry, energy and materials science category was one of 1,657 entries from students from 63 countries.
“The entire experience for this project was rewarding,” said Dwivedi. “I loved the problemsolving for this project. There were some minor problems. At the start, I

Dozens of talented musicians are playing 14 types of instruments with passion and expertise. But the key to their collective sound quality is cooperation, collaboration and coordination.
Members of the Ephrata Concert Band create beautiful music together.
“These (musicians) are people who enjoy playing their instruments,” said Jim Kimmel, the Ephrata Concert Band’s conductor.

“We hope kids want to come out and learn about first responders,” said Kim Herskowitz, Cadet Camp’s coordinator. “It gives them an opportunity to get a little taste of it. It’s an opportunity to try some things they wouldn’t be able to try every day. Maybe we can get these kids to consider it as a career path. It’s about connecting with them while they’re young and seeing if they have an interest. It’s just kind of letting them know what’s out there.”
The fifth edition of Lafayette Fire Company’s annual Cadet Camp will be conducted over two days, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. Cadet Camp is designed for kids ages 8 to 14 who reside in Lancaster County.
“We respond to so many different kinds of calls,” said Herskowitz. “It’s not like a single service anymore. We’re constantly being relied on by the community, and things have only gotten busier. All these first responders make such an impact in their communities. The public expects a lot of us, and we want to be ready.”
Cadet Camp teaches through a series of skills stations that participants rotate through - six on Friday night and 10 on Saturday. Each skills station is manned by multiple instructors, and this year campers will learn about hose lines, search techniques, campfire and home fire safety, equipment, cribbing and stabilization, communication and washing apparatus.
outfitted with his or her own personal protective equipment.
“We get a lot of kids who have someone in their families who are first responders,” said Herskowitz. “It’s for anyone who has a general interest. We try to make it so broad that it’s interesting to everyone. It’s for everyone interested in first responding.”
In addition to volunteer members of Lafayette Fire Company, officers from local police departments and medical personnel from local emergency service teams will be on hand to impart knowledge from their particular areas of expertise. It takes nearly 50 instructors to operate Cadet Camp.

The Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF) will present the second show in its 2025 Summer Concert Series in its Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind 145 E. Main St., Lititz, on Sunday, July 13, at 6:30 p.m.
Music will be provided by The A440s, a brass band founded at Millersville University. The band
will perform a fusion of pop, rock, jazz, funk, and world music.
Attendees should bring chairs and blankets. Free parking is available nearby, and refreshments will be available for a fee. The event is pay-whatyou-can, and donations will be accepted to help preserve LHF’s gardens and 18th-century structures.
“Some of the instruction is based more on the soft skills,” said Herskowitz. “They’re skills that can be applied to almost any job and skills that you can apply in school. They’re skills employers say they’re looking for. (Participants are) gaining skills that are going to benefit them. We want to build those out and be able to work as a team.
Lafayette Fire Company, which was formed in 1943, is made up and maintained by the work of 80 volunteers - firefighters, drivers, helpers, support staff and administrative personnel. In 2024, the fire company responded to 615 service calls of varying natures.
“It’s hard these days,” said Herskowitz. “Volunteerism is definitely on the decline. People are being pulled in different directions. It takes a dedicated individual with a certain mindset.”

Faith, fellowship and tasty food will be in the spotlight when Ruhl’s Church hosts its annual community picnic. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim.
“Why do we hold the annual community picnic, you may ask? Well, it is a tradition. But it is also for fellowship and enjoyment,” shared Gail Ruhl, picnic planning committee member. “We believe our picnic offers an informal place to see our congregation in action, working and laughing together side by side.”
As Gail explained, the picnic is a major undertaking for the church members.
“Preparations for the community picnic begin early in the week when members of our church gather together to ready the grove for visitors,” she said. “We make sure all is clean and in working order for the cooking to begin. Several days before the picnic, we cook and debone approximately 550 pounds of chicken. Starting very early on the day of the picnic, we begin mixing and cooking our traditional chicken corn soup
following a recipe that has been used for generations.”
While the soup is cooking, she noted, volunteers are busy in the kitchen slicing and cutting homemade desserts, dicing onions and peppers to top grilled sandwiches and preparing to dip ice cream. Takeout chicken corn soup, pies, cakes and other desserts will be available for purchase starting at 9 a.m.
“You may bring your own containers for soup, or you may buy it in prepackaged quart containers,” Gail remarked. “The lunch menu includes soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot sausage sandwiches, homemade desserts, ice cream and beverages.”
Along with homemade food, the picnic provides a way for church members to connect with the wider community.
“Our church picnic grove has a nice, warm, relaxing atmosphere. Add to that a variety of good food, friends and family, and you get a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors and each other,” Gail stated. “Children may play on the playground, and folks may choose to eat outside at picnic tables under the trees or inside the pavilion.”
Beyond the community picnic, Ruhl’s Church uses the site to hold

worship services in the summer.
“Grove services will be held every Sunday evening starting at 7 p.m.,” Gail said. “Every evening of grove service starts off with a hymn sing and includes inspiring Bible-based messages that feed the soul. After each service attendees may enjoy a dish of hand-dipped ice cream and conversation.”
Grove service speakers will be Seth Achey on July 13, the Rev. Rob Timlin on July 20, the Rev. Joe Dipalo on July 27, the Rev. Rick Rimert on Aug. 3, the Rev. Roger Kresge on Aug. 10 and Rob Timlin Jr. on Aug. 17.
Ruhl’s Church will also host vacation Bible school (VBS) again this summer at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim.
It will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 28, through Thursday, July 31. The theme is “Cave Quest: Following Jesus, the Light of the World.” Children age 4 through fourth grade are invited to attend, and reservations may be made by calling 717-824-5050.
For more information about the community picnic, grove services or VBS, call the church office at 717-665-3400 or visit https:// ruhlschurch.org.
“They enjoy making music. It’s very intergenerational. We have a musician who’s 13 years old and a person who’s in their 90s, and it’s all ages in between. My goal is to get people working together and learning from each other. I’m really proud of that generational focus. To me, that’s what a
community is, a group of people of all ages.”
The Ephrata Concert Band will perform during two upcoming shows at the band shell inside Thomas Grater Memorial Park, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. The first will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, and the second is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. In the case of inclement weather, the concerts will be conducted inside the Ephrata Rec Center, 130 S. Academy Drive, Ephrata.
Both performances are free to attend. The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will sell bottles of water during each show.
“It’s music that the musicians enjoy and music the audience enjoys,” said Kimmel, a resident of Ephrata. “Most people enjoy a summer night in the park. It’s relaxing and informal. Our goal is to provide a quality performance. I try to educate the audience and give them something fun and enjoyable to listen to.”
The Ephrata Concert Band performs musical numbers that are recognizable to individuals of all ages, along with patriotic tunes, traditional marches and medleys from Broadway musicals. The concerts generally last an hour.
“There’s definitely an
understanding and an appreciation of music,” said Kimmel. “Music adds meaning to life. By playing an instrument, there are so many functions going on, physically, mentally and emotionally. Staying involved with playing music is one of the best ways to maintain cognitive functions as people age. When you wrap that together with emotions, it’s a wonderful thing. It’s a way to keep people involved with life.”
The Ephrata Concert Band is made up of 45 local musicians playing flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, tubas, French horns, bassoons, bass clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophones, oboes and percussion.
Half of the band’s musicians are high school students or college students.
Half of the band members hail from Ephrata, and the remainder of the band’s members reside in surrounding communities, like Lititz, Denver and the city of Lancaster.
“It’s a community band,” said Kimmel. “A number of years ago, there were few high school and college students involved. When I took over as conductor, I recruited more younger musicians. It’s no longer an old folks’ band. In today’s society, very rarely do we

have people of all ages working together.”
Prior to each Sunday performance, the musicians come together as a band to rehearse that night’s music.
“You have to meet people where they’re at and take them where you want them to be,” said Kimmel. “You have to come into rehearsals with a clear understanding of what you want to attain. Music has so much room for interpretation. If a conductor is not prepared, then the musicians don’t have the ability to follow.”
The Ephrata Concert band was founded in 1975 by John Enck, an Ephrata resident who taught music in the Garden Spot School District. Enck saw music as a vehicle for uniting the Ephrata community.
“A lot of what he used to found the band was his own music and his own equipment, some of which is still being used today,” said Kimmel. “When it started, it was more professional musicians coming together. That’s not as possible (now) as it used to be.”
“Community bands have changed over the years,” continued Kimmel. “One hundred years ago, every town had a community band. They’re almost a thing of the past. But I feel like we’ve had a revitalization of the band.”
VBS lessons and activities will be structured around Scripture passages in which water plays a prominent role. Participants will learn Bible stories, do crafts, make snacks, and enjoy games. Evenings will begin and end with worship and songs.
Offerings received during the week will support Lancaster Clean Water Partners, an organization that brings people together to restore and sustain healthy waterways in Lancaster County.
The program is free and open to children age 3 through those who have completed fifth grade. The number of 3-year-olds will be limited, with participants accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance registration is preferred but not required. To register, visit https://lancob.org/ or contact the church office at church@lancob.org.
didn’t know anything about these alloys. I just enjoyed learning about different aspects of materials science. I loved learning from this project.”
“Another rewarding part was going to the international competition,” continued Dwivedi. “It was easily the most fun I’ve ever had in a week. It made me think about problems in a new way, through a different process. When I went to the International Science and Engineering Fair, I got to see cool ways people solve problems. I love to see how people think about solving problems and how they come up with their own individual solutions. I also got better at my soft skills, like talking to people and presenting.”
Dwivedi spent more than 200 hours formulating his
project. A large portion of that time was spent doing research in a laboratory, and another chunk was spent revising and changing written drafts of methods, discussions, results and conclusions.
“It is a quite a bit of time,” said Dwivedi. “It was kind of a back-and-forth project until it got as good as it could be. One of the biggest challenges was finding a safe way to melt the metals. I had to figure out how to do it in my high school chemistry lab. I think I tried seven or eight different melting setups, and I spent nearly a month trying to melt those metals. Eventually, I did figure it out.”
Two years earlier, when he was a sophomore at Warwick, Dwivedi successfully competed in a different cat-

“I definitely think it helped me,” said Dwivedi. “In 10th grade, there were a lot of mistakes I made in my research. I was able to time things better this time. Having had that experience before definitely helped me.”
In June, Dwivedi graduated as Warwick’s Class of 2025’s salutatorian.
“I loved my time at Warwick,” said Dwivedi. “I wouldn’t be the same person if I hadn’t gone to Warwick. It was a lot of hard work because I had a lot of tough classes. It provided me with many opportunities to excel. Warwick is just a family to
me. All the teachers there are so supportive.”
This fall, Dwivedi plans to attend Cornell University, where he will major in chemical engineering.
“I’d love to continue doing research,” said Dwivedi. “I’d love to look into batteries and fuel cells. There are professors there already doing that research, and I’d love to work with them. After college, I might get a master’s or a Ph.D. I love research, and I’d love to lead a research team. That might entail working at a university or somewhere else. Research gives me another opportunity to solve problems.”
