Something’s cooking at Luther Acres

Socialengagement is an important element of good health, especially for older adults. The way Luthercare has got it figured, a great way to engage is through cooking.

Luther Acres, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, recently hosted celebrity chef Norman Van Aken for an interactive, on-site cooking demonstration. With the assistance of eight Luther Acres residents, Van Aken prepared two delicious dishes that were later served as part of that evening’s annual summer picnic.

“Engagement is really critical, honestly,” said Amy Kenn, Luthercare’s communications director.

“ We want folks who live here to be part of our community and develop relationships with other residents and staff. As you age, if you’re not part of a community, residents may spend time alone. Here, we have a lot available for them to do.”

“It’s nice to see smiles and laughter. Cooking and food bring everyone together,” Kenn continued.

Luther Acres’ community room was transformed into a teaching kitchen as Van Aken and his resident assistants concocted roasted and shredded chicken salad with chimichurri mayo and Peppadewblack olive pasta. Later, the unique chicken salad was paired with local favorite Martin’s potato rolls.

After the cooking was through, Van Aken, who created the recipes specially for the event, signed cookbooks and chatted with the 75 or so residents in attendance.

Based in Florida, Van Aken is known as the founding father of New World Cuisine and is famous for introducing fusion into modern cookery. The Smithsonian Magazine once noted that he was ahead of his time in combining local ethnic foods.

“W ho doesn’t love a good meal?” said Kenn. “He walked our residents through how to make these dishes, like you would see on television. It was great hearing questions from our residents. He was really engaging and interesting to listen to. He’s got a lot of flavors with the foods he creates.”

Trolleys introduced Lititz to 20th century

In some very real ways, trolleys were the first mode of local public transportation in Lititz and Warwick Township. But in another, more symbolic way, trolleys represented a bridge, a link, from days gone by to more modern times. Also reflecting the Industrial Revolution, trolleys played an important role in the development of Lititz. Trolleys allowed f or a greater freedom of movement, which gave rise to individual independence, which in turn promoted a certain broadening of intellectual horizons.

Sustaining nature

Katrina Lefever, sustainable landscape coordinator with Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), vividly remembers the first BioBlitz held at MCC in 2022. “Last year, we had it in September, and we held a pawpaw fest as well,” she recalled. “We planted pawpaws in the woods and had some fruit tasting.”

W hile the first blitz, organized by Lefever along with naturalists Lydia Martin, Cameala Freed, and Rita To massetti was held in the fall.

Lefever believed a summer date

would attract a wider age group. The second MCC BioBlitz and Nature Fest will be held on the MCC grounds at 21 S. 12th St., Akron, on Saturday, July 8, from 9 a.m. to noon. Those wishing to join a BioBlitz team, which will count insects and plant life using the iNaturalist app or pen and paper, should register at https:// mcc.org/forms/2023-mcc- bioblitz -nature-fest by Friday, July 7.The Nature Fest is open to the public, and it will include live music, art, and plant giveaways. Children are welcome with adult supervision.

Van Aken’s appearance was part of Morrison Living’s ongoing Celebrity Chef series offered at Luther Acres. Morrison Living is the culinary provider for Luther Acres and, from time to time, presents cooking demonstrations from its own in-house chefs.

“Some of our residents are in independent living, and a lot of them were already interested in cooking,” said Kenn. “Some may even consider themselves ‘foodies.’ We’re just trying to get fun activities for our residents to take part in. This is just one of the things our residents can take advantage of.”

“The idea was to transport people from one part of Lancaster County to another,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation, “or from Lititz to Lancaster or from Lancaster to Lititz. With trolleys, you could go from one town to another.”

Through the Lititz Historical Foundation, Van Brookhoven will offer a Zoom-only, 45-minute presentation on the history of the trolley in Lititz on Wednesday, July 12, beginning at 7 p.m. The program will focus on the trolley’s social and economic impacts on the borough and will feature never-seen-before photos of one of the most romanticized means of local travel.

“People can learn about this unique form of transportation that served Lititz at the turn of the (20th) century,” said Van Brookhoven. “The era of the trolley didn’t last long, but it was an interesting part of our community’s past. Trolleys played an important part in Lititz’s history, as far as transportation goes.”

Trolleys were introduced in Lititz in 1895 and were a mainstay downtown until their demise in 1938. But according to Van Brookhoven, the height of their local popularity may have come at the outset of the 20th century.

The Conestoga Traction Company owned and operated the trolley lines in Lititz and all across Lancaster County. The trolleys transported about 20 passengers at a time.

“It was pretty much all over the county and downtown,” said Van Brookhoven. “Many people were coming to Lititz Springs Park at the time. The trolleys were especially popular in the summer.”

Originally, the trolley line from the city of Lancaster ran to Kissel Hill. Later, a second stop was added

at Lititz Springs Park, partly because the trolley could not contractually cross the railroad tracks at North Broad Street.

With the advent of technology, the world has changed a lot since trolleys ruled the streets of Lititz. But for many, trolleys will always hold a sentimental place in their memories.

“Automobiles became a more reliable means of transportation,” said Van Brookhoven. “Eventually, buses replaced trolleys. There were so many issues with trolleys jumping tracks, getting caught in snow drifts, getting into accidents with cars. In hindsight, there were a lot

of headaches with trolleys.”

To sign up for the Zoom presentation, call 717-627-4636 or email info@lititzhistoricalfoundation.com. Freewill donations to the Lititz Historical Foundation will be accepted.

A Passion For RUNNING

Each BioBlitz team will work with a naturalist to explore the MCC campus. “There’s a stream back in the woods, and there’s a micro meadow in the Welcoming Place, which hosts many butterflies,” said Lefever.

At the Nature Fest, there will be information tables, and visitors will have the opportunity to work at an art table overseen by Tomassetti. There will be a plant and plug giveaway of native plants. Lefever explained that a plug is a very small plant. “There is soil, but it’s mostly root,” she said. A musical group called Nodding Onion will also play. “(Nodding Onion) uses PlantWave technology, which is technology

that attaches electrodes to a plant,” explained Lefever, who noted that every plant creates its own music.

Lefever has been at work to change the landscape at MCC since early 2021.

“We made the move to ecological landscaping, which is trying to live with rather than against nature,” said Lefever, who noted that the effort is based on the work of Doug Tallamy, a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware, who has been studying the relationship between plant life and insects for decades.

“Right now, our insect and bird numbers are plummeting,” said Lefever.

“We have to make changes so we are

not fighting nature but living with nature.” To that end, Lefever has identified and removed invasive plants on the property and replaced them with native plants. “It has made a difference already,” she said.

Now, Lefever would like to share the changes with area residents via the BioBlitz. “We are aware of the amazing bounty here,” she said. “There’s a wonderful number of native plants (on the property). We want to share that with the public and make them aware.”

Readers who would like to learn more may visit https://mcc.org/ get-involved/events/mcc-bioblitz -nature-fest.

Ruhl’s Church will host summer events

“The picnic has good food, good fellowship and good atmosphere,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the community picnic planning committee at Ruhl’s Church. “People can expect to have lots of fun. Our church picnic grove is a special place where people can relax and enjoy each other’s company.”

The church will hold its annual

community picnic on Saturday, July 15, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. It will be held at the Ruhl’s Church Picnic Grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim.

“There will be plenty of food available for purchase throughout the picnic,” said Ruhl. “Early in the morning, we will begin preparing our traditional chicken corn soup, following the recipe that has been used for many generations.” Take-

out soup sales will begin at 9 a.m. A full lunch menu will also be offered, including soup, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs and hot sausage sandwiches with toppings including grilled onions and peppers. “An assortment of delicious homemade desserts and beverages will also be on the menu,” Ruhl stated.

Holding the picnic is a tradition for the church members, and the event helps the church stay connected with the community, Ruhl noted. “Church picnics have been around for a long time and are considered a community social event,” she said. “(It’s) a way for people to gather together, talk and share food. Church picnics are a great place to see old friends and make new friends.”

Ruhl’s Church will offer vacation Bible school (VBS) from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 17, through Friday, July 21, with a theme of “Sky - Everything Is Possible With God.”

“Activities each evening will include praiseworthy music, Bible adventures where children experience God’s word, fun-filled games, awesome crafts and a yummy takehome snack,” said Bev Snavely, who leads the VBS planning committee with her husband, Dennis. “The last evening of VBS, Friday, will be family fun night where parents are encouraged to stay and participate. The evening will end with an ice cream social.” Children may preregister for VBS or sign up on the first night. Additionally, the church will offer services in the grove on Sundays beginning July 9 and running through Aug. 13. Services will begin at 7 p.m.

For more information on upcoming events, to register for VBS or to see a list of speakers for the grove services, visit https://ruhlschurch.org or call 717-665-3400.
