Lititz Rec Schedules 2020 Triathlon By Ann Mead Ash
According to Ababou, attendance at the event has been growing. “Last year we had good participation with both teams and individuals, and we had more than 240 participants,” he said. Although team participation has increased in the last few years, this year more individuals have signed up. “We would like to see more teams (take part),” shared Ababou, who encouraged families to engage children who swim to participate. Ababou noted that a younger family member may complete the swimming portion for a parent. “This is a good chance to (develop) a healthy lifestyle,” he said. “(It’s a chance) for whole families to get moving See Triathlon pg 3

In light of COVID-19 restrictions, organizers of the Lititz recCenter’s annual triathlon event knew they would have to put extra consideration into whether this year’s triathlon would take place as scheduled. The decision was made in a meeting held at the Lititz recCenter on June 5, when the county went to the yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan. “We thought, ‘We will be green by Aug. 9,’” said Simon Ababou, fitness director with the rec center. With that positive thought in mind, the rec center has decided to hold its annual triathlon, which requires participants to swim 300 meters in the Lititz Springs outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland

When Lancaster County restaurant owners learned that outdoor service would be permitted, with restrictions, in the yellow phase of the process to reopen the county, many began thinking outside the box in order to create outdoor seating for their venues. Liz Concra, operations manager at Rooster Street Restaurant and Bar, located at 11 S. Cedar St., Lititz, said that at first the owners Liz Concra, operations manager at Rooster Street Restaurant and Bar located in and employees were at a loss as to what to do. “We (had been offer- Lititz, stands on the stage that is part of ing) takeout all along on Thurs- the restaurant’s new outdoor dining area. days, Fridays, and Saturdays,” said The area opened in mid-June Concra. “We never closed.” with counter service for customers. surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles, on Sunday, Aug. 9, starting at 8 a.m. As in the past, the event will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. Organizers of the triathlon encourage participants to sign up in teams, so that families and friends can enjoy the event together. The minimum age to take part in the event is 14. Teams made up of employees from local businesses or fellow church members are encouraged to participate. Ababou noted that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event. The rec center has written to Lancaster County swim teams to apprise them of this opportunity. Ababou noted that the outdoor pool, located adjacent to the rec center, is currently being renovated, but it is slated to be ready for the triathlon.
